Stats Spotlight - First Quarter Results for Castle / Revolution / T.B.B.T. / Modern Family / Once Upon A Time and more

(Check out my website, www.seriesmonitor.com)

It's been a rather large gap between now and the last article I wrote, but this one is a little different, and hopefully worth the wait

As regular visitors to my website will know, I break down each season of all the shows I cover into quarters comprising of 5 to 6 episodes each, for shows that have a 22 to 24 episode season. A few of the shows I cover have now aired 6 episodes of this season, with more due to air their sixth episode this week. I plan to cover those shows this time next week

The way this works is pretty simple, you take all the ratings, add them together to make a larger number, then divide it by 6 to get an average rating across the first 6 episodes. This same method works for calculating the average audience

Each show in the table below has the ratings and audience highs and lows, along with the ratings and audience average. Note that shows that aired last season have the numbers from last season's first 6 episodes listed in brackets. Also bear in mind that NBC's Revolution has aired its seventh episode, but only the first six are counted in this table.

Where the biggest margin exists between a show's results from last season and this season in a category, the box is colored orange. If there is a gain in results on last season, the box is colored green

Show  Ratings high  Ratings low  Ratings average  Audience high  Audience low  Audience average
Castle  2.2 (3.2) 1.9 (2.1) 2.05  (2.63) 10.94 (13.28) 10.02 (10.23) 10.55 (11.38)
 Revolution 4.1 3.0 3.33 11.65 7.90 8.95
T.B.B.T.5.2 (5.1)4.5 (4.4)4.90 (4.82)15.90 (14.94)14.23 (13.26) 15.42 (14.35)
Modern Family5.5 (6.1)4.2 (5.7)4.83 (5.87)14.44 (14.53)10.62 (13.04) 12.38 (13.74)
Once Upon A Time3.9 (4.0)3.0 (3.2)3.42 (3.68)11.36 (12.94)9.45 (9.66) 10.09 (11.31)
Revenge3.2 (3.3)2.6 (2.4)2.77 (2.72)9.74 (10.02)7.94 (7.68) 8.54 (8.47)
The Mentalist2.1 (3.1)1.5 (2.5)1.82 (2.60)11.06 (13.56)8.10 (12.39)9.70 (12.83)

Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, The Mentalist, and Castle all have additional seasons beyond the last season that is shown in the table. To see these seasons, go to my website, www.seriesmonitor.com, click on the show you're interested in, then to the Statistics section, where you'll see the Season Breakdown button. There you will find complete quarterly breakdowns of the previous seasons that have aired, along with graphs and the information for the lead-in shows. I'm not going to copy and paste it all here when it's already available on my site!. For Once Upon A Time and Revenge, there is also further analysis on the data shown in the table on their respective Season Breakdown pages

Castle and The Mentalist are down an equal full ratings point on the highest rated episode of the first six episodes this season when compared to last season. Modern Family is down the most on the lowest rating episode, and the average ratings of the first six episodes when compared to last season. The Mentalist takes out the final three - audience high, low, and average when compared to the last six episodes this season, probably due to its new timeslot, and even later 10:30pm start most evenings

The Big Bang Theory and Revenge are the only shows in this table to have increased their results on last season in any category. Remember Revenge has a new timeslot this season, and it must have paid off because it increased its ratings low and average, and its audience low and average on last season, while The Big Bang Theory increased on all fronts, a remarkable effort given the general downward trend of most shows across all networks this season.

I hope this has been interesting reading. As I said, there is far more content on these statistics on my website if you are looking for more information and comparisons

As alway, thanks for reading. Are there any odd or surprising figures that have caught your eye?? Make yourself heard in the comments below

  4. Great stuff Jimmy, very good and clear table.

So only TBBT has hit a higher high this season that in the past.

Also strange quirk in the Castle is one of the most popular shows online, especially here at SpoilerTV, but it's ratings don't reflect that.

Be interesting one day to come up with a table that looks at some sort of ration between on-line popularity and tv ratings to see where the biggest difference is. eg NCIS is one of the most popular shows in terms of Audience but it never makes our Top 10 Popular online shows here at spoilertv.

  5. I agree, the same could be said for Firefly when compared to Castle if I'm not mistaken. It would be very hard to study the effects of online fandom on a show's ratings, especially considering many fans are overseas and don't watch the show in the US, but rather online instead.

These are just the shows I monitor, and thanks to the election today, NCIS won't air its sixth episode of the season until next week.Grey's Anatomy, Scandal and possibly Last Resort and 666 Park Ave will feature in next week's table (if LR and 666 get a full season order)

  12. Thanks Jimmy for the stats. One slightly off question: is there any reason that there are no posts about the last ratings of Castle on either of the ABC boards? I know that one of the main contributor has been missing for a while but I also read that posts and threads were misteriously disappearing there. The results have always been keenly waited and discussed by the fans, so I found their absence strange.

  13. Unfortunately I don't have anything to do with ABC, so I wouldn't know what's been going on at their end. Things might change next week - who knows
