Monday number three of the 2012 TV season was yesterday, and things are starting to show signs of settling down from all the hypes surrounding the various shows and the fallout from their premieres.

On NBC at 8pm, The Voice had its strongest rating episode since the season officially began, drawing in 12.89 million viewers and a 4.8 18/49 rating in the two hours to 10pm. As usual, ABC aired its All Stars Dancing With The Stars competition, but the ratings certainly wouldn't have put stars in the eyes of the ABC executives. Despite pulling the better part of a million more viewers than The Voice did, DWTS managed just a 2.2 rating. More on that later. On FOX, Bones pulled in a season low 2.0 rating, but audience numbers were slightly up on last week, with 7.20 million viewers tuning in. How I Met Your Mother on CBS drew in the third highest rating of the night, a 3.1, and 7.82 million viewers for its half hour. It led in new series Partners, which managed a 1.9 rating and 5.71 million viewers, slightly down on last week

At 9pm, DWTS and The Voice continue on their respective networks, but 2 Broke Girls on CBS managed a 3.4 rating, down 0.1 from last week, but still enough to be second best in ratings for the evening, and 9.42 million viewers, which is up on last week. However things are looking less and less positive for freshman series The Mob Doctor on FOX, falling below the 1.0 rating from last week, to a new season low 0.9 rating, and a pitiful 3.36 million viewers. I think this series is definitely one of the better new series this season, but FOX can only blame themselves for a shocking scheduling decision. I've said that several times now, unfortunately. Back to CBS, where at 9:30pm, Mike & Molly drew in a 2.8 rating and 8.67 million viewers. Like its lead-in, 2 Broke Girls, Mike & Molly was down 0.1 on last weeks rating, but up slightly in audience numbers

The 10pm slot brought the most interesting surprise of the night, with ABC's Castle equaling Dancing With The Stars rating. This is the first time in the show's history that it's managed to do this, it came just short on October 31 last year. Castle's final rating was a 2.2. What's more, last nights episode beat both the premiere, and last weeks episode, by 0.1 and 0.3 of a ratings point respectively, The audience numbers were also up on the premiere and last weeks episode, with 10.61 million viewers tuning in. If all that wasn't enough, it's the first time the third episode of a season has beaten the second episode of the season, and of course the premiere episode of a season. Good news no matter how you look at it.
On NBC, Revolution continues its steady decline since its premiere on September 17, with a 3.0 rating and 8.01 million viewers. The curve on the graph on this page looks to be leveling out, so the performance of next weeks episode will be interesting. On CBS, Hawaii Five-0 was, like it's lead-ins, down 0.1 of a ratings point on last week, but up around 400,000 viewers, on last week, to 8.39 million viewers. This audience is also a season high

So all in all, an interesting night, with the biggest surprise being, as I said, Castle equaling DWTS's lead-in rating. Could this mean DWTS is more at risk of being canceled than Castle for next season?? It would seem too good to be true. Next weeks ratings performance will definitely provide more evidence for a more accurate answer

Also next week, FOX's Bones and The Mob Doctor take a four week break, returning on November 5. Where the viewers for both those shows decide to go in the meantime will be interesting, but most likely tricky to detect, considering, especially in the case of The Mob Doctor, the comparatively small audience size, with Bones pulling the third smallest audience, and The Mob Doctor the smallest audience, in last nights numbers (excluding the CW network)

I'll finish up with a couple of graphs, the season 3 and 4 ratings graphs for Castle. On them, you can easily pick which lead-in points are DWTS and which aren't, but if you have a look at the current graph for this season here, you certainly couldn't tell them apart if you didn't know which was which

  1. Go Castle! And to think, so many people were needlessly worried after episode 2.

  2. WooHOOOOO Castle!!!! I still remember a time when the show was on the bubble...

  3. i think viewers are seeing that the moonlighting curse doesn't exist and also they are seeing that AM isn't pulling the rug, meaning he isn't tearing them apart like he has so many times before. I think a lot of casual viewers were concerned AM was just going to find another way to keep them apart this season. Next week's episode seriously looks like one of the best so far this season, plus we have never seen Kate so revealing, literally before.

  4. yeah finally they can get rid of Dancing with the Stars...Castle is one of the only shows that doesn't even need any promos on tv to advertise it. It has loyal fans and we tune in no matter what the episode is about. We also have a loyal fandom on Facebook and we share links of sneak peeks and what not. Castle can stand on its own, its always been the most dominant show on Monday nights with no contest. This talk of cancellation is just fluff. If anything, Bones should be cancelled, if you put Castle on Fox easily 15 million viewers a week. but 10.61 is still amazing.

  5. Really interesting stats, I like graphs and stuff, I'm a geek like that XD I'm from the Netherlands myself so whatever I do has no effect on anything, but over here Castle has a large following too. I used to watch Bones, but I stopped after the season 6 ending. I'm sure it still has it's merits, but I think that show's just nearing it's end.

I'm giving castle 6/7 seasons I think that should be enough to wrap it up and go out on a high note. Either way, Castle matching DWTS ratings wise is really good news no matter how you look at it, and I have high hopes for the Hamptons episode.

  6. well it;s not really. Ideally, you'd want DWTS to stay strong, and for Castle to grow to meet it. That didn't happen in this case, because DWTS is heading downhill and has been for years. So Castle effectively meandered along and caught up mostly thanks to DWTS. I think that makes sense

  7. I was needlessly worried, but I am traumatized since many of my favorite shows were/are always on the verge of being cancelled... Worrying is almost instinctive :)

I don't think Castle has meandered along I think it has picked up a very solid and loyal fan base...point and case...all the comments are about Castle :)

  9. There's no denying the loyal fanbase - don't get me wrong because I'm one of them. But the ratings aren't what they used to be, despite the audience being strong. This is the same, but far worse in comparison, for DWTS. Again, Castle hasn't experienced a ratings increase on last season or the season before that, it's dropped gradually over that period. But DWTS has experienced a far heavier drop over the same time period as Castle. This isn't a good thing for ABC, and not necessarily for Castle because Castle historically does better with DWTS as a lead-in. Good lead-ins mean good ratings for the show. What this drop for DWTS does prove, however, is that Castle can still do ok in ratings whether DWTS performs or not.

  10. Excuse me but Castle is a knock off of Bones! Bones has to contend with tough competition--unlike Castle!

  11. Can we not with this? I love both shows. Despite the "Author follows cop around and helps solve crimes" aspect, they are not alike at all. Castle is not a knock-off of Bones.

Both shows are great in their own rights and this little fandom war needs to end.

  12. No, Bones shouldn't be cancelled. Both Bones and Castle are great, and this stupid fight between the fandoms needs to end immediately. It's annoying beyond belief.

  13. Ugh, this again? Both Castle and Bones are great shows in their own right. Bones shouldn't be cancelled because it's a good show.

And this little fandom war between the two shows needs to end soon. It's annoying and drives people crazy, especially when they love both shows, like me.

  14. Tough competition? Really?! Well, let me remind you Castle compets against Revolution (a new show with a strong lead in The Voice) AND Hawai 5.0... isn´t that tough enough?
And btw, I like Bones too, but love Castle...

  15. Hey, I watch both, but I don't like to see people diss Bones. And I am passionate about Bones, but just like Castle--although I wouldn't suggest they cancel Castle.

  16. Well, Bones has to compete against DWTS and the Voice and break into a new night and time. Revolution had a head start and was new and had a zillion promos during the Olympics, so people checked it out. I don't know that Revolution will last, however. It's already slipping. So I don't think Castle has much to contend with at this point. And I like Castle, but don't mess with my Bones!

  17. Castle makes boat loads of money for ABC becaust its ABC owned, no profit sharing with the networks....It has book sales, DVD sales through the roof and online views plus you pay for Hulu Plus. And it has a coffee coming out or might already be out. Not to mention its already in syndication and makes a ton of money for ABC and TNT on Wednesdays. The fact that its above a 2.0 demo live is great and it just gets adjusted up due to DVR playback as well. Consistent fan base live, and loyal fanbase through products and DVR. Its not going anywhere. ABC can't find a show to put in the 10 pm slot that would do better if not touch Castle's ratings. not every household does Nielsen so its outdated and useless. If ABC was stupid and pulled Castle it would lose 13 million viewers and the network is already hurting as it is..
