  1. I loved it! The boys fighting over the phone was hilarious. I like Amelia, but I still don't think something's right there with that situation.

And loved Sam's anger at the end there! Whoa.

  2. I won't bother to comment on the strangeness of this basically being a Benny-centric episode, since I'm sure it'll be rampant below. Instead, I'll comment on how I really love the contrast between Dean's and Sam's flashbacks. Sam's see to be made up of bright colors and sunlight, while Dena's are so much darker and grittier. I'm sure that was deliberate, but still. I appreciate it.

I always like to see Dean's protective side come out, too. He's fiercely loyal to those close to him, and he seems so determined to get Cas out of purgatory right now. It was kind of cool to see Sam be the "parent" tonight, chewing him out for going on a hunt alone (or so he thought). And seeing Benny save Cas in purgatory was certainly unexpected.

My favorite quote of the episode had to go to Amelia: "I knew there was something off about you, with your army/navy and your sideburns..." I just about died laughing haha

All in all, I'm just glad we got back to normal tonight... well sort of. Last week was rough for me. It's just too bad there's so much animosity between Sam and Dean right now. That needs to be fixed pronto.

  3. Great episode for me :) I was expecting like one 10 seconds clip for Sam and Amelia, glad that we had more. Starting to understand the connection between her and Sam, they were in the same situation , I feel for both of them

  4. xD I LOVED the phone fight, especially Dean putting down the phone and let Sam's screaming at him as a trap

  5. ''Sam's seem to be made up of bright colors and sunlight, while Dean's are so much darker and grittier. I'm sure that was deliberate, but still. I appreciate it.''

In an interview they talked about wanting to do contrast, that there's not green leaves or whatever in purgatory

  6. I tip my hat to Jared's acting for this particular episode. Sam's silent fury at the end of the show gave me the chills. Dang I had no idea Jared could muster such a stink eye.

    ReplyDelete
  7. So many things to love about this episode! Was great from start to finish :-) I love the spice added by the newer characters.

    ReplyDelete
  8. We certainly learned a lot about Benny's backstory and motivations. I hope Sam gets the same consideration from the writers.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I agree... I got the chills as well. He had the silent smolder going on, and it's talent when you can convey that with just a look.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Got it... thanks! And that was another great quote hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  11. That was pretty good. They seem to have established off screen that Benny was basically a good guy before he was killed so Dean's ability to tell good monsters from bad ones is still doing it's thing. I do wish that Ty Olsson had mumbled a bit less. I really felt like I was missing a lot of his dialog between the mumbling and the accent.

The Amelia flashbacks were okay. I guess I shouldn't expect much more on that front. The previews looked intense.

  12. I loved it. It was very moving to me. And the fight scenes were so fun - some of the best of the whole series! More please! But I wish they had LONGER FLASHBACKS because they really are helping to explain the state of mind of both brothers.

I wish they would do an eposode of mainly Sam, & Dean flashbacks. I finally got a feel for Amelia tonight, and in flashbacks, you can feel that Sam did miss Dean and grieve for him - something the present day writing is not making clear. As for Purgatory, I could watch a whole season of that! Fantastic!

This story made me certain now that Benny isn't a Ruby [a betrayer], but rather a way for Carver to keep the monster POV he had in Being Human. I think Benny is what he seems to be, but I think it's going to end tragically. When, is a matter of how long Carver wants to write from the monster POV, which is a long time I suspect.
The Sam meeting with Benny was great, but frustrating, because I so desperately wanted them to talk or more of something. I just hope the brothers will get it all out next week, and not whine and brood for eons, like in other years. Carver promised maturity, and I hope they duke it out in one episode, come clean with each other about eveything, and just get on with it.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yes, in flashback mode, I see exactly what Sam's state of mind and heart were. They need many more and longer fladhbacks of both brothers for us to understand them now.

    ReplyDelete
  14. First an episode where Sam and Dean are only in it for 3 minutes, and now a Benny-centric episode guest-starring Dean with an irrelevant Sam.

Benny's story was interesting, but the episode as a whole bored me. Zero tension.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Great storytelling! Cas' reference to himself as a Seraph? Someone help me out here. Not real familiar with religion. Does that mean he got promoted again?

The Cas/Benny.Dean triangle is coming together nicely. Would have liked more of a follow up after Benny asked why Dean didn't just pick any culvert to drop him into. Liking wavy-haired angry girl even less. Would love for Riot to pee on her leg.

Also wondering if Kevin will string them around until he needs them. Or if he's been "turned" by the darkside.

Gotta re-watch as stream was somewhat choppy.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Excellent episode. I was glad to see Benny was truly someone who didn't want to be a monster. It was a woman who steered him back to his lost humanity, and it was the same woman who cemented it. It's good to see Dean's instincts about who is really good or evil are still intact. Dean has become quite the killing machine. He dispatched the vamps like they were nothing. I'm sure surviving a year in Purgatory is better than any boot camp. Loved to see him in such control of a situation.

The phone conversation between Dean and Sam was cool. Sam, not understanding who his brother really is anymore, still trying to hold him to rules from the past. Dean can hunt alone obviously -- whether he wants to or not is going to be the question.

I liked these flashbacks of Sam's better than the golden tinted dreamy ones. This Amelia is still kind of bitchy, but it seems she has a reason. Maybe that's what keeps Sam from hunting, the connection they make. But I have to believe it's more than that. You don't just forget about your only family because someone else is hurting, too.

So Dean kept Benny a secret. I can understand that. As far as he knew, they were going their separate ways. He had no reason to think he was going to see him again, and he knew from everything learned in Purgatory that Benny wasn't a threat. Sam won't trust Dean's judgement, but he will eventually accept it when Benny proves himself. Dean doesn't usually make mistakes, and Sam doesn't usually accept things without proof. Maybe it's the lawyer in him?

The crap will hit the fan and I'm sure both brothers will come out the other end with a better understanding of the new men they've become. The season is really heating up and I'm looking forward to more!

    ReplyDelete
  17. ''Sam won't trust Dean's judgement, but he will eventually accept it when Benny proves himself. Dean doesn't usually make mistakes, and Sam doesn't usually accept things without proof. Maybe it's the lawyer in him?''

I hope that one day Sam will be friend with Benny :) Could be fun having everyone getting along

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm starting to really like Benny. He's a soulful charming fellow and his addition has actually made the lack of our favorite characters suck a little bit less. I mean they killed off EVERYONE...gotta build up the friends list at some point again, right?

I am sort've stuck in the middle of a rock and a hard place though because while I've been really happy to see Sam's year away from hunting (and in this episode how they showed his lack of anyone holding him down in his life--in the sense that he had NO ONE left to be around-- and relayed that to Amelia) but Amelia just kind've annoyed the crap out of me.

Otherwise, seeing him take interest in whatever he could do to pass the time until he would know what was the next step in his life was nice. I am hoping they make her more palatable in the next episode or two...

I have seen a lot of complaints about how Dean or Benny-centric this season has been, and while I would agree it's been more on that side, I've enjoyed the sparse Sam flashbacks and his newfound candor when dealing with jittery, Primal Dean fresh from monster pit.

I am also liking the Purgatory flashbacks. The leviathan attack at the end was really well-done and fun to watch. If they can keep it like this, then I'm in for the ride, cause I like it.

However, the commercial had Dean saying "You left me to die for a girl?" WTF writers, please...Let's keep this rolling along. I am tired of angst.

    ReplyDelete
  19. AWESOME, let me say that again..AWESOME. So glad to see my show back and I will tell y'all now, when Benny dies, I will cry. I like him. Was screaming at the TV when it ended..wanted to see that talk between Sam and Dean. Loved the snark and already have my favorite quote.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I loved it all, but I was a little sad the blood sipping scene in the Impala was cut. Also some of the set pics weren't in the episode, like when Dean first sees Benny and opens the blood cooler. Unless my station cut it off - there's a ton of commercials this season.
Lately I've noticed how promo scenes aren't always in the episode itself, and that sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Seraph in this link..I did not know what they were either.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seraph

    ReplyDelete
  22. Did you hear Cas refer to himself as a Seraph when in Purgatory? That would put him in the same (cl)ass as Zachariah. I wonder if that would have any strange effects?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yep, very possible your station cut it off to shove more commercials in. It's happened to me before.

    ReplyDelete
  24. And I missed any "Dean on the beach" scene from that comment by Ben Edlund at Comic Con. I really would have loved Dean's reaction to an actual beach. Really a shame they didn't pull off whatever that idea was.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Loved this episode.

Great flashbacks. I am glad they finally showed why Sam ended up with Amelia- they were kind of going through similar things- both alone with no idea what to do with themselves because of it.

And in Purgatory it was great seeing how loyal Dean is to his friends. Cas and Benny were interesting to see interacting. Complicated there. They both agreed that it was safer without Cas, but Benny ended up saving him despite wanting to leave him behind.

Benny being amused over Cas's lack of understanding of references. lol Like Cas didn't have enough of Dean's teasing.

I like Benny. Felt bad for him with his girlfriend. She's the one that pulled him back to his humanity, and it's good to see he's committed to do as he said he would and drink donated blood. (I was also glad that in Purgatory, Dean questioned Benny's statement that he would do so- it proves it took time for Dean to really trust him).

Sam and Dean's argument over the phone was so funny with Dean telling him not to speak out loud and using Sam's voice to lure the vampires into a trap. XD

The ending....holy macro, Sam is so pissed. All hell's going to break loose next episode.

(Hopefully this means the air will finally be cleaned between the brothers- I'm sick of the bickering.)

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm not sure who makes the promos but it seems the ones on CW are very bad about showing something in the promo that does not show up in the ep. Or maybe it is because I usually watch the ones on CW and not anyone else. lol

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yeah, I was wondering what he meant by that. He was clearly not high on the food chain when the seals were being broken, Anna was above him as well as Zachariah. Maybe he was 'promoted' when all the angels were slaughtered? Promote from within kind of thing? :) Or maybe he was of an upper echelon all along and we just never knew it? It was an interesting thing to say. I assumed at the time it was a throw away line just because he was like a beacon to all the monster souls, but I am wondering if it meant more.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It is usual like to Dean, Sam and Cas but I am liking it to Benny also ..... OMG! My feelings are in conflict now after this episode. ^^

    ReplyDelete
  29. Loved it. Thought it was a truly amazing episode. So much better then the last two.
Love Benny, love Cas, love Dean, love Sam. Glad to see more Sam flashbacks, but still can't stand his girl.

Some parts in this /were/ a bit cheesy. Didn't like the father vamp. Some of their speech seemed .. way too soapopera-ish. But it was overall a very good episode.

And may I say.. Sam looks /SO/ pissed. Oh man.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Why do you think he's going ot die? Other then spn liking to kill /all/ of its characters at one point or another? I really have grown to like Benny, and love what he adds to the playing field, and..seriously tired of the boys losing EVERYONE.

    ReplyDelete
  31. ..this episode was awesome we began to know how benny is like a vampire and the rules he believes and follow,.,the bromance he and castiel began to uinfold,.,dean trying to keep the peace between two different peoples..OK..about the flashbacks..dean are more natural and credible..sam...SUCKS.it feel very force and choreograph

    ReplyDelete
  32. I got the blood sipping in the car scene and Dean opening the blood cooler, so it was something from your station not the show.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I remember Zachariah being a Seraph and from the definition it looks like they were in a higher (closer to god) class of angel. Maybe he's worth more as a kill on the Purgatory Tote Board.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Well I think I'll be in the minority again this week. I'm sick of the guys being apart, or barely in the episode, or stuck with a third wheel. Good Lord I miss the days of the Sam and Dean Winchester road show. That's all I want. Not sure, after two weeks of blah, if I can get at all excited that Garth is coming back next week. Again.

As for tonight's episode, the only part I found myself interested in and compelled to watch were Sam's flashbacks. I found Benny and Dean's scenes ridiculously boring. Too much monologueing. I think Ben Edlund is a talented writer, but I haven't liked any of his episodes over the last two seasons.

So - overall, this one was OK for me. Next week better hook me because I'm actually losing interest in watching.

    ReplyDelete
  35. After his death in Season 5 Cas mentioned something to Dean about being more powerful, I believe God gave him more power when he came back, so he became a Seraph.

Explains how he was able to even become a leader in Heaven and start a civil war against Raphael. At the same time Seraphs aren't as powerful as archangels, so that is why his side was losing until he downed the souls.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'll buy that. Or he just meant it as a generic word for angels like Kleenex is for tissues. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. He wasn't always in the same class as Zach. In Swan Song 5x22, God brought him back "improved".

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think we're being misdirected by the promo for next week. Sam hits Dean, but then we see Dean with black goo coming from his ear. (or was that just me?) Maybe the Dean with them is a Leviathan Dean? Did anyone else notice that?

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm tired too of all the deaths, but yeah, some of us just start to assume new characters will die cause 99.5% of Dean and Sam's friends have.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Vampirates. :) That gets funnier every time I hear it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I saw the CW promo, yeah, they put a lot of scenes that end up being cut out.

    This being one of them:

Dean says "Do we really have to that right now?" while Benny's sucking up the blood. lol

I hate that the CW does that (like Sam's love scene with that girl at the bar in season 5 episode 3 FTBYAM). Cause sometimes you look forward to certain scenes then they are cut out!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Maybe Ben wasn't being serious.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Cas got promoted in Season 5 after God brought him back a second time.

    ReplyDelete
  44. lol

Seraph is a level of angels in real religion.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I don't think it was Leviathan blood, but ectoplasm, considering the synopsis of the episode.

    ReplyDelete
  46. He's the only angel in Purgatory, the souls have a bone to pick with him for holding them captive in him, and his true form is like a beacon to the monsters in Purgatory...

Yeah. Why wouldn't they go after him? They're constantly on the hunt in the first place, and then they have reasons to go after Cas on top of that/can't resist going after a beacon of light.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Oh ectoplasm... so the ghost makes Dean crazy?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Well, there go the six wings and four faces; one of which was a lion!

    ReplyDelete
  49. He should be pretty easy prey with the way the angels got taken out on Earth.

Have to say I'm a wee bit disappointed at how easily Kevin has stayed ahead of the brothers. They can whack two horsemen with no problem but can't find the AP Asian kid and his mom.

    ReplyDelete
  50. So random- I was thinking of how Dean a human, Cas an angel, and Benny a vampire, are quite a trio and this popped into my head:

"An angel, a human, and a vampire walked into a bar"...

I need to go to bed now lol

    ReplyDelete
  51. Pretty good episode, still annoyed by the brother's drama and the flashbacks but at least the flashbacks were interesting this time. Still Cas > Benny.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Makes me think of Ed Wood.

    ReplyDelete
  53. You're dead on about the Sam flashbacks. Do you think it is that way because Dean's flashbacks are mostly violent, thus easier to do and Sam's are emotional?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Waiting for Tor Johnson to peek around a tree in Purgatory.

    ReplyDelete
  55. There a book called Vampirates on Amazon I noticed a while back, not a new concept from BE but still a cool one

    ReplyDelete
  56. Awesome episode for me. Good tension between Sam and Dean at the end. I love Amelia, she is so pretty. I start to like Benny after know more his story.

    ReplyDelete
  57. or Benny could end up giving in to his natural primal insticts eventually proving Dean was wrong and Sam will have yo kill Benny after all. Just because Benny seems all sweetness and like right now doesnt mean he'll stay that way? I think the writers are being far to obvious in the 'Dean is right to trust a monster, Sam is wrong' department at the moment, maybe they're realoing in the audiences trust so they can drop one hell of a bomb shell on them later on in the season. I'm sticking by my original thoughts that Benny will slip up eventually.

    ReplyDelete
  58. What's with all the flashbacks? Sam stares at an airconditioer and has a flashback. Sam stares at an ice box and has a flashback. How can he make it through the day with all those flashbacks?
    Weak writing.

    ReplyDelete
  59. ..I don’t like it because was a excuse for sam .to leave everything even try to find his brother see all that apple pie life that he suggest dean and don’t work out in a practical way in sam loves life ALWAYS something DARK and EVIL follow him and cost him PAIN AND SUFFER at the end in the next episode finally those two point of view collide & the referee is GARTH..amazing

    ReplyDelete
  60. Was it me, or was that a vampire head that flew across the hallway when Dean was off camera fighting them? I thought that was hilarious!

    ReplyDelete
  61. I noticed the mumbling too. I love his accent and whole character thing, but he is a bit hard to hear at times.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Don't trust the CW promos, they lie a lot. lol

I am still not becoming a fan of Amelia, but looking forward to more flashbacks for Sam. This ep really showed that Sam and Amelia were both damaged and could relate.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Another solid ep for me. My only complaint would be a bit too much Benny, but it did go a long way in explaining his story.

I enjoyed how Handy-Man Sam again showed how drastically different his and Dean's year were.

The other thing I noticed...when Benny first talked about his lady friend (sorry, can't remember her name), it sort of paralleled Sam/Amelia. Sort of like I found this thing...and it helped make the past and the pain of what I am just melt away. It gave both of them permission to live a bit of normalcy. So, a small bit of connection between the Benny and the Sam story lines. Don't know if that'll mean anything as the season goes on, but it was interesting nonetheless.

Sam's worry/frustration/anger with Dean in this ep was excellent. Some of Jared's best work as far a conveying all those emotion with very few words. I was talking about this last week when a friend, although it was for a different show....about how much I enjoy when an actor can express himself without having to babble out a bunch of dialogue. Just the look in the eyes or the set of the jaw... Jared was excellent with that in 8.5.

    ReplyDelete
  64. there were moments of a real supernatural episode this time. It had some funny stuff and a few moments. but i still struggle with the crazy flashbacks

    ReplyDelete
  65. Not all Seraphs look the same, I'm sure, if that's what you mean, as that was Zach's.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Well to be fair, the horsemen weren't trying to run from them.

    ReplyDelete
  67. WOW!!!!Best episode of the season so far!!!!Loved the Purgatory sequence, especially Dean's fighting skills.I missed Cas!!!But what really caught my attention was Sam's story with Amelia and his fury with Dean!!!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I am just sad after this episode. This was the first one that I missed
live since I started watching the show in 2008. I was at work and
anxious to get to my Mom's (we always get together for the show)... but
then I even kind of forgot it was on. I knew it was going to be
Purgatory heavy, but I never knew it was going to be Benny heavy. After watching it, my hopes for this season just fizzled and died. Since Benny is being portrayed as a "good guy", that means Sam is now
the bad guy in Dean's life... Again.

    The brother relationship
between between Sam and Dean is practically non-existent this season. We
see Carver and the J's explaining that brothers fight. Yep. That is
true. However, up until now I "Knew" fighting was killing both of them.
Now, it seems to be annoying Dean and an inconvenience to Sam.

    Why
did Sam get out of hunting? According to him, he told poor Kevin that
he just had to clear his head. Except for some panic after hitting
"dog", Sam seems to be over the devastation of losing his brother. The
Trickster couldn't get Sam to give up no matter what he did... but the
the magical season 8, Sam gives up in the blink of an eye.

    I hate
what they are doing to Sam and I hate that Dean gets another brother...
again. After Castiel gets back, Dean will be surrounded by jealous
brothers that can all fight over him for the best of reasons. They are
all worried about Dean... except Sam. Sam will be fighting over Dean
because of some self-righteous, jealous, monster hating, phobic reason.
Because that is what the show has done to Sam. He will want out of
hunting, but won't want to leave Dean with anybody else because of some
horrible reason... but maybe he can fix the air conditioner and feel like he has done something important with his life.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I really hope you're right about this, because it's a much more interesting road to travel. If Benny ends up just being what he seems on the surface, I'll be disappointed.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I couldn't watch the entire episode because the CW went out in my area. I saw the beginning nd very end.
I have to say, I don't care one lick about Sam's time with Amelia. They could have cut out all his flashbacks and spend more time in purgatory.
(to be fair- I didn't care about Dean's time with Lisa either).
Saw the promos for next week and can't wait for Dean and Sam to have it out! Once they get their issues out in the open they can begin to deal with them.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I think Benny will end up falling off the wagon and Dean or Sam will have to kill him. In SPN they have shown monsters always return to killing.
I also think when Cas returns we will find out more about Benny...possibly something sinister.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I usually watch each ep several times and at least once with closed caption on, just to make sure I have not missed anything, but saying that I have not had a problem understanding Benny, maybe because I am in TX and used to hearing people talk like he does.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Yes, I loved it. This is the Sam from the earlier seasons. Worried this much about his brother... made me happy.....

    ReplyDelete
  74. Now that's some good writing and directing! Best episode of this season so far. I don't know how they managed to make all those flashbacks work, but they did. The rest of it was like a MOTW vampire episode but with a recurring character. I'm really starting to like Benny.

    ReplyDelete
  75. This episode is what Supernatural is all about. I loved the fighting over the phone. Sam's anger was frightening. Jared was tremendous here. Benny seems like a good guy, but Sam sure caught on quick on what he was. I could see his hand releasing a weapon and the look on Dean's face and the slight motion for no was well done. Benny noting immediately that he was Dean's secret and telling them they need to talk? Whoa. They do. The Purgatory scenes of the three fighting the Leviathans was good. Benny saving Cas after he didn't want him involved was great. There was nothing not to like in this.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I don't mind his mumbling or his accent, and I'm not even from an English speaking country. But I guess I'm used to really concentrating on what they're saying, because otherwise I'd probably miss half of the dialogue...

    ReplyDelete
  77. And they weren't dragging their mom along with them, either!! (I just realized how stupid what I just typed sounds!)

    ReplyDelete
  78. You nailed it with your last paragraph. Now if all the Sam fans could read it and stop complaining about face time or storyline all will be well. It isn't the amount of time you get on screen, it is what you do with it!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Please stop with labeling one group of fans. I seem to remember Cas fans being unhappy last year when Cas was killed off, even though Cas had a very good centric episode in the premiere. And there has been plenty of complaining in the fandom over the past few years from Dean fans who would repeat over and over again Dean never gets a real story.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I only watched about a third of the episode (was on a business call and was channel flipping after that), but I have to agree about the monologuing. Everything was laid on pretty thick with the Benny/bad buy sire/Dean scenes. The evil monologuing villian, the tragic hero (Benny), and the determined savior (Dean).

    ReplyDelete
  81. You are so right, as much as I liked dual Deans in The End and hippie Cas, what grabs be every time is Lucifer/Sam. Jared was spell binding in that scene and he was so good at the end of Blood Brothers.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Finally the Supernatural I love was back! last week was painful. This was a kick ass episode with a good hunt, great character development, and finally some informative flashback! Sam at the end was scary and funny. Love the subtle looks they gave each other until Benny left and Sam was like @__@ If looks could kill, Sammy!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Really want to hear the rest of that joke. :)

    ReplyDelete
  84. Oooo! Ectoplasm! Interesting! I like that. :) Someone else said it was a ear mic. Why would Dean be wearing an ear mic? Did he start working at a telemarketing firm?

    ReplyDelete
  85. You saw it right. :) Vamp heads rollin'. I loved it!!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Maybe he only has 4 wings and 2 faces... the other one being a somewhat confused puppy?

    ReplyDelete
  87. And that quote would be....?

    ReplyDelete
  88. Yeah, Ameiia is not very likable at this point. I have no idea why Sam is even remotely interested, but hey, whatever floats his boat. Maybe he enjoys a challenge? I'm just hoping that there is something more to his leaving hunting and not searching for Dean than just her. Because she doesn't seem worth giving up everything you've ever known for at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I really hope not. Dean finds it hard enough to trust people as it is. If Benny abuses his trust, it will kill him.

  90. At the first when Sam and Dean were yelling, and Dean asked Sam what word are you having a problem with?? and later Did you have a stroke? I have watched the ep 3 times and have laughed each time..so much snark..love it.

  91. just spotted a cool ratings related tidbit. Supernatural was the only show last night whose ratings increased over their previous weeks' rating.

  92. My biggest hope is that Benny is not a Ruby character. Too much of that already. In all honesty, I hope Benny goes to find his own non-human-killing place in the world and comes in every once in awhile when the brothers need an army or have AlphaVamp questions. I like the character and don't need anymore than that. I'm good if Amelia goes the same way, a person they occasionally use when they need prescriptions or doctoring beyond the normal.

  93. I saw the scene with Benny sucking blood in the Impala as well as that quote on the St. Louis station.

  94. Loved it but I concede that I was ready to love anything that came after last week's episode. On third rewatch I see areas I don't care for and some issues I didn't while riding the high of no love triangles but overall I still think it's the best episode so far. However I could have done without the Benny and his now vampire love the instant it was hinted at. What's up with the writer's suddenly using Twilight for their inspiration? In the end I am intrigued by Benny and I love how it was far less emotional, Dean and Sam wise, than Jeremy led us to believe. There were some good action scenes. Still love the Purgatory flash backs. Wish Amelia didn't come off looking like a shrew every time though. I did like that Sam became a handy man and showed that he was definitely more than just book smart. He's smart all around. love that Dean remained loyal even in Purgatory. All in all, this is the Supernatural I began with. Now let's see if they can bring me Supernatural with more brothers and less side characters in the upcoming episodes.

  95. yep. I was disappointed...again. :-\

  96. I find it interesting that a lot of the people who were most vocal in commenting on this episode from the sneek peek do not bother in commenting on what they thought of the episode. There was some vitirol flying around about Dean and Sam and the things they were doing and people were assuming things, but they have not commented on if they actually liked the episode or not. I think this is a pity.

  97. started off like an episode of the Bickersons...

i hesitate to admit.... I laughed at VamPirates. "It's like the 3rd thing you think of."

I like Benny. Loved Ty Olsson Lousiana accent.... I loved getting a taste of his back story. Had the some issues with the way the guy who played Benny's maker...played that character. I had trouble believing this guy could have anyone believing he's god.

Loved seeing Dean's flashback. LIked Sam's lady love in this episode...it was nice finally getting to know that character.

  98. the "Do we really have to do that right now?" bit was in my aired version. I was about to wonder out loud if the affiliate snipped a bit for commercials but it was after some pertinent dialog so I figure that guess is wrong.

  99. I hear you, this is exactly how I feel!!!

Throughout the episode I was bored, and I did not pay attention to the talks Benny had with Dean in the impala, or Benny had with this older vampire (was he even?) or Benny had with this woman, I just don't feel the urgence to understand it all. I could have fast forward but I watched it nonetheless.

I agree to that part they let Sam doesn't look for Dean (or telling the story like he didn't look) to give Dean a reason (an understandable reason) to chose Benny over Sam, and we all will understand deeply Dean's choice.
We understand every bit of Dean why he is the way he is, we get a thick exploring of Benny, and in this even Castiel and Bennys dynamic intertwined with Dean's is giving Dean a big spotlight to his time while in purgatory and his relationships with others.

I can relate to the Sam from now (without the whole FB to Amelia, I think they are just to weird and ridiculous) But Sam in the flasbacks is not Sam for me, although I can enjoy a handsome man bonding with a girl and having a dog, but the scenes (for me) are not flashed out and beg only further questions.

At this time I would have thought Sam shouldn't be a mystery anymore and what they show me is again Sam the mystery while showing me a whole different Sam I can#t draw the dots from earlier Sam to this FB Sam. I can't relate to the FB Sam can only think wow Jared is a good looking guy and this is to little for me for this show about 2 brothers.

I remember right now RS saying that Sam had the emotional brunt of the storyline in S7 and it would be enough (!!!!!!!!) that was my first big neon sign that we wouldn't get to see any more deepness or deeper exploring to Sam's character while his arc last year (and the year before) was hidden behind the walls (ha ha sarcasm) while the main POV character Dean gets the focus. It wasn't a focus which is only a smelling like roses Dean (IMO), but he still had the focus!

If they would have gone a whole different way --meaning showing Sam's time from the start with a grounding Sam POV and we all could see how Sam coped after Dean vanished and those words were the part JC wanted to have for Sam (!!!!you are truly on your own!!!!!))
I would have loved to see Sam's grieving process after he tried to find Dean and then why he decided to finally let go. How he felt and what the reason was to go on like this. Then the mystery Dean could have arrived in his life back and Sam wold have his ground in the storyline. But they choose deliberately to not give this to Sam's character and now I feel like this is a whole new person I can't rely on anymore.

The FB of Sam are not real to me, like a dream, like he is someone else in the FB's. I just can't relate to this Sam in the FB. I can relate to the "now" version of Sam. And I blame the showrunner for this scenario totally, not JP. He can only give us what is written for Sam and its a hard stretch to the Sam from past seasons to this Sam in the FB's!

But about the episode as a whole, I zoned out almost the whole time.

I ONLY was on edge when Sam reacted to Dean's going. When they talked on the phone, and finally when Sam met Benny. That was for me the essence of the episode, but it was only some minutes and in the end. The rest was not worth to watch it again!

If I am shallow I watch the JP scenes again to see his handsomeness, that's all about

Benny and Dean come across as the better brothers now than Sam and Dean. I could just ask why are Sam and Dean even together in this, the scenes where they are together are full of resentment, anger, and what not!
    the show lost its foundation

  100. I wouldnt worry Benny will more than likely be safe as he is close to Dean and I highly doubt they would pull out the stops to make the audience sympahetic then pull 180 degree turn. Dean's trust in him will remain intact .

It is only Sam who's trust in the wrong people that causes grief and pain

  101. I agree and can't understand how someone can get so worked up over a promo or clip. Wait until the ep comes out to complain. ;) CW promos are usually so misleading, I take them all with a big shaker of salt.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I got that part also, but did not get the sucking on the straw at the bottom of the bag, which I thought was very funny in the promo. I do that with milk shakes. lol

  103. ..I saw this episode again perfect everything is back to normal we forget THE NIGHTMARE of the past EPISODE i feel the same..SAM FLASHBACK..yak,.yak,.his posture about dean attitude and reproach i am agree about dean explanation he live a apple pie life for one year and dean WAS ON SURVIVAL MOTION.sam dont try to hide the sky with one hand for me is hard to swallow that indifference ,dean follow his advice in swan song ..BUT..he continue to search for help him return HOME..and sam.he is out i cant do nothing to bring him back .need a vacation run with the wind...yeees..FULL OF CRAP POINT OF VIEW..BENNY.character is very refreshing remind me the female vampire castiel kill in the mommy.dearest episode.

    ReplyDelete
  104. OK, you make total sense. You feel that Sam had 3 or 4 minutes of excellent emotional depth... so Sam fans can stop complaining. Right.

    ReplyDelete
  105. You mention Sam's "new found candor". However, for 98% of last season he was bluntly honest. "It's a Denver scramble up here, but I kind of know my way around the plate". Every time Dean asked, Sam told him. One of the few times that Sam didn't mention what was going on with him (besides running out to "take care" of the Amy thing) he said he "can't complain" when Bobby asked him how things were going. He had rushed out to the garage to talk with Dean and/or Bobby about his dream, but he walked in on Dean saying he needed Sam to be alright. So, Sam kept it to himself.

    ReplyDelete
  106. No, I don't mean just bluntly honest. He's reacting to Dean differently. He seems like he isn't in the same place as he was before, and in a sense he's out of the realm of angst that we usually find both brothers in.

    ReplyDelete
  107. That's only because it is convenient for the plot.

    ReplyDelete
  108. He just hasn't done anything other than hunt, argue with dad and change schools. He probably doesn't have a good prom night story or spent an evening smashing mailboxes with friends. The backstory is dad hunted, Dean baby sat and Sam read. The older they got the more they hunted. Maybe it is the relationships with the other hunters that can be explored. There may even be a little out there from Stanford. It isn't going to be interesting because the little backstory he has made him what he is.

    ReplyDelete
  109. You're right. For as little there is in Sam's past, there is equally little in Dean's. I used the example of Sam in showing how so much can be conveyed with so little.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Exactly. It seems he's comfortable with "this is my feeling on the situation and I don't really care if you get worked up about it".

    ReplyDelete
  111. What are you even talking about? I think most times when Sam fans complain about lack of POV they are talking about getting Sam's perspective in the present storyline, not going back to his childhood - although the occasional flashbackbacks to the Winchesters' childhoods have been great, and we could have used more insight into Sam's relationship with John in the earlier seasons. There have been a lot of big developments with Sam over the past few years that have barely been explored in terms of looking at how those developments changed Sam's character. Examples of these are becoming Satan's vessel, his memories of how things played out in the cage, and the things he did without a soul. The latest is getting his perspective on the past year and why he's acting so different now.

    ReplyDelete
  112. So nothings happened to Sam recently that could of been explored .Nothing that might of impacted him now in the present . Nothing monumental in his life that should of been given credence.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Except for the usual being locked in the cage or dead the writer's missed that boat. It would be awkward to have Sam relaxing on the blanket with Amelia and have thoughts of the cage pop back into his head.

I got stuck in two conversations. My only point is it makes sense for Benny to have a backstory to help acclimate the character to the story. Sam's past other than the cage (please let me know if I'm forgetting something) is a repetition of moving around, changing schools, learning to hunt, arguing with dad and repeat. You could pick it up when he got to Stanford but where could you really go with it?

    ReplyDelete
  114. Please see my following post. I'm in the middle of two conversations and haven't presented either well. And I do agree about Satan's vessel and time in the cage. Especially time in the cage with little brother getting flayed alongside. I think they touched on Soulless Sam, albeit not very well.

They've just missed the boat. Like if they don't explain The comment Cas made in Purgatory about being a Seraph. Zachariah was a Seraph so I wonder if it somehow makes a difference. I'll wait and see.

Again, I apologize for mixing things up. I'll blame it on the pain meds again!!
