  1. The room with the mandrakes wasn't nice (understatement).

I'm not happy about Eylan, but at the same glad it wasn't one of the others.

  2. Loved Merlin leading the way, offering Arthur his arm in support, loved Merln being dead serious and in charge - Queen Mab was far more intriguing than our alien friend in ep 2.
Loved the Gwen/Morgana scenes and the promise of more danger and doom. Angel was really excellent in this.
    A brilliant episode!

  3. I am still so sad about Elyan's death but the episode was great! Loved the plot twist at the end with Gwen and the weirdness of the episode in general!

  4. Really good episode today. I can't believe Elyan's dead. I just... I can't. I suspected that something is going to happen to him, but dying...I really...have no words here.

Morgana kidnapping Gwen, from the beginning, seemed like more complicated and longer plan. She wasn't trying to kill her, she wanted her on her side. First she tried to ACTUALLY do it, but Gwen turned out to be stronger than she expected and resisted all the pain&hallucinations. So she must have used some kind of spell. The question is, what spell? And how do we (meaning Merlin) break it? Obviously, she's doing it as a plan to destroy Arthur, but I also think she's just lonely and misses her friend.

BTW, great work Angel, Gwen falling apart in despair was brilliantly played! And truly hard to watch for everyone who cares about her.

I really like the fact Merlin seemed more like himself in this episode. Not quite the same, but not so depressed all the time. And he even very wisely used his magic to get out of this forest and save Arthur from the arrow. (I just wish everybody knew he can do that. It would go so much faster with the help of his magic! Argh!)

Arthur, on the other, wasn't doing so well without Gwen. He seemed kinda lost without her. At least he had Merlin to hold on to;) And for all Arwen fans: yay for actually seeing them sharing the room, I mean it's weird that now that Arthur&Gwen can finally be together, they don't share too many scenes and definitely no kisses. What's up with that?

And then there's Elyan. I figured since the episode was about Gwen and after the first scene it's going to be tough one for him. He and Arthur were so deperately looking for her, but Elyan also really blamed himself for her kidnapping. (BTW, the scene where they talk about Gwen basically rasing her brother and their relations, just kinda made me think of Arthur&Morgana. There are no words that could describe how much I miss THEIR friendship/sibiling's bond!)
I wasn't expecting Elyan to die. Not really. It crossed my mind, but... That was so unexpected! Still in shock. Poor Elyan! You'll be missed.

Next week: Gwen trying to kill Arthur and Old Merlin's return! Can't wait!

  5. Here's my problem: I think the episode was well done - good writing, great acting, Gwen being persuaded to Morgana's side was interesting, and poor Elyan! But what's the point? Does this actually fit with the end of all the season, with whatever Mordred's doing, and the big battle. Because it all feels like a whole lot of stalling to me. See, every season there's some reason to wait on Merlin revealing who he is, and Camelot becoming magic-friendly. Uther still being alive, mostly, but then Arthur becoming king, and then figuring out what kind of king he is, finding Excalibur, marrying Gwen, and now ... what? It's been almost a decade in-world, and about five years since Arthur became king, and so far this season, I can't help but wonder what we're waiting for now? The end of the series? Because they just killed off Elyan to help turn Gwen evil, but the way things look that might be cleared up next week, and if that's the case, it doesn't feel like a good season arc that also happens to putting off the big reveal, it feels like each episode is just this week (possibly bleeding into next week's) attempt to stall. And that's getting less and less fun, to the point where I can't enjoy a good episode like this one, because I'm wondering, what's the point? Where's this going, really? And for the first time, I feel like the answer is "Nowhere."

Am I being too harsh? Am I entirely alone in this?

  6. I am just so confused after this episode. I mean what happened during the time frame when Gwen refused Morgana and when her brother came in the room to save her? I wanna know how Morgana could've gotten Gwen on her side. Is it a spell? Is it some type of manipulation that has nothing to do with magic? I kinda wanna hear about what Morgana was talking about with Gwen when they were at the dinner table. Was Morgana really a prisoner for a couple years? Grrr! This episode gave me more questions than answers!

  7. The roots coming down from the ceiling are mandrake root which contains hallucinogens. According to legend they scream when dug up and can also kill... guessing they only went with half that legend.

  8. Can Merlins life get more complicated?

    Its not exactly a spell.

Morgana locked Gwen in a room full of Mandrake Roots. Mandrake roots are said to cause hallucinations and insanity. Basically Morgana held her in that room long enough to make Gwen believe those hallucinations to be real, thus driving Gwen borderline insane. Gwen's brother's death most likely was the final straw.

  10. No, I totally agree with you. After last week's episode where Merlin denied himself yet again (albeit in a fantastic scene) I felt totally frustrated.
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, but it did feel like more stalling on the most important storyline. We are moving forward SLOWLY with the Arthur/Merlin relationship (nice handshake, Merlin leading the way etc.), but I am worried that we will run out of time for Merlin to really becomes the man we want to see at Arthur's side. Despite all the nice Merthur moments, Merlin is still a servant to date, cleaning Arthur's shoes and making his bed as referred to in the last ep.)
Like many other fans I have been ranting on about the necessity of a reveal to move on the story and save the authenticity of the characters for ages. Now, that filming is finished and I know that no ranting will change anything that is to come, I feel flat. We are almost halfway through the season and there is still no reveal. Are they really keeping it for the last 2 episodes? Castle and Beckett got together at the end of their season 4 and I think their new relationship totally works and makes the show new and more believable.
I fail to understand why the writers are so worried about changing the status quo. Merlin and Arthur are strong characters, they can take it!

  11. What a pointless, utter mess....I mean my expectations are pretty low at this point, but this is easily one of the worst episode they ever did...perhaps even worse than the one with the goblin. That one at least was silly on purpose. But that...aside from the fact that NATURALLy a female had to break down unter Morgana's spell, aside from the fact that Morgana could have killed Arthur on the spot, aside from the fact that she has way easier ways to control other people (the hydra for example), I totally don't get how Gwen could go from being utterly terriefied to controlled crazy, the whole thing was way too convulted and I didn't even care that one of the main knights just died.

  12. Considering that we never get a pay off for anything, you aren't alone...I'm still waiting for Arthur to be the great king they all speak of. Well, they say that he had been one, but how can they even say that if people are stilled killed for their magic? Plus, I never saw him doing anything particular great, not without Merlin or Gwen (or both) guiding his decisions.
