“I play a character called John and not that other name,” Benedict continued. “It’s interesting. Speculation is speculation and that’s all fun.”
On Tuesday, Benedict did reveal, however, some new details to Access’ MovieMantz at the junket for the first nine minutes of the film, “Star Trek Into Darkness,” which was first screened for journalists over the weekend.
“I play John Harrison who’s a terrorist and an extraordinary character in his own right,” the Brit said. “He’s somebody who is not your two-dimensional cookie cutter villain. He’s got an extraordinary purpose, and I hope that at one point or other in the film you might even sympathize with the reasons he’s doing what he’s doing — not necessarily the means and the destruction he causes. But it was a great ride, not just because he’s the bad guy and the antagonist but also because he has a purpose and it’s hard not to see his point of view at certain points.”

Just some speculation:
ReplyDeleteI would just like to note that Bad Robot is iconic for mix-matching names from their characters and their actors to make "new" characters...
Attempting to read into this a little, my first thoughts go to LOST with Terry O' Quinn's JOHN Locke and to FRINGE with Jared HARRIS and his two versions of David Robert Jones. In both cases those character believe they are out to do good, but also have major God Complex issues that lead them to do destructive things. -But because Fringe references Bad Robot's 2009 Star Trek, ("The Road Not Taken" + filming syle in "Letters of Transit" + Leonard Nimoy's William Bell) I would lean toward's FRINGE's theological terrorists and David Bowie-esque ideas here, which go along with Star Trek antagonists anyways.
Here's a pick of Johnny...
ReplyDeleteStill think they are covering up the true identity but also I think people need to stop going on about it. Reminds me of the Avengers and how everyone became obsessed with guessing who the aliens were and in the end it didn't really matter.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. Bad Robot has yet to be dishonest with something like this. If Cumberbatch was given authority to say anything, they wouldn't have him lie. (The official teaser is coming out soon too)
ReplyDelete-But that doesn't mean that John Harrison doesn't relate to people and events presented in the previous time line...creating new branch offs of reality is about seeing what repeats either a little, exact, or what is brand spanking new!
That'd be nice and would explain why this is "personal" for Kirk. But that kid was supposed to be Kirk's brother. I know that they've cut those scenes ultimately, but the writers do talk about it quite a bit on the commentary. I'm... not sure if they'd go with this, making Cumberbatch's character this 'Johnny'? (It would be uber-cool if they did, though.)
ReplyDeleteUnless this time line would change the name, James Kirk's brother was named George Samuel "Sam" after their father...but you could still be right if they changed the name.
ReplyDeletestill think John Harrison is either a pseudonym for Gary Mitchell or a composite of Mitchell, Garth, and Khan
ReplyDeleteGlad he isn't Khan.
ReplyDeletegood stuff!
