Supernatural 8.09 “Citizen Fang” was the fall finale of the show. It was written by Daniel Loflin who we are used to seeing write with Andrew Dabb. Dabb, of course, solo’ed on last week’s episode, “Hunteri Heroici”. This week’s episode also featured a director new to the show: Nick Copus. We had a couple of really beautiful shots, including the shot up through the water of Benny as he washes the blood and dirt off of his hands. You may have recognized guest star Kathleen Munroe. In this episode she played Elizabeth, but she was also in episode 3.02, “The Kids Are Alright” as Katie’s Mom. As befits a fall finale, we saw a lot of the story threads that have been developing come to a head in this episode. While I’m anxious to find out more and see what’s next for the brothers Winchester, I didn’t feel like we had a major cliffhanger to chew our nails over during hellatus this year.
Clearwater Revival plays. Two thumbs up for some awesome classic rock. Inside the cafe, he’s being watched by Martin Creaser, played again by Jon Gries. Martin seemed as nervous and gittery as the last time we saw him in “Sam Interrupted”, but to me, he also seemed a bit rude – not really the nice guy we’d met before. Dean is not happy when he finds out that Sam has had Martin tailing Benny. Dean repeatedly tells Sam that Martin shouldn’t be on the job, and he tells Martin repeatedly that he’s going to get killed. Both Sam and Martin defend his right to be there, but in the end, Dean is right about Martin getting himself killed.
Dean defends Benny, but also maintains that he will do the right thing if Benny really is killing people. Sam finally agrees to let Dean have a couple of hours to determine if Benny is a threat. Martin is shocked. And I begin to wonder what the rest of the hunting community may think about Dean’s newest friend if the word does get out.
This episode gave us some great insights into Benny and Ty Olsson is simply a joy to watch. I think he broke my heart at least twice in this one episode. The first time was when he told Dean that he was in Louisiana because he was looking for family. He specifically tells Dean that he’d come back to where he was born because Andrea was gone and Dean was back hunting, and both Andrea and Dean had been the family that kept him on the straight and narrow; they were the ones to keep him from drinking humans. So now, Benny is using Elizabeth – his great granddaughter to keep him honest. This means, of course, that when Benny calls Dean “brother”, he means it a lot more than maybe Dean realized.
The second time Olsson’s Benny broke my heart was in the confrontation with Martin over Elizabeth. Both Olsson and Munroe are fantastic in this scene, with both giving raw performances. Munroe had worked with director Copus on Alphas, so that may have been a factor in her terrific performance or it may be that both actors were so completely in the moment. At any rate, when Benny bends himself over the counter, Copus gives us a great shot through the pie caddy of Benny’s anguished face, tears brimming. It seems like he’s sacrificing himself for the only family he has, but in the end, he’s destroyed by the fact that he knows he’ll be cutting himself off from her forever when she discovers what he is.
The scenes with Olsson and Ackles just keep getting better. The two have an almost ridiculous amount of chemistry together on the screen and one’s performance just seems to make the other’s better. Dean is trying to do his best to keep Benny safe. He so clearly wants to trust Benny, and their wary reunion as they both check each other out was sad to see. The two also kill the comic scenes as Benny makes sure that Dean wasn’t hitting on his great granddaughter and Dean obviously registers how awkward that is.
My heart broke for Dean when he told Benny that “Guys like us, we don’t get a home. We don’t get a family” because of course, those are the very things that both Dean and Benny want so badly. Benny reminds Dean that he’s got Sam. Dean’s answer is “yeah” but it’s clear from the expression on his face that he doesn’t feel like he does have Sam. And he’s justified in thinking that. Dean’s inability to help Benny in the end seems to be the beginning of the end for them and I really hope that the show finds some way to keep Benny because Olsson has added a terrific new element to the show. However, right from when Benny kills Desmond, he says to Dean that he’s missing a step. Somehow when they were fighting in Purgatory, they seemed more equal, but it seems clearer and clearer that Dean is becoming more “human” as Benny is becoming more “vamped” and less able to resist his bloodlust. The shot of Benny through the empty pie caddy was also a nice shout out to Dean – who once again didn’t get his pie in this episode.
The relationship between Dean and Sam has once again been strained to the breaking point and the episode leaves them separated – though the scenes for “Torn and Frayed” which airs on January 9, 2013, show them back together again. Dean practically has to beg Sam to give him time to talk to Benny to find out what’s actually going on. Sam seems to be in a really big hurry to kill Benny first and ask questions later. Sam asks Dean if they “are just going on trust here?” Sam means is he supposed to trust Benny, but in reality, Dean is once again asking Sam to trust him – and Sam if very reluctant to do so. In the end, he tells Dean he’s too close to the situation to make a reliable decision. Faced with Martin’s death at Benny’s hands, it’s going to be interesting to see what Dean does going forward. That has always been his tipping point, and as much as he can justify that Martin had it coming – and I think he did – he crossed a line in using a civilian like Elizabeth as bait – Dean will be tormented by the situation. His entire life, his father’s legacy, will be demanding he kill his friend. I think that Benny won’t continue to drain humans – making him hard to track and further complicating Dean’s ultimate decision.
While Sam isn’t the one to knock Dean unconscious and he’s shocked that Martin does it, he also helps to handcuff Dean to the radiator. He’s also most likely the one to have the forethought to take off Dean’s jacket before handcuffing him to remove his various lock picks from reach – though in the end, Dean obviously had a paperclip stashed somewhere else on his body. Martin brings up John on a couple of occasions and even tells Sam that John would have taken them both out to the woodpile to punish them for the way they’re acting. It’s doubtful that Martin could say anything that would make Dean feel more guilty than raising the spectre of John’s disappointment.
I had to wonder if Martin’s comment to Sam that “Your brother chooses a vampire over his own brother? I know how I’d feel” has to have a lot of resonance with Sam. After all, Dean said almost the exact same thing to Sam – “You chose a demon (Ruby) over your own brother?” Sam has to feel doubly guilty because while Ruby turned out to be evil, Benny has so far seemed to be innocent. In fact, Sam has to feel bad that it was a vampire that rescued Dean from Purgatory, not him. Sam obviously is also stung by the fact that Dean trusts Benny more than Dean trusts Sam – though Dean doesn’t deny it. Once again, my heart broke for a character when Dean says to Sam, “Every relationship I’ve ever had has gone to crap on me at some point.” Sam is simply mad that Dean feels that way about him, but Sam has let Dean down in the past. John let Dean down. Arguably Bobby’s only fault was dying, but he also came back as a vengeful spirit whom Dean had to kill. Dean also had to give up Lisa and Ben to protect them.
I’m sure a lot of people were irked at Dean for the fake call to Sam from Amelia. However, it’s also very telling that Sam dropped everything to go to her. I feel badly for Sam because he does so obviously care for Amelia – but more about them in a moment. Dean, however, was once again justified to think that Sam would choose the girl over everything else. Sam left Martin in the middle of the woods in an uncertain position as he didn’t really know where the vampires were and he left town, leaving Dean handcuffed to a wall. Sam left both of them vulnerable and left the vampires free to kill whomever they chose.
I think that it’s got to be obvious by now that Amelia is real. And that Don is likewise real and not just some figment of Sam’s imagination. However, it is possible that Sam and Amelia's relationship is not what it seems in Sam’s flashbacks. It didn’t really make a lot of sense for Sam to say that he wanted to stay with Amelia and then to leave. In fact, all Don asked Sam for was to let Amelia make up her own mind. Sam doesn’t do that – he takes himself out of the equation. He tells Amelia that she “saved him” and that she should now do that for Don. It’s not really respecting her to take the decision away from her. I found it curious that Sam is packing what looks like the same knapsack as we see in the first episode this season, but instead of it being dark and Amelia being in bed, it’s light and she’s in the doorway. Are we to infer that he comes back after this? It doesn’t make sense for him to be in the room at night with her – and for her to be alone with Riot – if she’d gotten back together with Don. There are still a lot of loose ends.
This was a really dense episode emotionally for Benny, Dean, and Sam. I love how much of the previous seasons we’re seeing woven into the story. I do wish that the brothers would begin to see how much pain the other is in. Dean has always been desperate for some stability and reassurance, and Sam has always yearned for some sense of a normal life. In many ways, they are both looking for the same thing. I really hope that this season finally sees both characters finally mature enough to recognize what the other needs.
While the story didn’t leave us with a “how are they going to avoid death” kind of cliffhanger, the brothers are still at a crossroads as to where they go from here. We do see Dean once again reaching out to try to talk to Sam and Sam shutting him down because he’s just too angry to talk to him. I’m hoping that Amelia may be the person to give Sam some insight into dealing with that person from his past who he loves, but who maybe came back at the wrong time. I really think that Amelia and Don’s relationship forms a nice parallel to Sam and Dean. Don and Dean both came back from the “war” and disrupted the life Sam and Amelia had built.
What did you think of the episode? Where do you think we’ll go from here? Will Sam stay in contact with Amelia now? Is Dean going to be forced to kill Benny? Should he? I say no – because I want to keep Ty Olsson around! Let me know your thoughts in the comments... And massive re-watch for the hellatus anyone??

I'm going out on a limb and say I don't think Benny killed Martin, I think Elizabeth did and that is what Dean wanted to tell Sam. She had way to much blood on her hands and her cut was not that bad.
ReplyDeleteI don't think what Sam is seeing in the flashbacks are real, I have to believe that if I am going to keep faith in Sam and I want desperately to find my Sam that did try and look for Dean. If not and was just shacked up, then where did he learn the Demon curse backward, how when he met Benny did he have the vamp flash, just to many things going on that are NOT Sam. I mean he does not like hunting, but even when Lucifer was killing him, he still made it to try and help Dean and stab Cas/God. Now he just drops out, I'm not going to believe it.....yet.
I was screaming at the TV last night and this is the first ep in a long time that was a white knuckle for me. I love Benny and Ty puts that spark in the show that I saw in season 4 with Misha.
Excellent review and kudos to J2 and all the actors that made for a very heartbreaking ep.
Honestly, the worst episode of Supernatural. Ever.
ReplyDeleteI did think Elizabeth had a lot of blood on her too - and when she surged out of the chair screaming no... I actually wondered right from the jump whether she was a vamp too. That would certainly tie in with the whole perception vs reality theme too. But it doesn't really explain why she called Dean or sat there shaking covered in blood... still, it would be nice to think Benny was still holding on.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid I don't understand why people think Sam dropping out is not in character. If I had to pick a brother, I would lean toward Dean, but I don't blame Sam for not looking and I don't think badly of him for not doing it. They DID promise to let each other die- and Bobby told them NOT to fight it too. And Sam had nowhere to look - for all he knew, Dean was simply blown to bits when Dick was. He was all alone. It's like learning that not only did Dean torture people in hell, he also enjoyed it. I hated that layer to his character, but it wasn't inconsistent with the torture he was going through or the way John raised them. He's struggled with being a killer for most of the series. This may not be Sam's best character trait - running away - but he has done it before, and it's consistent with his character. As for the the backwards demon exorcism, I think Sam is clever enough to come up with that on the spot, or even if he wasn't fighting, he'd still think about hunting and mull things like that over. You can see quite clearly when he realizes Benny is a vamp when he shakes his hand. As someone who is technically the "undead", Benny would be cold to the touch.
I so, so agree about Ty adding a real spark to this season. My fingers are crossed for your theory there because it would really, really suck if Dean has to kill him now...
And J2 really have been bringing their A-game this season! So many great episodes coming up too!!
Nope, I disagree about Sam, every time Dean has been gone Sam has tried to find him. When he thought the Trickster was to blame for his death, he spent months hunting for him. Tried to trade his soul for Dean's when he went to hell, he has ALWAYS tried. So him just tuning out, just does not ring true to Sam's character. Yes he wants out of hunting, but he would not just leave Dean missing.
ReplyDeleteI don't think epidode was the worst ever, but as a midseason finale!?!? Really!? So disappointing. I still don't get the point of the Amelia and Sam story, especially the fact they're putting the most emphasis on it by ending the last two episodes with it. It's making Supernatural more of a CW show with the whole romance and drama element, which just completely takes away from the series. This is not the Supernatural I grew to love over 7 seasons
ReplyDeleteThat was freaking amazing.
ReplyDeleteIt is possible that Elizabeth is a vamp too. i mean we know Bennys creazpt was turned his the woman he came back for into a vamp , it would have been easy for him to find his granddaughter. Maybe he even tried to protect his granddaughter because she killed this 2 people but then again he wouldn't leave her there if she was one would he ?
Dean and Sams relationship feels like Marriage . At the beginning you are in love and protective of this connection then stuff happens, fights , lies arguments etc and its hard to repare the demages.
I wonder why Amelia is so opsessed with Sam to leave the house to find him at the bar. . Why would he go to the same bar where ppl know him and would tell Don that he was back in town .
Exactly . it made no sense to hear that Sam didn't even try to find out what happened to his brother. Even if he believed he died where did he go . he knows Heaven is no lolipops and unicorn. why wouldn't he try to help him
ReplyDelete1-Benny=Amy
ReplyDeleteSam trusted Amy and asked Dean to trust Sam himself, Dean went behind Sam's back and killed Amy because HE had no reason to trust her and HE didnt trust Sam's judgement.
Sam went behind Dean's back to keep an eye on Benny because HE had no reason to trust Benny and HE didnt trust Dean's judgement.
Amy killed to save her son.
Benny (possibly) killed Martin to save his family.
2-Jeremy Carver said Martin was probably the sainest one in the episode, while fans perceived Martin to be Crazy because he used a method they didnt approve of and went after a vampire who has been precieved to be a goody two shoes-the show/Carver actually tells us that Martin did what a hunter not named Sam or Dean would do when they know a vampires where abouts. Most bnormal hunters are black and white, Sam and Dean are shades of grey.
3-Martin gets Martin killed with a dash of Sam and Dean's help-Dean knew what he was doing when he sent that text message to Sam, he wanted Sam away from Benny because he knew Sam would kill Benny. He used Sam's feelings for Amelia against him sending Sam on a wild goose chase and leaving Martin alone. Reagrdless of whether Sam told Martin he was taking off or not Martin being a hunter would still have gone after Benny because thats what hunters do. Dean doesnt send the text, Sam would have stayed and Martin would not have died. Sam didnt invlve Martin in the first place and Martin would still have been alive. Martin wasnt a hunter and he would still be alive.
4-Dean's feelings that Sam has chosen a girl over him have been justified?-really not, Dean gave Sam no choice but to go and save Amelia who he thought was in danger thanks to Dean's text. Does Sam save the innocent (Amelia) or stay to sort the Benny situation out? Also if Sam can be perceived to be chosing Amelia over Dean in this situation then Dean can also be seen to be choseing Benny, he cruelly manipulated Sam in order to save Benny from Sam and again riterated his stance that Benny is a better brother.
5-maybe Don can give Dean a better insight into how to handle someone who has been left alone, thinking their loved one was dead only for them to pop back up and disrupt what semblance of stability they have managed to cobble together.
6-Dean's text was cruel and manipulative, Sam not wanting to hear about Benny at that moment was totally understandable nor was it important in that moment. Sam had just seen Amelia and Don seemingly ok again, that had to hurt. Unless Dean was calling for help or saying someone was in danger I would have hung up on him to, what he had to say in that moment just wasnt important.
7-Sam chose Ruby over Dean and now Dean chose Benny over Sam so now they're even, Dean cant throw that back at Sam anymore. Tit for tat right?
8-'all Don asked Sam for was to let Amelia make up her own mind. Sam doesn’t do that – he takes himself out of the equation. He tells Amelia that she “saved him” and that she should now do that for Don. It’s not really respecting her to take the decision away from her'-ever think Sam was doing what was right for him?
9-'Sam left both of them vulnerable and left the vampires free to kill whomever they chose'-poor Dean and poor Martin neither of them stand a chance without superSam! Neither of them are seasoned hunters or can think for themselves. Dean was never in any danger unless I missed something and Martin was a hunter, a seasoned hunter who would have gone after Benny with or without Sam because he's a hunter and Benny is a vampire and hunters kill vampires. You make the assumption that all hunters are as moraly grey as the Winchester brothers, the show has shown up that most if not all hunters not Sam and Dean will put any and all monsters down and not give a shit if they done eat humans.
10-clearly you think Dean is a saint and can do no wrong, Sam is just the bad brother.
Why would Dean be forced to kill Benny? Why should he? Benny did nothing wrong. Even if he killed Martin, well, it was in defense of an innocent.
ReplyDeleteaslo, sure Dean trusted a vampire over his own brother, but then again his own brother trusted a mentaly unstable hunter over Dean so...seems fair to me.
Also Sam went off with Martin, leaving a bloody Dean handcuffed to the wall. I still think Elizabeth killed Martin.
ReplyDeleteThe more I think about it, Benny laid his head down for Martin to chop it off. He was sacrificing his life for Elizabeth. Yeah, maybe she did kill Martin when she realized Benny/Roy was a relative, or maybe just someone who cared enough to die for her. Either way, there was a lot of blood on her.
ReplyDeleteI am angry at Sam for just dropping everything and leaving both Dean and Martin in positions where they could die at the hands of the vampires. That is so not like Sam. What is so very sad is Dean knew he would do it...leave him for Amelia.
The flashbacks are confusing. I will agree with you. Some are real, I think, but I believe some of them are not.
I love Ty Olsson and want him to stay as Dean's friend. Right now, Dean needs that. Castiel is not staying with them and Dean needs someone. He knows he can't trust Sam and that is killing me.
I loved the on the edge of your seat, biting fingernails and yelling tv I had last night. The last time I had that was Lucifer Rising. It's been a long, long time. I liked last weeks episode. Maybe splitting up those two writers was a good idea.
I hate hellatus. Should we do a rewatch of season 8 up to now or just an incredibly busy marathon? I'm game.
It could also be Amilia ( as an angel or demon. )or somebody else who wants the brothers apart . Doesn't mean Benny did it , it looks like he wanted to die because he knew he didn't want to hide for the rest of his life and being unable to see his family .
ReplyDeleteI am not quite thru with the new Companion Book and got in the beautiful Essential SPN on the road with Sam and Dean Winchester book, that I have not had time to look at and it is HUGE with lots of goodies stuck in it. Also the new issue of SPN mag should be here any day, plus I have watched season 4 and all but Bitten in season 8 several times. So much goodness, so little time. We do have some polls that will be coming now, looking forward to them.
ReplyDeleteGood review of a good episode.
ReplyDeleteI actually kind of like, for once, getting a mid-season finale that DOESN'T have a huge white-knuckle cliff-hanger. It's a welcome change for what's become the latest TV cliche: we must leave at least some of our characters in immediate mortal jeopardy before every hiaitus, to make sure the audience comes back. No, actually. I liked the way this ep wrapped up its main plot but left a lot simmering beneath the surface--stuff has to be resolved, but it's a slow burn, not a conflagration.
This episode really resonated with the Rugaru episode for me--with the brothers' roles again reversed. I think there's a lot of irony in how each brother seems unable to recognize how they keep finding themselves in similar situations and keep reversing how they react to the other. Sam IS doing to Dean what Dean did to him before--and vice versa. It's interesting and well-motivated, character-wise, I think. OTOH, I'd be glad to see the apparent belief that the brothers need to some extent to be at each others' throats jettisoned.
Overall, though, another strong episode in a real comeback season. I find it a bit baffling that this season is not generating more raves.
Martin may of been jerky but that doesnt equate to mentally unstable otherwise we can apply that to most hunters even Sam and Dean.Yes Sam left Dean there for the same reason Dean claimed he made the false text message, I understand Benny is the new flavour of the month and Dean's latest better brother but to Martin he was none of those things
ReplyDeleteI dont want Dean to go unnoticed either in this episode by focusing just on Sam'.
Well, I have to say I have some trouble with Sam not looking at all and still hope we'll get more of an explanation, but I'm afraid I also just don't find it either completely unbelievable or completely out of character. And I'm not seeing any reason not to take the Amelia stuff at face value.
ReplyDeleteI didn't consider the possibility of Elizabeth being the one who killed Martin and makes sense, though the neck wound looked like Benny took a bite possibly the amount of blood made him lose it so he's gone underground like he intended.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you've brought up the same plot holes (at least unaddressed plot points) that were plaguing me, namely how we started the season with Sam seemingly leaving Amelia in the middle of the night, but that doesn't seem to be adding up.
ReplyDeleteAs always, you know the boys so well, and truly understand how I honestly believe each of them was feeling during this episode, and while my husband and I both agreed it was a little low for Dean to pull the fake text, I'm right with you that he had more justification in doing that than any of Sam's actions lately.
But I'm glad you bring up that Sam being...well, such a bitch, is probably coming more from his own guilt in that everything Dean keeps throwing at him is the truth - Benny has been the best friend Dean has ever had, because he's been honest with him and hasn't let him down; Benny saved Dean when Sam didn't - and Sam's reacting to that guilt with anger.
I'm just getting so sick of Sam's sidestory. I'm disliking him so much, it's hard to care about what happens to him, especially when I find Dean's story, and Castiel's, and Benny's all so compelling. I don't like or care about Amelia, either, so I keep checking out whenever we go into Sam's flashbacks, and there are SO MANY of them, when Dean covered his Purgatory flashbacks so much more quickly. I viscerally hate Sam this season, and I really don't know what can be done to fix that, so for me, the Show has alot to make up for to redeem Sam's character in my eyes, more so now than I ever felt with Ruby or things he's done in the past.
I will say that while I am almost positive Benny will die, I hope it isn't Dean who kills him, and if it's Sam, I'll never forgive him. I never really forgave Dean for killing Amy, but I have been able to cope with it more because Dean finally has come to realize that 'not human' doesn't have to mean 'evil', and that is such a huge character change for him.
So, as I was at the start of this season, I'm torn, because I like several things that have been happening, but Sam...all the good feelings I had for him when he finally came back from Hell and we got rid of RoboSam, that swell of 'wow I didn't realize how much I'd missed the old Sam'...is long gone, because all that remains of the old Sam are (what I consider to be) his faults - his selfish need for normal, and a disregard for Dean, when Dean has always been willing to give up so much more for him. I just thought he was better than that by now.
I don't hate Sam, but am not liking him much this season, but I still cling to the thought it is NOT our Sam. Something is going on with him and think it will be worked out...HOPE, HOPE, HOPE. lol
ReplyDeleteThat's why I keep watching - I do still hope, it's just really frustrating and hard right now. :-) But wow, reading down at some other comments, I'm remembering why I don't often read reviews, because people start attacking each other over opinion - it's always just opinion. Like I can totally understand why you DON'T hate Sam right now, even though I do. But have you read some of the comments below?! Youzers.
ReplyDeleteBut I keep forgetting to bring up a point that's been plaguing me for some time, and hits at both Sam and Dean - their complete lack of caring over collateral damage, especially in regards to demons. They just kill them all without thought, never even considering exorcism. The only time they did was a reversal to KEEP a demon in someone. And I know one could argue that they have to kill the demons or they'll warn Crowley of their plans, but take the case of the guy they had in the trunk. He was bound by rope AND a Devil's trap. If they didn't want to risk letting him out before they stormed after Crowley, they could have left him in the trunk and then saved the poor man who was being possessed after the fact, but they don't even try, even when it wouldn't be much effort to save someone. It really disturbs me and doesn't seem to be being addressed at all (though, as I've said, I haven't read previous reviews, so maybe it has been brought up before).
Great review!! I think you hit the nail on the head. Dean came back at the wrong time. Its an inconvenience Sam hasn't figured out how to deal with yet. He's going through the motions but it's obvious he's torn between the life he knows and the life he wants. Although I'm not sold on Amelia at all, I honestly do not see what Sam sees in her, I'm confused as to why he would leave when it has become obvious he didn't know anything about Dean being alive and felt like she belonged with him. He says he's trying to do the right thing but he's contradicting himself left and right. Very confusing
ReplyDeleteI love Benny and hope he sticks around. Great character and so well played. Dean related well to him -- both fish out of water. I hope Sam can get past his own issues with his past (Ruby) and give Benny the benefit of the doubt. But now that Martin is dead I can't see that happening. It's too bad. Sam will kill his relationship with his brother if he continues the way he's going and Dean will simply lose everything if Benny ends up killing Sam. Is it any wonder Dean went to such great lengths to trick Sam and avoid that confrontation?
I've stated in almost if not every review that I understand where Sam is coming from and I don't hate him for what he's done - I quite understand it. I also understand where Dean is coming from. The fact that the characters are often at odds with one another and see situations differently makes them well-drawn characters. Neither brother is a saint or evil.
ReplyDeleteSo eventually when they do die - because they aren't going to live forever - what other option is there? Heaven would seem to be the best of a list of bad alternatives...
ReplyDeleteThanks! I really hope that Benny does get a handle on his bloodlust, but I think it's unlikely. He seems gradually to be losing his hold on being a "friendly" vampire. It is really tragic though that it seems obvious that having family was the one thing keeping him on the straight and narrow and now that's been taken from him. Dean and Sam have acted as each other's conscience over the years, so it's an interesting parallel to that...
ReplyDeleteI so agree! But I think that unfortunately fandom is so entrenched in what it wants the show to be that it can't accept what it is. I like that the brothers can take such different views of events - to me that's very realistic. People change how they perceive the world based upon their personal experiences. Dean and Sam have had VERY different experiences, so even though they keep coming on events that are similar to past events, it is natural and realistic that they would have different reactions. I loved the Rugaru reference - so true!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree about splitting those writers up! I was never a huge fan of what they produced together (2 of my least favorite episodes actually), but they've done great on their solo projects! I like the idea of a massive re-watch... We have so many guest stars popping up from previous seasons that I feel like I need to re-fresh my memory! Carver warned us not to trust what we are seeing - that perceptions might not be what we think, so I am anxious to hear what Dean was going to tell Sam about what happened at the cafe...
ReplyDeleteDean has said that if Benny starts "draining" people, he will kill him. He even warned Benny that he would be forced to do it. Dean was prepared to kill him when he first went to Benny in the episode - remember he had his machete out. I hope that Dean will understand that Martin forced his hand - but Benny didn't HAVE to feed on Martin to kill him or incapacitate him to get away. Dean may feel it's his duty now to kill him...
ReplyDeleteFor me I just don't care, just thinking of the show, if they had to stop and exorcise every demon, that is all the show would be. Kill them and move on. lol
ReplyDeleteI was really wondering if Elizabeth was a vamp too and hiding it. It's pretty clear that Desmond is the one responsible for the 2 kills, but what if he also managed to turn Elizabeth at some point - or she already was one. Martin may have figured that out when he grabbed her wrist when she was going to take his pie - the same way Sam knew Benny was a vamp when he shook his hand... I am really anxious to know more about what happened at the cafe!
ReplyDeleteI agree, Dean and Sam's relationship is definitely like a marriage!
I wonder if some part of Sam balked at having a relationship with Amelia and he managed to ruin the relationship or just used Don as an excuse to walk away because he couldn't deal with it... or it's one theory anyway!
As for #1 - Dean didn't trust Sam at that point because Lucifer was riding shotgun. Sam had been hallucinating and checking out - losing touch with reality. And frankly, I think that Dean admitted that killing Amy might not have been a good idea. AND I thought Dean was wrong to do it.
ReplyDeleteSure nice to see at least ONE person can see Sam's side of things. Man reading that review you would think Dean could do no wrong and walk on water. And Sam, well he apparently can do no RIGHT. Funny how when Dean killed Amy everyone was on Dean's side. Now the shoe's on the other foot and everyone STILL takes Dean's side. Much as I love Dean this time he is wrong and Sam has every right to be pissed and hurt. How many times so far has Dean thrown up the fact he doesn't trust him? Or remind him that he didn't look for him? Sam is right, get over it and move on.
ReplyDeleteI actually had the same thought considering how much blood was on her but couldnt justify the mess Martins neck was in. But after thinking about it i could see Elizabeth killing or attacking Martin to try and stop him and Benny then killing him in an attempt to save her. Carver did say this season was about perception and right now the perception is that Benny killed Martin. What if that perception is wrong?
ReplyDeleteCarver has said repeatedly that this season is a lot about the difference between perception and reality. So two episodes ago we saw Dean and Cas parting ways at the door to Purgatory and how the two of them viewed the event quite differently. I don't think that a lot of what we are seeing as inconsistencies at this point are - I think they are different points of view and we are going to have to be patient to see how they play out. I also think that how they play out is going to have a HUGE impact on how we view what Sam did. I'm kind of amused that I'm actually a lot more sympathetic to Sam this season than I have been for a long time. I think it is realistic for them to be such different people- from each other. It makes for good drama - just wish the drama didn't spill out into fandom...
ReplyDeleteI agree that killing Amy was problematic ... but killing her and then NOT killling the kid was downright idioic. He needs human pituitaries to live. Where's he gonna get those wihtout a mortitian mother? If he has someone to go to, they'll be providing him, one assumes, with fresh ones, So Dean's next logical step ought to have been to hunt THEM down, too. The kid might not have killed anyone, but his particular condition elaves him no choice--unlike, say, a rugaru that hasn't eaten human meat yet, or a vampire that can live on plasma or animal blood. The kid has only one option: kill folks for their pituitaries.
ReplyDeleteBut then, to have Dean kill the kid.... nobody'd go for that. That was one of the weaker episodes of the entire series (despite the shiny Jewel Staite) precisely because it was so poorly thought through.
We loved, loved, loved "Citizen Fang." An emotional roller coaster with breathtaking filming locations, perfect Southern music and absolutely beautiful color and light compositions. Once again, the writing was fantastic and so was the guest cast. It was interesting to learn more about Benny the vampire and how much Dean trusted him. In one way, he shares a more profound bond with him than with his brother even though they love each other very much, but Dean and Benny's experience in purgatory can't compete with the ups and down he had with his little brother. We were also thrilled to see that Jensen Ackles got an opportunity to shine in this episode and he definitely shone brighter than a shooting star. It's superb how the writers continuously come up with new, intriguing story lines that lead the brothers on a new path of self-discovery. We love to explore different aspects of their personalities and how their experiences shape and change them over time.
ReplyDeleteI am having a problem with Sam and the way it is kind of sleepwalk when he is with Amelia. Jared is a much better actor than what he is showing when being Sam with Amelia, unless that is the side he wants to show. He just looks uncomfortable and ill at ease when with her. Does not speak like usual. Is it just that I want my Sam that I love back and looking for any excuse?
ReplyDeletenope, what equates to mentally unstable is having spend a long long time in a mental health institution and only being out for about a month before being thrown back into hunting which is a hobby that requires strong mental health vs. recovering patients being encouraged to take their time to adjust back in the outside world in as stress free an environment as possible *shrug* u take a former patient and throw him in that kind of mess? 'mentally unstable' is what comes to mind... Sam didn't do poor Martin any favours; he should have recommended a nice spa instead
ReplyDeleteYouv'e got to be kidding! You're blaming DEAN for this? It was all SAM'S fault, the whole situation! If he had just shown a little faith in Ddean, Benny wouldv'e killed Desmond himself, Martin would be alive, and Elizabeth would'nt have had to go through what she went through! It was SAM'S fault that he left Martin! No body told hi to just drop everything and everybody at the drop of a hat for this chick! And the sad thing is Dean knew Sam didn't care about anybody but her and himself! Wow!
ReplyDeleteNo, Dean can and has done wrong. And sorry, but am WAS a selfish, selfcentered, uncaring asshole in this episode. Where the hell does he have a right to be pissed about anything? No, it's Dean that has the right to be hurt and pissed. Sam has been treating him like crap ever since he got back from Purgatory. You people amaze me. Y
ReplyDeleteNo, Sam was NOT right, you get over it. I love Sam but the way some of you excuse absolutely EVERYTHING wrong he does, wow. When Dean does any of the crp Sam is currently doing, I will call him an asshole too. Right now it's Sam that's the asshole.
ReplyDeleteYes Sam was right Dean was in the wrong it's ruby all over again but with Dean and sam knows he made a mistake with Ruby and doesn't want Dean to make the same mistake with Benny and let's not forget Dean killed Amy so it makes dean come off a hypocrite IMHO
ReplyDeleteNo, he wasn't Sam was a total dick this whole episode. Has Dean been a dick in the past? Yes, he has, but not this time. If Benny pulls a Ruby then yes, Sam will be proven right, but since we saw Benny away from Dean, we saw he is sincere. I'm sorry that you will forgive Sam anything because you love him, but he was so blatantly wrong this whole episode.
ReplyDeleteWhat's this Dean chose Benny over Sam crap? Dean did NOT chose Benny over Sam, he simply wanted to give him a chance, because he earned it. If he screws up, Dean will kill him, and he knows this.
ReplyDeleteTo me, it's more fans like YOU who refuse to see where Sam does anything wrong, and Dean can do no right. They have BOTH been wrong, yes even Sam, many times!
ReplyDeleteI so agree! Supernatural is blessed with an amazing crew and production team that delivers an amazing looking show week in and week out with attention to every detail. And I also totally agree with your assessment of the writing. We are so passionate about the characters precisely because they are so well and carefully drawn. Each viewer is able to identify with something in one of the brothers, I think. That can be a double edged sword...
ReplyDeleteRather like Jeffrey in "Repo Man" last season.... that certainly didn't end well either...
ReplyDeleteyou made me almost cry . I tried to ignore the fact that Sam simply left after he got the message. I was upset that he left Martin alone just like that with no ride back home or something, WHERE is SAMMY the guy who cared to much . Dean was the one who killed first asked questions later and now it looks like they changed roles.
ReplyDeleteAnd Dean knowing Sam would leave him for Amelia hurts me.
I don't think that Sam worried that Benny would kill Dean he had a feeling that they would either go seperate ways than attack each other but he should know that Martin would be an easy target if he tried to attack Benny during his tracking. That would be self-defence .
I am not so sure if somebody else took Benny . I don't think that he would leave her with a death body where she had to explain it to the cops If she killed him wouldn't Benny try to hide the body ? It could be that somebody followed Benny and took him , even demons could have taken him to get to Dean maybe thats what he wanted to tell Sam but rather another vamp
Yes, the fact that Dean was sure Sam would go to Amelia, was heartbreaking.
