Fox is scaling back its commitment to a new comedy series from the creators of How I Met Your Mother.
Midseason sitcom The Goodwin Games has halted production after the network reduced its order from 13 episodes to 7. The show is from HIMYM‘s Craig Thomas and Carter Bays along with Chris Harris, and stars Scott Foley and Becki Newton as estranged siblings who return home after their father’s death and learn his $23 million inheritance can only be obtained by playing an elaborate game of Trivial Pursuit.
A Fox spokesperson attributed the change to the network’s abundance of half-hour comedy material this season, having previously ordered 24 episodes of Raising Hope, New Girl and The Mindy Project, along with 18 episodes of Ben and Kate. The network still plans to air the seven The Goodwin Games episodes sometime this spring.

Never a good sign! Becky Newton doesn't really have luck on her side when it comes to new shows!
ReplyDeleteThey can make any excuse they like, scaling back production is never a good sign for a show!
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad. I'm not the biggest fan of HIMYM anymore, but I was really looking forward to see what Bays and Thomas could do with a single-camera comedy, HIMYM having always been closer to this format than any other multi-camera sitcom ever dared to be (e.g : stories told from different points of view, linearity often interrupted by cutaways, etc).
ReplyDeleteShe really doesn't, sadly. This show is doomed before it even aired, much like the two comedies NBC launched last spring, which everyone knew wouldn't make the cut come May ("Bent" and "Best Friends Forever").
ReplyDeleteSomeone on another forum said the pilot (and the reshot pilot) was strong but the rest of the episodes wasn't.
ReplyDeletethats basially a cancellation and a burn off.
ReplyDeleteBen and Kate and The Mindy Project do not deserve those season orders. Raising Hope i can understand, because of Syndication needs. Ben and Kate is doing terrible, and with the New Girl lead in, The Mindy Project has a very bad viewer retention. They should have cancelled one of the two and gave The Goodwin Games, which has been said to be great by early viewers, to premiere early midseason.
ReplyDeleteThey did what?
ReplyDeleteI am a huge fan of HIMYM and Bays and Thomas's work. I also like Becki, and was looking forward to this show after her exit from HIMYM. I have been interested in this show from the beginning but the chances of this show getting a full season pick up in 2013 aren't looking good. First the keep changing they main cast and now this. They might as well just cancel it right now.
As soon as a network claims they plan to air the eps it means they probably won't or will burn them off during the summer.
ReplyDeleteThe show promos I saw did not grab me so I won't miss it if they burn it off honestly. I like some of the cast and creative team, but it just did not seem promising at all to me.
ReplyDeleteThen again I have no clue as to why/ how the other sitcoms got renewed, so I just do not understand FOX logic.
Last time I remember FOX doing this it was with New Amsterdam and the show was doomed.
ReplyDeleteI still miss New Amsterdam, tbh.
ReplyDeleteThis really sucks. I was looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteYou and me both. I really liked that show.
