Isn't the miller's daughter the fairy tale that Rumplestiltskin actually comes from? Since we've already gotten his origin story (at least as far as the gold-spinning, deal-making, first-born child taking Rumple goes), what could this possibly be about? The origin story for the non-magic Rumple? How he came to meet or marry his wife originally?

ReplyDeleteCora. Remember how Daniel described her as "the daughter of a miller" in the Stable Boy episode? And Rumple told Regina something about holding her in his arms when she was younger and that they were meant to be together this season. It all points to Cora being the miller's daughter in the original Rumplestiltskin fairytale and Regina being the child the miller's daughter promised to Rumplestiltskin. I can't wait for this episode.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure this will explore Cora and Rumple's backstory (most likely also Cora's origins), considering Rumplestiltskin's original fairy tale is about his deal with the Miller's Daughter. The show has turned this story into something more (as they have developed their own take on other fairy tales, too), so I assume this will introduce OUAT's take on their relationship and rivalry, etc.
ReplyDeleteyes, that's her STORYBROOKE surname. There is nothing to stop us assuming she (and her father) chose it because of Cora's connections. I would even go as far as hoping that Henry Mills isn't actually Regina's father but someone else, the actual miller - perhaps Cora loses him and makes some deal with Rumple to mirror the original Rumplestiltskin tale - but when she guesses his name (gets his dagger?), the deal is gone and all she's left with is Henry Mills instead?
ReplyDeleteIt might be her surname in FTL too, because we don't really know anything about Henry Mills Sr. either...we know Cora changed her life so her daughter could have one she didn't, she might have married 'the miller' and that is why she was SO put off with Daniel....

Its amazing how pretty much all of the misery in the series can be traced back to Rumpelstiltskin's machinations. Its kind of why I hope Bae laughs in his face and tells him to fuck off when they reunite.

ReplyDeleteIn the fairy tale, the miller's daughter strikes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin and ends up marrying the king. I wonder if Henry Sr. isn't actually Cora's second husband.

ReplyDeleteA popular theory seems to be that Cora was the wife King George talked about in the Lady of the Lake episode. The wife with whom he couldn't have any children.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Cora drank the poison to ensure she would never have a child she would have to give to Rumplestiltskin. Or she made the king believe she couldn't have any children and when she got pregnant anyway she ran away or faked her death or something that would give her a headstart and some time to think up another way to best Rumplestiltskin and make sure she wouldn't have to give him Regina.
It seems possible to me that King George and Cora's backstories are connected. They have to be careful with this though. Too many of those paternity twists could give Once Upon A Time a soap opera-ish feel.

I think you're right, but I do think their Land without Magic surnames reflect "occupations" and "characteristics" like ancient times did.

ReplyDeletethat's an interesting theory but it would work if FTL was small and everyone knew each other. We know for a fact that it isn't true and that it's actually a vast world. Making every character be connected to each other would really be pushing the boundaries and transforming it into a soap opera. Plus, they keep hiring so many new characters all the time so here's to hoping they will actually use them and not keep it withing the same circle.
