Now, when I first heard about this Pilot, I was very very skeptical, having been a big fan of the original movies with Anthony Perkins. I'm not normally a fan of remakes/reboots etc but still with a strong cast I was happy to give it a try.
And boy am I glad I did.
The pilot gets off to a slow start where we see a young Norman (played brilliantly by Freddie Highmore) finding his fathers body in the garage after an apparant "accident". It's unclear at this stage how he died but I got the feeling that Normans mother, Norma (played by the superb Vera Farmiga) might have had something to with it. It should be noted, to those unaware, that this is set in modern times.
This event is the catayst whereby Norma and Norman pack up and move away. Norma buys a motel (which will become the famous Bates Motel) and they settle in and start doing it up. Meanwhile Norman starts school and is introduced to the world of Girls/Parties and drugs. It's obvious that Norman has lived a very sheltered life and there are some early ominous signs of how controlling Norma is over Norman.
However it's not until about 25 minutes in that the story really picks up.
Norman decides to rebel one night and this event is the start of everything. There is a shocking and quite graphic scene that will bind Norman and his mother for life. I'm not going to spoil it for you here but it's a very powerful few mintues.
We're also introduced to Zach Shelby, played by Nestor Carbonell, the local sheriff. He again only has a short role in the pilot but I think his character will be well received.
We also get to briefly meet Emma (Olivia Cooke), a schoolgirl with a chronic disease (I can't recall the name of it sorry), who meets Norman and we get the impression that they will become friends.
The mother/son relationship has a slightly creepy undercurrent during the show and we start to see how potentially this young, naive, likeable and innocent Norman Bates will somehow turn in the Norman Bates that we saw in the movies.
The pilot did it's job well, setting up the story and introducing us to the characters.
Overall I loved the pilot and could not wait to see more. The acting is really first class and the production quality is extremely high, matching that of most movies.
This will not be for everyone, but those who like a good story/writing, good acting and production values should enjoy this. It will be interesting to see how this is received critically and how the ratings hold up.
If you have any questions about the Pilot I will try to answer them in the comments below without revealing any major spoilers (although there are not many major spoilers to be told)
Here are some photos from the Pilot.

ReplyDeletethanks for the review, sounds like it is worth a look so I am going to check this out when it's on.
ReplyDeletehave you ever seen the movie Psycho?
ReplyDeleteoh yes! as I mention I'm a big fan of the movie originals.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed it! I myself was also skeptical, especially of the modern times factor and being a Hitchcock fan in general. Carlton Cuse and this cast is what kept me interested, but your review gives great hope! Thanks a bunch, Sharon!
ReplyDeleteYes, I was like you as well. CC was one of the few reasons I was going to check it out but when I saw the casting as well I thought I'd give it a go.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed it a lot more than I expected I would. It still has that creepy vibe to it
Do you think I will be able to enjoy it without knowing the movie(s)? Gonna give it a spin later
ReplyDeleteIt's good to know that you've enjoyed it, I have nice hope for this show. After the Pilot do you get the feeling that the rest of the season will be highly serialized or you think that there might be room for a procedural thing where every episodes has its own "case"?
ReplyDeleteI didn't get the impression that it would have much of a procedural element from the pilot. It feels highly serialized.
ReplyDeletethat's a very good question. I had not thought about it as a standalone show. I think so yes. It's basically the story of Norman Bates from the beginning so it should hold up well as a newcomer to the "psycho" world
ReplyDeleteCool, I'll let you know what I thought later.
ReplyDeleteyes please. do you have access as well?
ReplyDeleteExcellent, what I was hoping for, thanks.
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteyep :)
ReplyDeleteI'm intrigued by the series... more so after your review. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI 'm glad there is no procedural element. That would have ruined a series like this I think. You just do not get deep enough into the character's minds in a procedural and this really appears to be all about the young Norman Bates and what shaped him from what I glean.
Yes that is why I liked it so much. I could not even start to think how they would make this a "procedural".
ReplyDeleteI suppose each episode will have standalone story arcs but this is no "monster/crime of the week" show. Or I certtainly did not get that impression from the pilot.
Lucky girl! I want to see it too :D
ReplyDeleteOnly a couple more months hehe
ReplyDeleteJust finished watching it and enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Will definitely tune in for more when the series starts.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad they kept the teenie stuff to a minimum, hopefully it will stay this way. I didn't like those girls very much, except for the one with the chronic disease.
I especially enjoyed the acting of Norma, very good job.
And the last scene was very intriguing.
So glad you enjoyed bert.
ReplyDeleteWho were the people in the last scene. I could not make it out on my screen
They didn't show it. I wonder if they cut it out because of spoilers cause the episode cut out a bit weird?
ReplyDeleteI am just wondering, where do you see these advanced screenings?
ReplyDeletethanks. I thought it was just me. I think your right about the deliberate quick cut ending
ReplyDeleteI was invited by A&E to view an advance copy with my press pass
ReplyDeleteI see.
ReplyDeleteI had no desire to see this, but after your preview i am going to give it a chance. You made it sound good, thanks Sharon!!!
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy it laura
ReplyDeleteMax Theiriot didn't show up in the first episode?
ReplyDeleteI was wondering, how would I go about obtaining screeners? I want to be a reviewer.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your review, you actually made me more excited for the show
sounds good I'm definitely aboard.
ReplyDeleteNetworks send screeners out for some of their shows that they want to promote, to TV Media outlets such as SpoilerTV, TV Guide, E!Online etc. Normally these are pilots/premieres and finales.
ReplyDeleteI don't recall him. Who does he play?
ReplyDeleteI´m so glad to hear you liked it. There has been so many bad pilots this year. I´m happy to hear that Bates Hotel is gonna be amongst the good ones. Very excited to see this, I love Vera Farmiga.
ReplyDeleteSo I have to work for one of those outlets?
ReplyDeleteYes, as far as I know the only way is to work for a media site that has press credentials with the networks.
ReplyDeleteSweet thanks. . . And if you ever need an extra pair of hands for site, let me know lol
ReplyDeleteThanks, we normally put a call out for additional reviewers every 6 months so keep an eye out :)
ReplyDeleteI was actually looking into this show, but after I found out about Low Winter Sun, Intelligence and Hannibal being picked up I just thought that Bates Motel would just be too much. I think I'll give it another chance though.
ReplyDeleteIt's like The Following and Hannibal - nothing the world needs (these days). Since when became blood, murder and brutality enteratining?

ReplyDeleteJust watched the first episode of Bates Motel and I have to say I am not impressed. A sort of sequel of how Norman and his mother movie to a sleep little town and open up The Bates Motel. But a big problem is they updated it to 2013 which I think is a big mistake. Also there is no real suspense in the show, I think the makers need to take a film course on Hitchcock. This has more in common with the Twilight series than anything Hitchcock ever did.
