Supernatural 8.05 "Blood Brother" Review

1 Nov 2012

Supernatural 8.05 “Blood Brother” gave us a lot of answers and left us asking more questions. It’s likely to be an episode that evokes a lot of fan reaction. With a finely crafted Ben Edlund script, expertly directed by Guy Bee, and stunningly acted by the entire cast, this is going down as one of the best episodes of the series for me, even if the final scene had me screaming at the television.
Tonight’s episode went a long way towards filling out the back story of Amelia and Benny. And here’s where fandom is likely to be polarized. I’m really enjoying Jared Padalecki’s work this season because I really like this Sam. He still cares about the world around him. In fact, he’s enjoying being able to connect with people in a way that he can’t when he’s hunting. And he’s really connecting with Amelia. Liane Balaban has done an outstanding job conveying a quietly wounded woman; her performances are subtle and believable, and I’m really looking forward to finding out more about her. I like that she’s observant and logical, her comments on Sam’s wardrobe all coming from army surplus comes to mind. It feels very right to me that this relationship between Amelia and Sam comes about because they recognize and understand each other on a very deep level. It’s telling and important that this relationship doesn’t simply start with sex as so many of both brothers’ relationships do. I also really appreciate how the flashbacks are being done. Sam’s flashbacks in this episode felt a lot like Dean’s in previous episodes as something happening in the present triggers a memory from the past year – it’s a good technique that mimics how we really do remember things.
The bulk of this episode really rested on Benny’s back story, and his relationship with Dean. Ty Olsson is outstanding in this episode and solidifies himself as a terrific addition to the show. Now, let’s just hope that we can keep him! He too delivers a subtle and nuanced performance. Benny is going to present problems of acceptance for viewers as well as Sam, but it’s one of Supernatural’s greatest assets that it can force us to think again and again about what it means to be a monster and to keep coming up with new answers. Olsson delivers an outstanding performance to bring Benny to life and to make him a sympathetic character. His slow southern drawl is equally adept at relating the heart wrenching tale of his death and lost love and the hilarious banter that always punctuates an Edlund script.
I have to admit, I don’t think it will be possible to have enough Dean, Benny, and Castiel in Purgatory scenes, watching the expressions fly across Jensen Ackles’ face as Benny baits Castiel. Misha Collins is always a joy to watch and this version of Castiel is very much like the Cas we came to know and love in seasons four and five. Of course Cas, under Edlund’s prompting, would be the one to muse about the metaphysics of where a monster’s soul goes when it’s killed in Purgatory! We also learn that Castiel is a seraph. This is the first time we’ve learned what his standing is in the angel hierarchy. Of course, this information is of limited use because the hierarchy is different whether you are talking about the Judeo or Christian mythology and Supernatural usually has some version of the mythology of its own anyway. What it could mean, however, is that Cas is actually a fairly high ranking angel.
It’s interesting that both Cas and Benny try to convince Dean that Cas is dangerous to have around and that it’s likely he won’t be able to get out anyway. Benny says that Purgatory wants to spit Dean out because he’s human and Benny insists that without “the fangs and fun” he was human once. What everyone fails to point out is that Cas is currently inhabiting a human vessel. Surely that must count for something. Dean keeps insisting that he isn’t leaving without Cas.
The flashbacks to Purgatory are once again stunningly shot and lit. I love the use of freeze frames and quick edits in the fight scenes and the gritty washed out colors. They are contrasted by the saturated colors of Sam’s flashbacks that are so full of life and so at odds with Purgatory. The fights are violent and the camaraderie between Dean and Benny starts to make sense.
Even after a year in Purgatory, they seem to still be learning about each other, or perhaps re-learning about each other topside. Dean is amazed at how Benny is able to heal from his injuries, and Benny is amazed that Dean’s loyalty and friendship extend to him. It’s possible that Benny accepted Dean’s loyalty while still in Purgatory because they were both useful to each other and didn’t think it would continue once they were out, but Dean is nothing if not loyal to a fault. It’s one of the reasons why Dean is always so hurt by anyone being less loyal. It’s one of the things that Sam could never understand about Dean’s relationship to John: that he would remain loyal regardless of the others actions or inactions.
Benny does recognize this loyalty in Dean and witnessed it between Dean and Cas in Purgatory. Benny does try to let Dean off the hook, but Dean knows Benny is in over his head in trying to go after his maker and insists on helping. This is another parallel between Sam’s flashbacks and the present story between Dean and Benny. Sam has that same instinct to help. And of course, that is the central tenant of the family business that both boys have learned: helping people. Sam may have stopped hunting but the flashbacks in this episode prove that he didn’t stop helping people.
I loved the scene between Benny and Dean as Benny explains what his old nest does. The dialogue is some of Supernatural’s best and there’s nothing more fun than watching Dean when he thinks he’s been clever:

“Vampire pirates. That’s what you guys are. Vampirates!”

But what makes this scene work so well is the obvious chemistry between Olsson and Ackles and the subtle things in the episode like the gentle amusement of Benny to Dean’s vampirates comment and Dean covertly pocketing the dead vampire’s cash. Both Ackles and Olsson marry an economy of movement with expressive delivery in their acting styles.
It’s important that the scene in which Benny tells Dean about falling in love with Andreas and being killed by his maker takes place in the Impala. It’s a significant nod to the depth of this relationship as this is where we’ve come to expect the brothers to have their serious conversations. Benny is more open and honest and bares more of his soul than Sam and Dean have done with each other in a long time, however.
It was also a great choice on Bee’s part to set the scene where Benny voices his problems in determining what’s real in the same forest that they use to shoot Purgatory. It looks very different shot with the usual lighting of the show. Once again a shout out to the entire production crew for their attention to every detail to reinforce the story.
The phone calls between Sam and Dean as he’s trying to rescue Benny are a terrific example of how seamlessly Edlund can blend comedy with drama with the result being an increase to the tension and drama.
Olsson is fantastic in the scenes with his former nest, simultaneously exuding anger and remorse, wrestling with trying to do what’s right. Andreas reminds Benny of what it’s like to be turned when all you think about is blood, and she points out that Benny severed his ties with Quentin when he died, so he’ll be able to kill him. Benny, we learn, only came back to stop the killing, and in the end, he does what he sets out to do, and Dean killing Andreas spares Benny from having to do that, but it does mean that with the death of his nest, Benny is left on his own. Benny wanted to put Andreas’ memory to rest and he realizes that what he loved “it ain’t here anymore. It was snuffed out a long time ago by monsters like me.” The parallel between Benny’s nest and family is underscored by Quentin’s calling him his “wayward son”, an obvious shout out to the familiar Kansas song that ends every Supernatural season “Carry On My Wayward Son.” But Benny has truly changed.
Benny tells Dean in Purgatory that he “drinks blood, he doesn’t drink people.” He wasn’t killing people before he went to Purgatory because he’s seen something in humanity that shouldn’t be taken. He promises Dean he isn’t going to start killing people once he gets out, which is completely consistent with what we see in this episode. In fact, Benny seems to find life or humanity more sacred than Dean. Sam and Dean's conversation at the beginning of the episode in which Dean defends his attempt to kill Mrs Tran because he was trying to kill Crowley, reinforces the theme in this episode. Benny helps to prove himself to Dean by saving Cas even after he insists that Cas is going to get them killed. Benny has somewhat lost his way with the killing of his entire nest, and he tells Dean he isn’t sure what he is anymore, but he’s proven once again to Dean that he is loyal and a man, or vampire, of his word. Dean is genuinely worried about Benny, but he sees the goodness in Benny.
The final scene of this episode is a tour de force of acting and directing and editing. Sam meets them on the docks and we have his first meeting with Benny. All the dialogue is Olsson’s. This may be my favorite scene of Jared Padalecki’s in the entire run of the series. He’s not happy with Dean, but doesn’t hesitate to shake Benny’s hand, then in close up we see as it registers that Benny’s hand is not the hand of a living person. Dean looks unrepentant. Shock gives way to steely hunter on Sam’s face and we get a close up of Sam’s hand unbuckling his weapon with Dean’s out of focus face in the background. An overlay of a heartbeat punctuates the now slow motion shot as Benny tilts his head to acknowledge Sam reaching for his weapon. Benny clearly was ready to accept his fate. Had Sam tried to kill him, I doubt Benny would have tried to stop him. More because he’s in a bad place after losing Andreas again, but I wonder if he will go out of his way not to get between the brothers. Then we cut to Dean slowly and subtly shaking his head no. Sam acquiesces to his brother and stands down, but his face becomes a mask of anger. Dean’s face closes down. Dean is not going to apologize for Benny because that is what loyalty means for Dean. Dean and Benny have a relationship forged in Purgatory that I don’t believe will ever replace his bond with his brother – the episode title is blood brother – but there is more than one way that you can share blood with someone – in battle or in your veins. Benny acknowledges that the brothers have a lot to talk about and he leaves. Sam and Dean’s eyes meet, and we fade to black...
And I started screaming at my television because I simply can’t wait for that conversation! Is it next week yet???

  1. Meh, It was ooc and boring garbage. Tons of side characters, hilariously bad flashbacks and hardly any Sam and Dean interaction. Carver has literally cut of the heart of the show, while throwing Sam's characterization under the bus, making him being the mean one again while saint!Dean is in the right. I hate you, Carver. You deserve to be fired with this mess of OOC and lazy writing lacking any continuity.

  2. I find your ending to be the same as mine. It is a good thing I live in the country so neighbors did not hear me scream. lol EXCELLENT review.

I have grown to love Benny and am going to hate to see him go, love the chemistry between Dean, Cas and Benny.

The flashbacks for both Sam and Dean are done so well and are some of my favorite parts, just wish they were longer.

Have to watch again, but I loved the quotes from the first of the ep when Sam and Dean are going at it, the what word is giving you problems and did you have a stroke.

  3. First off: Thank you Lisa for a magnificant review!!
Secondly: I agree with you all the way, it was a episode close to perfection. Great job Ben, Guy, Jensen, Jared, Liane, Ty and dog! LOVED IT!

  4. I absolutely loved the ending... I was literally at the edge of my seat [couch] ... I almost fell when the end credits came on. I refused to belive it had been an hour.... I can't wait for the next episode! I'm so glad we're getting a bit more Sam, and that it seems we're starting to get more brotherly moments. The promo has me itching for the next episode! I can't wait to see how Sam will deal with Benny[ and Dean relationship with him] and how Dean will deal with Sam 'leaving him to die for a girl' and his distrust of Benny.

I love the fashbacks, but I do prefer the Purgatory ones to Sam just sitting and talking with Amelia.

I'm now sure(ish) that when he end with Dean's flashbacks [which will likely happen in the next episode] we will get on with more of Sam's 'year off' and more brother moments, or at least more both-brothers-on-the-screen-at-the-same-time-moments.

And of course, the Cas moments! Cas is more or less back to the same old Cas! I loved when Benny called him his aunt and Cas became extremely irritated and made sure to point out he Was Not his aunt. I loved the seasons 4-5 Cas and was glad to see him back. It seems to me Dean didn't start trusting Benny until he saved Cas's life. It also seems to me Cas really didn't want to be saved [he just lay there, though he wasn't truely pinned] Trying to get out of the way so as to not be a 'beckon' while around Dean? That seems to be the most likely case.
I loved the Dean, Cas and Benny moments. I like Benny the most in the Purgatory flashbacks, though I'm not so interested in him while on current time. He's such a new character, [the first we see of him is when he's hugging Dean, already good enough friends to call him 'brother'] I'm not really interested in his story... I just want more Sam and Dean... and Cas.
As excited as I am for the brothers 'talk' next week, what I really can't wait for is the episode's Purgatory flashbacks. I'm sure its the last one, with Dean and Benny getting out and Cas getting left behind [for whatever reason]. Plus, we have Garth back!
All in all, I thought it was a good episode... just that I'm not interested in Benny's story.

  5. Jann, I'm quite sure you're another troll so I don't think I should reply to you. Lis, great review. I love how you talk about the filming nuances. The lighting, set & so forth. I love this ep. Love how they pull the dark side of purgatory & then pull viewers to Sam being a handyman with a dog named Dog. There are desperation in Sam to finish the main job, because I think he wanted to go back to Amelia. I'm not sure why Dean keeping Benny identity from Sam. Why didn't he tell Sam about Benny in the first place? Sam is more emphatic towards monster so there's no reason to hide a good vampire from Sam.(Plus Ty was Elenor right hand man, Eli. Kudos to SPN family for taking an actor to play a different vampire twice.) I think he might not want Sam to look differently at him. As for Cas coming back soon, it might have something to do with Dean telling Alfie (Samandriel) about Cas in purgatory. Kudos to the SPN family for a good interesting ep. Please don't snuff out Benny. I like him. Ignore the trolls.

  6. I have to concur; this is one of the best episodes in the entire run of the series, in my opinion, and there have been some good ones. Admittedly, I have a soft spot for vengeance, despair, and sacrifice, all of which were evident here, and all well handled. But as you note, the real strength of this episode is uniformly excellent acting. Great review!

  7. I adored the banter in this episode! So great to have the brothers' voices really back, you know? And for the record? I rarely scream at my tv...
I'm really hoping that they find a way to keep Benny around. Having a "monster" as a friend really adds to the complexity of the story for me - and Ty Olsson is just such a terrific actor. Supernatural has a truly gifted casting team to keep giving us such wonderful actors like Misha and Ty and Liane!

  8. I have an African Grey parrot that also gives comments about shows and last night at the end he said WOW. He really loved the crow on The Vampire Diaries and will still caw when the show comes on.

I loved the chemistry between Cas, Benny and Dean and boy did the sparks fly last night when Sam met Benny. I do love this show, one of the few I watch the night it is on.

  9. I love the brotherly moments, but like Jared and Jensen have both said, it's a lot more fun when they are at odds and have other characters to play off of too. I don't think there is going to be a lot of opportunity for action in the Sam flashbacks, but I'm really enjoying them anyway. For me, these storylines feel very realistic from a character-driven perspective. These guys are now 9(?) years older than when we met them, and they're both smart enough to have changed a lot in that time, so I'm really excited to be exploring that. I get what you mean about not being that interested in Benny yet - he is a new character and we still haven't gotten a really good idea about how he is going to fit into the show going forward. Now that he's done what he came back from Purgatory to do, I'm really excited to see how Carver envisions him fitting in... They have said in interviews that we are likely to get Purgatory and Amelia flashbacks for a lot of the season, so I'm hoping next week isn't the last we see of Purgatory... but I'm also anxious for more of Amelia's backstory - I'm hoping we get to see her in the present as well. I want to see her reaction to Dean and vice versa!

  10. I think Dean was really worried about what Sam would think of him befriending a vampire. It's one thing to let a good one live, it's another to have been actively working with one. After Sam didn't hesitate to kill Dean's Amazon daughter, I wonder if Dean is also trying to protect Benny. It would also make sense to keep him as far away from any of the hunting community as possible as they would be really likely to kill first and ask questions later. I'm really hoping that we get to see Amelia in the present-day storyline too. I want to see a meeting between her and Dean!
The thing that makes Supernatural such an outstanding show is that it is strong on every level - so look for all my reviews to have shout outs to the entire production!

  11. This review hit on one of the things I love most about this season - the contrast between Sam's and Dean's flashbacks. Sam's are so colorful and full of light, which is a sharp contrast to Dean's in purgatory, which are much darker and grittier. It just goes to show what incredibly talented people we have working on this show, and that it's not just limited to the cast.

  12. This one one of the best epis I have seen. Sam was so pissed at Dean and I don't blame him. Loved the ending. It was so tense and powerful with Sam seething and extremely wary of Benny yet prepared to kill him. To say I was totally bummed when the hour was up is an understatement. I was yelling at my TV, too. I want more now!

  13. Yes, I love Sam's hair. Don't care what anyone says.

  14. One of the things I don't buy is Benny's accent. It seems like he's supposed to have a southern accent but can't quite pull it off. Dude's from Nova Scotia, eh. Plus, Vampires have preternatural hearing and smell. Yet, Dean and Benny are just talking away as they close in on the house in the woods and even while they are in the house Dean is whispering Benny's name over and over.

  15. Here's a fun fact: Benny aka Ty Olsson played the original Deputy Andy on Eureka.

  16. I like Sam's hair also, it was the sideburns that was eating his face that I did not like. Glad they have been cut back. As long as a man's hair is clean, I like it long.

  17. Great review! The only thing that I disagree about is the ending. You see, I started screaming at the screen when Sam reached for his weapon, not when the screen went black. ;D

  18. I didn't even notice! Thanks for giving me a perfectly good reason to rewatch the episode for the second time tonight. ;)

  19. I agree just about whole heartedly with everything in this review. This was a Very excellent episode, which showed some great Sam scenes and really gave us information on a character that seems to fit pretty seamlessly into the supernatural family. I know people are scared, or worried at least, about either Sam getting pushed into the background (I really never see that as true, and I love Sam, but I know its a concern), or Cas getting pushed into the background or illtreated, but I think Carver and Edlund and this crew can handle multiple important characters well on SPN! Its something Sarah seemed to fail to do, but this season is REALLY showing improvements. I haven't been so intrigued about SPN in a long time, and outside of the last major flop of an episode, this season is strong, and ratings have gone up.

  20. Definitely agree! Serge Ladouceur the director of photography is a master - and I was remiss in not giving him a direct shout out. But the entire crew delivers week in and week out making this one of the best looking shows on tv with one of the smallest budgets.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I completely agree with you here. I was actually nervous when the episode ended that there would be a terrific backlash - like last week. But I think people are slowly beginning to trust that Carver and Edlund are going to give everyone a fair shake.

  22. YES!!! I hated those sideburns - so I cracked up when Amelia started to say they were creepy! Cuz they were!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. And some of the best fight scenes in TV or movies. I hate a fight where no one comes away bleeding, that does not happen with SPN and the guys keep their cuts and bruises as they heal...unless Cas is around of course. lol

  24. Sam has the right not just to be angry but hurt, how could dean do that to him? The difference is Sam didn't want to go thru a funneral/moral service of his own brother and having to live alone without him, so he took this direction that led him in a very fulfilling relationship in despair that was with Amelia, Sam was engaging but he wasn't all hyped, does Sam compare or contrast the sex that he had with both dean and Amelia? Was the other one better than the other one? In what scenoioro or case? How was the other one better than the other one, who does he give more crap about, who is he really in love with, we see Sam sleeping with dean a lot on the show and how that made him feel, who does Sam do more in case of love, he has tried to give dean his daddy who loves him, Sam has done not less and not more for Amelia and to him-she's not so bad, Sam loves Amelia as a wonderful person that she is and he cares about her so much more than he cared about Jess, he's genuinely instreaked, interested, and caring but he's not in love with her, you can just see, and yeah you do need relationships base on experience and for Sam that was his way of grieving, isn't that not okay, the phyiscal aspect is what makes dean the way he is but the emotional aspect, sam was only grieving and dean should just appreciate that, that fact sam was grieving, losing someone and dean's pissed at that? Sam wasn't satified by Amelia and if he was, why would he leave her in the middle of the night? She doesn't know where he is and Sam doesn't want her to know for what reasons, dean's safety, Benny's, so maybe he does cares about dean, to keep her safe and she should be lucky also because he does cares about her too! Sam and dean have always have had many issues and they are still working on them and that's what manners most, Sam has to manupilate Amelia if she is going track him down and perhaps calling dean/slalking him might end up with Sam as a trio, you have Sam now left Amelia, here with dean for few weeks and he's adjusting to him being alive and more than alive and dean wants to kill Sam literally over a girl that Sam doesn't give much about since he's really giving more energy into dean that she doesn't appreciate but can appreciate since maybe he might have talked about him-we don't know but the outcome is Sam's with dean and not with Amelia physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and sexually. Dean is really conflicting as you can see and we all fans need to respect that dean is just unhappy with his Sammy and Sammy is just hurt and wants make things all better and how can they do that if they can't talk it out? By giving each other a chance to really open up to each other and then decide what's the best thing to do-make up and make love! They just make love-do i sound corny? It's better than sounding crude and insensitive like nameless other fans
