Borealis takes place in the near future, 2045, in the not so near Arctic, in the International Arctic Free Zone. The central character is Vic Carboneau, played by Ty Olsson. Vic owns the tavern/hotel/brothel and is the Customs Officer. Meanwhile, a number of different international interests are vying for control of the area and the valuable mining and oil rights. Patrick Gallagher plays Taq, Vic’s best friend and right hand man. Terry Chen plays Roger, the town’s de facto coroner/doctor. Alison Freemont is an internationally known biologist/conservationist/blogger, played by Michelle Harrison. She’s trying to keep the indigenous wildlife from being driven to extinction. Greyston Holt plays Dan an American postdoctoral student who ends up helping both Vic and Alison. Cristina Rosato plays Bettina, one of the girls who works out of Vic’s place. Clive, played by Bryan Dick, is one of her customers and a recovering addict who also does some work for Vic. While Vic does his best to keep things running smoothly in Borealis, the “law” comes in the form of the Canadian military led by Raminder, played by Karan Oberoi. When things start to heat up in Borealis and an international shake up of control looms, the UN sends in Svetlana, played by Christine Horne, to keep things on an even keel.![]() |

The acting in Borealis is simply fantastic. I was already familiar with Ty Olsson from Supernatural and Patrick Gallagher from Davinci’s Inquest and Glee, so I expected top flight performances from them and that’s what they delivered. The two have great chemistry in every scene. Bryan Dick and Terry Chen both deliver both strong comedic beats and dramatic sequences. Dick was actually in one of my favorite episodes of Torchwood. Michelle Harrison delivers a wonderful performance as a strong, smart scientist. Likewise, Rosata’s Bettina avoids becoming a simple stereotype. The women are neither harsh nor victims.
The writing is also exceptional. Andrew Rai Berzins and Andrew Wreggitt are the writers and creators, and they’ve created a very rich landscape. There is a lot of room to develop the different threads started in the pilot into a series. The characters are also multi-faceted and well-rounded. Perhaps most interesting, is the potential in this not too distant future to examine real, fundamental issues about the environment and politics which are current. I’ve come to expect that element in much of Canadian television, just as I’ve come to expect great dialogue. One of the things that might be a bit problematic for a more general North American audience – other than a cable pick up – would be the frequent, and very realistic, use of the f-bomb.
The pilot was directed by David Frazee. He makes good use of long, moving shots, especially in the opening sequence. The fight scenes are in long shots as well – the way they should be shot when they are this well choreographed. For a science fiction story set in the near future, Borealis really makes very circumspect use of special effects. They are used very judiciously – the dirigibles flying overhead being the most obvious – and are done exceptionally well. The production was shot outside of Calgary and the setting was perfect. Vic’s bar, the military base, and Svetlana’s base were all given distinctive looks, yet still felt very much of the same period.
There is lots of intrigue in Borealis, a mystery to be solved, in addition to the various character dynamics. There are also great action sequences and an amazing cage fight match at the end. If you missed seeing it tonight, it airs again on Saturday, January 12 on Space in Canada at 3pm PST. If you were lucky enough to see Borealis, and you want more (as I do!), you should let the Space channel know - @SPACEchannel - and Bell Media - @BellMediaPR.
Did you get to see Borealis? Do you want to? Sound off in the comments...

Thanks Lisa, I'll definitely be checking this out now.
ReplyDeleteBeing in the US I didn't get to see Borealis, but I would really like to. I'm hoping SyFy will pick up the movie or that the DVD becomes available.
ReplyDeleteI should so watch this :)) (It also has Benny from SPN!)
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I liked the show a lot too, and agree that it has enormous potential as a series--well-etched characters, lots of groundwork laid for future plot lines, a concept that wold work well for self-contained episodes as well as for a larger myth-arc. The acting was indeed quite strong--often a problem in genre stuff.
ReplyDeleteSFX were used as they should be: as an unobtrusive way of establishing context and environment, rather than as a substitution for plot and character. I loved the fact that audiences were left ot infer things about this world from things like the dirigibles (petroleum depletion leading to a revival of this mode of transport) or the news screens and ads we would occasionally glimpse in the background. The creators seem to hav etohught through things pretty well.
And, only in Canada could you get a story in which ancient nails stolen from an archeological dig were the key plot point! Loved it!
If this were a series, I'd definitely watch it!
Yes! It's a great movie! The only downside is that you are going to want more by the end of it... And FYI, Ty is the star of this! And he's said he'd be more than willing to do both Benny and Vic!!
ReplyDeleteIt's possible it may become available over the Internet... But certainly, much better if SyFy would pick it up! It would be a great addition to their line up and exactly the type of show they broadcast.
ReplyDeleteThought it was GREAT CANADIAN TV !!! Promoting it to ALL my Sci-Fi friends, and PROUD to do so. (prediction): May well be as significant as our award winning "FLASHPOINT"!
ReplyDeleteIt was a really good movie that shows a lot of promise!
ReplyDeleteJust watched Borealis and I really liked it. The plot is gripping and the characters interesting. There's enough mystery to make me want to know more. Here's hoping it gets picked up to series. This one is worth the extra searching it will take to get to see it.
ReplyDeleteI highly recommend it too. It has a great premise and the action runs evenly throughout. I watched it mostly because Ty (Benny from SPN) stars in it but now I would seek it out for the show itself.
ReplyDeletewatched and liked it, hope for more episodes
ReplyDeleteit is online now eztv :)
ReplyDeleteit is online now eztv :D
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up!
ReplyDeleteI was lucky enough to get to see it and it's just as fantastic as you say it is, for all of those reasons! It totally needs to be picked up and made into the television show it deserves to be, rather than languish as a 2 hour movie that doesn't even have an actual conclusion. There's still so much left to tell, left to resolve. I hope they realize the mistake in passing up this show and decide to pick it up for more episodes, after all. It would be a shame if they didn't.
ReplyDeleteGreat! Whes does the series start..? Can't wait.
ReplyDeleteIncredible potential for a series. I was able to watch this in the UK thanks to EZTV although not legal at least I had a way to view this potential series. The acting was strong ( as expected) and the story was tight, setting up many future story-lines. Fingers crossed this gets picked up by a network. If not then at least we had a glimpse of the potential of all invloved in the project.
ReplyDeleteIs this just one episode?
ReplyDeleteI liked it a lot, hope they make more episodes
ReplyDeleteI just watched this and I can only say WOW what a great series this will be! The action. Intrigue, and deception plus destroyed wildlife!
ReplyDeleteNo the nails were stolen from a Museum in Norway and brought to this supposed Archaeological dig in the Arctic. The Russians were trying to cheat their way to support their claim. Too bad this one Bad A$$ Canadian Fighter stood in their way!
ReplyDeleteWatched it twice! Love Ty Olsson as Vic and I would definitely watch this if it became a series *hint hint nudge nudge*
ReplyDeleteAw... missed the live airing and the encore.... *must hunt down on the net*
ReplyDeleteIf you follow Ty on Twitter he has been good at helping people in that situation.
ReplyDeleteI actually don't use twitter... I'll figure something out.... ;D
ReplyDeleteSo far. Originally, it was a pilot for a series and they had ordered more scripts. There is a movement to try to get it back on track for a series though - contacting Space and Bell Media to tell them you liked it is a good start!
ReplyDeleteSo far there is no series planned. A lot of people are contacting Space channel and Bell Media to ask for a series though! This was originally a pilot for a series that they decided not to go forward with. I can't even imagine why they put this one on the shelf! If you want more, contact the above....
ReplyDeleteJust finished watching the pilot. This is great viewing.
ReplyDeletePlease we want more Borealis!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story!! I surely hope the "powers that be" Turn this into a weekly series. It's nice to see something that is new and creative and NOT another piece of crap reality show.
ReplyDeleteSully
what's his twitter handle? I must watch this asap!
ReplyDelete@TyOlsson
ReplyDeleteDahne, was it a movie or an episode? I looked for it online and found S1 ep1.is that what you watched?
ReplyDeleteLoved. This. Show! #KeepBorealisAlive
ReplyDeleteFrom what I understand 6 episodes were written but only 2 were filmed. The movie is those first two episodes. Things are a little fuzzy but one of the actors tweeted me that this is indeed the only footage shot.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info, now i know what to look for! Hope it gets picked up if its that's good.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about you but the last few seasons I have had a hard time caring about new shows. There are some I like and watch every week. Some I watch even though they are mediocre at best. Still I haven't found that next great show yet, the one that will grip my attention and keep me thinking about it for days later or have characters that engage me beyond just 42 minutes. There are few that grab me from the pilot and even fewer that keep me interested through a hiatus or have me rewatching episodes over and over again.
ReplyDeleteBorealis at least got me interested from the pilot. No way of telling whether that would have continued or not, but the plot was right up my alley and I wanted to know more about the characters. Well except the environmentalist. She annoyed me. I don't even care that the whole plot rests on 6 nails, which sounds a lot more boring than it was. I found it intelligent and action-filled with great pacing. More importantly, I have watched this one 2.5 times now. That's saying something for me. I hope you watch it. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.
Thanks! =D
ReplyDeleteTy Olsson is excellent!
ReplyDeleteThis was a unique and very well acted show. It would be a real shame if it ended here; the show seems like a goldmine of character and plot development, intrigue and action.

ReplyDeleteYes, and they they were stolen, again, from the archeological dig.... ;-)
ReplyDeleteLove Ty! Great actor - Please keep the show going
ReplyDeleteBecause of this board I went looking for this pilot and found it. I watched about 3 mins and decided my best friend should watch it with me because, that quickly, I was impressed. We both declared it awesome. The performances were awesome, the setting was awesome, the world building was awesome. I'm in the US so I'm not sure if our voice matters when it comes to picking it up as a series...but I got two YES! votes to log.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! Of course your voice matters! In fact, it may matter even more... If Canadian television doesn't want to pick it up, there's nothing to stop an American network from doing so. In fact, Netflix is starting original programming and could be a great venue for the series. Certainly, a US network like SyFy would be a wonderful partner to get on board too... There are lots of petitions out there to sign to try to push for a series - if you follow Ty or Patrick on Twitter, they will be happy to point you in the right direction!
ReplyDeletewhy does everything get solves by cage fight?
ReplyDeleteafter a little bit of googling I found a steaming service to watch it over the internet from The Netherlands, I totally fell in love with the pilot and hope to see more...
ReplyDeleteBorealis is not simply great television. It is exceptional viewing. It needs to be given life !
