The CW wants to stage a comeback, of sorts, for the classic UK children’s series The Tomorrow People. Greg Berlanti and Julie Plec will executive produce a drama pilot that’s based on the British series that aired in the ’70s.
It’s the story of several young people from around the world who represent the next stage in human evolution, possessing special powers, including the ability to teleport and communicate with each other telepathically. Together they work to defeat the forces of evil. The writer is Phil Klemmer.
The CW also ordered the drama pilot Blink from writer Vera Herbert and executive producer David Marshall Grant.
It’s described as warm, quirky, humorous drama about a family whose lives are forever changed, for better and worse, when the patriarch has a car accident resulting in a coma like syndrome where he cannot speak or move, but can see and hear all. His narration and fantasy sequences emanating from his mind provide context and a wry counterpoint to the stories and conflicts of the family and his own situation.

I loved the original Tomorrow People. It was very BBC with cheesy affects, but the stories were reasonably tight and the characters were enjoyable. I'll be interested to see where they go with this.
ReplyDeleteNope, but nice try CW. Mark is trying but he needs to move away from the 1 hour drama format sooner rather than later. The CW doing a UK remake and to have Julie Plec involved that's a disaster waiting to happen. I have feeling Julie and Greg's vision not mesh well together. Just saying.
ReplyDeleteI was expecting Amazon too. Deadline says CW ordered 8 pilots and there is no Amazon.
ReplyDeleteAmazon has been pushed to next year's development schedule.
ReplyDelete"I have feeling Julie and Greg's vision not mesh well together. Just saying"
ReplyDeleteThey've been collectively chasing the rights to this project for over a decade (according to Deadline) so they've had plenty of time to plan, revise, etc.
the tomorrow people sounds an awful lot like heroes
ReplyDeleteI am intrested in the Tomrrow people, I been looking for a show like Heroes since it got cancelled... and since Alphas got canceleld.
ReplyDeleteYou do know that the original British series was in the 70's, right? Therefore Heroes would have been the one that sounds like The Tomorrow People
ReplyDeleteBlink will never happen, there's no way The CW will take such a risk
ReplyDeleteAnd here I was thinking Blink was too mundane for The CW. It's the projects like Blink (and previous efforts like Life Unexpected, Emily Owens, and Hellcats) that aren't filled with sex, violence, over-the-top soapy romance, or all of the above are the ones that get left in the dust or arrive DOA on The CW. The network's track record indicates it's a small miracle that Hart of Dixie is still on the air.
ReplyDeletethe tomorrow people sounds cool but i am not a fan of julie plec. also, how many shows can she work at? tvd, the originals and the tomorrow people sounds a bit too much imo. even shonda got unfocused on pp last season with the three shows at the same time.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it really matters that it is a remake of a 70's show, people are going to equate it with the most recent incarnations--we just had Heroes and Alphas. How many of these do we need before they seem repetitive?
ReplyDeleteYa it sounds like heroes but it also sounds like x-men which is a lot older (the comic books are at least)
ReplyDeleteBlink sounds a lot like Six Feet Under if the dad survived the car accident.
ReplyDeleteBoth sound fairly interesting to me.
i hope julie plec leaves vampire diaries beacuse of this. she is awful
ReplyDeleteI have hopes for Tomorrow People. Could be interesting but it sounds like it would need the budget to back it. Blink seems like a long shot to be picked up.
ReplyDeleteI expected them to try 2 comedies this season, since Pedowitz said he wanted them when he was first hired. I guess they think it's easier to market one instead of two shows for the hour. Will give him kudos though. He's stepping into genre with both feet.
ReplyDeleteProbably good to give Wonder Woman one more year before pursuing it given the disaster NBC had with it.
ReplyDeleteAll the shows you mentioned unfortunately lasted one or two seasons... I might be wrong about Blink, I hope I am, but I don't think The CW will go down this path again...
ReplyDeletePlus, Blink is not based on anything already well known...
Julie Plec is involved with The Tomorrow People, eh? I bet the female "superheroes" on that show will mostly whine, be victimized and need to be saved, and try to choose between boyfriends. Anyway, sounds like a show that could pair well with Supernatural or Arrow.
ReplyDeleteLol at the plec comment, I completely agree.
ReplyDeleteHowever taking into consideration HoD is on the network and is doing decent, they might be inclined to find a good companion for it. I think a show like this might go through just for the sake of that.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Greg Berlanti is invovled with Tomorrow People. Less happy that Julie Plec is also in the the mix for that show...
ReplyDeleteSix out of The CW's eight pilots are genre shows (one of which is a period drama). The two that aren't are this show (Blink) and Company Town, which is a standard drama as opposed to a light drama like this pilot and HoD. That doesn't seem like a lot of effort on the part of The CW to buoy their only dramedy.
ReplyDeleteStill Company Town and Blink are closer to HoD than any of the others, which does make me think that one of those two will probably go through.
ReplyDeleteEither that or TCD and 90210 will get half season pick ups to share the HoD companion spot.
"Either that or TCD and 90210 will get shortened season pick ups and share the HoD companion spot."
ReplyDeleteThat seems like a likely scenario. I don't see both of those shows getting full seasons. In fact, I'd say it's more likely that only one of them will survive at all.
Here's my Predictions for next fall's schedule for the CW
