Clean Sweep for CBS; Take It All Not a Keeper on NBC
Thursday 12/13/12
Household
Rating/Share
CBS 8.8/14
ABC 5.1/ 8
Fox 4.6/ 7
NBC 2.6/ 4
CW 1.6/ 3
----------
-Percent Change from the Year-Ago Evening (Thursday 12/15/11):
CW: +129, NBC: +30, ABC and CBS: +13 each, Fox: -16
----------
-Winners:
The Big Bang Theory (CBS), Two and a Half Men (CBS), Person of Interest (CBS)
-Honorable Mention:
Grey’s Anatomy (ABC), Elementary (CBS), Scandal (ABC)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
Up All Night (NBC), Last Resort (ABC), Take It All (NBC), Beauty and the Beast (CW), Rock Center With Brian Williams (NBC)
----------
-Ratings Breakdown:
It was another clean Thursday overnight sweep for CBS care of red-hot The Big Bang Theory (11.1 rating/18 share - #1 for the evening), creatively tired Two and a Half Men (9.0/14), sophomore Person of Interest (9.3/15) and recent entry Elementary (7.2/12), which finished 13 percent below year-ago 10 p.m. occupant The Mentalist (8.3/14 on 12/15/11). Comparably, retention for Elementary out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of Person of Interest (9.1/14) was a respectable 79 percent.
Over at ABC, the positive news of note was retention for Scandal at 10 p.m. (#2: 5.5/ 9) out of veteran Grey’s Anatomy (#2: 6.3/10 at 9 p.m.) of an above-average 87 percent. Both dramas, of course, are from Shonda Rhimes, and the increased compatibility of the two is enough to keep Scandal on the air past this season.
Earlier in the evening on ABC was canceled drama Last Resort at a third-place 3.6/ 6 in the overnights at 8 p.m.
In episode four news, NBC game show Take It All is not a keeper with a distant fourth-place 2.5/ 4 at 9 p.m. Mirroring one day earlier (2.4/ 4 on Dec. 12, which translated into 3.40 million viewers and a 1.1/ 3 among adults 18-49, according to the Live Plus Dame Day data), Take It All resonated earlier in the week only because it aired out of The Voice. Four-day overnight track for Take It All: 4.3/ 7 – 4.7/ 8 – 2.4/ 4 – 2.5/ 4.
Take It All led into newsmagazine Rock Center with Brian Williams, which finished third at 10 p.m. with a 2.8/ 5. As a reminder, Rock Center With Brian Williams moves to Friday at 10 p.m. (out of two-hours of Dateline while drama Grimm is taking a temporary breather) in January.
Earlier in the evening on NBC were two episodes of sophomore comedy Up All Night (8 p.m. #4: 2.4/ 4; 8:30 p.m. #4, 2.3/ 4), which is heading on hiatus where it will switch from single camera to a multi-camera format.
Elsewhere, The X Factor on Fox, which concludes for the season next Thursday, finished second in the 8 p.m. hour with a 5.4/ 9. Comparably, that was 24 percent below the 7.1/12 on the year-ago evening. Relocated lead-out Glee, which always benefits significantly via DVR usage, finished third in the 9 p.m. hour with a 3.7/ 6.
The CW capped off this second Thursday in December with demo friendly The Vampire Diaries (#5: 2.1/ 3) and recent entry Beauty and the Beast, which dipped to a 1.2/ 2 from 9-10 p.m.

sounds good for scandal! hopefully it kept some of last week's surge ;)
ReplyDeletesolid winter finale for Shondaland....I so hope bc CAN top CBS once this season w/ new head to head episodes
ReplyDeleteI never get tired of seeing Person of Interest in the 'winners' category.
ReplyDeleteI'm intrigued by 'Up All Night' moving to a multi-camera format. Has any show done that before and did it improve the ratings? Bizarre! Be creative with writing, casting, etc, not with camera format. It's pointless.
ReplyDeleteI like how he considers Scandal an honorable mention when it hit another series high.
ReplyDeleteWow, WONDERFUL for Scandal! So happy, hope it won't be adjusted down. I've only started watching last week and catch up with all episodes and really like it now.
ReplyDeleteI know my market on ABC showed sports last night so I wouldn't be surprised to see these numbers adjusted down. I do think Scandal has stepped up a bit but at the same time, it's retaining more of a declining Grey's audience. It's overall numbers are still a bit underwhelming. It's a sign of the times, I suppose, that Scandal is a hit for ABC.
ReplyDeleteI´ve watched the 1st episode this week (I´m from Europe, and Scandal started airing in my country only now), but honestly didn´t like ... but maybe I´ll end up enjoying it with the new episodes...
ReplyDeleteI'm also from Europe and in my country(Poland) Scandal started airing some time earlier this year but I didn't watch it. I thought it would be canceled soon, like Shonda's last show. But it lasted and I was bored with shows I watched so I gave it a try. I have to say I don't think it's perfect series and sometimes find it difficult to follow a story of some episodes due to differences in law and political system but I like it. And mostly watch because of the great chemistry between Olivia and Fitz. Also I enjoy watching characters whose are not black and white but they're very grey.
ReplyDeleteHappy for POI and Elementary !
