Supernatural - 8.06 - Southern Comfort - Podcast

Nov 12, 2012

For the first time Lilith and I gave the episode the same grade and it wasn't favorable. For Lilith it was a typical Adam Glass meh affair. For me, it was a major disappointment since nothing was resolved and there was no forward movement on anything. Basically neither of us are fond of season 8 so far and that's wearing on us both now and you can tell in this podcast. Here's hoping you liked it better than we did. Feel free to sound off in the comments below.

  1. Fair warning - I am negative from beginning to end on this podcast both about this episode and this season as a whole. I hated Garth more than I ever have. I hated the fact that there was no forward movement on the brother rift or actually anything. Glad many of you enjoyed this episode and are enjoying season 8. I'm just not one of them.

  2. If it is any consolation, this week looks like as big a bust as any so far this year. When we used to write in teams we had to keep the lines in control. Now we've got Cas, Dean and Benny on one side and Sam, Kevin and Ms. Tran on the other.

Wondering if Cas left Jimmy, allowing him to pass through and then did something naughty in Purgatory that got him called in front of the principal.

Beers to Riot getting possessed and eating Amelia.

  3. I listened to the podcast straight from Spreaker yesterday ( well, yesterday for me, anyway!) and I really enjoyed it, as always.

I like how you and Lilith give your viewpoints in a such a friendly way, at times differing, but due to the OOC Sam/Dean problems and other things, mostly on a common ground for now.

I like how it's divided up into various phases. It's easier to folow that way.
However I missed the first impressions moment this week, which is one of my favourites. Anyway great job as usual.

  4. I won't be listening to the pod cast if is negative. I like season 8 so far. I actually enjoyed Garth. As I recall every time since season 1 it took a long time for brother rifts to get anywhere. I am enjoying the wait. They may not be listening, but they are sure talking. That's new.

  5. Sorry about that, the podcast was running a bit long, so I posted that segment on tumblr instead. I've been trying to get the podcast down to 75 minutes. If you want to hear it, I'll send you the link. Let me know.

  6. I'd like that. Thanks.

I can imagine that it would be difficult to keep everything inside a certain time limit especialy when two girls chat about their favourite shows. :)

  7. After watching 806 episode, I watched season 4, my favorite episode - Metamorphosis. I really love that episode and Dean and Sam were NOT OOC back then and they behaved like brothers. "Sam is still a mathlete" - Dean. And I really loved the brother fight in that episode and the fight had some meaning and pushed the story forward back then. I am always a fan of Winchester brother fights, as long as they are realistic. The fight in 806 episode is not exactly realistic, especially because Dean brought the "Sam not looking for Dean" aspect into the fight. Other wise its a good episode for me and certainly better than many previous Adam Glass episodes. But I want Sam and Dean's relationship or tension between the brothers to synchronize with the myth-arc of the season, just like it did in the first six seasons.
And I also liked the monster in this episode. I usually like the monsters, that tampers with psychology of the victims, just like "Yellow Fever".
What I can understand so far is, writers have run out of ideas and in order to bring some brotherly moments on the show, they are twisting the characters, which is the biggest blunder of season 8, IMO. I don't understand why Sam didn't search for Dean and I still don't understand why Dean forgave Castiel and trusted Benny. But I can get adjusted to these things with time, but all this is OOC.
Purgatory as of now is NOT bad, but I expected a lot more from it. As in the podcast above, I loved the action scenes in purgatory and I also like Benny, but purgatory interactions between the characters are just a meh for me, unlike what many other fans claim. I liked Pocket universe on Fringe hundred times more than that of purgatory.

I don't really hate Garth as much as said above in the audio. I started liking him when he said "Dean, he is your brother. You protected him all your life".
On a whole I give this episode 6.5/10.

And I am watching the show as of now only for MoTWs. IMO, they are much improved than the last season and I really liked Dean trying to convince Sam to get back into hunting. I need to watch more of myth-arc to comment on it.

  8. You mean 87 minutes was too long??? Too bad you can't make it into half podcast half call-in so the rest of we psychotic fans can go off too!!

  9. A bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue if Riot gets possessed, eats the writers and has Jeremy Carver for dessert. :-P

  10. The time thing is my fault on both sides. I suggested over an hour was too long for people to listen to someone else's opinion and I'm the one talking so much we never reach that limit.

  11. I am very glad you are liking this season. You are not alone. You are right - It is probably better that you avoid this episode of the podcast if you are trying to avoid the negative. I still have hopes for this season but I need the brother rift to end...well, 3 episodes ago.

  12. You put your heart into it. That's what counts.

  13. We do say you guys can always record your thoughts and send them in, that's what the voicemail and email is for but no one takes us up on that offer. *Shrugs*

  14. I'm pretty sure Jimmy is not there and hasn't been there since 5.21 'Two Minutes to Midnight' because Cas mentions that the doctors thought he was brain dead after the scans. So we're looking at a Ruby 2.0 situation in that case where it's just Cas inside. But who knows the writers do play fast and loose with the rules about the SPN universe's workings.

  16. Thanks, I'll check it out. :)
Just to repeat that I love listening to both your views and all that you talk about in the podcast.

Please don't shorten it, keep it at least as long as it is now otherwise it just becomes a list of facts and figures read out without a personal touch.

If people like it they will listen whatever length it is, and if they don't want to, they won't listen even if it's only five minutes long. So just do your own thing!

Positive side effect, I had a huge pile of ironing to do and listening to it got me pleasurably through it ,so thanks! :)

  17. I'm digging this season so far. I'm sorry you're not liking it as well as I am. I hope it gets better for you. I agree we need more Crowley and lol, I'd LOVE to see a Crowley spin off. Possibly taking place between his time before he took the place as king of hell. Sadly, we probably wouldn't be able to. I'd settle for novels though. The SPN universe is great and can be expanded so much.

  18. I'm used to a cassette recorder with a microphone and a tape. May take a while to figure the new technology out.

We don't get many of the fancy things here in Indiana. Unless it's John Deere.

I'll try to give it a try this week. Maybe I'll win "Caller of the Show"!

  19. Just go ahead and listen. There may be some viewpoints that you may never have considered.

Garth whacking the Tooth Fairy was priceless. Put Garth in a "Who's Next?" T-Shirt and place warnings for the Easter Bunny.

But in all seriousness this was a great script to gain empathy for Garth as it showed him as flawed, smart, witty, human and a set of skills which is still developing.

I'd LOVE to see Garth interact with Death. Death making that slurping sound with his soft drink, wiping his hands with the napkin and putting Dean in an endless queue of hugging Cupids.

  20. That brother fight, that accomplished nothing [and which Dean doesn't even remember], was the turning point for me. I went from loving S8 to putting it on parole with a big nasty officer to report to. Not enough Purgatory isn't helping - it's the only good thing, and masked how bad this season is. And I am waiting for Dean to be assassinated soon, the way they assassinated Sam.

  21. That is the heart of my disgust with this episode (and season) too. I also fear that this will turn into kicking Dean simply because he hasn't had this story line like Sam and Cas have. So don't need to see that plot AGAIN!!! Oh and I missed Purgatory too.
