Gwen is really not okay. Really... I don't whether she's enchanted or just plain insane at this point, but I'm very worried about her. The scene where she killed this poor (!) stable boy just shocked me so much! And truthfully she seems much better at her new role than Morgana in S3. And that's SCARY.
Merlin was making such a great impression on us tonight. Brilliant deductive work, amazing spells and Emrys! Oh, how much I love Old Emrys! He's like my new favorite character on the show! I could not stop laughing in his scenes! Have to rewatch them! And the end where Merlin saves Arthur and he's so terrified it didn't work. His tears were breaking my heart there. I also couldn't help but think how Arthur back in 1x04 also had to climb (in a very dangerous and scary place) to find a cure for Merlin. Aww, love these two! So, about Arthur, I'm so happy that he didn't even for a second consider Merlin could be guilty! Their scenes were really great! Just hate the fact that we finally got to see more of Arthur and Gwen and it was all fake! Damn!
The last scene just screamed WAR. I can't wait. I honestly hated this new Gwen today, so that makes me root for Merlin&Arthur even more (like that was even possible!).
Angel Coulby was great, despite of all the smirking she copied from Morgana, it was good to see her manipulate people, like her new best friend used to do.
But I guess we found now Agravaine 2.0, a lot of people thought it'd be Mordred, but it turn out to be Gwen, and the same story (Merlin knows, can't tell Arthur...), but I know it won't last long.
Leon giving that speech to Gwen was touching, and if she wasn't enchanted or whatever, she'd be a fantastic ruler.
I shouldn't be surprised by Colin Morgan performance by now, he was great as always. It bothers me that Gaius, of all people, doesn't trust Merlin's instincts, at first at least, he should know better.
Old Merlin was simply fun, and it was nice to see the cook again, I don't know why, but I like her.
And Arthur, yes, you're an idiot, you should know better too. But it's not his fault, it's the writters and their plot convenience.
But why did they have to kill Tyr so early? Still, it was nice to see John Bradley.
Next week's ep looks interesting, I can't believe they're only 6 more episodes to end. Time flies.
Well this just might have been the BEST Merlin episode to have ever aired, yet.
Evil Gwen is PERFECT. Guinevere has been pushed back into the background for quite some time and never really got character development, so this is first major time when A.Coulby gets to display a FULL range of her acting skills.
The Insane Scheming Gwen so far is amongst the most fascinating and well-executed ideas so far to ever grace this show. She can pretty much rival Morgana in terms of Villain-awesomeness.
Seriously, Gwen, STAY EVIL you are far more interesting and fascinating this way.
:) I love the episode, great actings all around. I laughed SO HARD at Old Emrys xD Love him
But I'm still wondering why the cook didn't confirm where Merlin was 'til after Arthur woke up....she was waiting for him to get hang or what?^^;; She could've told Gwen (not that Gwen would've listen, but the cook could've say later to Arthur that she told the Queen too and the Queen didn't too anything. It would've been really suspicious. And I have to say I was also a bit surprise that there was no knights seemed to think that Merlin could be innocent (unless it was off screen)...But since the knights left him in the cave in Episode 2, I shouldn't be surprise we didn't have a scene like that
Loved this episode! Colin was great as usual. Gwen is kind of scaring me right now with the whole killing Arthur thing. I liked two parts above all in the episode. The one part is of course when Emrys makes a reappearance. So hilarious! I also liked the end when Merlin and Gwen exchange a look that clearly says on Merlin's end "I know it's you.". I'm thinking that maybe Gwen will be herself again in a few episodes maybe because in episode 10 Morgana is searching for Emrys again so I'm thinking he breaks the spell or something. She hasn't really been looking for him all season so something must trigger her to go searching for him again. Just my theory. Gwen may not be herself, but Merlin does something as Emrys that Gwen sees or Morgana sees. I'm one of those people that kind of wants Morgana to find out that it's Merlin. I would want her to find out by Merlin using magic on her so I can see the look on her face. Great episode and I can't wait for next weeks!
Again, I enjoyed the episode as such. It was in many ways a typical Merlin episode: some drama, some laughs and it was very well done. Colin, it goes without saying, was as briliant as ever, particularly in the scene saving Arthur. It was really moving. I love evil Gwen and finally feel that Angel is getting material she can get stuck into.
But then, this was an episode that could have easily happened in season 3 or 4. It was the same old Merlin formula: an inside traitor tries to kill Arthur, Merlin's the only one figuring it out and saves Arthur despite a lot of complications.
Although it was nice to see Arthur acknowledging trust in Merlin in the end scene and we can feel that there has been change to their relationship I despair at the lack of moment in the overall storyarc. There are now only six episodes left, but the big issues seem to have been forgotten about: what happened to the creation of Albion? What happened to the Mordred story arc? What happeened to the '2 sides of the same coin' prophecy? After 5 seasons it is hard to imagine that all of this gets crammed into the little time there is left - but then who knows what the writers have up their sleeves?
Mandrake roots drive people insane and cause hallucinations. Exposing her to it again would most likely drive her even more crazy or just leave her catatonic.
Despite the contrivance of making Gwen evil, this was a fairly good episode...or would have been, if it hadn't been a repitition of what we have seen before. The ending was straight from the second part of the season 3 season start, the search for the traitor in Camelot has been done to death in season 4....and am I really suppose to believe that the knights would arrest Merlin on so flimsy evidence (there wasn't even evidence, just "he is always there")? And where the hell was Mordred in all this? He has magic too, after all....The only bright side was Merlin's detective work, he made the episode. Otherwise the show seems to be in an endless loop. I'm just waiting for Camelot getting attacked/taken over.
Morgana was exposing her to it, then being nice, exposing her again and being nice again... almost like brainwashing. Perhaps if they expose her again it'll break the brainwashing and they can care for her and let her real personailty return... or Merlin will use magic once they know what caused it or Gaius will know something that supposedly counteracts the effects of mandrake root and Merline/Arthur will have to retrieve it.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Such an entertaining episode! Loved it!

Best episode of the season yet.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this one.

Colin Morgan's acting is outstanding. He's amazing in all kinds of scenes. All the awards to his portrayal of Merlin and of Emrys/Old Merlin.

Yep I am guessing it will go this way:
ReplyDeleteMerlin Assumes its magic, searches for a cure in Ep9, but it most likely fails since there is no spell - She is just insane.
For a show where EVERYTHING has been solved with magic, that would be a VERY brilliant twist.

Once they figure out the mandrake root was used, there's bound to be a solution. Perhaps she has to be exposed again to remove Morgana's influence.

ReplyDeleteI normally dont react this way when watching TV shows but Im screaming!
ReplyDeleteIn a good, or bad, way? :o
