13 Dec 2012

It's a Supernatural hiatus and you know what that means....polls and special articles to help everyone through this time of no new SPN. So pull away from the half clad Victoria's Secret models that are currently taking the Winchesters' spot and cast your vote. The first contest of the winter hiatus is Favorite Song. Below is a list of the top 32 songs with corresponding YouTube videos as nominated by SpoilerTV folks over the summer and a bracket you can print up if you want to predict the winners at home. So sit back, listen to some classic rock and pick your favs. Voting lasts until 8:00 pm St. Louis time (CST).

PS - I added the nomination form for other polls. If you have a poll you would like to see in the future, please nominate it. I will not do any contest that promotes brother wars or shipping, but other than that.....

  1. Welcome to the midseason Supernatural hiatus. Our plans include the best song and best song-to-scene contests. We'll also finish the Best Title contest and do the first 150 episodes ranking articles. If you have other ideas, please put them in the comments on nominate them on the form. We're always looking for ways to make hiatus more enjoyable.

  2. I can see song-to-scene causing a whole butt-load of arguing. Hard enough to get people to agree on the color of the sky....

    ReplyDelete
  3. The nominations already caused a bunch of um...interesting conversation since many people were confusing best song-to-scene with favorite song. The biggest item of contention was Eye of the Tiger since the part people liked was an outtake and not part of the plot of the episode. Still I chose these polls because they are not likely to spur on brother wars when the fandom is already on edge.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I'm sitting here laughing my butt off at your last sentence. For some reason a political cartoon with two groups tiptoeing the edge of a cliff just popped into my head.

    ReplyDelete
  5. In all honesty, I would rather have the first 4 than 3 of the last 4 so it's harder for me than it will probably be for most. In the end I chose:

    1. Carry on Wayward Son - my favorite Kansas song BEFORE Supernatural ever aired. Now it's even better by association.

    2. Highway to Hell - again I liked it in the 80's. In-a-Gadda-da-Vida is now completely tied to Skin to me and that's the reason I like it so much.

    3. I don't care for either of these songs, mostly because of the vocals.

    4. Rock of Ages - Def Leppard was my favorite band for a time so it gets the heavy nostalgia factor. However I also like One Way or Another...when I can get past the creepy stalker lyrics. It's now funny to me thanks to My Heart Will Go On. It will get very high marks from me in the song-to-scene contest.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Add Jeremy Carver's head (Wizard of Oz style) pushing both groups over and you've got a pictorial summary of the fandom right now in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I'll be tied to Kansas like the buttons on my shirt for the rest of my life but Carry On is about 5th on my list.

Rooster was PERFECT at the end of Folsom Prison Blues. Yet the poignancy of Knockin' on Heaven's Door always gets me.

One of my majors was Radio and Television Production. Music is a HUGE part of my life. I've used it as inspiration, and motivation throughout my life and friends and teammates lives, too. Now I just gotta find the right combo to fight back from all these back surgeries.

From your past work, I know you'll do a fantastic job with this.

I may even have to start a few arguments with this one! :) (First time I ever used that symbol)

    ReplyDelete
  8. Poll time! love it. The music on this show is (or was in the earlier seasons) like another character. I miss not getting a new classic rock song (or a repeat of an already heard song) once every episode, or every other episode. But I digress.
    My votes:
    1. Carry On Wayward Son. As if Cherry Pie (which I like, but c'mon!) had a chance in hell against the SPN Anthem, which is also a kickin' song.
    2. In-a-Gadda-da-Vida. I like Highway to Hell well enough, but I feel like the groove and mood of In-a-Gadda is perfect for the show. Plus, Highway to Hell is far too overplayed lately, in too many things.
    3. Knockin' on Heaven's Door. One of my favorite scenes in SPN (Dean and kid-Sam shooting fireworks in Heaven) is accompanied by this song, so it gets bonus points for that. Plus, I just think it's a beautiful song.
    4. Rock Of Ages. Def Leppard will always win over Blondie. I actually hate One Way Or Another being a part of SPN. It's not a song I ever choose to listen too.

Fun! Glad to have some polls back! :D

    ReplyDelete
  9. Carry On Wayward Son is the theme song, so of. course that one. I expect it every season. I guess I'm an oddball but In-a-gadda-da- vida is just classic rock for me. Knockin' on Heaven's Door is the next one. I can't listen to Rock of Ages without thinking of Dean placing the tape in the Impala and slowly driving in to face Lucifer and Michael in his brothers' bodies.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Wheee! I get so excited for these haha... it's good to keep Supernatural in the front of my mind. Plus, I look forward to the occasional upset.

My choices were pretty much on par with what's expected to win here, with one exception.
    1) Carry On Wayward Son. As far as anthems on SPN go, it doesn't get much better than this.

    2) In-a-Gadda-da-Vida. Perhaps not the most obvious choice, but I think that it was a brilliant choice for the episode. It really fit the mood. I realize this may be more suited for a song-to-scene argument, but it's hard to separate that on this one for me. And I think Iron Butterfly is woefully underrated.

    3) Knockin' on Heaven's Door. Whether it's Bob Dylan or Guns 'n Roses, this is a favorite of mine.

    4) Rock of Ages. Huge Def Leppard fan here. And hair bands tend to win where I'm concerned haha

    ReplyDelete
  11. Carry On My Wayward Son, a song which I loved way before I'd ever heard of Supernatural but which was a perfect theme song for the show, and will now always remind me of it.
    X
The next one is a difficult choice because the title 'Highway to Hell' and the song itself is very evocative of the show but I love the haunting feel of 'In-a Gadda-da-Vida,' which I believe is meant to be 'In the Garden of Eden', therefore eminently suitable too. I go with it.
    X
Again I loved 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door' well before SPN and now I associate it with two of my favourite scenes; the end scene in 'Houses of the Holy'; I just love that exchange between the brothers, and of couse the so touching fireworks scene in DSOTM.
    X
Not really a great fan of either of these two songs but I'll give it to 'Rock of Ages' as I don't care much for Blondie's music.

  12. I know what Supernatural hiatus means. It means Dahne tortures me by forcing me to make difficult choices. :-)

Carry On Wayward Son, In-a-Gadda-da-Vida, Knockin' on Heaven's Door, and Rock of Ages

blanking on poll suggestions...I can't remember what we've already done. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  13. Thought for a while I was going to be the only one to vote for Rooster.

    ReplyDelete
  14. ..I am not good on supernatural song because i dont know the tittle only the music in this poll i just guessing in most cases

    ReplyDelete
  15. Cherry Pie - Only because it could use some love.Carry On My Wayward Son is one of my favorite songs,it doesn't need much help here,it's probably gonna win this whole thing(I wish it does),so i'm voting for the underdog.

Highway to Hell - I really like both songs but Highway to Hell has a slight edge over 'In-a Gadda-da-Vida,

    ReplyDelete
  16. I picked the top song in each poll, I always have to stop and think about One Way or the Other, but the ONLY thing I think about when I hear it is Veronica Mars and I did the same thing when it came on SPN. These were easy, going to get bad later. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm pretty sure that I can already say Carry On My Wayward Son is my winner;)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Nelly, if you click on the song title in the list above, it will bring up a YouTube video with the song and lyrics.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm pretty sure That I can say Carry On Wayward Son is the overall winner too. It would take a miracle or an influx of Styx or AC/DC fans to beat it.

Carry on my wayward son ..Highway to Hell and defo Roster by a mile i hate knocking on heaven 's door

    ReplyDelete
  21. lol Yes, like it's not enough we have weeks until a new episode, Dahne has to make us vote. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  22. I liked the part in the episode too. Dean is throwing his fists up and gets startled when Sam walks up to the car. lol

I also liked the part afterwards when Dean sniffs the food Sam brought then throws the box in the car, not eating it. Sam actually stumbled on his words, I think he was shocked Dean didn't eat it! XD

    ReplyDelete
  23. Carry On Wayward Son, In a-Gadda-da-Vida, Knockin On Heaven's Door, and One Way Or Another.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Spirit in the Sky's not on the list! Hopefully it makes the scene list. Always loved the parallel between Good God Y'All and The Twilight Zone's "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street".

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thankfully. Another Rooster fan.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Watch it! I've been called an influx before.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yes. You Tube could be the greatest thing since they put beer in a can.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Great poll! Really needed to remember something I like about SPN! Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  29. oh, that is awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Aw, the link for Carry on my Wayward Son is bad.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I used to own Eye of the Tiger on a 45 (that would be vinyl my young friends)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Carry on Wayward Son, In-a-Gadda-da-Vida, Rooster & One Way or Another

    ReplyDelete
  33. Just adding a big THANK YOU to dahne for putting the links to the songs, have had a lot of fun today, listening and remembering some very fine scenes..Dean and Anna, back seat of Baby, getting some Angel food cake. Dean and young Sam with fireworks, Dean going to meet Lucifer/Sam & Michael/Adam. Since I don't want to make a book will stop. lol Fun poll and fantastic series.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yeah Rooster was perfect for the scene it played in. I always watch that scene at least a few times over whenever I re-watch the episode.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Are we voting for our favorite song regardless of the show, or favorite song regarding how it was used in the show? This is an important distinction for me, as it decides whether each song gets a fair chance from me, or whether I'm just giving the victory to Renegade outright. :P

    ReplyDelete
  36. The music was one of the first things I loved about Supernatural. It was music I already had a connection to and brought back fun high school memories. Oh how I missed it when the budget got cut. I don't expect this contest to cause a lot of fights but in the next one all bets are off. I'm actually thinking of expanding the next one because there have been new songs introduced since we nominated.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I miss the classic rock too. It's always a pleasure when we get something. I agree about Carry on Wayward Son and Cherry Pie. If Kansas doesn't win this, it will be the single most shocking thing that has happened where Supernatural is concerned and on this show that's saying something.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hearing Carry on Wayward Son sets the mood for every finale since season 2. Hearing it combined with the knowledge that we are in a finale gets my blood pumping and my anticipation rising faster than anything else. That song is basically short hand for a mind blowing experience awaiting.

    ReplyDelete
  39. This one is just favorite song even if you have not seen the episode at all. The song-to-scene contest that we are doing next is the one where the winner should be the one that best matched the scene it was used in. In other words, song-to-scene is the one where Renegade is hands down the best choice. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  40. You are very welcome. I thought that it would help if people are not as familiar with classic rock. Plus it was a great walk down memory lane for me too. Love how every time I hear these songs I automatically think SPN.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm a big fan of hair bands too. Teen of the late 80's and all. I think I'm going to expand the song-to-scene contest. Right now it is only 16 songs. If we expand to 32, it's likely In-a-Gadda-da-Vida will be in it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. In-a-Gadda-da-Vidi, Shambala, and Spirit in the Sky are the songs that benefited most from a SPN association for me.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hey now, this one is a lot easier than most of them. :-P

I am not sure on all the polls other people have done (like the character description polls Chris is running right now) but here's the polls that I have run for SpoilerTV. I do the majority so I think it's a fairly comprehensive list.

    Favorite Weapon
    Best Visceral Death
    Best Emotional Death
    Best Gory Death
Best One-Shot PiP (Person in Peril) - by season and overall
Best One-Shot Antagonist/Monster - by season and overall
    Favorite Episode - by season
    Favorite Angel (excluding Castiel)
    Favorite Demon
Favorite Human (excluding Dean, Sam, and Bobby)
    Favorite Object
Favorite Other Character (not human, demon, or angel)
Favorite Recurring Character (not Dean, Sam, Bobby, or Castiel)

Favorite Scene - Like a Virgin, Unforgiven, Mannequin 3 The Reckoning, The French Mistake, Weekend at Bobby's

Who do you think will die in ______ episode?
    Best Comedy episode
    Best Sera Gamble episode
    Best Season 7 episode
    Best Eric Kripke episode
    Best Ben Edlund episode

    ReplyDelete
  44. There is nothing to complain about in this poll. Wait until I make you rank the first 150 Supernatural episodes in January. It's not enough to know your top 10. You have to rank them with no ties and no waffling. Why yes, I have been taking torture lessons from Crowley and no hell line is harder than deciding how to rank my 15 favorite episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I figured every song would get at least a couple votes. After all, Bugs got some pity votes in our Ultimate SPN Episode contest.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I knew someone would throw Cherry Pie some love. We an't let any good song go completely defeated.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The first round is always easiest because the songs with the most nominations go against those with the least nominations usually. You are right that it will get harder but not near as hard as those episode polls last summer.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I am pretty sure I am going to expand the song-to-scene contest. Originally I used 16 because that was the more natural cutoff but I think it could be a fun contest to make longer. Look for additional run-off polls to determine what makes it in. I might open the nominations back up for a little bit too.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Ha! The music was one thing besides the Impala that tended to unite the fandom. That's why I chose these polls since hiatus can be a little rough with all the fan wars.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Ha! So did I. Actually I had many of these songs either on vinyl or cassette. My mom actually bought me Bang Your Head when I was a kid, officially making her the cool mom among my friends.

    ReplyDelete
  51. O Death is to me the only real threat to Renegade in the song-to-scene contest. If anything besides those two win, it will be a shame.

    ReplyDelete
  52. For me any song could be playing in that scene as long as it had a good beat. That keeps it from being song-to-scene material for me.

    ReplyDelete
  53. It KILLS me Blondie is losing to Def mofreakin' Leppard, of all lame hair bands. UGH UGH UGH.

    ReplyDelete
  54. It's just sad, because I hate that song SO much. :/ I always cringe whenever SPN would fire it up in premieres and finales.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Oh heck, I was not here for a lot of these, maybe redo some of the older ones, not sure when I signed up, but it has been a little over a year....I think???

    ReplyDelete
  56. I know, I was joking around. :P

I've got them set up for you. Surprised? I set it up and finished it not long after you made the 1st announcement. It's not perfect, but I think I have set up the 150 episodes right. It's hard cause it changes a lot for me, so some episodes I might not agree with by the time I post. Survival Of The Fittest I think is too high on my list for one, but I don't know where else to put it.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'm just joking around too. Sorry. Tone doesn't always transfer well online.

Woo hoo to you! I am seriously impressed. You are doing better than I am. I haven't even started on my middle yet and I have a feeling that is going to give me the most trouble. So glad you are going to participate. It will be a lot more fun the more people's opinions we have. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  58. so true. I was going to say something to that effect (about Carry On being the assumed winner in the end) but then maybe something else will come out on top (though I sincerely doubt it)? I also tried to keep the song separate from the show in my votes, as much as I could - since this poll is about the music. :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. What happens to me when I can not do the middle?? Maybe I should say when I DON'T do the middle, there is just no way, to many of them are the same for me. Top 40 or 50 I can do and the bottom 20...maybe. lol

    ReplyDelete
  60. I have a great appreciation for people adept at torture. Your lessons were worth whatever you paid. :-)

At least you can *settle* on 15 favorite episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Love the image you guys.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Did you use the little plastic thingy to pop in the middle so it would stay on the spindle?

    ReplyDelete
  63. What about the song that plays when Becky walks the aisle in Time for a Wedding?

    ReplyDelete
  64. I will never look at that fluffy dessert the same ever again!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Gracias. And glad to see you've got all your bases covered in terms of poll categories, haha.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Ha, I was a year old at the end of the 80s, but I've always been an 80s child at heart. And there's no harm in extending the song-to-scene polls, right? I'm not sure how much time you've got blocked for this contest, but I feel like we have years and years to wait out before the show comes back in January ;)

    ReplyDelete
  67. That's my philosophy in these contests too. This one is pure what I like. That's why I didn't use any Supernatural clips for the list. The next one is all about how perfect the song was for the scene, not how much I like the scene. If any song could be played, it doesn't make my cut.

    ReplyDelete
  68. My thought was to do the polls in December and then the ranking articles for 15 days in January. That would lead us right to the midseason premiere.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Come on. You have to do the middle even if it seems impossible. Think of it as a Winchester mission. We've got work to do.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I have divided all episodes into a number scale 1 - 5, even season 8 epis. Unfortunately 24 are in the 1 category but I think I can get to the top 15 pretty easily out of those 24. It's breaking it down further that's so difficult.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I started posting for SpoilerTV in October 2010 with "What's wrong with Sam?" being the first and most popular poll I've posted. I'd like to do the new poll suggestions first instead of re-doing the older ones but after that who knows.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Of course, but it would always get lost and then we were stuck.

    ReplyDelete
  73. sadly I think for the first few rounds of this poll the better song in many cases (at least in my opinion) will lose because people won't separate the show from the song...oh well! It's all in good fun, right? :D

    ReplyDelete
  74. For the contender in Season 7 Time for a Wedding is Cherish, which plays during their first meal. Listen to the words and tell me they aren't absolutely pitch perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  75. You are undoubtedly right, similar to the best title contest. It can be hard for people to separate the song from Supernatural. To be honest if it's 2 songs I really don't care for, the scene may be the deciding factor for me too, but only if I really don't care for either song. Other than that I have some clear favorites.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I still have some of those and one of the big ones, so I could put several 45s and let them drop down, without the plastic thing coming out. lol Still have hundreds of 45s from the 50s & 60s.

    ReplyDelete
  77. These are the ones I would really like to get into..

    Favorite Episode - by season
    Favorite Angel (excluding Castiel)
    Favorite Demon
Favorite Human (excluding Dean, Sam, and Bobby)
    Favorite Object
Favorite Other Character (not human, demon, or angel)
Favorite Recurring Character (not Dean, Sam, Bobby, or Castiel)

    ReplyDelete
  78. ha, it does not take much to remind me of something on SPN. My favorite show ever on TV and that covers a lot of ground..I remember our first black and white TV, huge set, small screen..

    ReplyDelete
  79. That is how I picked Silent Lucidity in 1B poll.

    ReplyDelete
  80. yeah, I can totally agree with your methods in the case of "meh" songs :)

    ReplyDelete
