NBC: +17, CBS: - 5, CW: -21, ABC: -33, Fox: -48
----------
-Winners:
NCIS (CBS), Dancing With the Stars (ABC), The Voice (NBC), NCIS: Los Angeles (CBS)
-Losers:
Raising Hope (Fox), Ben and Kate (Fox), Hart of Dixie (CW), Happy Endings (ABC), Don’t Trust the B____ in Apartment 23 (ABC), The Mindy Project (Fox), Emily Owens, M.D. (CW), Private Practice (ABC)
-----------
-Ratings Breakdown:
It was a typical overnight Tuesday victory for CBS with a first-place finish in each of the six half-hours care of NCIS (10.9 rating/17 share); NCIS: Los Angeles (9.9/16), which is benefiting opposite comedies on ABC, NBC and Fox; and recent entry Vegas (6.8/12). Vegas is similar to year-ago overnight levels for Unforgettable (which scored a 7.3/12 on 11/15/11). But the notably older skew for Vegas (a 1.7 rating/4 share among adults 18-49, according to the Live Plus Same Day data, in its most recent telecast, October 30) may not bode well for a second season renewal.
The live Dancing With the Stars Results Show on ABC finished a comfortable second in the overnights from 8-9 p.m., with a 9.1/14. And that, comparably, was 32 percent above competing The Voice on NBC (6.9/11). But The Voice will, of course, win the hour among adults 18-49 and it could lift the network to first overall for the evening in the demo.
The blatant observation in the 9 p.m. hour is too many sitcoms, with ABC, NBC and Fox vying for the same audience. NBC’s combination of Go On (#2: 4.1/ 6) and The New Normal (#2: 3.2/ 5) had the advantage, with retention for Go On out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of The Voice (7.0/11) at 59 percent. And Go On was on par with the year-ago overnights for former time period occupant The Biggest Loser. ABC was next care of Happy Endings (#3: 3.6/ 5) and Don’t Trust the B____ in Apartment 23 (#3: 2.9/ 5). But retention for Happy Endings out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of Dancing With the Stars (9.4/14) was an eyesore at just 38 percent. And the results among adults 18-49 are expected to be lacking for both alphabet net half-hours.
On Fox, New Girl (#4: 3.3/ 5) and recent entry The Mindy Project (#4: 2.2/ 4) were the lowest rated in the overnights. And New Girl is down by 34 percent from the year-ago evening (versus a 5.0/ 8 on 11/15/11). But the Zoey Dechanel half-hour did build from lackluster lead-in Ben and Kate (#4: 1.9/ 3 at 8:30 p.m.) by 74 percent. And the race to the finish line among adults 18-49 could fall in favor on New Girl. In a nutshell:
9:00 p.m. Overnights
Go On (NBC): 4.1/ 6, Happy Endings (ABC): 3.6/ 6, New Girl (Fox): 3.3/ 5
9:30 p.m. Overnights
The New Normal (NBC): 3.2/ 5, Don’t Trust the B____ in Apartment 23 (ABC): 2.9/ 5, The Mindy Project (Fox): 2.2/ 4
The moral of the story: Too many competing comedies in the 9 p.m. hour do not bode well for ABC, NBC and Fox. One of the three pairs needs to go.
Earlier in the evening on Fox was Raising Hope at a fourth-place 2.6/ 4, which dropped by 51 percent from the first half of former year-ago time period occupant Glee (5.3/ 8 on 11/15/11).
At 10 p.m., demo friendly Parenthood on NBC finished second behind Vegas on CBS in the overnights, with a 3.5/ 6. Third was soon-to-conclude Private Practice on ABC at a 3.1/ 5, which dropped from year-ago occupant Body of Proof (7.2/12 on 11/15/11) by a hefty 57 percent.
The CW capped off this second Tuesday in November with its low-rated combination of sophomore Hart of Dixie (#5: 1.2/ 2) and episode four of Emily Owens, M.D. (#5: 1.1/ 2), which dipped by 21 percent from failed year-ago occupant Ringer (1.4/ 2 on 11/15/11).

Again with his retention nonsense...
ReplyDeleteBoy that was confusing. But cutting through all the crap I do agree that there is to many 1/2 hours to watch even if you didn't like them all
ReplyDeleteignore the retention crap and you actually get some sense.
ReplyDeleteThere are too many comedies competing against each other in the 9pm hour. The Voice will win the 8pm hour in A18-49, New Girl will be the highest rated comedy of the night and NCIS:LA will win the 9pm hour. Vegas does skew really old.
Go On was down, but it still beat New Girl in 18-49. Surprising and awesome!
ReplyDeleteAnd NCIS is down, too, but their ratings are always awesome, so whatever.
NCIS ratings were depleted last night, NCIS: LA almost beat it!
ReplyDeleteI agree about Vegas, but surely they can afford to give it a second season. Older people also watch TV.
ReplyDeleteHa! I guess it depends on what you consider 'older' :)
ReplyDeleteThe problem is that CBS already has a handful of old-skewing, low demo dramas:
ReplyDeleteCSI: NY
CSI
The Good Wife
The Mentalist
Blue Bloods
For a network that desperately wants to lure younger viewers they can only afford to support so many of these shows.
I don't know what Berman is smoking but Hart of Dixie scored a season high last night. It's definitely not in the "loser" category but this guy's ratings insights should be.
ReplyDeletewell a 0.7 as a season high is hardly anything to brag about so he has a point, then again for the CW its good and will probably see it get a 3rd season if it holds steady for the rest of the season which I don't think it will but we shall see come spring.
ReplyDeleteOn the CW, for a show that usually muddles around between a .5 and a .6, it is something to hang one's hat on. HoD has been very slowly, almost incrementally, growing all season.
ReplyDeletehow many of the shows listed do you think will make it to next season?
ReplyDeletethere are plenty of shows on TV that older people watch, the problem is the lack of shows younger people actually want to watch especially when it comes to CBS.
ReplyDeleteNetworks are businesses not charities.
"The little inexpensive show that could"
ReplyDeletehahaaha
I'd guess at this point that all of the shows I listed except for CSI: NY will be renewed. Beyond that, I'm guessing that Vegas doesn't come back for season 2.
ReplyDeleteNew Girl got beaten in the demo :(
ReplyDeletePoor Private Practice.
Oh, No! The Voice!! It's down!! D:
ReplyDeleteI'm surprise with HoD's & Emily Owens' Ratings. It's up! Or maybe it's their highest rating for this season? Well... I hope tonight's ratings for CW will up too
I know! What I hate about this guy is that his comments don't have any context. It's either 9 mil viewers and 5.6 rating of you're a loser!
ReplyDeleteFor the CW, for HoD that is EXCELLENT!
those abc ratings are good for Caslte ;)
