Definitely Modern Family. It started to get on my nerves and I recently stopped watching. I think it's just a series of sketches and they're not funny anymore.
The Walking Dead is hands down the most pretentious show on tv ever ( and horrendously overrated, btw). If you look the word 'pretentious' up in a dictionary, I bet, there's gotta be some reference for TWD.
Only a moron would consider a zombie / drama show pretentious. And only a frustrated network TV watcher would consider TWD overrated. Get over yourself you pathetic abortion.
I am not sure I would describe any of the shows as pretentious.. although i do not watch Modern Family or The Office so they might be, I jsut don;t know about them.
Tough question, but I feel that when it comes to 'pretentious', Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck, Glee, American Horror Story, The New Normal) should be mentioned.
I've seen 28 episodes of Glee before I couldn't take it anymore (even though season 1 had genuinely good moments/episodes). The big deal they make of their guests, the 'regionals' thing that they have to make it seem like the story goes somewhere (Community couldn't have better emphasized how this supposedly important thing is stupid : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQtVmGO3cu4 ), even having an ensemble of tokens, that doesn't feel true and honest to me.
As for The New Normal, I've just seen the pilot but some moments and cast members were great but overall it wasn't really good, some parts of it were not above the level required for a PSA, and even the title is preachy as hell (subtle much?).
I'm still watching American Horror Story (I'm waiting for Asylum to be over before I start watching it) and season 1, while enjoyable, was a definite case of pretentiousness, but maybe it does add a little campy charm to the show.
I somehow agree with you, that's why I voted for TWD, but I still think your overreacting. This show's indeed very overrated, but not as you claim. Just for the reason the sometimes I'm done watching a boring episode and everyone is overly enthusiastic about it
I agree that Walking Dead is very over-rated, I found the first two seasons really slow-going... I lost count of how many episodes in season 2 it took before the plot actually moved forward. I still would not describe it as pretentious though.
I think people are confusing overrated with pretentious, I wouldn't call any of these shows pretentious. Now something like Newsroom I definitely would.
I've watched 4 shows on the list and the only one I would call pretentious is Battlestar Galactica. That would be for the final episode which they used to try to teach all of humanity a lesson. Before it aired on tv, they screened it for the United Nations and turned it into a big event all about the BSG and stopping human rights abuses around the world. They publicized it all to hell about how the BSG finale was going to somehow bring about world peace and happiness among all the peoples of the world. It is hard to get more pretentious than that.
I went with Modern Family, not as good as it used to be yet it still thinks it is (Phil carries the show). The Office would probably be next, then probably 30 Rock. But I'm curious why there isn't an Other option.
My definition of pretentious is a show that tries to be more than it is. Lost didn't need to have an afterlife to it because it was just about people trapped on an island. Battlestar Galactica didn't need to make a humanity statement or whatever it was trying to accomplish because it was just about a group of survivors escaping from some screwed up robots. The Office doesn't need to get so creative with their jokes because it's just about a bunch of people working in an office.
For me it there are two,Friends and Two and a half men. After hearing what a genius and how good C.Sheen was ,what an incredible show it was i checked it out.Sure,he can be funny, but people imo made way to much of it....personal preference
Pretentiousness is such a subjective concept. I only watch BB, MF, and TWD from the above poll. I only watched the first season of Lost and 30 Rock. Sometimes I don't think that the show itself is pretentious, but the fans are. Like they think their show is the best because "they think" it's so ~clever and the ship is so ~awesome. Just my two cents. Not voting.
Just because you don't personally like the show doesn't mean that the show is actually overrated. Overrated would mean that more people dislike the show than like it. It would mean that a small minority of people were being really loud with their love for the show. Have you seen the ratings this season? People love TWD. It is not overrated.
Lost thought it was just so important...We will be your greatest show of all time, and you have to like us no matter what we do. Signed, Damon Lindelof.
I don't think any of these shows are, necessarily. But if I had to pick then I agree, totally. The show has changed what it used to be. I don't know what Breaking Bad is doing on the list though. It's one of the most unpretentious shows.
Have not properly watched any of these shows, I watched 4 episodes of Modern Family and did not enjoy it. I've seen some of The Office and didn't care for it either. Voted Modern Family overall.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteTotally agree. Never understood why it's so popular.

ReplyDeleteI'm really surprised by the huge amounts of votes Lost got. Anyway, I voted The Walking Dead.

ReplyDeleteThe Walking Dead is not overrated now. Season 3 has been amazing and much better than season 2.
ReplyDeleteThe most overrated shows include Castle, OUAT, True Blood, Supernatural, Revolution
ReplyDeleteI don't think Pretentious is the right word, and i do not watch 4 of the shows,so no vote here.
ReplyDeleteMaybe adding the option 'Other' should have been added? Of course that's only my opinion. :)
