The season premiere
of Supernatural, “We Need to Talk
About Kevin”, was definitely worth waiting for. Jeremy Carver delivered a
tightly written script that packed the hour and set the stage for an exciting
season. Our classic rock and Impala were back! We have a new word-of-God
tablet-inspired title card! Having said that, I’m sure there is going to be
some dissention in the dedicated fanbase over some of the developments, but I’m
hoping that people will reserve judgment until the story has a chance to
unravel a bit more. I think that much of what we think we know at this point is
going to turn out to be not the actual truth.
I loved the opening sequence when
Dean (Jensen Ackles) comes back from Purgatory because it reminded me so
strongly of the opening to “Wendigo” in the first season. Only this time, Dean is the perfect hunter. We quickly
find out that Dean has come back with Benny (Ty Olsson) and that they share a
close... friendship? It may just be a friendship of convenience or it may turn
out to be more. I’m looking forward to finding out more about Benny. It’s
impossible to tell if he is a good guy or a bad guy or some shade of gray...
The call that Dean gets from him at the end of the episode had me thinking of
the call Dean makes to John in “Home.” I found it interesting that Benny calls
Dean “brother”. Dean seems to be clearly conflicted about his relationship with
Benny and almost seems guilty over it. He seems to either not want Sam to know
about it, perhaps because he’s ashamed of having teamed up with a “monster” or
maybe he’s protecting Sam from Benny. I also found it interesting that Benny
refers to Dean calling Purgatory pure and that’s the same explanation Dean
gives to Sam (Jared Padalecki). My interpretation is that it was pure in the
sense that Dean didn’t have to worry about figuring out who was good or bad or
somewhere in between: he just had to kill everyone because everyone was bad.
The rules were simple and Dean could give in to that part of himself that is,
as he described himself so often, a killer. For whatever reason, it seems that
Benny is not going to simply go his own way as seems to be their understanding
at the beginning of the episode.
I was disappointed in Sam’s not
having tried to find Dean, but I keep thinking there has to be more to it.
Certainly, Sam’s explanation to Dean made sense to me. I know I am in the
minority, but Sam finding a life outside hunting really makes a lot more sense
to me based on his character stretching all the way back to season one. Sam has
been the one searching for a normal life in the “Pilot”, “After School Special”,
and even last season’s “The Girl Next Door.” Sam’s entire argument was valid –
if they had both been killed in defeating Dick, somebody else would have had to
do those hunts during the last year anyway. When Dean finds that Kevin (Osric
Chau) had been calling Sam all year for help, Sam does look guilty. Another “throwback”
to Sam of season one is we get to see his smarts as he traces Kevin’s location
through Kevin’s computer use.
There are already rumblings that
people don’t like Amelia (Liane Balaban) and Benny because they take away from
the bond between Dean and Sam, but I can’t agree with that sentiment. As one
gets older – and these guys are getting older, despite how many times they’ve
died! – one’s relationship with their siblings change. Often this is for the
better, and it is almost always as a result of the other relationships that we
form in our lives. Dean is obviously hurt that Sam didn’t try to find him, but
they also fall back into hunting together again very quickly and comfortably. The
climactic fight scene demonstrates that Sam hasn’t lost his fighting edge and
the brothers still fight as a team. Sam is obviously concerned about Dean’s
state of mind, and Sam’s getting Dean a cheeseburger and fries is a touching
and subtle show of affection. It’s the little things after all...
Kevin was a perfect choice for
prophet and he demonstrates the uses of a superior intellect throughout the
episode. His defeat of and escape from Crowley (Mark Sheppard) is fantastic.
The quest to shut the gate to Hell permanently sets up a great quest for the
characters and having Crowley as part of the equation is going to make the
season so much fun...
The episode was expertly directed by
Robert Singer. The fight scenes and special effects were what we have simply
come to expect and be spoiled by. The subtle shifts in lighting and color to
delineate Purgatory, the present, and Sam’s flashbacks wonderfully captured the
mood of each setting. I want to make a particular point in commenting on the
wonderful performances in this episode. Ackles delivers a Dean who is as he
tells Sam, profoundly changed by his year in Purgatory. We see a perfect hunter
and a PTSD soldier. He’s completely confident in the fight and challenging
Crowley, but stymied by a vending machine. He’s pissed at his brother, but
still looking for his brother’s respect and understanding. There’s more going
on with Dean than in any other season we’ve seen so far. I may, however, been
even more impressed with Padalecki’s performance. I wanted to be as mad at him
for “abandoning” Dean as Dean was, but Padalecki’s performance made Sam compellingly
sympathetic. I think we are going to see that Sam’s new found peace was
actually hard won as the season unfolds.
Chau gives a terrific performance as
Kevin. I’ll admit that I liked Kevin last season, but I wasn’t completely on
board with him being such a big piece of the puzzle this season. I’m on board
now though. He does a great job of showing Kevin growing into being a prophet
and a hunter. He’s grown up since last season, and in many ways, especially
with him witnessing Channing’s death, he’s almost a season one Sam. He has great
chemistry with both Ackles and Padalecki, and I hope there will be a lot of
opportunity to see him interact with both.
We didn’t see much of either Balaban
or Olsson in this episode, but what we did see, I liked. Balaban played Amelia
as smart and tough. She’s not falling all over Sam, and I think that sets up
the possibility of a relationship pretty realistically. Olsson also shows a
range in his portrayal of Benny. There are definite differences between the
battle-hardened vampire in Purgatory and the vampire that is concerned about
Dean topside.
I’m really looking forward to having
the past year filled in via flashbacks until we have a better picture of what’s
really going on with the characters. I’m hoping that people will be patient and
not decide that Carver is mistreating one character or the other before he has
a chance to tell more of the story. And for the record, I was hoping for a
glimpse of Cas, but before everyone freaks out about that, I’d like to remind
viewers that Dean’s first concern was where his angel was and that he refused
to simply let Benny lead him out of Purgatory without finding Castiel first.
So, please sound off in the comments
below. But please, respect each others’ opinions and yes, even each others’
favorites. And perhaps most importantly, let’s all be patient. I think this was
a packed episode, but there are obviously lots of blanks to fill in in the
coming episodes!

I agree with just about everything. Liked it all I definitely think though Dean has an agenda to coming back. He seemed it looked a little like Dean liked purgatory as he said it was pure and benny misses it and dean doesnt say much but it looks like he kinda agreed. I think he really let his killer out and he cant put it back in now lol. Im fine with no Cas since they mentioned him and its good to know that in these flashbacks Cas is Dean's central concern. By the words of what Dean says to Sam, it seems Cas i dont think died because he's already died like what 4 times? I think its more emotionally and psychologically i think Cas maybe died inside or something. And he's probably still in purgatory. I like Sam's story but its not as interesting as dean.
ReplyDeleteIm worried Dean is turning to the darkside like he's friends with a vampire and by the looks of the funeral and talking 1 day at a time and stuff they have a plan and he doesnt care i bet anymore if benny is eating people since he needs to. Idk what dean's up to but im a little worried. Im happy tho Sam saved the dog lol and got a girl. Kevin and Crowley were great and closing the gates to hell forever sounds like an awesome story. If they can do it all that will be left will be monsters but i totally forgot until dean said it that demons they played more of the villain role than anything else. Demons r what killed their family, what they fought this entire series, even if their are monsters and leviathans demons represent the evil as winchesters and their friends represent good and it makes sense
I don't mind Amelia because she comes between Sam and Dean. Sam handled that task all by himself. I do mind a vet who makes no attempt to find the real owners of a hurt dog and who forces a man who admits he can't take care of a dog full time to take the dog anyway. For all she knew Sam is a violent man who abuses animals.
ReplyDeleteSam for me was completely and totally unsympathetic. He couldn't find Dean. Dean could have been blown a few states over and had amnesia but Sam didn't ask. There has been NO agreement they wouldn't look for each other, just that they wouldn't let the supernatural use them to retrieve each other. Even worse was ditching the phone that was Kevin's only contact for help while fighting demons. Sam comes off as self centered, selfish and worst of all that he doesn't love Dean. He wasn't even excited to see Dean after believing Dean was gone.
I do mind Amelia because a few hours after operating on a well cared for dog she pressures Sam into adopting it. She doesn't put out flyers looking for the owners. She doesn't check Craigslist for missing dogs, she doesn't even check with the pound to see if a pure bred Australian Shepard has been reported missing. She just accuses Sam of deliberately running down the dog then announces that he has to take it with him. Had she asked him to handle the vet bell she would have been fine, but ordering a man she knows nothing about to take an injured dog into his care is bad veterinary practice.
The Sam and Amelia parts ruined this episode for me. I made it thorough season four's Sam's story will be told in the background. I live through season five's Dean's reaction to being Michael's vessel is more traumatizing than Sam being Lucifer's vessel. I lived through Soulless Sam (I actually enjoyed SS). I live through an very disjointed season seven. I can not live through Sam the betrayer of Dean in season eight. I understand giving up hunting. I will never accept Sam giving up on Dean or giving up on Kevin.
Lots to like about the ep, but Sam not looking for Dean, not even trying, and not going after Kevin are so off the reservation, jump the shark out of character that it is tainting everything for me.
ReplyDeleteIf the writers / new showrunner understand so little about one of their main characters what hope do we have for the season?
I'm not remotely interested in what Dean did in Purgatory or what Sam did with Amelia as these are both separate stories and they don't interest me. So this season hasn't exactly got off on the right foot with me.
JC says all is not as it seems. All I can say it 'it better not be' because how it seems is unrecognisable.
''Another “throwback” to Sam of season one is we get to see his smarts as he traces Kevin’s location through Kevin’s computer use.''
ReplyDelete:) totally agree with that part! People have been complaining for a long time they the boys couldn't do anything on their own and Sam wasn't able to use a computer wisely since ...forever, and now they tracked down kevin smartly.
I agree with you for pretty much all the rest, I was disapointed too that Sam didn't try, but at some point I get it, and anyway I'm not gonna judge all season on that.
I was also glad to see Sam and kevin have their scene all alone between the 2 of them, for some time it's always been Dean and the guest star, its always fun to see Sam interact with others people. it's refreshing. I have a good feeling about S8
Was anybody else thrown off at the beginning when Sam leaves the house and goes to cabin. He made the reaction like he was leaving them forever but there was no reason for it? Did I miss something, it felt Like to me the writers where being lazy and couldn't come up with a good transition scene.
ReplyDeleteI noticed that too. I'm wondering if maybe we'll get it in a flashback. Cause if Dean never got a hold of him to tell him that he was back, he must have had some reason.
ReplyDeleteAlso did you see a shadow of someone watching him leave or was it just me?
Really great review!
ReplyDeleteI do agree with what you said about Sam not looking for Dean. When I read he was gonna settle down and then watching tonight's episode, it didn't really bother me. Sure it made me sad, but he had to do what he thought was right and best for himself.
I don't really have an opinion on Benny and Amelia yet, other than Amelia was kind of a B to Sam when they met, But I'm really looking forward to seeing more of them and their story in flashbacks.
Can't wait for next weeks episode and beyond! =D
Your post illustrates perfectly all the negativity I felt about the is upcoming season. JC was supposed to be the one who understood the Winchester world and especially Sam and Dean's relationship, and when I heard he was going to be showrunner I was really happy, but the way he has portrayed Sam here was not just awful, but mistaken too, based on past seasons.
ReplyDeleteSam had always searched for Dean and what they are trying to sell us here is nonsense.
while I understand your concerns, I actually thought Sam's behavious was quite well explained or at least beginning to be explained.I have a feeling we'll se more of why Sam did what he did, or didnt do in this case, the set up is certainly there. I aso felt that Sam's behavious was well countered by Dean's lying to his brother right off the bat. Neither of them came across as the bad guy or the good guy, just people who had reasons for doing what they had/were doing. I cant be pissed at Sam when Dean is clearly being a hypocritical bitch right to his face and I know thanks to Robert Singer that the tide of this 'who has the right to be angry at whom' game is going to shift as the season goes on. Basically Dean is going to be a dick to Sam all the while lying and going behind his back but as Dean's lies are exposed Sam will get his chance to say 'hang on a minute!'
ReplyDeleteAs you said the tide of who is being more hypocritical is going to shift over time (especially as it looks like Cas may have been purposely left in purgatory). But I'm not exactly sure who is being more hypocritical between the brothers seeing how Sam being more subtle on his hypocrisy than Dean's or did I miss the sorry I didn't look for you during the episode to both Dean and Kevin?
ReplyDeletePlus is a big difference between the pilot and this episode - Dean isn't exactly begging Sam to come along this time, he like him too and yes he envoked both their mother and Jess but he isn't begging Sam to stay. So it is more Sam's guilt that his keeping him there and that is Sam's thing not Dean's, even with Dean in his angry messed up lying state.
Now Dean has a right to be pissed about Sam not checking on Kevin (though if Sam had said in the beginning that he had met someone and that played into the quitting hunting Dean actually may have been okay with it considering his aborted attempt with Lisa.). But that didn't stop Dean asking 'We' when Sam said that they should go after Kevin. Sam said in the motel room that he doesn't need Dean to understand why he gave things up for a girl but then vented his spleen about his brother needing to know about finding 'something he never had before'. As if Dean had never had that urge before.
But then he said about Dean being the only one who was allowed free will before walking in there to tell Kevin things are bad but they get better when five minutes before he went on about Kevin not getting out intacted. Does that mean Dean might not be right to use Kevin to get revenge but it is alright for Sam to use his free will to lie to Kevin about the probable outcome of this? Or was a lot of his 'it gets better speech' more about justifying himself while manipulating Kevin?
But none of that changes that Dean isn't exactly stopping him from walking away this time even if he would be pissed about it.
..absolutely AGREE the best review ever write for the first episode season opener of supernatural
ReplyDeleteI think this is definitely all going to play out in flashback. Sam tells Dean that Amelia is out of his life - or at least hints that that is the case when they are talking in the motel. I think they want to keep us a bit in the dark just yet as to what Sam's real relationship status with Amelia is....
ReplyDeleteNo! I saw the shadow too! I'm really curious to know who is watching Sam... a demon keeping tabs on him maybe? Or could it have been Benny? Or was the mysterious watcher watching Amelia???
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! I thought Sam's speech about not wanting to pursue what got his whole family killed - and all their friends - was really powerful. I remember being so angry when Sam chose Ruby over Dean, but this felt completely different.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
ReplyDeleteI actually think this is thoughtfully in character for Sam - based on his desire for normal as expressed in the Pilot, After School Special, The Girl Next Door, and Dark Side of the Moon. Heck, in Dark Side of the Moon we learn that he even had a dog (Bones) for two weeks! I like the comments below too about how Dean is also not being very forthcoming about what is going on with him. I think he's posturing a lot here - making Sam feel guilty so he'll ask fewer questions about what Dean did in Purgatory - or when and how he got out...
ReplyDeletePlease see my comment above - I think JC actually relied on episodes like the Pilot, After School Special, Dark Side of the Moon, and The Girl Next Door... I also really agree with tvmonkey's comment's below. I think there's a lot more to come!
ReplyDeleteAgree!
ReplyDelete..what you think about the opening show credits..for me awesome I got two favorites by far 1) crystal broken 2) THE FIRE ( REMIND ME OF THE PHOENIX BIRD REBORN FROM THE ASHES) like the kind of relation the brother will have. From: Disqus Sent: Thursday, October 04, 2012 6:46 AM

I think there's going to be a lot more to this than meets the eye... First, I adore how much concern you have for the dog! I really hadn't given it that much thought, but here are a few possible thoughts....As for Amelia just giving away a dog, we don't know what she or her assistant may have done to locate an owner. Amelia seems pretty confident that the dog had no owner - maybe they did do a search? Maybe she's the only vet in town? I would assume that if someone actually brought the dog in after hitting him and stayed to make sure he was alright that the person would be a good owner - or would be responsible enough to find the dog a good home? I also assumed that Sam had already taken care of the bill...
ReplyDeleteI think I always like the new title cards! GREAT theory about it being like a phoenix though - I hadn't thought of that at all...
ReplyDeleteSorry, but to try and explain Sam's behaviour by harking back to a time when he was much younger and still filled with ambitions for a different kind of life, are illogical.
ReplyDeleteThat was another Sam.
The actual Sam had accepted his lot as a hunter and was even at peace with it.
X
Apart from that, in any imaginable scenario, Sam would not have given up on his brother like that, and even if there are ulterior explanations in future episodes they can never compensate for it .
X
Of course it is now obvious that Sam's character has to morph into whatever the writers need for him to be at any given moment, never being able to have a well-defined character of his own.
The phrase you wrote, "Sam is obviously concerned about Dean’s state of mind, and Sam’s getting Dean a cheeseburger and fries is a touching and subtle show of affection. It’s the little things after all.." is rather ironic!
Getting him food may be a wonderful sign of Sam's affection and concern for Dean; however it can't be denied that thanks to the writers, there wasn't much affection in him when he didn't bother his shirt-tail looking for that brother that he had so cared for up to the end of season seven.
X
It's Sam who should have been interested in finding his brother and in fighting to get him back. The addition of this Benny person was unnecessary as was the Amelia persona.
Having said all that I hope the show has a great success and that the writers have a change of heart and try to repair the damage they are doing to Sam and to all those fans who enjoy seeing the brothers working together and not paired up with strangers.
The fact that Dean is behaving badly and lying, cannot compensate for what the writers have made Sam do. Abandon the search for his brother.
ReplyDeleteX
We're supposed to believe that he had no idea where to look, and that is just ridiculous, as pre-season eight Sam would have known exactly what to do!
If Sam had been hit by a car and ended up in hospital with amnesia or in a coma, I would have had no problem with that ,but I do with what we are being asked to believe here.!
Then i still can't understand why having the brothers take a go at one another makes for this great dramatic situation. It certainly doesn't for me.
X
They are supposed to be a team. "You and me against the world" was once their motto!
Another year has passed me by
ReplyDeleteStill I look at myself and cry
What kind of man have I become?
All of the years I've spent in search of myself
And I'm still in the dark
'Cause I can't seem to find the light alone
Sometimes I feel like a man in the wilderness
I'm a lonely soldier off to war
Sent away to die, never quite knowing why
Sometimes it makes no sense at all
Makes no sense at all
The music is truly one of the most defining elements of this show. Glad that the rock n roll and the Impala are back. And I just really want to know everything about Purgatory. Wow, Benny's relationship with Dean is truly captivating. Please, please... just tell me that the last two seasons were just a bad dream.
I agree there is a lot more to come and that Sam went through a lot to get where he is now but I am interested to see how Dean deals with Sam's new found peace stemming from things getting better after Dean became trapped.(as he told Kevin)
ReplyDeleteIt is one thing to find someone you care about becoming happy after they meet someone but another when they feel their happiness is in any part the removal of you from their life and Sam not looking for his brother must in part feel like that for Dean and that when you are not 100% in a good place is not something that is going to sit well.
I'm a pet person. They showed Sam waiting to hear about the dog while still in his bloody clothes. The waiting alone makes me think he just held out until the operation was over and he found out the condition of the dog. My reaction is also because I have a friend with a vet, and really there is no way she would just give a dog to a total stranger without even seeing if someone claimed them first. But it is really nitpicky, I agree.
ReplyDeleteThe one pro for the "It gets better speech" is that it implies that Sam really did get better and find a way out of hunting and that Kevin doesn't have to abandon all ideas of a normal life. If they close the gates of Hell, the demons should leave him alone. If they don't find any more Words of God, then his days as a prophet will be over and he can move on. Kevin does have a chance of getting out of all of this. It may be slight, but he has a better chance than Dean or even Sam really.
ReplyDeleteSam stopped craving "normal" about the time John died in season 2. The pilot and childhood flashbacks in ASS and DSOTM reflect a wish that Sam had prior to season 2. I thought Sam's appeal to Dean in The Girl Next Door showed that Sam had finally truly accepted the "freak/monster" part of himself - the opposite of what you are saying.
ReplyDeleteYep! Dean could have eaten kittens and puppies in Purgatory and I wouldn't blame him. He could have killed Cas as a way to escape, and I would say you do what you have to to survive. Nothing trumps sitting in a comfy home and not even trying to see what happened to your last remaining family.
ReplyDeleteI don't disagree with Sam giving up hunting. I don't see him abandoning Dean and Kevin to do it. I can live with Sam deciding that once they close the Gates of Hell he is done. I can live with him having a stable home and a place for Dean to come and recharge if Dean wants to, although with the differences in personality, I think they would drift apart and Dean would never show. But not looking for Dean is one step too far in the Sam characterization. The only time he didn't "look for Dean" was when Dean was hunting with John and as far as Sam knew they were looking after each other. This scenario just stinks.
ReplyDeleteIf there hadn't been the set up before hand with Sam going on about free will and the flashback on Sam's meeting Amelia while Dean listened I'd agree with you but they were all there.
ReplyDeleteKevin had been in hiding since he escaped so I took that he got that he understood that sealing the gates of hell was his out and he took out of Sam's it gets better speech was that this was going to be hard but your not alone so there is light at the end of the tunnel. What I took from Sam with the speech coupled with the scene before and the flashback was him justifying to himself that he did the right thing over the past year and what I got from Dean standing listening to Sam's speech and his whole reaction to Sam earlier was 'Things got better for Sam and that was to do with me not being in the picture in anyway shape or form'
Well Sam has persistently been written as the bad person and the bad brother whose existence only hurts Dean. Frankly, a lot of the show rests on the premise that if Sam had been strangled at birth, it would have been better for everyone.
ReplyDelete..for me represent how deep, broken, separated these brothers are the episode shows the breach is like the marianas trench no one knows even machines cant touch the bottom because I saw the episode for second time if I miss something important but don’t. hidden .secrets is the key those two don’t like share any kind of hurting of experience that’s the plots is were problems began to surface Disqus Sent: Thursday, October 04, 2012 7:11 AM

The problem I have with all this is not so much what the Winchesters will do in the future for that is still to be written, but it's the fact that these two brothers have always been willing to do anything for each other, coming right out and saying it in words, even Dean who hates chick-flick moments; ready to give up their lives if it would help the other,
ReplyDeletex
Where has all that love and caring gone? Has it now been cancelled as though it has never been; sacrificed on the altar of "maturity" and "normal?"
X
They can turn it around however they want, but Sam Winchester would never have behaved as the writers have made him. Not ever!
Way, way back in Season One, Sam said these words:-
ReplyDelete"People just don't disappear, Dean. Other people just stop looking for them!"
Seven years later, Sam's brother disappears and he just stops looking for him-
Strange how things turn out!
X
I think the writers should have been made to watch the show from season one and take notes before writing for this new season!
Personally I don't think Sam has been written as a bad brother but consistently as an angry little one, just like Dean has consistently been written as an overbearing older one. Just as Dean's previous defaults were to put mission/family before himself even if they don't like his methods, Sam's previous defaults were to run away, get angry, cling to someone who made him feel better (whether that was Ruby or Dean).
ReplyDeleteIt was very little brother like, but this time instead of Dean swallowing the pain he is feeling from his brother not looking for him and Sam deflecting by saying someone else was involved in pushing his choices. Dean is actually saying he is pissed (granted a lot seems to be PTSD) and Sam is saying the choice to get out of hunting was his and dealing that his decision hurt his brother and Kevin (because really the only person that implied that Dean was dead was Crowley).
It is interesting to see how that dynamic will play out and how it will effect their co-dependency thing especially seeing that Sam leaving Amelia in the middle of the night does not appear to be triggered by Dean's reappearence seeing how he says he didn't get Dean's messages.
As for the implication about Sam being strangled at birth - I think that was actually said at one point in changing channels in the Japanese quiz thing and he said Yes
Awesome review, Lisa.
ReplyDeleteI always look forward to hearing your thoughts and insights into our boys and the show!
I was generally pleased with the episode, and believe both boys were portrayed pretty accurately for what they have been through in the past year.
I know most people probably think Sam is a jerk for not searching for Dean, but I think as the season goes on we'll see how lost Sam truly was without Dean. I for one thought it was very telling that Sam took the time to repair the Impala, Dean's baby, instead of leaving it behind. He fixed it, his words, he didn't take it to a repair shop. He was keeping a part of his brother with him instead of getting another car which would have been a hell of a lot easier seeing as Sam was never the one to work on cars. And then he wandered, lost. No Dean. No Bobby. No Cas.
I think Crowley's last words to Sam last season had a profound effect on him. For the first time ever there was no Bobby to turn to, no Cas. How many times can a person lose someone they love before they say I don't want to do this anymore - there has to be something better out there?
Yet, he left his new world behind, and went back to Dean the moment he knew he was alive. Also very telling. He'd made a life for himself, was probably happy, but it wasn't enough to fill the hole left behind by his brother being gone. And as you said, Lisa, he fell back into hunting as if he'd never left it behind. Almost as if he knew at some point he would go back to it, and kept in practice even if he wasn't hunting.
Now for Dean. I believe he portrayed a soldier who knew nothing but war for the last year beautifully. And I believe we'll see a darker side to him this coming season. I for one am looking forward to seeing how he adjusts to his life now.
In the scene where the two little boys are playing with guns, I couldn't help but think of Sam and Dean as little boys, only instead of playing they were already hunting, and it made me sad for the childhood they'd lost because of the lives they lead. In the past this scene might have made Dean think of their childhood, but now it makes him think of his struggles to survive in purgatory, and I think that shows how lost he is from what he used to be.
I am really looking forward to learning more about Dean's time in purgatory, and also am interested to see how Sam spent his year alone. All in all, I think it was an exciting first episode, and helps me remember why I love this show so much.
total crap dude. Sam said why he didnt didnt u hear him and JC actually made that just like sam and dean from all the seasons he kept to to the character. Sam didnt look because he couldnt he realized he was all alone for the first time and nothing to go on just drove. Dean also is the one that always said that even though they didnt listen to their deals of not looking for each other they need to. Dean knew it was what he's always wanted for sam but i guess that he was still blinded by it that he didnt think about it. JC is doing an excellent job for a start and GIVE HIM A CHANCE! IT'S ONE EPISODE let him continue with the flashbacks and story geez.
ReplyDeletei agree with the review. and yes, Dean does appear to have just come back from an extended war behind enemy lines (alert, vigilant, on edge, not sleeping, refusing food, focused on the 'job', armed and ready to go) while Sam, well, there's something about Sam (i have a theory) and Castiel 'giving in' and 'not making it' (well, i definitely have a theory about that)
ReplyDeleteI am in violent agreement with you on this one!! No matter how old I get, or how difficult life becomes, there's one thing that will never change & that's....My love for my sister(s). Time & maturity only makes that bond stronger. I hope & pray that things are not as they seem because, they seem pretty grimm to me.
ReplyDeletewhats your theory?
ReplyDeleteOh I hadn't thought about them watching Amelia, that could be interesting. So many questions! =]
ReplyDeleteYeah Sam's choice was definitely different from the Winchester normal way (as Dean said) They've often been driven to hunting because of a need for revenge. But I do have to say that it makes me happy that Sam didn't go into revenge mode, because nothing good ever happens after he does (ex. Ruby)
ReplyDeleteI was mad when he chose Ruby too, but your right, this feels different to me than then.
I think it was Benny watching Sam leave his house. It looked like the person was wearing a wool coat with the collar turned up. At the end of the show when Dean was talking to Benny, Benny was wearing a pea coat. I'd like to know where the archangel is that's supposed to protect Kevin the Prophet from demons? It appears that Crowley and every other demon has an all access pass to Kevin.
ReplyDeleteGotta say, to me it didn't seem like Dean was protecting Sam from Benny. I almost got the idea that he's protecting Benny from Sam, and from Dean's lifestyle. Sam /would/ likely hunt Benny down regardless if he knew, and Dean might not want that. I get the impression that Benny really is Dean's friend (the way they hug and Dean grins speaks to me of of a brotherly bond).
ReplyDeleteWhat I desparately wanna know at this point is... How long were they truly in purgatory? If purgatory is at all like heaven or hell, just how many years did it seem like in that one stretch? For all we know, Dean's felt decades pass, and Benny was one of his greatest friends and comrads in Purgatory for even longer then Dean's known Sam, his own brother.
Even though the relationships seem a bit more mature this time round and that is normal (what with Dean actually voicing his emotions a little instead of hitting and Sam standing and dealing with it instead of finding someway to run away or deflect) I don't think too much will be scarficed on that alter.

Now I get we have a angry pissed Dean, who seems to be that affected by PSTD that he is not sleeping, has a hard time eating but also appears not to be drinking seeing how the actual beers per brother this episode seemed to equal each other. But with that is barking at people, not trusting anyone (considering he didn't think the burger was his at first - but when has Sam had a burger?) and isn't being completely forth coming about Cas and the Vampire, which isn't good or normal.

Also we have a Sam who skips out on his girlfriend in the middle of the night when she is asleep, which if he never got Dean's messages has nothing to do with his hunting life. But even if it did as ways to get out of 'something he never had before' it is up there with the maturity of that post it in sex and the city.
Perhaps things will be explained better in future episodes, but the fact of Sam not searching for his brother is such a big obstacle to overcome, for it's just not how Sam would behave.

Now if there is an ulterior motive such as him being blackmailed or controlled by some entity ( or even by Amelia ) that forced him not to look for his brother and has some hold over him, that would change everything; but as it stands Sam is the bad selfish brother again and Dean who had to fight for life and limb in Purgatory will come over as the good brother.
I just think this is being completely unfair to Sam and is a bad story-line for him.
I don't think there was something controlling him as much as part of the reason he didn't look was he didn't know where to start - Dean said did look at ways to help Sam when he was in the cage, but he had books and asupport system to go with before he gave up and tried harder with Lisa. The best Sam when Dean was gone would have had at that point was Jody Mills and Garth seeing how the boys entire support system was smashed and it was Dean who always seemed to have more the contacts in that world.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't exactly excuse it but it does make it understandable but the abandoning Kevin through simply not picking up a phone to me isn't. But as I said I don't see Sam so much apologising for either as continually justifying why he did it - which in some ways is fine in a lot of ways as it is Sam's life. But the good thing about him doing it is that not only does Dean's reaction does get to him it shows that both boys want the understanding and support of the other though it seems that they level they want it on this time round is going to be a lot different than before, and I think that will be the same for Dean once he starts opening up about what happened in purgatory.
Plus both are going to have to deal with the fact on a lot of levels they are being hypocritical seeing how neither one was exactly 100% truthful about what was going on with them in the first one. Though Dean's relutance to be forthcoming seems more understandable at this point.
Sam left hunting and Dean and told Bobby he could not help when Demons were in the area. Left it up to 3 other hunters, so maybe the same thing was going on. He lost EVERYONE he ever cared about and just said hell with it. Fixed Baby as a way to keep Dean close. I am looking forward to seeing how this season plays out, but loved the first ep..Go JC.
ReplyDeleteSam's behavior is "well explained" by the writers, so you can't be pissed at him. However Dean's being a "hypocritical bitch, a dick, and a liar" ... so it's okay to be pissed at Dean, but not Sam?
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you about Amelia. No vet would ever handle the situation as she did. She was totally unfair to Sam, and didn't seem to really care that the dog may have simply been lost and had owners who were looking for it.
ReplyDeleteBut why would Sam automatically hunt Benny down just because he's a vampire? Lenore was a vampire and Sam protected her. Sam has always been the one to chastise Dean for not seeing the gray in situations with monsters. And Dean had to admit Sam was right about that. Both Sam and Dean allowed the Alpha Vamp to live. Sam didn't hunt him down while Dean was gone, allowing him to keep on killing people.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Dean is protecting Benny from Sam, but, I think it would be hypocritical of Sam to hunt Benny, especially IF he hasn't killed anyone.
Sam's always seen the gray, but in the last season that issue cropped up two times, and both Dean and Sam dealt with it by killing the monster. Either way.. I don't know. I just don't see it as Dean protecting Sam from Benny, whatever else is going on.
ReplyDelete..absolutely AGREE the best review ever write for the first episode season opener of supernatural
