“What’s
Up Tiger Mommy” is not going down in history as my favorite Supernatural episode, but when it was
good, it was very, very good. It was written by Andrew Dabb and Daniel Loflin
who are not my favorite writers for the show: I tend to find them a bit uneven.
I adored parts of the episode – especially the scenes in Purgatory – but there
were plot points that felt a little thin to me. The humor in the episode didn’t
flow as seamlessly as it usually does. John Showalter, on the other hand,
brought his usual deft touch to the direction, and Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins,
Ty Olsson, and Jared Padalecki delivered subtle and memorable performances.
Osric Chau is quickly proving himself to be a solid, dependable actor.
Did anyone else recognize an old
face from season one? From the episode “Faith” to be exact? Alex Diakun played
the Reaper in “Faith” and played the virgin-killer in this episode! His scenes
with Sam and Thor’s hammer were fantastic and Padalecki once again demonstrated
his great comic timing.
Lauren Tom took a little while to
grow on me. There’s no question that she had some of the best lines in the
episode: “What? Like it’s my first tattoo?” And she is wonderful in the scene
where she bargains her soul for her son’s life. This scene is nicely
foreshadowed by the earlier scene when Sam and Dean are trying to get her to
stay safe from Crowley and she insists it’s not her soul she’s worried about. I
also enjoyed the scene in which she bests Lyle, the pawn broker. And her right
hook to Crowley was an instant classic. However, I felt some of the earlier
scenes were a bit over-played. I do hope we will see her again because I’d like
to see her settle into the role a little more.
Mark A. Sheppard as Crowley was his
usual acerbic best, and we learned something in this episode that I think will
prove to be pretty important going forward. Crowley is still just a crossroads
demon at heart! While he possessed Mrs Tran, her eyes flashed red and when he
smoked out of her it was red smoke! I’m really wondering if this might prove
significant in defeating him at some point. One of the biggest plot problems at
this point, however, is why Crowley doesn’t just kill the Winchesters. He had
ample opportunity to do so, and they do pose a significant threat. It’s
possible that as Crowley says Plutus has restricted his power, but after Plutus
is killed, it would seem possible for Crowley to break their necks at least...
I’m really liking the interplay
between the brothers. In many ways it feels like a return to the earlier
relationship so many fans said they wanted – and which I was ready to move on
from – with the kind of character development that I was looking for. Sam is
the brainiac we’ve come to expect: intuitively coming up with a way to keep a
demon inside its host by simply saying the exorcism backwards, and coming up
with the answer to Mrs Tran’s math question even before Kevin can. Padalecki is
delivering a great performance subtly reacting to Dean’s actions and reactions.
He’s concerned, but quietly and empathetically so. Crowley’s parting shot that
everyone that comes in contact with the Winchesters dies bloody is a direct hit
to Dean’s greatest insecurity and Sam knows it. The final scene has Sam trying
to convince his brother otherwise, but at this point Sam only has his brother’s
old insecurity to go on as Sam doesn’t know about what happened in Purgatory.
For me, the most interesting action
took place in Purgatory. Ackles delivers his usual excellent performance,
subtly showing Dean’s difficulty in re-integrating and his impatience with
having to be “civilized.” The interrogation scene in the jail is nicely
paralleled with Dean and Benny interrogating a monster in Purgatory. Once
again, the FX and makeup teams do an amazing job creating a new monster for the
Supernatural world. I’m not sure if this was a Leviathan of some kind or
something completely different. Dean is clearly becoming impatient with Sam’s
quiet probing and suddenly loses it, grabbing the guy with his tie around his
throat and pressing the knife against his throat. The camera cuts between Dean’s
intense face in Purgatory and the jail holding cell are punctuated by Sam’s
insistent cries of “Dean!” to get his attention. In Purgatory, even Benny seems
impressed at the brutal lengths Dean will go to. Dean is certainly seemingly
enjoying the “purity” of Purgatory, and I wondered how much of what he drew on
there was linked to his 40 years in Hell at the tutelage of Alistair.
I was curious at the beginning of
the episode when Dean was so eager to banish all the demons and retire to a
beach that he didn’t even want to go protect Mrs. Tran. He doesn’t seem to want
to stop hunting any time to soon, so why would he seem to suggest that? Perhaps
it was only meant for Kevin to be able to retire, or does Dean have other
plans?
When Samandriel asks Dean about what
happened to Cas, he suggests that Castiel is not without friends still in
Heaven, and his comment that Castiel’s problem was having too much heart
foreshadows why Cas seemingly abandoned Dean in Purgatory: to protect Dean.
Dean’s discomfort is poignant and leads into our first glimpse of Castiel in
Purgatory. The cinematography and the desaturated colors of Purgatory strike me
every time. If Dean looks bad in Purgatory, however, Cas looks even worse.
Nothing hurts Dean more than thinking he’s been abandoned, but every fan had to
be satisfied by the reunion and especially the hug. Misha Collins is
outstanding in this scene. He’s back to being more like the angel we knew in
season five. Dean’s declaration that he’s not leaving him touches Castiel and
Collins is able to portray this clearly with a simple twitch of one eye. I’m
going to be very interested to see how the relationship between the three plays
out. Benny is already protective of Dean and is defensive on meeting Castiel,
who he calls ‘Hot Wings’ (love it!), for leaving Dean when they first got to
Purgatory. I’ll be interested to see if Benny’s ultimate motivation here is
that he doesn’t want anything to endanger his own escape from Purgatory or if
he’s becoming protective of Dean as the two rely increasingly on each other.
Regardless, Olsson also turns in a nuanced performance and I can’t wait to see
more scenes between these three.
We are seeing an increasingly
ruthless Dean. He’s the consummate hunter. Sam is disturbed by Mrs. Tran having
to give up her soul, but Dean thinks they got off easy as it means they’ll be
able to banish all the demons. The last straw for Kevin is that Dean was going
to kill Mrs Tran, and Sam is appalled that Dean was going to do it. For his own
part, Dean appears to believe that he is, as Crowley says, a death sentence to
those around him. I’m sure there is more to the final scene when it appears
that Dean has abandoned Cas to his fate.
And finally, a shout out to the FX team,
set designers, location managers and makeup artists who make it so easy to
believe that the supernatural and Purgatory exist because they make it all seem
so real on what we know is a pretty thin budget. The show looks good, but it
always supports and reinforces the story. I’m very, very excited for next week’s
episode which sees Jensen Ackles return to the director’s chair.
I’m really curious to know what
people are thinking about the story so far. Did Dean abandon Cas? Is Sam going
to be able to keep Dean in line? What did you think of Mrs Tran? What did you
think about Crowley’s eyes turning red?

Great review. Thanks for that.
ReplyDeleteSide note - wasn't there a red eyed demon in an earlier season? I think it was the cross road demon that first did the deal with Bela.
Nice review, this episode didnt really provide much for Sam fans but thats to be expected now days.
ReplyDeletegreat review.
ReplyDeletei really think there is something up with crowley. surely it can't be a coincidence that in the 3 or so seasons that we've known this character, this is the first time we've seen his eyes flash? and as far as i remember, none of the other crossroads demons we saw had red smoke, they were all the usual black, same way yellow eyes was only black smoke and not yellow. i think there is something about crowley that we don't know and i think it will play a big part in all this
yeah, we've seen a few cross roads demons back in seasons 2 and 3 (and once in 4 i think). they all had red eyes but not red smoke, just the usual black smoke
ReplyDeleteNice review. I liked this episode a lot. more than premiere. it was intense and dark and had some funny parts to make it a balanced one , which i liked! I Loved Kevin's mother , i expected some worried typical kinda of mother but she was completely different and i liked it! About Crowley i think he just has a great ego! he is a demon after all , a very powerful and special one , but he IS a demon!! but that got me wondering too , why he doesn't kill the Winchesters?! he wanted to do so badly in s6 but he couldn't b/c Cas was there , but now?! I don't know , maybe he enjoys this sort of competition between himself and them!! I don't think that Dean let go of Cas , i think maybe he kinda slipped his hand or i don't know...I'm hoping that Dean didn't let go Cas and instead took a monster with him in this world!! I'm totally looking forward to this season ...lot of mystery and unanswered questions
ReplyDeleteGreat review. I have to say though, that was quite a chore watching this episode, one of the worst i've seen in a while. I wanted to laugh at some of Mrs. Tran's lines, but it all felt so awkward, Lauren Tom is definetly not the best actress to have stepped on set.
ReplyDeleteEven some of Crowley's lines seemed off, like when he shouted out, "my soul!" in the auction, but knowing Mark Shephard's acting chops and comedic timing, lines like this shows how much a lot of it is the writers fault. Oh well! I wonder how Mrs. Tran's character would be like under a writer like Ben Edlund, although her character is not really needed, as it doesn't add much to the overall story.
I did love the reveal of Crowley's red smoke, that was interesting. Moreover, the exchange between Dean and Castiel was quite touching, oddly, i'm still not used to just how close close to eachother the two have grown.
Overall, a bad episode, to be honest. I did not find the good parts to be very, very good at all. Nevertheless, i am still very much intrigued on what's down the road for this season and looking forward to Dean's next episode.
am interested in why Crowley is pressing Dean's buttons like this, with the whole everyone dies around you. If he just wants the Winchesters out of the way killing them would probably be easier especially now seeing how it is doubtful they would get brought back from heaven or hell.
ReplyDeleteHe isn't needling Sam in the same way and as much as Crowley and Dean always seemed to have more scenes together, I doubt it is because Sam is in a better mental place or the Crowley doesn't rate Sam as much of a threat. I think there has to be more to it especially as a sucidial nothing to lose Dean tends to become violently unpredicatable rather than revert into himself.
And we have never seen his eyes flash in his OWN meatsuit. Plus he seemed less like he got caught than disturbed when told he doesn't have a soul.
ReplyDeleteI was actually staring to believe maybe Crowley was more than just a demon. He's eyes had never shown to be red, or black, he'd never smoked out of anyone. I was kinda hoping he'd turn out to be something more, as he always seems to think he is 'above' other demons. I thought, perhaps he wasn't a demon at all.
ReplyDeleteI really liked Samandriel, I kept thinking they were going to kill him, like 2 obnoxious hunters, a prophet, and the prophets mom were the most Crowley could deal with in one day. I kinda hope we never see him again (though I would love for him to return) because every single angel except for 2 archangels we've ever been introduced to die. Correct me if I'm wrong, have any angels we're been introduced to lived... I'm pretty sure not.
I also liked Mrs. Tran, I hope we see her again, at least in another episode or two.
I also think some of the best scenes were in Purgatory, Dean interrogating the monster and finding Cas.
I thought it was a decent but not great episode, bit of a falloff from last week. But Sam getting majolir was pretty cool. I REALLY hope that we at least see it sitting in the trunk of the Impala every once in a while, even if Sam doesn't decide to use it regularly.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the episode. Kevin Mom was something eles, dean reacting to Sam wanting to put the car up for bid... All in all i think it was a good episode... Expecally the flashbacks....
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed both the ep and your review! I am so very happy to have the boys back- was a long and excruciating summer!!
ReplyDeleteI do have to ask..... am I the only person that remembers Benny? - S2E3; BloodLust? I don't know if they are meaning for him to be the same character or not, but he played ELI a member of Lenore's (vamp) nest. I have to wonder... in S6E19; Mommie Dearest, Lenore commented that her nest was gone, because they could no longer "resist" Eve. Where was Mommie Dearest? Purgatory......hmmmmmmmm, is Eli, Benny? Coincidence- or am I reading to much into it?
Loved Tiger Mommy! Would be nice for the boys to have a mother figure again. They have lost all parental figures: Mom, Pappa Winchester, Ellen, Bobby..... they could use some familial ties, even if it comes from Kevin's mom. Cold- cocking Crowley (and selling your soul) was -IMO- what any rational protective mom would do.
Crowley is such a wonderful bad guy. Love hating him. I too wonder what he truly is. Interesting how he reacted to being told he didn't have a soul. Red eyes I can understand, but the red smoke, that was a new development. The way Kripke writes, there WILL be a reason for that, I'm sure.
I am so very concerned for Dean. I know that being in Hell n torturing people was hard on him. Although, I'm positive it gave him an edge in Purg, but being there for an entire year, fighting (killing/torturing), it's got to have repercussions.
Another question.... is it possible that Benny worked w Dean on behalf of Crowley? Crowley has an odd interest in Dean. He seems indifferent to Sam, but Dean-- he really loves to agitate and push him. Crowley KNOWS the boys. He knows what/how Dean was in Hell, could he be slowly working him? Trying to one day get Dean for his own? I know, I know, now I'm really reading too much into it! lol
Again, I am soooo happy to have Dean Sam and if only briefly Cas back!
Thanks! I think that final scene is going to need a lot more context...
ReplyDeleteThanks! All cross roads demons have red eyes (that's how we know they are cross roads demons - like high level demons' eyes are white (Lillith and Alastair)), but we've _never_ seen Crowley's eyes flash any color at all. There's been a lot of speculation in fandom about whether Crowley really IS a demon or if he's something else... so this was big!
ReplyDeleteThe producers have mentioned "re-using" Ty Olsson, figuring that it's been long enough since he played Eli that we wouldn't remember - there are only so many actors in Canada after all! LOL! I got the sense from the interviews that I have read that Benny is NOT meant to secretly be Eli. Kripke is no longer running or writing for the show. He stopped running the show after Season 5 and wrote his last episode for it in season 6. But I trust Jeremy Carver to be as careful with the story - though not about the Eli/Benny thing.
ReplyDeleteI really like your theory about Crowley having some design on Dean. I don't think he could have been using Benny as they couldn't access Purgatory before, but I do wonder how Benny knew about getting out... hmmmmmmm. Good theory!
Kinda brutal, and selfish, when you think about it. Dean was willing to kill Kevin's mom in order to kill Crowley, but not part with the car to help get the tablet.
ReplyDeleteExactly. I said it after last weeks episode and I'll say it again. I think there's something up with crowley
ReplyDeleteI don't think Dean abandoned Cas... at least not fully. Remember how Dean said Cas let go?
ReplyDeleteMaybe they're being chased, Cas is struggling to rise, and he literally lets go of Dean [after the brief struggle we saw of trying to get up the hill or whatever] And seeing Cas has given up [and whatever is coming after them is getting closer] perhaps even with a bit of forceful coaxing from Benny, Dean leaves Cas.
Cuz Dean does seem to feel guilty over what happened to Cas, but not 'I fed him to a pack of hungry Purgatory creatures to get away' guilty.
At the end, the tablet that Dean was supposedly ready to kill Kevins mom for drops while Crowley goes out of Kevins mom. WHY did Dean not run and grab the tablet?
ReplyDeleteOther than that..........oh and Dean getting a key (okay believable) and opening a door and NOTHING is said about it? The guards just look at him like *yeah, he has a key he shouldn't, but he is leaving with a terrible excuse*...........
Yeah, the purgatory scenes seem to be the best. in the episode and the red smoke was odd.....along with the red eyes, but then again, have we seen Crowley posses anyone until now?
