What are the best TV series of your country (English-speaking countries excluded) ?

Oct 31, 2012

It's no secret that people from all around the world visit SpoilerTV, j'en suis la preuve vivante.

It's also no secret that great television series are made everywhere nowadays.

Q : So, Bunky Bunk, you virile beast, why did you start this thread, exactly ?

A : Well, if you must know, I have started to learn Italian this fall — I like it, btw, and it's easy because it looks a lot like French, so that's quite a change from my German class (I peaked at Year 4 and since then, my level in German seems to be verstopft).

And since I didn't get my relatively good level in English just by paying attention in class (Jack Bauer, Vic Mackey and John Locke were also teachers of mine), I was wondering if there were some great Italian TV series out there that I could watch. But how can I know which ones I should turn my attention to ? Well, why not ask the numerous Italian commenters and readers on SpoilerTV ? So here I am.

No matter where you're from (but if you're Italian, German or Spanish, I'm particularly interested), please take a moment to tell us which TV series of your country you think are worth watching. I will add them to the little list I already have and that I share with you below. And if you want to describe their genre or share a brief synopsis with us, it'd be most appreciated.

Feel free to disagree with the shows I'm mentioning if you have seen them and thought they were awful (I haven't seen that many of them, I've just read articles and/or looked at awarded series). I'll probably update the thread a few times throughout the next few days.

Now it's your turn, go ahead and tell us which foreign series we should add to our queue of series we must catch up on !

  4. Hi all ! I'm a French guy, from Paris and my favorite french show is HARD, which, by the way, has be sold to an English network a few months ago... Anyway, this is by far the funniest french show right now... It's about a upper class woman, which after her husband's death, found out that he owned a pornographic studio. She becomes the CEO and she starts sleeping with the Porn star, Roy La Poutre (Roy The Cock)... It's not a sitcom nor a drama... The format is more likely like the Showtime's comedies (Weeds, United States of Tare...). If you guys can check it out, I promise, you won't be disappointed !

  5. I'm from Mexico. There's a Colombian series called "El Cartel De Los Sapos". It is a good series about the drug cartels in Latin America. It has around 200 episodes already, and 1st Season was on 2008, while the 2nd was in 2010. In fact, it became so popular that is got its own feature film which is being presented as a contender for Best Foreign Film on the Academy Awards. Actually, Tom Sizemore also stars in the movie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9vx8jpV2WY

Also, I know you have "Capadocia" there, but just want to mention that this is a great series. Its 3rd season already started in HBO Latino. There's nothing like it in Mexico. But there's not much series in Mexico because of the lack of budget. Instead, there's a lot of soap operas or "telenovelas" how we call it.

  6. Gran Hotel (Antena 3 , 2011-?) Spain

    Genre : Mystery , Drama , Romance

  7. Mulher de Fases is one of my favorite brasil/HBO colaborations, it's just hilarious!! This comedy follows Gracia, a very young divorcee trying to find love again, but she has the peculiarity of taking the personality or aspects of the men she dates. The cast it's what really makes the series, though.

  8. I'm Mexican, but i know a Spanish series called Cuentame Como Paso, it already has like 10 seasons but it's really good.
And as it's been said before, here in Mexico there's a loat of "Telenovelas" which has a completely different format than the US tv series, so i don't watch any of them tbh...

  9. Bulgarian: House Arrest - a comedy show, very funny :)

  10. I'm from Uruguay and I think "Cuéntame cómo pasó" is awesome! The series chronicles the experiences of a family during 1968 and 1981 in Spain. Is a chronicle socio-politics of the time. worth watch it!

  11. I'm ashamed to say I have never watched a non English-speak tv show. Some Canal + original series seem interesting to me, but I never give them a try.
Maybe the language is part of the magic for me as well. Whenever I watch a movie or tv show in my native tongue, it kinda puts me off somehow. And since I have learned English through tv shows, and I'm still learning, there's always a better reason for me to watch English programming.

  12. Hi, I'm from Spain and I think the best series in Spain are 'Gran Hotel' (Antena 3) and 'Isabel' (TVE)

  13. I loved the german soap opera «Bianca-Wege zum Glück», which was adapted by Lifetime Television as «Monarch Cove» for a short time. It had 224 episodes, but wasn't divided in seasons... another german series is «Stromberg», which has currently 46 episodes in 5 seasons.

  14. I'm italian, but, I should confess, I prefer american and english series, however I have to mention Montalbano that is the only series for which I can sacrifice an american one. And Il giovane Montalbano, with the adventures of the Sicilian detective when he was young, with an other actor.

  15. I'm from Israel and the best TV series is definitely Hatufim (free translation: Abducted {but plural}). If you don't know, this is the original version of Homeland. This is absolutely genius and a lot of elements on Homeland are seen in Hatufim which is really nice. BTW, I saw some of the clips that were filmed for Homeland in Israel! It was really close to my house :)

  16. I'm from France but I watched El Internado and now I'm watching El barco

Great series, that have the same level than some of USA
El Internado was amazing ! And El Barco is great !!!

  17. I'm from France !
Personnaly I just know 3 of all of them (Flics, Profilage et les Bleus)

I don't think French series have a huge success here, because they're are only bad reproductions of american ones !

They tried with a spanish one (L'Internat M6 that was a bad copy of El Internado Antenna 3 Spain) but te ratings were very bad, so they stopped at the end of the first season !

These last years, they tried to renew old french series (new cast, new place, characters involved ...) and I guess they did well with Julie Lescaut, Alice Nevers, RIS Police Scientifique, Section de Recherche (TF1)
They noticed that these series needed fresh air, and they got it !

But France in kwnon to be a huge fan of American Series (The Mentalist, CSI, Criminal Minds, Grey's Anatomy ... )

  18. I'm Italian and, believe me, these's nothing I could mention you!
Shows, here, are really bad and all of them are focused on the mafia or drougs. I prefer American and English shows!

"Il Tredicesimo Apostolo" is awful. "Montalbano" is for old-men.

  19. I'm from Spain too, and I would say that best quality tv-series are Cuéntame como pasó (people always cuts the title for "Cuéntame" only), Gran Hotel and Crematorio. Crematorio has 1 season only and it was one of the first tv-series created by a private channel in Spain. It tells the story of the real state speculation in the cost of Spain. It's not very famous but it's very good.

  20. I'm italian but I barely watch anything on TV here. I prefer British and American shows.

I watched and really enjoyed Nero Wolfe (8 episodes - Rai 1 - aired in April/May 2012). Episodes are available online.

I also really enjoyed Il Giovane Montalbano too (a prequel to another series called Montalbano) but they speak in a southern Italian dialect and most of the times I'm not sure what they're saying, so I wouldn't suggest it if you are trying to learn Italian ;)

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm from Italy and I think it's fair to say that TV here sucks. It's really bad, the acting, the stories, the locations...it all screams fake. I'll admit I'm not the best judge, I've been watching american/british series since I was a kid, I grew up with The Cosby Show, Growing Pains, Family Ties, Saved by the Bell and right now I'm following an embarrassingly high number of shows (seriously, I don't know how I manage to do that and still get some sleep at night).

That being said, Romanzo Criminale it's strangely good, but it's very...."Italian", if I may say so. It would recommend it if you're interested but you have to read about the story behind it to understand and appreciate it better.

  22. Excellent idea for a thread! I am learning Norwegian and have heard of some of those Scandinavian ones above, but there are a few new to me that I'll be checking out - thanks!

  23. In Belgium there was a new series 'Clan': it's about four sisters who want to murder their brother-in-law because he has been a jerk to their other sister for whole their marriage. The series begins with his funeral but you don't know how he died. Throughout the weeks you see the several murder complots the sister tried (which almost all ended in failure, but resulted in other peoples death in stead of their brother-in-law). It's theme is pretty dark, but there are also funny moments in it. At first I thought: how can I root for four women who are trying to kill their brother-in-law? But he is such an *sshole! Not only to their sister, but also to his neighbours, his colleagues, etc.

  24. Greetings from Poland ;)

Unfortunately in my opinion there isn't many brilliant polish tv series, but... I can mention some good ones ;)

    General - Drama:

    1) Ojciec Mateusz (Father Mateusz) - polish remeake of "Don Mateo"
    2) Ranczo (the Ranch) - light comedy about polish countryside
    3) rodzinka.pl (family.pl) - witty sitcom
    4) Czas honoru (Days of Honor) - World War II television drama series
    5) Kryminalni (translated something like... The Crime Division) - simple cop show
    6) Prawo Agaty (Agata's Law) - lawyers, lawyers, lawyers ;)
    7) Nowa (Rookie) - cop show about young criminal inspector

I'm not a big fan of soap operas but, in Poland we also have couple of them so here is the list:

    1) M jak miłosc (L for Love) - it's on the air since year 2000
    2) Brzydula - polish version of "Yo soy Betty, la fea"
    3) Na dobre i na złe (For better and for worse) - our version of "ER" with more soap than medical stuff ;)
    4) Klan - the longest polish soap opera :) It's on tv sine 1997. Over 2300 episodes were made to this day

  25. On what channel was this? (not that I watch much regular TV here :P)

I remember Van Vlees En Bloed being received very well. Generally it seems our miniseries are of a much higher quality than the regular shows.

  26. To confess actually I don't like Dutch series at all. The writing and acting isn't as top as on American or British series. The only serie I watched what had almost the level was: De Co-Assistent (The Intern= English translation).

Maybe I watched too many English shows and have higher standards.

  27. Hi I'm from Poland and below are my favourite shows (my title translation in the brackets):
    1) Prawo Agaty (Agata's law) - sort of like Ally McBeal but bit different
    2) rodzinka.pl (family.pl) - awesome comedy series
    3) Rodzina zastępcza (Foster family) - family show
    4) Fala zbrodni (Crime wave) - police show
    5) Niania (The Nanny) - polish version, as awesome as the original :)
    6) Czas Honoru (Time of Honor) - show about WW II in Poland
    7) Kryminalni (Division)- police show

  28. in Israel Hatufim (Homeland is the american version of this tv show) is on it's second season and it's a hit as well. you might like 1-0-0 (which is a crime police drama and 100 is actually the phone number to call the police) there's a funny drama called Mother Day which i really like.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I would suggest from the Spanish State:
    - El Comisario - 10 Seasons _ police drama

    - Brigada Central - Police drama

    - Hispania - historical series

    - Pulseras Rojas - hospital drama about sick children

    - 7 Vidas - early seasons very sharp humour - social protest

    - El Barco - mystery

    - La Fuga - Thriller

    - Gran Hotel - drama similar to Downton Abby

    - Verano Azul - A children's summer series

    Basque Television:
    - Goenkale - drama similar to Neighbours

    - Bat eta Bi - Comedy

    - Vaya Semanita - Comedy
    Austrian TV
    - Rex - police drama where the police dog Rex always saves the day

  30. I usually watch american of english shows, but there is 1 dutch show I stay home for:

    Van God Los.
The series consists of individual episodes, each with its own plot and characters. Every week is a true crime the basis for the plot: the crime itself, but also the events that have put the perpetrator to commit it be re-enacted, albeit dramatized manner

    Van God Los (2011 - ...)

  31. New Zealand

Shortland Street(1992-) is a New Zealand prime-time soap opera centering around the fictitious Shortland Street Hospital, It is the country's longest-running drama and soap opera, being broadcast continuously for over 5100+ episodes in 20 years.

Also has been aired in UK
It is named after an actual street here in NZ.

  32. Germany: Doctor's Diary (RTL 2007- 2010) Comedy - Awesome TV serie!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I guess we are only talking of scripted television, right? For the German speaking world, I'd again mention Stromberg (the German version of the Office).

Tatort is a very famous crime series, going back to 1970 with different inspectors and cities all the time depending on which regional tv station produced the episode.

Borgia is the alternative to the Jeremy Irons starring American series.

There's Danny Lowinski, some comedy with a lawyer in a mall, don't watch it ;)

The big rest majority is mainly entertainment shows (nearly everything Stefan Raab does), late night shows or sketch comedy shows (though I could mention Switch (Reloaded) here which parodies other tv shows), so they don't really fall in this category. There's also of course lots of soap operas or "reality-tv"/"Hartz-IV"-TV...

  34. I'm in Korea, and there are a number of fantastic Korean shows (over here called dramas regardless of genre). Romcoms were much more popular in the early 2000's, while in the last few years the best dramas have all been more serious (much like other countries).

Thrillers: City Hunter (2011, 24ish episodes). A Batman-like superhero origin story.
Story of a Man (2009, 24ish episodes)A twisty conspiracy thriller.
Vampire Prosecutor (2011-, ongoing) NCIS type procedural, but with an overarching supernatural mythology.

Romcom: My Name is Kim Sam Soon (2005, 16 episodes). The gold standard of Korean romances. An Asian Bridget Jones' Diary.
Delightful Girl Chung Hyang (2005, 20ish episodes). A modern retelling of an ancient Korean Romeo and Juliet-like folktale.
Coffee Prince (2007, 18 episodes). Starts out as a wacky case of mistaken gender, but eventually becomes a poignant tale of questioning ones sexuality, and whether gender matters in true love.

  35. SERBIA:

Sva ta ravnica [All the plain] (1 season, 12 episodes)

Jagodici [second season of Sva ta ravnica] (currently 1 season,2 ep)

    genre: thriller

  36. In Italy, if I have to choose between those, surely Romanzo Criminale. I suggest also "Boris", maybe "Elisa di Rivombrosa" and the sequel with her daughter (very similar to Downton Abbey), but I think that my country doesn't have the right mindset for tv series, not anymore at least. The best I've seen transmitted was until the late 90s, like Fantaghirò and a lot of sit-com.

  37. BeTipul (the original In Treatment) is such an amazing show, deep and smart. great casting.

  40. In Pakistan there is a trend of short dramas or serials, as we call them. They are from 13 to 20 episodes. They are quite popular here, and many channels air various serials throughout the year.

  41. I'm from Brasil and here there are no good series! Here there good soap operas and that's why I have to see americans series

  42. That's true ! Totally !

That's why I barely watch a serie in French, except French ones of course that don't have any translation :)

  43. It's on vtm! The last episode is next monday ;)! Yes Van Vlees en Bloed was awesome! And indeed, our miniseries are really good! But sometimes, I would like to see a series that would continue for more than 2 seasons, like 'Code 37'!

  44. Great post Bunk!

I love watching foreign made (I live in the US) series for a number of reasons, but mainly to see something different than the mediocre US network series. I love seeing the various countries, the culture, the different directors' styles compared to the all-too-familiar and all-too-similar to one another American shows.

I've seen mostly Scandinavian series at this point (Bron/Broen, Borgen Den Som Dræber, Forbrydelsen, Lilyhammer, and one not mentioned here Sebastian Bergman), but I have 2 French shows ready to start over X-Mas (Braquo and Spirals).

This post will get bookmarked as reference material for future viewing!
    Tanks!

  45. I'm Spanish and I like very few Spanish shows to be honest haha the only one I'm watching right now is 'Isabel'. It's about Isabel de Castilla (Catholic queen ¿? don't know how to translate that lol) and it's quite good. Another one would be '7 Vidas' a comedy that ended some years ago, but maybe it has a lot of 'in' jokes, that if you don't live here, won't understand... Cuéntame is another good one, but I got tired after 10 seasons hahaha ;)

  46. Ahh, I'm not a regular vtm watcher so I didn't know of it! And yeah, we really don't have a lot of shows with multiple seasons, it's a bit of a shame! :P

  47. Well, "Sai De Baixo" was a great comedy Show. But, sadly, it hard to find good shows in Brasil besides soap operas

  48. Agree with you on "Montalbano". In fact I just enjoyed "Il Giovane Montalbano", but I guess I was alone on that since I haven't heard any plans of a second season...

  52. À mon avis il faudrait séparer les séries française faites en France et celle au Québec. Au Québec on peut facilement ajouter La Galère (Radio-Canada).

  53. Are you from Israel too? It's so nice to see this poor little country have representatives here!

  54. I'm from Denmark. I don't watch a lot of Danish scripted shows, because I prefer the American ones, but "Forbrydelsen" (The killing) is really good :D

  58. You should add to the best italian series these two:

    -Boris http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1020116/
    -L'Ispettore Coliandro http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1556087/

Both funny, witted and unorthodox (compared to other italian series).

  59. Hi! i'm from Israel too...

I think that in the comedy section you need to add "Savrey Maranan". That is very funny sitcom here in Israel (BTW, ABC network in USA just today bought that sitcom to a US adaption!).

You can add "Asfur", that is a cable show in Israel, and was a great hit here among young people. (BTW, FOX network in USA bought that comedy/drama to a US adaption too!)

But Hatofim is, by far, one of the best drama series in Israeli television.

  61. This is a great idea. Thanks! At the moment i want learn more spanish and russian and i'm looking serials from Russia and spanish speaking countries so it helps me to choose what i should watch.
From Russia i am watching comedy "Интерны" ( "Interns") about doctors.

In Lithuania we don't have very good serials, because most of them actors acting is bad and not very good scripts. It's is only one serial that i liked Gedimino 11 (political thriller, 2001 (2 season) and sequal 2010 (1 season). The plot here is a means through which a story is the economic, political, moral, ethical issues, government relations with people. The show allows developers to imagine how the visible policy mechanism skillfully juggles interpretations of important events in the country, and the next time you are binding on the government and marginalized closest ties. Events boils not only the government, whose address Gedimino. 11, but also the Parliament, the President, conspiratorial flats or in the forest, near the corpse dug pit.)
