Thanks to TVMONKEY for the heads up.
Recurring characters are rare on "Supernatural," especially lately, as the Winchesters have lost old friends like Bobby and Rufus. Fortunately, while Dean was busy in Purgatory and Sam was busy having picnics in the park, there were still a few hunters left to keep people safe. Zap2it has exclusively confirmed that an old friend of the Winchesters' will return this year to help Sam and Dean out on a case. (Though Dean might object to that description.)
"Lost" actor Jon Gries will return this season as Martin Creaser, a hunter who helped John Winchester out multiple times while he was alive. Fans will remember Martin from the Season 5 episode "Sam, Interrupted," in which Sam and Dean found him in a mental institution after the trauma of hunting got the better of him.
Now, Martin is out of the loony bin and back on the job. As we already reported, in the Halloween episode, Sam will finally come face-to-face with Benny, Dean's vampire pal from Purgatory. Suffice to say that Sam won't exactly be inviting Benny to join the family.
In the upcoming episode "Citizen Fang," Sam asks Martin to keep an eye on Benny after some unexplained deaths in Benny's hometown. Dean won't be particularly happy about it -- and when Martin finds out that a Winchester has teamed up with a vampire, he will not be impressed.

Aw, this sounds awesome! Can't wait for it.
ReplyDeleteYes! I remember the BTS pictures with the actor. So glad that they're bringing Martin back!
ReplyDeleteWoo! Hoo! I liked Martin. Glad to see him back.
ReplyDeleteGood to have him back
ReplyDeleteMy guess is Martin wont find anything on Benny and Dean will have a told you so moment but Benny will end being up to something?
Nice! I liked Martin! Good to have him back!
ReplyDeleteI actually liked Martin! It'll be fun to see what they have in store for him.
ReplyDeleteThat's great news. I liked Martin.
ReplyDelete..whaaaaat. the crazy hunter of the mental ward fantastic..dean will be completely screw try to convince sam and him benny is a "" good and confidant guy""..means fun,.,fun,.,fun,. a LOT OF IT..ja,.ja,.,ja
ReplyDeleteI'm must be feeling cynical today, because all my comments start with Amy and end with snark.
ReplyDeleteOh please please post them then :)
ReplyDeleteDon't kill h-- too late
ReplyDeleteI'm thrilled Martin is back! I've been wanting to see hunters on this show since the Roadhouse. I'm still pissed at Sera for killing off Rufus in that useless manner. I love continuity, and the hints at a worlwide hunter community that know of Sam & Dean! I wish they would bring back that female hunter who survived Magificent 7 in season 3, too.
ReplyDeleteI LOVED Martin in "Sam, Interrupted" He was hilarious! Although I don't suspect this ep will be as funny based on what it's about, but still...he was a memorable one time character. Glad to see him back (and free of the loony bin!)
ReplyDeleteLove the continuity. Martin was a big help identifying the wraith, so I'm glad he's back on the job. Maybe the time spent helping the Winchesters helped him, too. :) It's perfect that Sam doesn't trust Benny and has someone watching him, but not ganking him until they're sure he's done something. That was the entire lesson with Amy. Loyalty is one thing but if a monster is acting like a monster, there's no gray area. As far as we know, Benny hasn't killed, so Sam has to make sure before he can do anything. Amy killed, so Dean was right to make sure she didn't again despite Sam's loyalty for her saving him. But Benny is a different scenario. Not only did he get Dean out of Purgatory, they apparently found side by side for a while. Sam and Amy knew each other for a few days, Dean and Benny fought in the trenches presumably owe their lives to each other many times over. Sam is wise to have absolute proof before calling Dean out on Benny. I'm looking forward to this one as well as Blood Brothers. Should be a very interesting dynamic.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't say it better :) It's not like they never met ''good'' vampire before (and it was Sam who defended them at the time). Better make sure Benny isn' t killing, that's for sure, and if he is, he'll have to die for it, if he's not, no reason to kill him. Cass sure changed in the first year after meeting Dean, maybe Benny changed too
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly loved Martin and having him back is awesome. I don't trust Benny. I may be wrong and would like to think so, but Dean has never had that kind of luck. If he is killing, it will incredibly tough on Dean but he warned Benny to stay clean. Dean doesn't want to hunt him. We will have wait and see, but it sounds exciting. Dean is going to have a hard time facing Martin once the hunter finds out about Benny and Dean.
ReplyDeleteMy guess: they will make Benny amazing in episode 8x05, which will give support to some harsh words from Dean to Sam (something like a vampire at least bothered to help me escape from purgatory and you didn't, and so on), and increase the distance between the brothers. Then Cas is back and I think Benny is the reason that the writers will make him relates more with Sam than seen in previous seasons.
ReplyDeleteAnd episode 8x09, another one that will focus on Benny, shows that he is not guilty apparently (including asking Dean for help to prove his innocence. Ty and Jensen had several scenes at the present time, including another actor, inside a abandoned house - which I think will be some kind of torture scene) and Dean will be extremely upset with Sam, maybe even leaving him, but it will be the first episode where we see that Benny is not so nice and maybe even have an agenda. The writers should give us an idea of what direction the character is following, as the vampire will be in episodes 8x05, 8x07, 8x08, 8x09 and 8x10.
The separation will be for writers to explore more of the Dean's dark side and for this, Benny has to be around. But over the episodes, Dean will realize that Benny will not be such a positive influence and that he needs his brother to maintain his humanity.
Meanwhile, Sam and Cas are becoming closer, maybe even Sam and Kevin. What will make the younger Winchester withdraw from wanting a normal life (if he will) is a mystery, as well as who was the figure who was watching the Amelia's house in the first episode.
All this will be a very fertile ground for a more mature and close relationship. But unfortunately, we have to endure more fights between them *sigh*.
Guess it has to get worst before it can get better?
ReplyDeleteI liked Martin. I certainly don't mind a return visit.
ReplyDeleteUNCLE RICO!!!!!!
ReplyDeletedon't forget Napoleon Dynamite!
ReplyDeleteThe Winchesters have never had a rule that they have to wait until they witness a monster killing someone before they can yank them. The Dean rule with Amy was that if you're a monster, it's in your nature to kill, so it's only a matter of time before you kill. Hope Sam brings some wire. Benny probably saved Dean's life, but Amy saved Sam's. I don't see how Dean's life is worth more than Sam's.
ReplyDeleteSo Dean not only brought a monster back into the world, he doesn't want any hunters watching Benny and investigating suspicious deaths Benny might be responsible for. That's not good. Dean sounds really whipped.
ReplyDeleteMy prediction is Benny kills Martin, but Sam and Dean won't find out about it until later.
ReplyDeleteThey let the vampires go in S2 but they were monsters. In S2 Sam said that their job wasn't to kill monsters, but to kill evil. If not human = monster, Cass could be call a monster (especially considering how many people the angels killed in the last year and how most of them never cared).
ReplyDeleteWith the Amy thing, not gonna debate if it was right or wrong to do it, but Dean said it himself that after Cass betraying them, he had a hard time trusting a ''none-human'' or anyone else since the last creature he trusted just betrayed him. And he had trouble trusting Sam's judment too at the time, with his mentals problems at the time.
The Winchesters have generally yanked first and asked questions later when it comes to monsters. The only monsters they let walk away are the ones who can prove a past commitment to nonviolence. I understand Dean developing a friendship with Benny but it's alarming that Dean not only let Benny loose in a world full of vampire cheeseburgers without monitoring him, but also doesn't want a hunter they consider a friend investigating him.
ReplyDeleteCas is an angel, not a monster. Angels haven't been known to feed on humans.
I'm with you with the not monitoring, that's why I said I was agreeing with SuePo that it's a good idea that Sam doesn't trust him and want to make sure he's clean and all. I guess Dean told him (or at least hope, I guess we'll see that later in the last flashback before they left Purgatory) to not kill humans and only eat cows and animals or something like that. But if he proves to be clean, that he's really made a ''nonviolence commitment'', why kill him while in the past they let monsters go for that reason?
ReplyDeletePeople complained that the writers are forgetting that the shows has a history before current seasons and the season before, but sometime I feel the fans are forgetting the past seasons too from time to time
There's history on both sides of yhis. They killed Madison, by Madison's choice, because even with her good intentions, the odds were that sooner or later she would get out and kill. Vampires have been shown to have incredible urge to feed on humans. Leonore was portrayed as one in a thousand. Gordon knew he wouldn't be able to resist the urge to feed long and planned to kill himself after he killed Sam. When Dean was turned, he almost fed on Lisa. The thing here is that the assumption with Benny seems to be that he will be the one in a thousand that can resist rather than assuming that it won't be long before he feeds - just because Dean likes him.
ReplyDeleteFor me, it won't be right until Sam wants to be with Dean, from his own free will, not because he is forced to because of external forces.. But I get the impression that will not be the case, which i guess is realistic.
ReplyDeleteOf course there's chances he won't be able to resist, but I just don't see why assume he won't. Dean and Gordon didn't even try eating on animals. If there's history on both side, why assume it's 100% sure it will be bad? Dean should've check himself what is Benny doing, no defending him on the fact he didn,t and I'm glad Sam is checking. after that we'll just have to wait and see instead of killing him on the spot right now
ReplyDeleteExactly. I understand Dean may think Benny's that 1% that can resist feeding, but he should also check on him, keep an eye on him at least for a bit. Letting him leave right away was irresponsible.
ReplyDeleteYeah, with Sam's its always been him being forced into hunting or him just excepting his fate. He rarely had fleeting moments of wanting the life.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with waiting until Benny is proven guilty is that at least one, if not many, innocent people will lose their lives if Benny is not that 1% that can resist feeding. Sam and Dean can hope to catch him in the act with 24-hour surveillance (assuming they have that time to spend on him), but if Benny is smart, what are the odds that he won't get away with many murders before they catch him? The hunters rule on Supernatural seems to be that monsters aren't given the "innocent until proven guilty" benefit of the doubt that humans are because they are predatory by nature.
ReplyDeleteYup, get that, its so hard sometime to see who's good and wrong^^; maybe cause I watched the first seasons this summer. I miss the old time where they used to be those shade, that not all was evil. It's always easier to just destroy everything and say ''well...too bad for the good ones, it was too hard to work at finding you''.
ReplyDeleteI understand the problem of finding it for sure, in a village of monster finding the 1 or 2...or 0 that are good, but I understand the risks. It just doesn't seem right to kill everyone just cause you can't find a 'solution' on how to find to 1%. Black and white is easier on the mind. I wish the boys could go, at some point, at where they were in S2 about finding that not everyone was B&W, it seem like they're taking the ''easy way''...
I actually agree with you in that it's important to look for shades of gray because they lose their humanity if they just start killing everything. But I'm pretty certain Benny is off on a killing spree as I write this - and Dean is not going to be happy that he gave him the benefit of the doubt in the end. Benny was Dean's friend in Purgatory, but he had a self-serving reason to be Dean's friend. Dean was his ticket out of Purgatory. Whereas Leonore and Amy demonstrated a conscience and good intent with years of nonviolent living even though no one was forcing their hand (they only broke when the monster pressure became too much), Benny can't demonstrate that because he's been in Purgatory. Dean can't really know who Benny is because Dean hasn't seen anything of Benny that Benny hasn't chosen to show him.
ReplyDeleteFunny, most of mine start with Ruby and end with huge sighs.
ReplyDeleteI'd rather have Mackey but Martin will do. This should be an intense episode.
ReplyDeleteExactly why i'm scared about Benny and doubt him^^; I wish he's changed since knowing Dean or he will change. Like Gabriel, who kill many people in his first episodes (and surely a lot more the boys don't know about), but changed in S5 and still the fans were sad to see him good and don't consider him like an atrocity or whatever. But yeah, its really more a wish than logic^^; It just seem that the boys have no ally so I would love to see Benny ''get with them''...but I don't have too much hope...hanging to hope. And that would make a little ''shade of gray'' to the show that I,ve miss
ReplyDeleteyeah I know...more hope than chances^^;...I'm still hoping and waiting
I liked Martin. I thought he was a sweet old guy and I'm happy that he managed to pull himself together and get well.
ReplyDeleteI really hope he's a recurring character as I feel the boys need that sort of older Bobby figure, not in the hunting sense but in the emotional one.
I'm sure that if Bobby were still around he would be "idjit-ing" all ove the place at how Sam and Dean are acting at the moment.
We no very little about Benny so does Dean certainly they were brought together in extreme circumstances but that doesnt equate to Benny being different. It doesnt matter Sam knew Amy for only a few days they clearly connected and she saved Sam's life not because she had to be chose to.
ReplyDeleteLike how we are supposed to see Benny as a friend to Dean .Amy was the same for Sam and that didnt stop Dean he cant be surprised that Sam will not embrace Benny. I do expect Dean to get upset with Sam and will probabley throw up stuff at Sam but he is on shaky ground himself so it will just create more than likely a bad atmosphere between the two.
I think same. They're bringing Martin back for some reason.
ReplyDeleteThink we are going to see how Benny is a friend to Dean before this episode and I think he will have his own agenda which Dean won't really see. As for Sam not embracing Benny I don't see Dean completely expecting it or going to really say it is wrong to monitor him once he gets it into his head that people are dying. However its the not telling him and letting it be a former mental patient that is doing it is going to get to him. Just like part of the Amy thing for Dean wasn't the killing her it was the lying to Sam so I think that will be thrown up a lot by both boys
ReplyDeleteBut as you said we don't know much about Benny until we do we can't say he is going to be innocent or guilty of these deaths. For all we know he isn't committing these particular ones but is indirectly responsible (i.e. another vamp who has turned up because of Benny) if that is the case the greys get even more grey for the boys. (I'm not saying he won't be responsible for other deaths though)
People dying not actually by Benny's hand but still because Benny is out, which Dean caused. But Sam we also had Sam argue him not hunting doesn't mean he is responsible for people dying because people die.
As much as I'd like to see Martin again think this is going to be a dark murky episode.
Haha. I never minded the demon blood storyline (I minded all the angst and recriminations that came with it)--I really liked the idea of being able to pull demons without killing the person they were in or the long drawn out devil's trap to exorcism chess match. I think the boys need more effective weapons against demons (I'm soooo hoping that's where they are going this season). The knife is fine, but they are killing poor unsuspecting people and they only occasionally address that when it fits for plot purposes. And I grew up on Buffy, so I don't need the boys to be all human all the time, good can get a boost every once in a while. I've never understood why the boys didn't try to learn more magic (they do some spells but only sometimes and then promptly forget them), especially after Spike kicked the one leviatain's butt...it seemed like a good weapon. But what do I know, I like the funny episodes. :)
ReplyDeleteI think if they find that a different vamp is responsible for the deaths, Sam wouldn't hold that against Benny. It doesn't mean he would start trusting him but he wouldn't argue Benny is responsible for something someone else did.
ReplyDeleteAs for the honesty, direct communication is always better, but there's a big difference between sending Martin in to gather information and sending Martin in to kill Benny.
"We aren't going to kill him until he's done something to be killed for." -- Sam Winchester, Metamorphosis. Sounds to me like Sam is following his own rule. Good for him.
ReplyDeleteThe first point is that Jack hadn't fed yet so he hadn't transitioned from human to monster yet. Benny's been a vampire for a long time. The second point is that Sam was proved wrong. Monsters can't indefinitely fight their urge to feed. In this case Jack (the rugaru) ate their hunter friend Travis. Leanore eventually ended up killing. And Amy killed to save her son.
ReplyDeleteDirect honesty is always better as I can't see this coming out anyway but bad for Sam even if him sending Martin in there to gather information does show that Benny is killing and that he is right on this. Because even though Dean may come round to the idea that purgatory Benny is different to topside Benny and he needs to be watched how else is Sam going to paint it ? The only way I can see Dean talking it is his brother thinking 'I didn't trust your friend and also don't trust your judgement enough to talk to you about it so I potentially put a former mental patient in danger and now we are off to possibly execute your friend.'
ReplyDeleteIf the 'I don't want to hunt' and 'you can go off alone' hasn't been fully resolved by that point I can see the brother's relationship coming to a head over this.
I can see that coming even if Benny isn't killing or is indirectly involved and Sam doesn't hold him responsible in the slightest and Dean doesn't feel guilty about his actions indirectly causing deaths; because one of the likely outcomes to check in on Martin after hearing about those deaths is for someone to kill Benny. Because from the blurb that is the point Dean is being let in on the loop about Martin and Sam's actions.
At least with Amy Dean's plan seemed a bit more thought through. He wasn't planning on letting Sam know what he did because how exactly was Sam meant to know Amy was dead if Levi Dean hadn't told him?
Exactly. For all we know, when Dean told him to do like they discussed when the parted, he could've told Benny that a condition of helping him escape was that he didn't kill people anymore. If Lenore and her group could do it, so could he. And he probably doesn't really want to know since he feels a type of loyalty to Benny from their time in the trenches. But if Sam wants to keep tabs on him, Dean probably won't like it, but he won't stop it. I have faith that Dean will do the right thing.
ReplyDeletewho is Mackey?
ReplyDeletemore like he trusts Benny and sees no reason anyone else shouldn't? I wouldnt say whipped more like blinded much like Sam was with Ruby?
ReplyDeleteBut honestly I dont see the writers going there with Dean, he will inevitably end up being right about Benny.
unless Martin doesnt find anything to implicate Benny which by the looks of it he wont and ends up sort of agreeing/siding with Dean?
ReplyDeletewhich means Benny will eventually kill so Sam would be right to gank him from the get go? But he doesn't because he trusts Dean? Its the Amy situation but Sam doesnt go behind Dean's back to gank Benny he does the right thing and watches him instead.
ReplyDeletemaybe the whole point of this Dean/Benny storyline is simply to highlight how messed up Dean has been left by Purgatory?
ReplyDeleteooh! Now that would be interesting!
ReplyDeleteThe hunter that lead Dean to Immanuel.
ReplyDeleteI loved Buffy but I don't want the brothers to be anything but human. That's one of the first things that attracted me to their characters. Buffy was superpowered, Angel was a vampire, Charmed was 3 witches, and so on. I liked how the Winchesters didn't have that...until episode 5. They did what they did knowing they were overpowered, mere humans against the supernatural bad. I'm one of the few who was really glad when Sam lost his visions and hutch-moving skills. I also liked Willow better before she became a witch. As for Spike's spell, I always assumed that you had to be a powerful witch to pull it off. However, there have been many spells like the one with Bobby's scrying tripod that I too have been surprised they never used again.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that the pure humanity aspect gave the brothers a nice underdog appeal that would otherwise have been hard to create given their "physicality" :) and smarts, and was a nice distinction among other similar network shows. I can see it's appeal. After a while, I felt like they brought in other characters to supply the lack, especially as the bad guys got bigger and bigger and tougher and tougher. Things like Ruby's knife and the angel blades really helped, I wish they had more of them, even if Sam can't pull demons himself, an object or spell that accomplished the same effect would have been nice for me as well...and then they could put it on a bungee cord.
ReplyDelete
