-Ratings Breakdown:
There was nothing unusual to report on this eighth Monday of the current TV season, with diluted ABC still tops in the overnights and NBC poised for victory among adults 18-49 thanks to The Voice. Excluding year-to-year growth of a stellar 121 percent for NBC, the pattern elsewhere was double-digit erosion.
Dancing With the Stars on ABC topped the night in the overnights with a 10.1 rating/11 share from 8-10 p.m., which was 22 percent below the 13.0/19 on the year-ago evening. Tom Bergeron and company held a 44 percent advantage over aforementioned The Voice on NBC (7.0/11 from 8-10 p.m.). But The Voice owns the block among adults 18-49 (and other key demos), and the growth from year-ago occupant The Sing Off (2.7/ 4 on 11/14/11) was a whopping 159 percent.
Castle on ABC dominated the 10 p.m. hour in the overnights, with a 6.9/12. But third-place Revolution on NBC (4.6/ 8) is the show to beat among adults 18-49 thanks to the lead-in support from The Voice. Retention for Castle out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of Dancing With the Stars (10.2/15) was 68 percent. And the retention for Revolution out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of The Voice (6.7/10) was 69 percent.
Over at CBS, facing The Voice remains costly with the two-hour comedy block dipping by 32 percent, on average, from one year earlier. How I Met Your Mother opened with a 5.4/ 8 (#3) at 8 p.m., which was a less significant 18 percent below the 6.6/10 one year earlier. But the sore spot is recent entry Partners, which dipped to a fourth-place 3.8/ 6 at 8:30 p.m. And that was, comparably, was 30 percent below lead-in How I Met Your Mother and 49 percent behind year-ago occupant 2 Broke Girls (7.5/11 on 11/14/11). Chances are CBS will make a decision on the future of Partners this week.
At 9 p.m., 2 Broke Girls (which truly pushed the envelope last night) perked up to a 6.1/ 9 (#3) at 9 p.m. And that built from lead-in Partners by a hefty 61 percent. But minus The Voice in the competitive mix last year, former time period occupant Two and a Half Men was considerably stronger at a 9.5/14. Three-year-old Mike & Molly (#3: 5.9/ 9 at 9:30 p.m.) remains perfectly compatible out of 2 Broke Girls, while Hawaii Five-O finished second behind Castle at 10 p.m. with a 5.5/ 9. Year-to-year, Hawaii Five-O slipped by 27 percent.
Elsewhere, tired Bones on Fox scored a 4.5/ 7 (#4) from 8-9 p.m., which was six percent below failed year-ago occupant Terra Nova (4.8/ 7 on 11/14/11). And sure-to-be axed The Mob Doctor followed with a series-low 2.2/ 3 at 9 p.m., which was 54 percent below year-ago occupant House (4.8/ 7 on 11/14/11). The CW barely registered, meanwhile, with its combination of 90210 (#5: 1.0/ 1) and Gossip Girl (#5: 0.8/ 1). As a reminder, midseason Fox drama The Following with Kevin Bacon debuts in the Monday 9 p.m. hour on January 21. And The Carrie Diaries, the prequel to Sex and the City, bows in the Monday 8 p.m. hour on The CW on January 14.

I'm confused, does this mean that Revolution recovered from last week in the demo?
ReplyDeleteI don't get Revolution,it says Revolution is the one to beat, but in the same breath it says Castle is the one to beat. Which is it?
ReplyDeleteWe won't know for sure until the early demo overnight numbers come out in about 2 hrs.
ReplyDeleteWhere did it say that "Castle is the one to beat"? I could not see that in the article.
ReplyDeleteI read it twice saying it was dominate, but i just read it again and sure enough it said Revolution was the one to beat..I think i need to wake up,thanks Andy! :P
ReplyDeleteHa lol. Another pot of coffee :) I think the dominate means in terms of Total viewers but that Revolution is the leader in the important 18-49 Demographic
ReplyDeleteYes,your right it does mean that. And i think i'm in need a a BIG pot of coffe! :)
ReplyDeleteAlthough I'm still confused about the numbers, it doesn't look good for Bones. :( Which sucks because it was a really good episode, imo.
ReplyDeleteWe won't have the actual numbers in for about 90 mins. We should wait till we fill out the table before we can make any real accurate analysis about how it did.
ReplyDeleteYou can see Bones previous ratings in our Episode Database here

DWTS it's not a good lead for Castle, just sayin'... Love Castle and I'm not worried but something is happening!! Europeans can't do nothing about ratings, unfortunately!
ReplyDeleteOkay, thanks. Btw, "Method" (8x05) isn't even listed on there.
ReplyDeleteOpps, try now :) For some reason I accidently set it to "unpublished" lol
ReplyDeleteAgree, I´m european too and wish I could do something about it:) The point is, Castle leads in number of viewers, but apparently they are at the wrong age (that´s another thing I´ll never understand, why it´s so important to be in 18-49 slot)...
ReplyDeletesome networks (cable especially) look for other demos like 25-54 and also The CW, although the 18-49 is very important, also favors adults 18-34 and women 18-34
ReplyDeleteMaria, the 18-49 age group is what the marketers use when generating Advertisment revenue. The Advertistment revenue pays for the show to be on air. Total viewers is pretty much irrelevant, the only rating that the money men look at is the 18-49 rating.
ReplyDeleteOn Mark Berman's site it's half hours were 2.8/2.4 so I think it got a 2.6 :(
ReplyDeleteI am so dissapointed at Revolution :(
ReplyDelete@crimtv:disqus Don't worry too much yet about Revolution. It's still NBC's top rated scripted show.
ReplyDeleteThank you for clearing it up to me:) It´s different from my country, in here the higher the number of viewers, the higher the ranking (or at least that´s how the shows appear in the lists)...
ReplyDeleteYep, I'm in the UK and our ratings are a little different as well :) Took me a while to understand the USA ratings system :)
ReplyDeleteyeah, that's the only thing that is keeping me happy, also isn't it this season's highest average rated NEW series?
ReplyDeleteCastle's demo will be adjusted down for 0.1-0.3 due to Monday Night Football game that was simulcast on the ABC affiliates in Kansas City and Pittsburgh.
ReplyDeleteI believe so yes. It's hard to compare with The CW which Arrow is on and has a relatively high rating for that network. But yes it's average 18-49 is the highest for any new show this season
ReplyDeleteI'm really disappointed by H50 this season. Ratings are dropping like there's no tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteAre the advertisers thinking that people over 49 do not have disposable income?
ReplyDeleteNo, not at all. Just not as much.
ReplyDeleteI hope they are "into" books... as the Nikki Heat collection is, I think, a product that sells good...:)
ReplyDeleteits been steady pretty much all season and is in no danger of cancellation
ReplyDeletethe opposite in fact, people over the age of 49 tend to have more disposable income therefore their buying ability is already something the advertisers have and can relay on where as those of age 18-49 have less disposable income therefore their buying power/money is harder to get, their money is essentially harder to get. So advertisers have to strive harder to get that money therefore its more important.
ReplyDeleteWow Mike and Molly is doing awesome again!
ReplyDeleteI know, but compared to last season, they are not that great :/
ReplyDeleteI hope Revolution goes back to 3.0 or at least a 2.9 before the hiatus. The show is just starting to get really good, the ratings need to go up a bit and stay steady!
