Supernatural - 8.06 - Southern Comfort - Quotes

I really dislike this episode and even more every time I rewatch it. It's the same argument over and over again and nothing gets better. It's gotten to the point where I think the brothers should split up for a little while and remember why they hunt together in the first place. It's beyond time to repair this brother rift. Still this episode did have some good quotes so let's get right to it. Oh and since there was not one thing that moved this storyline forward, I've changed that section from "Story-moving" to "Plot" quotes. I also added a section just for this episode.

Funny/Snarky quotes:

8. Dean: "Besides the fact this is making my head hurt, how does this add up to a ghost?"
7. Amelia: "I don't know. You want to talk about it." Sam: "Last night?" Amelia: "No Dean, you pervert."
6. Carl: "I don't think so. There's unfinished business thanks to you. Oh the spectre likes you." Dean: "Oh yeah. Why don't you tell him to come out here. We'll make promise bracelets."
5. Dean: "Maybe we torched the wrong redneck."
4. Dean: "Easy there flyweight. Last time you drank a beer, I had to pick you up off the floor."
3. Dean: "Texas Ranger Garth? Seriously. We're in Missouri."
2. Sam: "I forgot he was a hugger."
1. Garth: "I kind of feel like we should say something alright? Don't you? Just a little…" Dean: "Sure. We won."

Plot quotes:

6. Amelia: "So I moved here and became even more of a hot mess than I already was and you hit a dog."
5. Garth - "So Dean, give me the skinny. Where were you last year?" Dean: "Why don't we save what I did on my summer vacation for another time?" Garth: "Aww come on." Dean: "Alright. I was in Purgatory."
4. Garth: "Bobby was gone. You two were MIA. It was a weird time. Somebody had to step in and take up the slack. Alright, let's just get back to work and we'll talk about this later alright?" Dean: "Did Garth just tell us what to do?"
3. Garth: "I mean it just seems like you and Dean are talkin' but nobody's listenin'….."
2. Dean: "Because Sam, Kevin's in the wind okay? You're sulking around like a eunuch in a whorehouse and I can't help but ask myself when is decapitation not my thing."
1. Dean: "What? You….you were a dentist?" Garth: "Yeah just like a hot minute. Where'd you think I got my first case?' Dean: "Let me guess. Tooth fairy." Garth: "Yeah. Man I felt terrible when I ganked that SOB." Sam: "You killed the Tooth Fairy." Garth: "Yeah man. It's not my proudest moment but it happened."

Emotional quotes:

12. Dean: "I guess people change don’t they? Hmm we let that werewolf Kate go." Sam: "She was different. She…You think Benny's different? Huh, he tell you he's not drinking live blood or something? And you believe him. Wow! Okay. No you're right. People do change."
11. Sam: "I don't pity you. Okay, I don't. You and I, we're a lot of things but we're not to be pitied. Look I lost my brother, Dean, a few months ago. It felt like my world imploded and came raining down on me and I ran just like you."
10. Sam: "Alright, you've said it. We both played a little fast and loose." Dean: "Yeah I might have lied but I never once betrayed you. I never once left you to die and for what? A girl. You left me to die for a girl!"
9. Garth: "Bobby belonged to all of us Dean, not just you and Sam. I'm just taking what he showed me and trying to do something with it. That's all."
8. Sam: "Come on Dean. I know it's not you in there pulling the strings." Dean: "Shut up. Don't. You never even wanted this life. Always blamed me for pulling you back into it." Sam: "That's not true."
7. Dean: "Yeah, I've got a vampire buddy and you turned your phone off for a year." Sam: "Don't turn this on me." Dean: "Look. If Benny slips up and some other hunter turns his lights out, so be it." Sam: "But it's not going to be you right?"
6. Sam: "Own up to your cr** Dean. I told you from the jump where I was coming from, why I didn't look for you, but you…you had secrets. You had Benny and you got on your high and mighty and you've been kicking me ever since you got back. But that's over. So move on or I will."
5. Dean: "Shut up! Mistakes, hhh. Well let's go through some of Sammy's greatest hits. Drinking demon blood, check. Being in cahoots with Ruby. Not telling me that you lost your soul or how about running around with Samuel for a whole year, letting me think that you were dead while you were doing all kinds of crazy. Those aren't mistakes Sam. Those are choices."
4. Sam: "I don't know Dean. How about because you haven't said a word to me since Prentiss Island and now what? You want me to shut up and ride shotgun and act like nothing happened?" Dean: "You want to talk about Benny. Fine. Let's talk." Sam: "Okay. How about he's vampire." Dean: "He's also the reason I'm topside and not roasting on a spit in Purgatory. Anything else?" Sam: "Don't pretend I don't get it. I know you had to do what you had to do down there." Dean: "I highly doubt you get anything about Purgatory." Sam: "But you're out now and Benny's still breathing. Why?" Dean: "He's my friend Sam."
3. Garth: "Come on Dean. You do not want to kill your brother. You…you've been protecting him your whole life. Don't stop now."
2. Dean: "You should have looked for me when I was in Purgatory."
1. Dean: "You're not Bobby, okay. You're never gonna be Bobby so stop!"

"Oh Just Kill Me Now" Quotes:

6. Dean: "He left me to rot in Purgatory." Garth: "Alright, alright, maybe he did. I don't…I don't know. I wasn't there but I'm sure he had his reasons."
5. Dean: "Benny's been more of a brother to me this past year than you've ever been. That's right. Cas let me down. You let me down. The only person who hasn't let me down is Benny."
4. Dean: "He's my friend Sam." Sam: "Uhhh, and what about my friend, Amy? She was what? Because you sure as hell didn't have a problem ganking her." Dean: "I guess people change don’t they?"
3. Sam: "Good. You know what hear this too. I just might be that hunter who runs into Benny one day and ices him." Dean: "I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it won't we." Sam: "Yeah. Yeah you keep saying that."
2. Garth: "You're such an idjit."
1. Sam: "Hold up. Are you the new Bobby?"

Eye-Rollingly Bad Dialogue:

1. Carl: "Why am I going to make mustard from your brainstem?"

  1. Jeremy Carver, you are killing me here. You know Christmas is around the corner and all I want is an end to the brother rift for hiatus. And if it's not too greedy, a second half of the season that put secondary characters in the corner, not the brothers.

  2. Gotta agree and.. disagree.. with you here. What I miss most is Sam and Dean from the old days, like in House of Faith (or whatever it was called) where sam was so innocent and sweet and perfect, and Dean was the protective brother again. BUT, that's never really goign to happen again, is it? Can it, with everything that's happened to these two? I don't mind a rift being between them, I'm more frustrated with fandom that thinks everything must be perfect between them and they should never ever be separate in an episode. That gets more old then them bickering. Likewise, I like that the show is more then /just/ about the brothers now. We've had 7 full seasons of them, its not like we're lacking on our Sam and Dean quota. Not that I want Secondary characters to rule the roost, but I /do/ love SPN's usually well thought out, interesting, or love to hate secondaries that add something more to the show then the same formula used in almost every single episode.

I /do/ hate sam and dean arguing though. While I understand Sam's anger, I really do feel he's OOC this season. more so then ever before. how the heck does Sam just /leave/ his brother for dead? Even if he thought he was truly dead, which we have no evidence for that since Sam seems to have just jumped in the impala after dean disappeared and took off down the road. I get this impression that Sam was a little too eager to accept Dean as dead just so he could go enjoy his apple pie life, and that /isn't/ Sam. Not as I've understood him. So.. I have to side with Dean. The spectre made him say things that perhaps he's already over, or should be over with, by now, but Sam was /harsh/. Sam's not once truly seemed sorry or even concerned over just abandoning his brother to purgatory. I'm hoping there's some influence on him, but.. I dont' know. Its nervewracking.

  3. I don't know about favorite, but this was my least favorite exchange. Several parts of this completely pulled me out of the moment.

Sam: "All right. You said it. We both played a little fast and loose."

First, to Dean, mistakes are choices. They're bad choices that you regret, but if there's no choice, that means it's something you are forced to do, so it's not a mistake.

Second, to Dean, in season 6 you were ready to kill Soulless Sam without batting an eye because you seemed to believe that it was not Sam. If deep down you have been believing all this time that it WAS Sam, then that means you're now very comfortable with killing your brother.

Third, to Sam, when did you stop defending your choices? When John gave you crap about leaving the family, you got in his face and stood up for yourself. Granted in this case Dean had a gun on you, but you were like this in the season premiere too.

  4. I will agree with you one hundred percent. Sam makes no sense to me. I can easily imagine Dean is in the same boat. Dean bringing the past up? Well, Sam just left him for dead and never made an attempt. He now has to wonder just how sincere Sam was about anything in the past. I can't blame him. What I worry about is Benny letting Dean down. I got a gut feeling he will, but Sam's attitude is very angry regarding Benny. I think his comment means he wants to kill Benny because Dean killed Amy. There's a difference so far. Amy killed people. As far we know, other than vampires, Benny clean. Why, Sam? I don't like this. I want to know the real reason for Sam being this way. Dean's is totally understandable, but not SAm.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Well, Dean was ready when he thought Soulless Sam was not Sam. The difference here is he now knows it was Sam, so it is not Dean feeling very comfortable with killing his brother. That's rather twisting it to make Dena the total bad guy here. Dean has never had the love and appreciation he should be getting....not from John or Sam. We can go back to preseason 1 for that. Sam running away on Dean's watch and whatever John did to him. Sam never considering what it would do to Dean. He was a kid, yes, but Dean raised him, gave up things for him, tried to give him a childhood he never had, and sold his soul for him. Dean did hunt for ways to get him out of the cage because Sam called him on it. Dean always looked for him.

I just want to know why running away without trying to find out if your brother is dead or alive is okay? If I were Dean, I would have brought up all the hurts that lead to something devastating too.

    ReplyDelete
  6. The first part of your argument about Soulless Sam doesn't make sense to me. Why would Dean now think that Soulless Sam was the real Sam if he didn't then? If anything, hearing Sam confirm that he has memories of Hell from that time period should strengthen his conviction that Soulless Sam wasn't really Sam.

The second part: "Dean has never had the love and appreciation he should be getting....not from John or Sam. We can go back to preseason 1 for that. Sam running away on Dean's watch and whatever John did to him. Sam never considering what it would do to Dean. He was a kid, yes, but Dean raised him, gave up things for him, tried to give him a childhood he never had, and sold his soul for him."

hmmm. My better judgement says not to get into this, but what the heck ... I'll just say that the entire show is full of cannon that Sam has appreciated Dean very very much - much more than most people appreciate their siblings. As for John, we never got much of his POV, but the fact that he sold his soul and gave up life and his obsession (his revenge against YED) to save Dean's life is a sign that he appreciated Dean.

As for the last part, we're sorely lacking on Sam's POV on this, so I'm reluctant to speak on this one way or another. Personally, I'm hoping for a reset and finding out that none of this is what it seems.

me to but it cant be happy all the time haven said that i do want there old relationship back to me it has never been the same since s5 when sam betrayed dean but it was all swept under a rug and maby this time because they haven't done that ..they can actually get back to being brothers again ...i think the 2nd half will be alot better ...but that's just me ..

  8. Guess we just leave them here, correct???

    1. Garth: "I kind of feel like we should say something alright? Don't you? Just a little…" Dean: "Sure. We won." This was the only laugh I got out of this ep.

    2. Dean: "He left me to rot in Purgatory." Garth: "Alright, alright,
maybe he did. I don't…I don't know. I wasn't there but I'm sure he had
his reasons." I also believe he had a good reason to not look and that is what I am
waiting for this season. Sam just would not do that, not Sam

    3. Sam: "Alright, you've said it. We both played a little fast and
loose." Dean: "Yeah I might have lied but I never once betrayed you. I
never once left you to die and for what? A girl. You left me to die
    for a girl!"

4.Dean: "Because Sam, Kevin's in the wind okay? You're sulking
around like a eunuch in a whorehouse and I can't help but ask myself
when is decapitation not my thing."

5.Dean: "Shut up! Mistakes, hhh. Well let's go through some of
Sammy's greatest hits. Drinking demon blood, check. Being in cahoots
with Ruby. Not telling me that you lost your soul or how about running
around with Samuel for a whole year, letting me think that you were dead
while you were doing all kinds of crazy. Those aren't mistakes Sam.
    Those are choices."

Easy to see my favorite part was the brother fight, all this needed to come out.

  9. Or John gave up his soul so Dean would be there to kill Sam if need be. OK I know that is lame, because John could have just stayed and done that, but Dean was always John's soldier and his son. I won't get into what I think of John for even telling Dean that.

I don't understand your first argument about Soulless Sam?? When Dean was talking about killing Sam he did not know it was because he was soulless, he thought a Demon or something had taken over Sam, you know like the Levis did. A look alike. When he found out it was because his soul was gone, he died to get Death to help get it back.

    ReplyDelete
  10. So with you on this. In the fight when Sam was on the floor, did you see the look in his eyes, there was something there that we have not found out..I would bet on it. Jared was so good in this ep, and if I am wrong going to be so disappointed with his acting skills. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  11. With Soulless Sam, I'm talking about the end of the arc, when Dean was determined to resoul Sam even though Cas had warned him that it would kill Soulless Sam, or at best leave him a drooling mess on the floor. He didn't know Death would suggest a wall, but Dean was determined to go through with it anyway because he believed that Soulless Sam wasn't Sam, and that the real Sam was his soul still in Hell.

If Dean sincerely believed that Soulless Sam wasn't really Sam, as he maintained throughout all of season 6, then he wouldn't be harboring a grudge about Soulless Sam not telling him he was alive or soulless (which Sam presumably didn't even know until Cas told both of them).

    ReplyDelete
  12. About John, I agree that there was a lot of bad parenting there. But John had reason to believe that Sam would at some point go darkside and be a danger to the world because of what YED had done to him. Do you think that John should not have warned Dean?

  13. Ooops! I fixed it. The form should be on this page now for you to nominate your 2 favorite quotes. Sorry about that.

  14. I would be satisfied if the brothers were actually happy a few times each season. Smiling and laughing has been in short supply. Nope, I don't need cupcakes and rainbows. I just need the brothers getting along, on the same page, and a united front against evil.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I don't think Sam was ever innocent and perfect. He grew up in a hunting life and that tossed innocence out the door right from the get go. He said as much in Something Wicked in season 1. I also don't think Dean and Sam will ever have a "perfect" relationship. They are too different for that and that's great. What I do think is that since season 4 we have had the brothers in some contrived, less than believable rift designed just to bring conflict between them. It is an old and tired way to bring in conflict and usually ends up with out of character brothers and an unhappy fandom. I think it would be novel if instead they got along and were united in fighting evil, especially since that rarely happens these days. There is enough conflict just in the supernatural that they don't need to tear the brothers apart EVERY SINGLE SEASON thinking that it will seem new. It doesn't. We are at lather, rinse, repeat stage and they need to break that cycle.

    ReplyDelete
  16. thanks done, BTW they both say quote 1.

    ReplyDelete
  17. No I don't think he should have told him, that was an awful thing to put on Dean's shoulders. John was just guessing and it made Dean look at Sam in a different way, just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Dean is a good enough hunter that if Sam went dark side he would have figured it out.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I disagree. I think John's original plan was to deal with YED himself and hopefully eliminate the threat before he had to involve either of his sons. When he made the choice to sacrifice himself, he had to pass the burden on to Dean because there were no other options. Maybe the less selfish act would have been to let Dean die and not make the deal with YED, but I think John just didn't have any fight left (or knew he wouldn't have any after watching Dean die) and knew he wouldn't succeed.

My guess is that John had the same information Gordon had in Hunted - that demons were planning to use the psychic children to fight in a war on Hell's side, and that Sam was one of those children. As difficult as hearing the warning was, it was better that Dean be warned so that they could try to get ahead of what was coming - because the alternative (Sam turning and Dean actually killing him) would have been much worse.
