-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS scored a hefty Thursday overnight victory, with a 54 percent advantage over second-place ABC and a first-place finish in each of the six half-hours. The Big Bang Theory took top-rated honors for the evening with a season high 10.7 rating/17 share at 8 p.m., followed by Two and a Half Men (9.4/15 at 8:30 p.m.), Person of Interest (9.0/14 at 9 p.m.) and episode three of Elementary (7.4/13 at 10 p.m.). Comparably, Elementary held 83 percent of the 9:30 p.m. portion of Person of Interest (8.9/14) and dipped by only three percent in the overnights from its second episode on Oct. 4. But versus year-ago occupant The Mentalist (8.9/15 on 10/20/11), it dropped by 17 percent. Three-episode overnight track for Elementary: 9.0/16 – 7.6/13 – 7.4/13. The early verdict: still promising.

As for Two and a Half Men, growth versus year-ago occupant Rules of Engagement (7.1/11 on 10/20/11) was a considerable 32 percent.

On ABC, episode four of 8 p.m. drama Last Resort leveled off with a second-place 4.8/ 8 at 8 p.m. Comparably, this was up by 20 percent from short-lived year-ago occupant Charlie’s Angels (4.0/ 7 on 10/20/11). For-week overnight track for Last Resort: 6.5/11 – 5.5/ 9 – 4.7/ 8 – 4.8/ 8.

Next on the alphabet net was Grey’s Anatomy at a second-place 7.4/11 at 9 p.m., which should be more than enough to win the hour among adults 18-49, followed by sophomore Scandal at a 5.0/ 8 (#2) at 10 p.m. Comparably, Scandal is right on par with modest year-ago occupant Private Practice, with retention of 68 percent out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of Grey’s Anatomy (7.3/11).

In other freshman series news, episode two of drama Beauty and the Beast on The CW finished a distant fifth at 9 p.m. with a 1.5/ 2 in the overnights. Comparably, that dropped by a significant 37 percent from its week-ago opener (2.4/ 4 on Oct. 11) and it was down by 12 percent from failed year-ago time period occupant The Secret Circle (1.6/ 3 on 10/20/11). Retention for Beauty and the Beast out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in The Vampire Diaries (2.1/ 3 at 8 p.m.) was 67 percent. The early verdict: Don’t get too used to Beauty and the Beast.

Overall, The Vampire Diaries averaged a 2.2/ 4 from 8-9 p.m., which was eight percent below the 2.4/ 4 on the year-ago evening.

Elsewhere, game four of the National League Championship Series on Fox (Cardinals 8, Giants 3) finished third overall for the night with an average 4.2/ 7 in the overnights in primetime. And NBC could not compete, as usual, with lackluster combination of sitcoms 30 Rock (#3: 2.6/ 4), Up All Night (#4: 2.4/ 4), The Office (#4: 3.0/ 5) and Parks and Recreation (#4: 2.5/ 4) from 8-10 p.m., and sophomore newsmagazine Rock Center With Brian Williams (#4: 2.7/ 5).

  1. Stuns me that shows like BBT and 2.5M with their low-brow humor and over-used predictable jokes grab these viewers, while well-done comedy like P&A and yes, even The Office (great season so far) suffer. Really glad Grey's is doing so well into its 9th year as well, this season has rocked

  2. I will have to disagree concerning BBT. It's not because Chuck Lorre is behind it that it's necessarily bad, even if the guy makes some pretty shitty sitcoms like TAAHM or M&M. P&R is a pretty smart show, and it's a very good comedy which deserves more, I totally agree with that.

  3. Disagree about TBBT. I am glad it continues to do well. Humour is a personal thing, and there is room enough on TV schedules to cater for different tastes.

  4. I disagree about TBBT. TAAHM and M&M are what is usually called the "trashy" kind of humour (but even those i think should exist on tv, as that is the kind of humour some people relate with). TBBT is extremely well done though, and I find it extremely funny. The acting is top notch without a single weak-link on the cast, the jokes are funny and the storylines fresh and interesting. Even the relationship aspects are well developed and make you interested. Seriously, overlook the whole "chuck lore" prejudice because tbbt rocks.

  5. I'm not sure "low-brow humor" and physics jokes fit together.

  6. Totally agree with that ! But, hey, that's their lost, not ours. ;)

  7. I'm not a big comedy watcher, but I'd rather watch BBT than The Office. I've seen the Office, and I find it...well I won't say in order to be polite (that and Family Guy are the worst shows I've ever seen imo). Never saw P&A before.

  8. I love Mike and Molly, tbh. It's one of my favorites and I look forward to it on Monday.

  9. Ugh at people still not watching Parks and Rec. I hate that.

    ReplyDelete
  10. And I totally respect that, if this kind of shows are watched, it means they are liked.. so in a way, they're good for the people who watch it.

  11. Totally didn't mean to disrespect or put down anyone's shows. I'm a HUGE tv lover and just get frustrated when gems get buried, as I'm sure you all do. Have never been able to get into BBT,and can say without a doubt that Parks & Rec is one of the funniest shows to come out this last decade, such a shame that no ones watching.

But yes, comedy is subjective, and while I don't love BBT, i do recognize they have an awesomely stellar cast.

  12. You are forgiven as far as I am concerned. I have the same type of attitude when it comes to dramas, it kills me sometimes to see NCIS killing in dramas whereas the Last Resorts or Fringes of this world have to struggle. So I get you.

  13. I'm predicting a 2nd place finish for TVD at 8pm with it holding its 1.6 rating from last week.

  14. Good to see that Person of Interest is doing so well! Hope we see a 3rd season.

The show just keeps getting better and better with each episode, not to mention funnier too!

    ReplyDelete
  15. More people should watch Parks and Rec. It's hilarious! Seeing that NBC is 30+ percent higher than last years' evening- gives me hope for a 6th season!

  16. It's a real shame that tv rating reflect the intelligence of tv viewers. Unfortunately, the vast majority love migosynistic, repeativie sitcoms full of outdated and borderline stereotypes, while innovative shows like 30 Rock and Parks miss out. A quick look sites like tumblr and Reddit, however, show that while they don't have the ratings (not incd tivo/online views), they have the most dedicated fanbases.

  17. I love TBBT and I think its a great show!
But yes, I have never liked 2.5M ... besides the really idiotic ''jokes'' I've always found the show to be really sexist and portrays women in a very bad way!

    As a TSC fan: MWAHAHAHAHA!

    ReplyDelete
  19. It was soooo much expected.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I am glad beauty sank TSC and Ringer were so much better
hope CW picks up the Selection for late Spring after VD

  21. Looks like Wednesday Night is THE night for the CW

    ReplyDelete
  22. TAAHM was up

ABC was pre-empted so may be adjusted

CW down 0.4 for both shows (though TVD has a habit of being adjusted up) if TVD doesn't adjust up Arrow will win the week for the network.

  23. Oh my! I'm sorry to see that the Cw didn't do so well tonight, especially for Beauty and the Beast.
People should give these new shows at least four or five viewings before deciding if they are going to continue following or not. Sometimes it takes a bit more time for them to get into their stride.
However my annoying fannish heart is, in consequence, even happier for the "veteran" SPN's performance last night.:)

  24. not much they can do to remedy Thursday night now till mid season, they could move Beauty and replace it with Cult at that stage but I think they may be stuck for now?

    Surprised at TVD as well.

    ReplyDelete
  26. CW didnt make a mistake cancelling TSC they just made a mistake in replacing it with another dud. Same goes for Ringer and Emily.

Oh yeah, I bet they`re already regretting canceling TSC, it ended its season on a high note and it could grow in the ratings again. BaTB fell from 1.3 to 0.7 in ONE week, TSC was holding one way much better, it was still over 1.0 in its second week. TSC fans miss the show, but now the CW will miss it as well.

  28. I watch TBBT since Season 1, but(at least from Season 3 until now) shows like Community, Parks, etc. are far better comedies... Season 1 of TBBT was incredible refreshing, now i see it as T&HM 2.0: Sex jokes all the time(Lost are the Season 1 type of jokes).
It's a great show, but there are shows out there struggling that are way better.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Cult is getting slaughtered by reviews so not sure it could be better...

    ReplyDelete
  30. and lm not!! TVD usually starts well and then people realize it's same old crap and they dont wanna bother anymore

    ReplyDelete
  31. elementary Is holding well. And the 2.4 In demo Isn't bad.It beat the demo for Scandal.
Over at CW we can safely say arrow Is now the CW's top show, and Beauty and the beast Is this year's Secret circle. It fell heavily.a lot of people who watched the premiere are bailing on it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think Parks will survive another season unless NBC want to get rid of the Thursday comedy block completely 30 Rock and The Office are ending, Up All Night seems very likely to get cancelled. So really they need Parks and possibly even Community.

    ReplyDelete
  33. neither do I, I guess CW re just going to have to live with what they have

    ReplyDelete
  34. So glad to see all my shows doing well!
    Grey's did so well
Scandal is hanging in there but i think it's really good
and i don't think i have to worry about Elementary!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think it will more than likely get a third season. With none of the new dramas taking off and the rest of the network's hits either hanging on by a thread for a syndication deal or aging, POI is their biggest asset for the future as far as dramas go.

CBS has the super bowl, right? I would think it'd be an extremely wise move to give POI the post-super bowl slot. It's a show that has proven itself stable but also seems to be on the cusp of ratings gold with just a little push. It's in the 2nd season which a lot of post-slot shows tend to be, and with few other viable options (One of the comedies or a new show are the only other things I could see them doing since the new dramas are kinda meh on numbers), I think it's a likely scenario. That could help it's ratings a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Right. But this brings us back to the place where it's better to keep a regular/low ratings known show than a low/low ratings new show.

    ReplyDelete
  37. It's wrong to put BATB at the same level because TSC held good/average ratings for at least half season, but BATB is already failing at episode 2. If this continues, CW might not even order a complete season for BATB.

    ReplyDelete
  38. TVD got adjusted up to 1.3! On par with Arrow. I'm glad that the CW isn't just a one hit show network now. I hope that Nikita does well on Friday nights for them now (by Friday night standards)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Whats really bad for beauty and the best Is how higher it was on remiere and has dropped badly. In demo has gone from 1.3 to 0.7Considering they hve cult on track BAB may not go beyond 13 episodes.
Arrow Is beating VD even In Demo.Arrow keep 1.3 while VD got 1.2.Arrow Is first show to beat Vd among CW shows.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Some people think The Carrie Diaries can be their hit along with Arrow. It gets better reviews than Cult!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yeah. BATB was as high as last year premiere's ratings but it dropped faster (a lot!). But it think BATB premiere ratings were high because there was no Grey's Anatomy and Person of Interest at the time.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Totally Agree, Love to see 3rd season.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm really trying to tell myself that P&R is doing well because of the positive reception and critics love it, but this guy who did this report is really making it difficult for me...
