    Yes they do. It's not an absolute necessity though. On TVD, consuming blood allows a vampire's body to function normally for the most part. They eat, drink, breathe, sleep etc. They don't necessarily need to do any of that to live (they only need the blood) but they can nonetheless.

    Come to think of it, for a show that's based on the horror/sci-fi genre I'm surprised it took over three seasons to get a standard issue shower scene like this. Maybe I should give TVD credit for avoiding the obvious for so long.

    I guess they don't need to breathe to get oxygen but its still a reflex of their body. Also they are inconsistent with that like choking a vampire... I'm sure its painful but they also seem to be out of air.
