First of all, thank you so much for the huge response that I received to my last article. I’ve read every single one of your comments (more than once) and I’m very grateful for them, especially since I’ve found myself eager to watch at least several of the recommended shows. So really BIG THANKS! Now, I have to admit that until not so long ago, I haven’t even watched too many comedies, so here I’m even more interested to read about your favorites, but first, there goes my list, in alphabetical order. Enjoy reading!
1. Community (2009-)
What’s it all about? Seven unusual people, including a suspended lawyer without degree, former anarchist, a pop-culture-obsessed film student, a single mother, compulsive over-achiever, former high school star quarterback and a millionaire with a tendency to bigotry, all studying at Greendale Community College, finds themselves joining a fictional study group, which unexpectedly becomes very real. Despite their many differences and flaws they form a close friendship and get together in all sorts of crazy and hillarious situations, often involving their unique(!) and very supportive Dean, and incompetent, unhinged Spanish teacher "Señor" Chang.
Why is it worth watching? It has to be THE most creative comedy on TV! With it’s brillant cast and creator Dan Harmon, things like meta-humor, parodies, animated episodes, Paintball Wars and Pillows&Blankets battles and so much more, fun is pretty much guaranteed!
Who’s playing? Fantastic ensemble: Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Ken Jeong, Jim Rash and Chevy Chase.
Memorable quotes:
“Six seasons and a movie!”
“Just so you know Jeff, you're now creating six different timelines.”
“You've just stopped being a study group. You have become something unstoppable. I hereby pronounce you a Community”
2. Friends (1994-2004)
What’s it all about? Story about six friends, Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler and Ross living in New York. It’s the show about their friendship, their love life, past, present, plans for the future, mistakes, successes, competitions, changes, weddings, divorces and hundreds of funny situations that they get into every single episode.
Why is it worth watching? Honestly, it’s the classic and it’s hard to imagine you’ve never seen it. But if you haven’t, then you’re in for a treat! Definitely my favorite TV comedy of all time! That says it all!
Who’s playing? Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, David Schiwimmer and very impressive list of guest stars, including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Paul Rudd, Reese Witherspoon, Christina Applegate, Julia Roberts, etc.
Memorable quotes:
“We were on a break”
“How you doin’?”
“Oh…my…God!”
“I'm not so good with the advice... Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?”
3. Go On (2012-)
What’s it all about? It’s starting as a story of Ryan King, sportscaster, who’s trying to move on from the loss of his wife and joins (reluctantly) a grief support group. Even though it’s members (and leader with limited training) seem to be the strangest people he’s ever met, they soon turn out to be just the ones he needs. Balancing between happiness and pain, moving on and remembering, they’re slowly finding a way to go on with their lives, together.
Why is it worth watching? It’s my favorite new comedy of this fall! It does a great job with happy-sad aura, connecting funny bits with lovely, sweet moments usually at the end of each episode and has excellent cast, with Matthew Perry as it’s star!
Who’s playing? Matthew Perry, Laura Benanti, Julie White, Suzy Nakamura, Tyler James Williams, Brett Gelman, John Cho and more
Memorable quotes:
“She’s the only girl that I ever loved”
“It’s 1:23 am and there’s no one to call”
“They showed up in my house and told me they were coming here. I just want to say, from the bottom of my heart, that I took a prescription sleeping pill and I have no idea what’s happening here.”
4. How I Met Your Mother (2005-)
What’s it all about? In year 2030, Ted Mosby tells his kids the story about the events that led to his meeting with their mother. Set in New York (often in bar called MacLaren’s ), it’s the story about Ted, Marshall Eriksen, Lily Aldrin, Robin Scherbatsky and Barney Stinson, their friendship, love matters and all the crazy, stupid, romantic and fantastic stuff that come in between.
Why is it worth watching? The characters are what will make you fall in love with this show. The strangest connections, the funniest situations and great love stories will make you stay with it. It’s truly brilliant and you just can’t miss the show’s legen… wait for it… dary breakout character Barney.
Who’s playing? Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Alyson Hannigan and Neil Patrick Harris.
Memorable quotes:
“Suit up!”
“It's gonna be legen... wait for it... dary!“
“Haaaaave you met Ted?”
“Challenge accepted!”
5. Parks and Recreation (2009-)
What’s it all about? It’s the story of Leslie Knope, a perky, waffles-loving, mid-level bureaucrat in the parks department of Pawnee, a fictional town in Indiana. She’s very ambitious and committed to the belief that government should provide a service for its people, and regularly goes above and beyond for the benefits of Pawnee's residents. The story follows Leslie and her friends and colleagues at their jobs and shows many, many funny aspects of their lives.
Why is it worth watching? Have to admit I haven’t seen the beginning of the series, I’ve started watching it late in S2, but it’s growing on me with each season. And the current one is just fantastic, my favorite without a doubt. The show’s not only brilliantly balanced, but it has some of the best characters and comedy performances on TV right now! Just watch and see!
Who’s playing? Remarkable Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, Paul Schneider, Chris Pratt, Adam Scott, Rob Lowe, Jim O'Heir and Retta
Memorable quotes:
“We need to remember what’s important in life: friends, waffles, and work. Or waffles, friends, work. Doesn’t matter. But work is third.”
“The less I know about other people’s affairs, the happier I am. I’m not interested in caring about people. I once worked with a guy for three years and never learned his name. Best friend I ever had. We still never talk sometimes.”
“I'm not afraid of cops. I have no reason to be I never break any laws, ever, because I'm deathly afraid of cops.”
Honorable Mentions: New Girl, Modern Family and Happy Endings

You forgot TBBT.
ReplyDeleteMy all-time favorite is no doubt Arrested Development, which is a must-watch for everyone! I only caught up with it recently and now's the perfect time as well since its fourth season will start in April :P
ReplyDeleteMarried... With Children obviously :) and The King of Queens
ReplyDeleteGreat choice but I admite that HIMYM disappointing me last season, so I decide to stop watching this show... My favorites are Two And A Half Men (so good! And Ash is really good. Indeed, Charlie Sheen is a good actor but I really like Ashton since 'The Butterfly Effect') and Happy Endings (closest to Friends)
ReplyDeleteI've only watched some of the episodes but I agree, it's pretty good;)
ReplyDeleteNew Girl, Modern Family and HIMYM are getting so lame and not funny at all. Parks and Community are still the best comedy on the air at the moment (until Arrested Development returns).
ReplyDeleteGreat list, I am fans of all of these HIMYM and Community are my two current faves and Friends was and still is my favorite comedy of all time.
ReplyDeleteLove Community and I do have a soft spot for HIMYM. But Friends... ugh, hate that show. Never funny.
ReplyDeleteI've never been able to get into 'Friends' either, even though I do recognize that some of the current good comedy shows probably wouldn't have existed if it weren't for Friends.
ReplyDeleteRed Dwarf, Father Ted, Blackadder!
ReplyDelete'Chuck'!
ReplyDeleteLove love love community. One of the smartest and funniest shows I've ever seen.
ReplyDeleteAlso love friends. I can watch any episode over and over and never get sick of it
Used to love how I met your mother but I just kinda stopped watching. First few seasons were great.
As for other comedies, I don't watch that many actually but I can say that psych is my favourite. Just great humor, especially in the first few seasons. Quirky and cute And really laugh out loud funny. I can watch it over and over
Community and Parks & Rec certainly are the best comedies on broadcast network TV, alongside Raising Hope, which I think is getting criminally low attention from the critics despite its awesomeness, weirdness, perfect cast... I don't get why it isn't a critics' darling like the two other gems previously mentioned.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, this fall's only great new comedy is Go On. The supporting cast is truly great, it's not just about Matthew Perry, the subject matter (a support group) is original for a comedy, and it works. It reminds me of a 'light' Community. I just hope NBC won't make the writers go for a "will they / won't they" relationship between Ryan and Lauren — shippers, I fucking hate that.
Friends was great overall, HIMYM used to be great, but in a top 5 I would include comedies like Arrested Development, Curb your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld, It's Always Sunny Sunny in Philadelphia, Bored to Death, Eastbound and Down, Party Down, Better Off Ted, etc.
I watched Red Dwarf once.I thought i was going to be watching a science type series.. I found it to be ridiculous, and not funny at all..But then again it was only one episode, and i was expecting it to be something else!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite shows THIS season:
ReplyDeleteRaising Hope, Season 3
New Girl, Season 2
The Neighbors, Season 1 (I don't know why people don't like this show, it is very original)
Modern Family, Season 4
30 Rock, Season 7
Parks and Recreation, Season 5
Episodes, Season 2
and the all-time favorite Arrested Development!
I love TBBT. HIMYM and Go on are great. Also New Girl, 30 Rock. And my 2nd personal favorite (right after TBBT): Scrubs:)
ReplyDeleteFriends has to be my all time favorite sitcom.
ReplyDeleteHow I Met Your Mother is my favorite right now.
Because it's awful.
ReplyDeleteMy top 5 would be:
ReplyDelete1. Community - it's such a special show and I have fallen in love with it and the characters. It's the most perfect show and is streets ahead of the other comedies. Community is a masterpiece.
2. Arrested Development - Just awesome. So smart and one of the funniest comedies ever. Perfect cast too.
3. New Girl - love the characters and it's hilarious.
4. HIMYM - used to be my favourite show but sadly the standard has gone way down but it's done well for 8 seasons.
5. The Office - Like HIMYM, standard has gone way down but the earlier seasons are gold.
I love Parks and Rec and Happy Endings too! I was obsessed with Friends when it was on - but if it was on now I probably wouldn't watch it.
Friends is the best comedy of all time, in my opinion. HIMYM is my current favorite, and it likely wouldn't exist without Friends. Plus, Friends is one of the few shows to be consistently funny throughout the entire show, 10 whole seasons. Even with HIMYM, I have been consistently pleased with the show but also disappointed on some fronts as well. I don't feel like there's a "bad" episode of Friends at all.
ReplyDelete..go.on..really you are blind
ReplyDelete..favorites friends and how i meet your mother
ReplyDeleteI'm not that much into comedy but I do love Community and Parks and Recs. I watched Friends but it never really appealed to me same for HIMYM. Other comedys currently on air I watch Raising Hope ( underrated imo), TAAHM, TO, MF and IASIP.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this!
ReplyDeleteOther than "Community" and "Parks and Recreation" which you've mentioned, my favorite comedies are (in no particular order): "Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23", "Happy Endings", "Raising Hope", "The Middle", "Modern Family", "Cougar Town" and "Up All Night". As for cable offerings, I enjoy "Curb Your Enthusiasm", "Episodes", "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and "The Big C".
Oh, and "Arrested Development" is seriously a classic. But I haven't watched it in ages.
My top 5
ReplyDelete01. Scrubs
02. 2 Broke Girls
03. How I Met Your Mother
04. Friends
05. Modern Family
Special Mentions - Happy Endings, Apartment 23, The New Normal
Current
ReplyDeleteMelissa and Joey
New Girl
TAAHM
Past
Friends
Malcolm In the Middle
That 70's Show
Home Improvement
Boy meets World
Sister Sister
Will & Grace
Friends
ReplyDeleteRaising Hope
Happy Endings
Awkward
The Middle
1) Friends
ReplyDelete2) HIMYM
3) 2 Broke Girls
4) New Girl
5) Go on
I almost completely agree with this list! Parks & Rec would be 2nd for me on a Top 5. And while I do really like Go On, I feel there are other great comedies that have been made that deserve that spot. Happy Endings would be one, I know a lot of people enjoyed Arrested Development, but I wasn't a huge fan, perhaps because of the "It's the best show ever" claims I heard for years before I saw it. Psych would be another that could go on there.
ReplyDeleteMy Top 5 would be this order: Community, Parks & Rec, Psych, HIMYM, Friends. With an honorable mention to Happy Endings.
Ah Boy Meets World, loved that show, great show to grow up watching. Mr. Feeny!
ReplyDeleteI used to be like you, claiming TBBT was awful. But I've seen a few episodes here and there and can admit that it made me laugh at times. The problem with it is the overused laugh track, the generic comedy, and the characters are kind of a-holes.
ReplyDeleteNice choices. I've only seen a few eps of HIMYM (Slapsgiving is a fave) and the ones that I've watched are hilarious, but I've heard that the recent seasons aren't as good as the early ones, something that can definitely be said as well about The Office (US) (the first 4-5 seasons were fantastic, the recent, not so much). PRex was inspired from The Office, and I watched the first season because of that and initially wasn't impressed with the S1 and gave it up but a couple of seasons and after reading how great the show had become, decided to give it another go and have to say that from S2 to the most recent ep, there is hardly a weak episode in the series. I've also recently discovered the awesomeness of Arrested Development and am looking forward to it's return. I also love Friends, Community (sheer creative brilliance), Modern Family, and would place them in my top 5. Other current comedies I enjoy are: Cougar Town, Happy Endings, and Go On. I've watched a few eps of TBBT, 2&half men, New Girl, and B in 23, and they were ok but aren't my kind of show to follow with any kind of regularity. I've heard good things about The Middle and Raising Hope, but just have never had the time to get around to watching.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite past sitcoms since most people are familiar with the current crop....
ReplyDelete1. Arrested Development
2. Scrubs
3. Better Off Ted
4. Newsradio
5. Spin City
Honorable Mention and already Hall of Fame:
Taxi, Cheers, Frasier, Married with Children, and Seinfeld.
Ouch, of these 5 shows I've only seen Friends, and not even half of the series I think. Not really a comedy person at all, though I must admit I am a giant fan of Happy Endings and I'd recommend it to everyone!
ReplyDeleteI love Psych! I just wasn't sure whether it's the right category for it since it's detective comedy-drama;)
ReplyDeleteHIMYM, Friends, Community: 3 of my favorite sitcoms. I did not like Go On though. I did not really find it funny.
ReplyDeleteMy favorites... The biggest one that's not on the list is Seinfeld. I think it's one of the best shows ever. Other than that, I like Modern Family, Californication, Episodes, Big Bang Theory, South Park...
ReplyDeleteMine:
ReplyDelete1. How I Met Your Mother
2. The Big Bang Theory
3. Hot in Cleveland
4. Community
5. Happy Endings
I love 2 broke girls! So glad someone mentioned it.It the sitcom I watch anymore.I used to watch BBT & Raising Hope but after season three BBT didn't seem as good and I loved Raising Hope til the end of season one when IMO it went downhill.
ReplyDeleteYES! Parks and Rec is my favorite! Followed by-
ReplyDeleteGo On
Scrubs
Dharma and Greg
Suburgatory
Community
and The neightboors !
Love them all!
Forgot Raising Hope!
ReplyDeletePartners
ReplyDeleteBen And Kate
The New Normal
New Girl
The Mindy Project
Modern Family
Suburgatory
30 Rock
The Big Bang Theory
That's true, there are more drama elements in Psych than other comedies, but still enjoyable, and I'm glad that it was considered.
ReplyDeleteI watched every episode up until the current season. I can't believe it took me that long to realise how bad it was.
ReplyDelete1) TBBT
ReplyDelete2) HIMYM
3) 2 Broke Girls
4) New Girl
5) Comunity
I have never seen the entire Friends series (I know, I have to do it), so I cannot include it. My list would be, without any order: Community, Cougar Town, New Girl, Modern Family, Big Bang Theory, Happy Endings and How I Met Your Mother. Honorable mentions for the young Go On and Apartment 23
ReplyDeleteBetter Off Ted was so good. Every time I hear of some revolutionary new idea I think "Jabberwocky".
ReplyDelete1) 30 Rock
ReplyDelete2) The Big Bang Theory
3) Modern Family
4) Hot In Cleveland
5) Parks & Rec
1) Friends
ReplyDelete2)How i met your mother
3)The Big bang Theory
4)Two and a half men
5)and that's it.. i just realized i don't have a fifth favorite comedy! I'm planning on start watching Modern Family though.
Here are my favorites, in no particular order:
ReplyDelete1) Community
2) Parks and Rec
3) Friends
4) HIMYM
5) The Big Bang Theory
Friends has to be the greatest sitcom that ever was. Yeah, there was a lot of good stuff that paved the way, and a lot of great stuff followed, but Friends was a show that you felt like you were a part of. You felt like they were YOUR friends, too, and there was never a dull moment or a bad episode... well, not one that I can think of. And the cast was truly spectacular. It'll be my favorite for years to come.
Good list.
ReplyDeleteyou should check out arrested development and psych.
AD is as perfect a comedy can get, hilarious throughout, you'll probably have to watch it two times over to get all the hidden jokes in each ep. i know i did. lol
psych is an offbeat, laugh out loud comedy, the cast is fantastic, its renewed for its 7th season.
They're both available on netflix.
What about Everybody Loves Raymond? In my opinion one of the all time great comedies.
ReplyDeleteyeah exactly, take a look at my collection http://www.0scene.com
