-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS remains the network to beat on Tuesday care of its combination of NCIS (#1: 11.8 rating/19 share), spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles (#1t: 9.2/14) and week two of Dennis Quaid/Michael Chiklis drama Vegas (#1: 7.7/13). Comparably, the NCIS duo was on par from one year earlier, as was Vegas versus year-ago occupant Unforgettable. But week-to-week, Vegas slipped by 18 percent in the overnights (versus a 9.4/16 on Sept. 25, which translated into 14.85 million viewers and a 2.5 rating/ 7 share among adults 18-49 according to the Live Plus Same Day results). Keep in mind that most new shows drop in the vicinity of 10 to 20 percent in week two (and another estimated 10 percent in week three), so this is nothing unusual.
Second-place ABC was on the map care of two hours of Dancing With the Stars. The 8 p.m. clips show (themed All-Stars Defining Dances) finished second with a 7.1/11 in the overnights, which was 16 percent above a recap edition of The Voice on NBC (#: 6.1/10). And the live Results Show followed with a 9.2/14 at 9 p.m., which tied competing NCIS: Los Angeles on CBS. Compared to one year earlier (11.0/17 on 10/04/11), still potent Dancing With the Stars dropped by 16 percent.
At 10 p.m. on ABC was Private Practice at a second-place 4.8/ 8, which trailed year-ago occupant Body of Proof (7.4/12 on 10/04/11) by a hefty 35 percent.
Over at NBC, the aforementioned clips edition of The Voice (#3: 6.1/10 at 8 p.m.) was, of course, not as strong as the regularly scheduled edition. But compared to the first hour of The Biggest Loser one year earlier (3.5/ 6 on 10/04/11), this was still up by a hefty 64 percent. Next on the Peacock net was the just renewed sitcom combination of Go On (#3: 4.4/ 7) and The New Normal (#3: 3.9/ 6) from 9-10 p.m., which lost some steam out of the Voice clips show. But the pair, on average, outdelivered the second half of year-ago occupant The Biggest Loser (3.6/ 6 on 10/04/11) by nine percent. And they bested competing Fox sitcoms New Girl (#4: 3.8/ 6) and The Mindy Project (#4: 2.6/ 4) by 30 percent. The real test, of course, is to see how they fared demographically.
At 10 p.m., Parenthood on NBC finished third with a 3.6/ 6, which was equal to one year earlier. As always, the competitive gap among adults 18-49 will not be as wide.
Fox, unfortunately, has sprung a large Tuesday leak. Season three of new anchor Raising Hope opened with a fourth-place 2.9/ 5 in the overnights at 8 p.m., which comparably was off by 38 percent from its year-ago Tuesday 9:30 p.m. season-premiere out of New Girl (4.7/ 9 on 9/20/11). Week two of sitcom Ben & Kate followed with a 2.3/ 4 at 8:30 p.m., which was 21 percent below its week-ago opener (2.9/ 4 on Sept. 25) when it aired out of the season-premiere of New Girl. Raising Hope and Ben & Kate, on average, trailed year-ago occupant Glee (6.1/10 on 10/04/11) by a significant 57 percent.
Next on Fox was aforementioned New Girl at a fourth-place 3.8/ 6 at 9 p.m., which year-to-year slipped by a noticeable 37 percent (versus a 6.0/ 9 on 10/04/11). And the 2.6/ 4 for The Mindy Project at 9:30 p.m. (#4) was down by 21 percent from the week-ago opener (3.3/ 5 on Sept. 25) and off by 38 percent from Raising Hope one year earlier (4.2/ 6 on 10/04/11). The strength of the Fox comedies, no doubt, falls within the young demographics. By overall slippage of 17 percent week-to-week does not bode well.
In season-premiere news, Hart of Dixie on The CW opened with a fifth-place 1.2/ 2 at 8 p.m., which was equal to 90210 on the year-ago evening. But one year earlier, Hart of Dixie launched with a 1.7/ 2 in the overnights on Monday 9/26/11 at 9 p.m. (out of Gossip Girl). Next on The CW was flop singing competition The Next at a mere 0.5/ 1 at 9 p.m. And there you have it…the overnights for this second Tuesday of the new TV season.

Good for NCIS and Go On, but I really like The Mindy Project. I don't want it to get cancelled!
ReplyDeleteI'm curous as to how HOD, I predict a 0.7 and 1.6 million viewers.
ReplyDeleteI thought they said this morning Vegas was a flop, yet here with Berman it won??? I have to find the article i read..
ReplyDeleteIt seems to be another older skewing audience, only a 2.1 but with a fairly heafty audience size 12.10 million viewers.
ReplyDeleteNot a good ratings night...
ReplyDeleteVegas had the highest total viewership of any new series so far as I recall....
ReplyDeleteOf course that counts for less than the key demo, but being the most watched new show means it is not a flop to any sane person. XD
I saw ads on CBS the other day for Vegas touting it as the #! new show this season... So CBS certainly does not think it is a flop.... for now at least.
Gah so annoyed Ben and Kate is a great show, not sure why its failed where other (unfunny) comedies have succeeded this year.
ReplyDeleteNCIS is the big winner. Good. At least Tuesdays still make sense. Though New Girl isn't looking that good.
ReplyDeleteLOL,i'm starting to think i dreamed it!! I swear i read that somewhere????? I even looked for it and couldn't find it....strange. :P
ReplyDeleteIT would not surprise me. Some people look at just the demo number and ignore everything else.
ReplyDeleteCBS shows always skew older and have lower key demo marks than any other network with the same total viewership numbers and yet CBS has been doing "ok" for itself the past few years. XD
I'm not saying a show with a 2.1 demo rating is safe without question, but when you look at the network, the overall numbers, their options and past patterns it looks to be fairly safe as long as it does not slide too much.
It must mean something that CBS declared Vegas the #1 new show despite Elementary having better demo numbers (3.1 compared to Vegas 2.5 for the pilot) and total viewers just behind the 14.7 million of Vegas at 13.2 million.
Some people think Vegas could and (maybe should) move to Fridays and pair with Blue Bloods.
ReplyDeleteWow cant believe you got it right.
ReplyDeleteThose ratings look good for HOD.
Its pretty solid, could have been so much worse considering this is the CW we're talking about.
ReplyDeleteI predict SPN will get around a 0.7/0.8 and around 1.8-1.9 million viewers tonight. 1.1 Live +7 DVR but we'll have to wait to find out those DVR results for a while. I also think HOD got a 1.1 Live +7.
So I guess if you didn't have NCIS in your name, you really didn't do that well last night.
ReplyDeleteCBS can spin all they want, its a flop.
ReplyDeleteNCIS is Always a big winner,i can't remember the last time they had low numbers..you don't have to worry about them..
ReplyDeletePrivate Practice hitting a series low is actually a blessing. Shonda & writers are still making noises that the show can go on beyond Kate Walsh's departure when it's time they started planning the rest of the season for a series finale.
ReplyDeleteNow they know. This is lower than it ever did in that time slot. It is time to let it go with a series finale that respects its viewers.
Exactly. NCIS is still the one show I dont have to worry about, that's what I meant with 'Tuesdays still make sense'. Mondays,on the other hand,no longer make sense cause the Castle ratings are very low.
ReplyDeleteAh,sorry i read it as relief that it had done well! :)
ReplyDeleteCastle, could be a few things, give it a few more weeks before getting anxious..
LOL,I guess I am overreacting. Its just that, unlike most of my shows,Castle is supposed to be a sure thing. And this ratings drop right after Castle and Beckett got together makes me worry that they'll pull the plug on the show before we get to see more of this new dynamic I'm enjoying so much.
ReplyDeleteExactly when it's on CW you are used to 0.5 to 0.7 is good for now (we will see how the other shows do).
ReplyDeleteAs for Supernatural, that sounds about right, we shall see :)
Nah,they aren't going to pull the plug. You just have to remember many people have waited so long to see them get together, and to also see about her mothers murder, that's one of the reasons why the numbers were so good last season...
ReplyDeleteThese last two episodes sort of remind me of Bones.Booth and Brennan had little stumbles along the way once they came back from hiatus it took a little adjustment but they are right back where they use to be...
Vegas, Blue Bloods and CSI: NY might not actually be a bad combo for Friday Nights. Not sure what I think about Vegas so far. 1st episode was rather slow, but I have no complaints about the acting. It would make more sense (imho), to pair H50 with the 2 big boys (NCIS / NCIS:LA), since they've shown that H50 exists within the same "universe" due to crossovers between shows.
ReplyDeleteAgree 100% with this. I love the show, but it would get canceled anyway, I prefer they do a proper ending they try to drag it without kate and then have it canceled without proper resolution for the other characters. Just write a series finale
ReplyDeletenot much competition tonight so maybe the CW will luck out?
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to seeing how the new shows do.
It certainly is something that a show with stars such as Dennis Quaid and Chiklis gets relegated to the friday night death slot..
ReplyDeleteIt's probably not gonna get cancelled...this season. But 6th may be its final, and that would just suck cause Castle deserves a longer run than...Gossip Girl.
ReplyDeleteThing about Booth and Brennan, the writers didn't do a very good job with creating their new dynamic. That's just my opinion, but I think they killed the fun. What I loved about Booth and Brennan were the funny moments.Marlowe seems to be doing fine, though. Cloudy With A Chance of Murder felt very S2-ish,but with a kissing scene, which is exactly what I wanted it to be.
