Dexter - Episode 7.11 - Do You See What I See - Spoilerly Preview

Thanks to Artur for the heads up.

Read the review and then let us know who you think says that line.

After Episode 11 ended, I had to sit back and think about what I just saw. The episode itself is another solid watch with good performances all around. And as I’ve said before, if you haven’t enjoyed the last few episodes because of the “soap opera” vibe, then there’s more fuel for the fire here. The final 10 minutes of the episode is filled with a nice, and unexpected, bit of suspense, as well as a resolution that has some real emotional weight and power. But the one thought that entered my mind as the end credits began to roll was...

“Did THAT just happen?”

I smiled, I shook my head, I was slightly confused, a little giddy, a little disappointed, but in the end... I was happy that things took a turn I didn’t expect (at least at this moment in time). Consider this moment to be the angry/happy chatter come Monday morning. More on this at the end...

It’s really hard at this stage to get into the specifics of the storyline without giving away some juicy spoilers, so I apologize if our traditional non-spoiler questions/answers might be a bit vague. Suffice to say that, as we can all figure out, the episode centres on the Dexter/Deb/Hanna relationship and Laguerta’s investigation. Some of our other “side plots” get a nod, and in a light-SPOILER fashion: Bautista officially gives his notice, and Quinn gets the polite kiss-off from Nadia. But that’s not what we’re really interested in, right?

Episode 11 hammers home the idea that Dexter is finally looking towards the future. A future with Hanna. Growing old together and having a real life. A nice flash-forward gives you a brief hint what that might look like. But a dream is just a dream when outside forces, in the form of Deb’s venom towards Hanna and Laguerta’s insistence that Dexter’s the BHB, conspire to ruin the fantasy.

An event occurs that makes Dexter examine two of the most important people in his life: Can Hanna really be trusted? Or has Deb’s mental state gone off the rails in her determination to arrest Hanna?

Matthews has his promised chat with Dexter. Will he interrogate Dexter hoping for a major slip-up? Will he warn his old family friend that Laguerta’s on his tail? Or will Dexter use his mastery of excuses to get out of another jam? Needless to say that by the end of the conversation, Dexter knows that Laguerta’s still on the case (and getting VERY close to the truth), and it’s a development that he shares with Deb with interesting results.

Another plot development involves an old “friend” of Dexter’s who has just made parole. Someone who Dexter hasn’t seen since he was a child sitting in that puddle of blood many years ago. The temptation to “reunite” is too strong to ignore, a fact not lost on a very supportive Hanna. But will Dexter find closure or will it be his undoing?

All of these plot threads are tied together in one form or another. As we’re getting down to the final few episodes, the personal stakes have never been higher.

But I will leave you with one juicy tid-bit....

This line of dialogue is from the BIGGEST SPOILER of the episode. It’s either said by Dexter, Deb or Hanna. You may be able to easily figure out who said it, but it’s the context of the quote that matters the most (and it might not be exactly what you think). I won’t confirm anything, so consider this a fun little game that you’ll have to wait until Sunday to see how you did. I’m sure it’ll make for some fun theories and reading. And the quote is...

“You should’ve killed me”.

Enjoy the episode Dexheads! The final endgame is almost here! Let the excitement, joy, anger, and theories on the conclusion begin!

Until the next time!

J

  1. The only possibilities I can come up with the "You should have killed me" line are as follows:

Hannah - to Dex referring to episode 6
Dex - to Deb referring to the premiere
Dex - to the guy who was involved with the murder of his murder
Deb - to Hannah referring to (if this is what happens) Hannah being the one to cause Deb's car crash
Deb - to Dex referring to the Season 1 finale

  2. Hannah to Dex referring to episode 6. There is no other alternative.

  3. Have you considered Doakes?

Did you see the Season Finale Episode Title?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Do you mean like Dex saying it to Doakes? I know the season finale title was entitled "Surprise Motherf***er". That would be very interesting and unbelievably awesome. It'd be even cooler if Doakes turned out alive, but that would be a bit of a stretch.

I am kind of hoping for the Deb saying it to Hannah referring to Hannah trying to kill her, then Deb kills her. But Doakes would be a second choice. At any rate, I am very excited for the last 2 episodes.

Also, I've been curious for a while, what's the policy on swearing on the site? I've waffled between blocking at in this reply and letting some slip by, curious what your stance on it is.

  5. Swearing is ok in context :)

Yes, I didn't read the first part so you're right it can't be Doakes.

My guess then would be Hannah to Dex although it seems fairly obvious and I got the impression for the reviewer that it is a big twist like scenario.

have to wait I guess unless someone leaks it :)

    ReplyDelete
  6. Right, that first line kind of eliminates Doakes from the running, unless he appears after Dex kills that guy involved in his mother's murder as a new figure to replace Harry (like Brian did last season).

It'd be nice if it got leaked, I know I'd enjoy it more if I'd watch without spoilers, but I'm weak of will.

And thanks for the confirmation on the swearing. Ok in context, and obviously don't go about writing sentences only comprised of swear words. Ha.

  7. I shouldn't have read this. Now Sunday seems even more far. There are so many possiblities of "You should have killed me".I don't care which one of them are except for two.Debra to Hannah and Hannah to Dexter.
    Damn It.I just can't wait!

  8. Actually I believe this statement of Dexter to the man who slaughtered his mother in a jealous rage.

  9. Here's my theory:

Dexter is stressed and confides in Hannah about Laguerta being on his tail, etc. Hannah is stressed that Deb is closer to finding an excuse to rescue her. So she cuts a deal with Laguerta to give her information on Dexter in order for immunity. And she says that line at the very end of the episode when Laguerta turns up to confront Dexter.

  10. Gotta be Doakes. "Surprise, motherfucker".

    ReplyDelete
  11. Oh, so this is when we will see Harrison as a 17 yr old...Ahhhh....☺.....

    ReplyDelete
  12. I do believe that, too, although that wouldn't be a twist to anyone who's seen the promo.

  13. well, it got leaked out, kind of -> Spoilers!http://film-book.com/tv-review-dexter-season-7-episode-11-do-you-see-what-i-see/

  14. hey shatteredone, according to imdb james doakes will be in the season finale:))

    ReplyDelete
  15. I could see that happening, especially with her history with Wayne. If Hannah does get arrested, she might be able to avoid jail time in exchange for turning Dexter in. If that happens, the fan base will go crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Thanks for the link. Wasn't overly spoiler, but did allude to quite a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Considering IMDb has been wrong with future episodes in the past, I always take IMDb with a grain of salt. Still, if it happens, nice!

    ReplyDelete
  18. yeah but if it does happen i hope that maybe doakes will be the big bad in season 8 hunting for dexter in the final season what do you think about that?

    ReplyDelete
  19. That'd be very tricky to pull off, mainly because of why would Doakes remain in hiding for so long. I'd probably go for it as I always felt Doakes was killed off too early, but I feel if they were going to play the "Doakes is alive card", then they would/should have done it earlier.

    ReplyDelete
  20. "You should've killed me" probably not Debs line. She'd say "You should've fucking killed me"
A fun little game? I call it torture.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Doakes? He's supposed to be dead. I mean they did identify what was left of him, didn't they.
And if he wasn't dead, why didn't he came back sooner?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Agree that "Surprise motherfucker" is exactly what Doakes would say. But he IS
dead. Isn't he? I mean they did identify what was left of him?
"You should've killed me" probably not Debs line. She'd say "You should've
fucking killed me" Our sweet little Deb has a venomous tongue.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh, if I'd be Hannah I wouldn’t even try to betray Dex. If Hannah is thinking of helping
LaGuerta, Deb and Dex my go on a killing spree together. LaGuerta, Matthews, Hannah, … THAT would be an end I'd love to see.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Possible.
But I think Cliff is right. It wouldn't be a surprise. It would be something you'd expect Dex to
say to the bastard that killed his mother.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ya he is, most likely (I'd go with 99.5% sure) he's dead. If he does return, I think it'd be similar to Brian's appearance to Dex last season, or he'd show up as a ghost for LaGuerta. Any form of Doakes would be welcome on the show.

And as for the line... quite astute observation. Although I think there would at least be 1 to 2 more swear words in there. Ha, love Deb's swearing.

  26. here is a link

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2235994/

    ReplyDelete
  27. i understand it is a very little chance for the character to return in season 8 but if it happend it would be a thrilling final season of dexter :)))

    ReplyDelete
  28. This is not Supernatural, Buffy or Vampire Diaries. No ghosts.

Harry sort of represents Dexters conscience. His rational thinking that is keeping him under control. Harry is always telling him to stop a known killer, to be sure he doesn't kill anyone innocent, … Brian represents Dexters dark side. His urge to kill, no matter who the victim is. He's telling him to kill, not to care, that this is who he really is.

They are parts of his personality. So … What part of his personality would Doakes represent? Well. He probably IS dead. So, if he doesn't show up in flash backs, and definitely not as a ghost, what else is there? Just a voice inside Dexters head. Guilt? It wasn't Dex who killed him. And I think guild would be represented by Rita or maybe his mother. Fear? He's afraid to be caught. Since Doakes no one was ever so close on him. Lundy came close, but never revealed Dex as BHB. Doakes did.

Ah. Debs swearing. You're right. She'd probably said: "You fucker/fucking bitch/fucking son of a bitch should've fucking killed me" Love her swearing too :)

  29. If Doakes would live it would be a good end of S3, if he'd came back to hunt Dex.
Even, if he's alive he couldn't be the big bad of S8. He knows who Dex is. If Doakes would be after him, Dex would finish him off before he could do anything. They couldn't possibly make 12 eps about the confrontation Doakes/Dex.
I think Doakes appears in flash backs.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Like Buffy S7 when they brought up all characters from the previous season in one way or another?

    ReplyDelete
  31. yeah but i dont think they can have vampires on dexter ha lol:)) since dexter isnt a supernatural series like buffy, angel, and supernatural

    ReplyDelete
  32. yeah maybe youre right but i did think the tought was amusing:)) lol

    ReplyDelete
  33. Of course I know that. That's what I said an hour ago when someone suggested Doakes returning as ghost. But you know what I meant. All the characters returned in one form or another. Some returned as The First (like Glory or Dru), or ghosts/visions (when Dawn saw Joyce), or they came back as guest stars (like Faith or Angel).

But back to Dexter. Since there is no coming back from the dead here, who could be brought back? Most guest actors die. Who could be back? Lumen and the kids? Who else is there?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Sure it would be. He was a good actor.

Maybe he does come back. In flash backs.

    ReplyDelete
  35. yeah i know you probaly knew that i was just joking with you? and oh yeah i didnt see that comment that you wrote we both had the examples of supernatural and buffy that was funny since i didnt see that comment before now wen you said it.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Right. I mentioned in another comment about how if they were going to play the "Doakes is alive card" it would've been done earlier. At this point, I'm expecting more of an apparition or whatever you want to call it like Harry is to Dexter. Someone who isn't really there but Dexter talks to him as though he is, his conscience or something. That's what I expect Doakes to return as.

    ReplyDelete
  37. hey shatteredone or anyone else have you ever seen the tv shows one tree hill(the cw) or life (nbc)?

    ReplyDelete
  38. No. I watch A LOT of tv, but I have not see One Tree Hill or Life. Although I have seen parts of OTH because of Sophia Bush.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh I completely agree, and I was just using the word ghost because I couldn't think of a better word at the time of that comment to accurately describe what Harry is to Dexter. I understand Harry represents the rational side of his mind thinking and it presents Harry to Dexter because Harry was the one who gave him the code and was the one who seemed to have all the answers. And then, as you said, Brian represented Dexter's dark side.

I would agree that guilt might fall into a reason he would see Doakes. Something along the lines of Doakes was undeserving of the end that he met. But then again, as you said (you have so many good points), Rita would represent guilt far more. Perhaps Doakes appears because he needs to try to analyze this from the point of view of someone who worked in the police department who was after Dexter.

Perfect! I could hear what you wrote in Deb's voice. Oh Debra...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yeah, I've read that one too and agree.

Yeah, I know you read my comment about Doakes being a voice in Dex head. And it's possible. But what would he represent?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Doakes could represent his guilt. He died because of Dex (he locked him up), but he was innocent. Sort of. That is why Dex didn't finish him off himself.

But on the other side: Dex never felt any guilt. Except that he puts Deb in danger cause she knows about him, maybe. Still: why not sooner?

It could be fear. Since Doakes no one ever came that close to him like LGuerta. So Doakes could appear to him and telling him, that he's going to end in prison, that his son will be ashamed of him, his sister will end up in prison too, …

Someone on the police who is after him? Could be.

I just hope Deb survives this season. Can't imagine S8 without her.

Hope, this idiots are already working on S8. I HATE to wait!
