-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS got over the Wednesday “hump” in winning overnight fashion, with a 23 percent advantage over second-place ABC. Since only one network, The CW, was on the year-to-year plus side (+69 percent), let’s start with week two of drama Arrow, which dropped by only seven percent from its week ago-ago debut (3.0/ 5 on Oct. 10) with a 2.8 rating/5 share (#5) at 8 p.m. Keep in mind that most new series decline 10 to 20 percent in week two. Comparably, Arrow outdelivered a repeat of Ringer on the year-ago evening (0.9/ 1) by a whopping 211 percent, and the young male demos are expected to look particularly promising. It is very safe to predict a full season pick-up will be issued at any moment. Congratulations, The CW…Arrow is a hit.
At 9 p.m., veteran Supernatural is also on the plus side versus its prior Friday night performance thanks to the support from Arrow. But a 1.5/ 2 in the overnights from 9-10 p.m. (#5) was 47 percent below Arrow and the network can put this time period to better use. Compared to year-ago time period occupant America’s Next Top Model (1.8/ 3 on 10/19/11), Supernatural dipped by 17 percent.
In other week two news, Nashville on ABC (#2: 5.0/ 9) versus Chicago Fire on NBC (#3: 4.2/ 7) at 10 p.m. held a 19 percent overnight advantage. But CSI on CBS led the hour with a 7.3/12, which was four percent above the year-ago evening (when it faced Revenge on ABC and Law & Order: SVU on NBC). Comparably (and minus the lead-in support from Modern Family last week), Nashville dipped by a hefty 27 percent from one week earlier. And it was down by 15 percent from aforementioned Revenge one year earlier (5.9/10 on 10/19/11). But one piece of positive news was retention out of the season-premiere of lead-in Suburgatory (#2: 5.6/ 9 at 9:30 p.m.) of a solid 89 percent.
Chicago Fire, meanwhile, dropped by a less extensive 11 percent from its week-ago opener (4.7/ 8 on Oct. 10). And retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of lead-in Law & Order: SVU (5.0/ 8) was respectable at 84 percent. But compared to year-go occupant Law & Order: SVU (5.9/ 9 on 10/19/11) this was down by 29 percent. Of the two, Nashville is the more promising entry.
Earlier in the evening on ABC was underrated The Middle at a second-place 6.3/10 at 8 p.m., followed by week four of The Neighbors (#2: 5.0/ 8), Modern Family (#1: 9.0/14) and the aforementioned second season-premiere of Suburgatory (#2: 5.6/ 9) from 8:30-10 p.m. Comparably, The Neighbors built by nine percent week-to-week (versus a 4.6/ 7 on Oct. 10) with retention out of Modern Family of 79 percent. And The Middle and The Neighbors, on average, beat competing NBC comedies Animal Practice (#4: 2.9/ 5) and Guys With Kids (#4: 3.2/ 5) by 85 percent.
At 9:30 p.m., Suburgatory built from year-ago occupant Happy Endings (4.9/ 8 on 10/19/11) by 14 percent, with improved retention out of Modern Family of 62 percent.
On NBC, failing Animal Practice at 8 p.m. (sorry Crystal!) trailed year-ago occupant Up All Night (#4: 4.1/ 7 on 10/19/11) by 29 percent, while Guys With Kids at 8:30 p.m. was three percent above former occupant Whitney (3.1/ 5 on 10/19/11). At 9 p.m., Law & Order: SVU perked up to a 4.8/ 8 (#4), but that was down by 20 percent from year-ago occupant Harry’s Law (6.0/ 9 on 10/19/11).
Moving to CBS, Survivor: Philippines dominated the 8 p.m. hour with a 7.2/11 in the overnights, which was three percent above Survivor: South Pacific on the year-ago evening (6.9/11 on 10/19/11). Next was Criminal Minds at a healthy 7.8/12 at 9 p.m., which won the hour overall in the metered markets, followed by aforementioned CSI at a first-place 7.3/12 at 10 p.m.
Finally, Fox filled the evening with a two-hour recap edition of The X Factor, which averaged a 4.5/ 7 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m.

Boy, this guy really doesn't like Supernatural. Nearly every week he makes a disparaging remark about it.
ReplyDeleteStop bashing SPN! Guh, this guy annoys the crap out of me with the unnecessary comments. Stop being biased about your reports! But anyway, yay for SPN doing so well, along with some of my other shows.
ReplyDeleteCrap about Nashville, And glad it's doing okay still?
Yay, good for Arrow. Pleased to see it's doing OK in week 2.
ReplyDeleteGreat news on Arrow.
ReplyDeleteWow, could it be possible for this guy to stop with the SPN bashing, seriously ?
ReplyDeletecan not wait for the demo ratings this week, this guy is such a prat
ReplyDeleteCW is really celebrating the success of Arrow + SPN, the only one bashing here is the guy who wrote this report....
ReplyDeleteYup. That's why we're complaining about him, not CW.
ReplyDeletethe funny thing is that the facts he reports, the overnights, are competely irrelevant to a show's sucess or lack of it. But well...
ReplyDeleteyeah, i know, that's what i'm saying haha. i'm bashing the guy as well.
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody else just wait for the table ratings to come on? I swear this guys ratings are always incorrect.
ReplyDeleteAh, got it. Misunderstood there, so sorry!
ReplyDeleteThe fact that The Neighbors continues to do well baffles me. Who on earth is watching that show?!
ReplyDeletedon't worry. let's celebrate 8x02 did it great last week and this episode looks like will do the same :)
ReplyDeleteI do
ReplyDeleteI do. And I was one of the biggest haters before the show started because it looked stupid. But it's surprisingly funny and makes me laugh.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's going to last very long, though, so I'm going to enjoy the show while it lasts.
if GUYS WITH KIDS dies, can COMMUNITY have the 8:30 slot? please? a lot of people seem to want it to go back to 8 on Thursday, but they seem to be forgetting about Big Bang, which consistently gets 12 mil & averaged over 15 mil for season 5. if COMMUNITY goes up against THE NEIGHBORS, or even THE MIDDLE, it might have more of a chance
ReplyDeleteHe doesn't even have the ratings so it's not possible for his analysis to be correct, it's annoying. Yet I come coming back here because the ratings come out way too late for european time.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Klutzy_Girl. I don't consistently watch it. But is wasn't nearly as bad and I though it would be, it is *surprisingly* funny.
ReplyDeleteHe certainly is an arrow fan, I don't care for the personal likes and dislikes of the reviewer. It should be neutral . Just the facts please.
ReplyDeleteThey are not incorrect. He just give us the total rating not tht demo.
ReplyDeleteI have followed Marc Berman for years. He really has problems with certain shows. For all five years of Angel's run he predicted EVERY SINGLE YEAR that Angel would be canceled, canceled, canceled. He was wrong four out of five times. He is what TV By the Numbers calls a retentionista. That is he judges whether a show does well by how much of its lead in it retains. He never talks about demographics which are what the advertisers look at and he never looks at how the rest of the network is performing. Then he gets nasty about his show that he thinks should be gone, which is usually a genre show, because I don't think he really GETS genre TV. He can't say bad things about TVD, or Revolution because the ratings are just too good, but if a genre show starts doing bad he is like a vulture circling.
ReplyDeleteIn other words, take his analysis with a truckload of salt. I'll wait for TV By The Numbers. Even this analysis looks pretty good for Supernatural if you ignore his comments.
"...and the network can put this time period to better use."
ReplyDeleteI admit,my knowledge of how ratings work is very limited, but how exactly can the network put this time period to better use?So far the CW has 9 shows and only 4 of them aren't tanking. And for me,it's way too soon to call Beauty and the Beast a success.
On top of that, these 4 shows are perfectly combined.Personally I adore Arrow and Supernatural together. They're shows with a different, darker tone than the rest and they attract the same audience.Same goes for VD and Beauty and the Beast, which also benefits from the lead in.
So unless the CW wants to replace Supernatural with a show that will premiere mid season, which, with how things are going, they'd be stupid to do,then I don't see how there's a better use for this time period.
Looks like the neighbours is Abcs highest rated new series take that haters

Supernatural Half Hour Preliminaries

1.0/2.18 million
Wednesday night for the CW is a hit
Soooo happy for arrow! Terrible for nashville and chicago fire, like reallly terrible! ABC should put Nashville behind Grey's Anatomy or Revenge like... immediately if it wants to have a save-face renewal this year!
ReplyDeleteSo happy for the CW and epecially for Supernatural.
ReplyDeletethey should put it behind Revenge and off course cancel 666 which isnt going to last much longer any way.
ReplyDeletethat doesnt say much about ABC this season does it?!
ReplyDeletegreys is stronger than revenge to serve as a lead-in, not to mention that thursdays at 10 is a less competitive time slot than sundays at 10. However, since unfortuantely 666 will indeed be canceled, it makes more sense to move it to after revenge. While they are on it, they might as well try last resort on wednesday at 10 before canceling it.
ReplyDeleteHopefully Pedowitz uses his head next Season and moves Supernatural out of that slot and use Arrow as a launch pad for new shows.
ReplyDeleteNo use wasting a cushy slot behind a show on its last legs.
To all appearances , Mr Pedowitz used his head THIS season putting SPN and Arrow together. You don't change the players in a winning team!
ReplyDeleteha ha ha ha ha ha. Pedowitz will do no such thing.
ReplyDeleteYes he did use his head this Season. I never said pairing Supernatural with Arrow was wrong this Season. Supernatural was The CW's #2 show last Season and it never belonged on Fridays, however, now that The CW has another hit on their hands(TVD and SPN were the only two), I think it would be wise to take advantage of that to try and launch more hits. I love this network and I want to see it last beyond 2016. No need to get your panties in a twist.
ReplyDeleteHaHaHa
ReplyDeleteWith Deadman and Amazon is developed for next Season, don't hold your breath on the same Wednesday lineup. One of the above two I mentioned will join Arrow for an action-packed DC night.
Arrow among 18-48 demo remained the same and dropped very little In overall ratings.
ReplyDeleteDropping from 4.02 to 3.48 Is actully not bad.
Okay and if he did launch another show behind Arrow, what would you suggest he do with SPN, which is still a successful show for the CW, other than cancelling it, I mean? Just curious.
ReplyDeleteAnd by the way my panties are very comfortable, Thank you! :)
I see you added a edit to your post.
ReplyDeleteGeneralize if you wish, but I don't believe my answer to your post was either annoying or embarassing, it was merely an answer, but if you wanrt to read it as such, feel free to do so.
Well to begin with, 1. Start acting like they are comfortable.
ReplyDelete2. Mondays and Tuesdays are a mess with Gossip Girl ending, 9O21O/Dixie falling and Carrie has flop written all over it. I see Supernatural doing just fine on Mondays or Tuesdays. The point is that they need to have every night doing well(especially Mon-Thur). So they need to work with the hits that they have to launch more hits(TVD, Arrow, SPN); do you see where I'm going with this. Fridays has spies with Nikita, Thursdays has vampires, Wednesdays could be DC night and SPN could anchor Tuesdays as monster night.
But you know what I find hilarious though; it's how lead-in dependent Supernatural is. It's been paired with The CW's highest rated shows since its premiere(Gilmore Girls, SMALLVILLE, TVD and now Arrow) and that's the only reason it's survived this long. The second you take away it's strong support, it collapses. It's not even the self--starter it's claimed to be. It's just a 9pm show riding the huge waves its 8pm lead-in is providing.
And keep in mind the majority of New York and New Jersey lost CW thanks to Cablevision so fans have to wait and watch online.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see Suburgatory doing good, the season 2 premiere was amazing!
ReplyDeleteWoo! Hoo! I'm so glad to see this.
ReplyDeleteBut there's no guarantee those two will get picked up.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that matters too much..
ReplyDeleteAw, so happy for SPN. Thank you, Arrow! I don't watch you, but I love you very much right now.
ReplyDeleteHopefully, Nashville's ratings improve next week and start to get better.
You are really blowing smoke about Supernatural being lead in dependent. Yes it did well after the shows you mentioned. It also held steady after Nikita, one of the more poorly rated CW shows. Actually if you look back at ratings you would see that Supernatural was one of the most non-lead in dependent shows. Supernatural kept the same relative ratings whether Smallville went up or down. It kept the same general ratings minus the expect year to year drop off going after Nikita. The only time the ratings took big hits was when it moved from Tuesday to Thursdays and had more competition in the time slot and when it moved to Fridays, which is a low viewing, high DVR night. Yes, having a strong and more importantly COMPATIBLE lead in helped our ratings go up, but you can't discount the move from low rated Fridays to better rated Wednesdays. Also you can't ignore the fact that the move to Wednesdays also meant we were no longer competing with shows that draw the same type of audience, i.e. Fringe and especially Grimm.
ReplyDelete1) I don't believe lead-in really matters that much. Everyone I know knows how to use their remotes, especially anyone in the 18-49 demo. All it really says is whether or not the business side understands their market. I might stick with one channel for all of prime time because it sets the right mood and I like both shows. But I'm not staying to watch something I wouldn't otherwise watch because I like the show before that.
ReplyDelete2) I don't think anyone would say that Nikita's ratings helped SPN very much. And all the power of TVD couldn't help TSC or Nikita. And Smallville wasn't exacting a dominate force there at the end.
And Supernatural was the same in the all important 18-49 (1.0), and only down a tenth in 18-34 (0.9/3). Which is impressive.
ReplyDeleteIf anything Amazon will go to Thursday at 9. Beauty and the Beast will not be in that spot next season if it is renewed.
ReplyDeleteI also see them possibly moving Arrow or Supernatural. So Supernatural could be paired with Deadman (Kripke Night)
Although if Arrow/Supernatural is a success for CW this season I tend to think they go with what works.
Hopefully Beauty holds up well tonight so CW will have 2 good nights, a step in the right direction.
ReplyDeleteIt'd be really cool if that happened, but I'm not getting my hopes up.I'm not sure if Beauty will be able to hold up much longer.
ReplyDeleteI think it'll be this year's Secret Circle. It'll have decent or even good ratings for a while, but I don't think it'll maintain them in the long run.
I really hope I'm wrong cause,as you said, two good nights for the CW is definitely a (much needed)step in the right direction
Exactly. Supernatural had a lot of competition on Friday.
ReplyDeleteTVByTheNumbers do NOT post early Household ratings. If you know of another site that does we'll be glad to check them out.
ReplyDeleteIsn't that one of the largest TV markets, like anywhere?
ReplyDeleteYeah, no kidding. Bashing SPN, here, of all places, is a Bad idea. There is a very, very strong online SPN following and we /love/ our show, through thick and thin. SPN's ratings are holding strong, especially considering this is CW, and its an 8 year old show. CW has very few shows of any quality to offer. Right now, it's doing very well with arrow, SPN, VD, and Beauty and the beast. Last year, it had far less of interest.
ReplyDeleteBesides, SPN fans really do tend to dvr or more importantly watch online. I wish we could get rid of the retarded neilson rating system. Its been outdated since the rise of the internet.>.<
This guy who writes his reports should just keep his opinions to himself.
ReplyDeleteYou do if the whole network is sinking and you need to save it fast.
ReplyDeleteUp until the last two sentences I agreed with you. Obviously you are biased against Supernatural if you think isleofskye's response was anything other than someone disagreeing with your prediction. No panty-twisting there except yours.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I agree that if things keep going the same way, Supernatural will likely not be placed with Arrow next season. I've said that all along. The CW needs to make big gains on all days and the best way to do that is to split your biggest shows to give support to new shows. It wouldn't surprise me in the least for SPN to go to Monday or Tuesday nights because they need to have Arrow and VD launch their new shows. If Beauty and the Beast remains a hit I would guess it will move to one of those days too.
I too am worried about the CW's viability and 2016 is far too close for comfort. I'm ecstatic that they have the potential for two new hits and wish both the best of luck, even if B&tB is not for me. As a Supernatural fan, I understand just how important the CW improving is to my show staying on the air.
Now that's just plain wrong. Nikita had the worst ratings on the CW and it was Supernatural's lead-in. Supernatural still ended up being one of the top rated shows on the CW anyway. More to point, Supernatural's ratings weren't swayed by Nikita's. It stayed basically the same all year no matter what Nikita was doing or whether there were new episodes of Grimm and Fringe or not. You may not like SPN fans but ratings showed them to be very consistent last season.
ReplyDeleteIf he doesn't, he will have to do a lot of explaining to the shareholders. The CW must use their strongest shows to launch new shows. Unpairing Arrow and Supernatural wouldn't be a slap to SPN. It's just the current state of the network.
ReplyDeleteHmm. I never thought of it like that.
ReplyDeleteI suppose it makes sense, although I feel that it's the coupling of Arrow and SPN that gives the good results.
However, I know nothing about ratings, so who am I to say!:)
Berman believes way too much in the retention stats. For him, it seems to be as important as the demos themselves. When taken from that perspective, it would seem like wasted potential. What Berman normally does not take into consideration is the network performance as a whole and let's face it, the CW is a netlet instead of a network anyway so it's even more important to compare apples to apples. Perhaps Berman is advocating putting Emily Owens in the post-Arrow slot to try to drum up publicity for that show, which makes no sense to me at all. It would make sense if he was advocating putting Cult in post-Arrow because that show is going to need a lot of help to save it. It also shares the darker mood. However the CW is not in the habit of switching shows around within the season and I don't see Supernatural going to Mondays in season 8.
ReplyDeleteyes but early house ratings arent important, they don't give us the all important demo and they give people a false sense of what the actual ratings are going to be.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be very interesting to see what the ratings would be if Arrow was a repeat and Supernatural aired a new episode. That might give us a clearer picture of what is happening, although I think it's very clear that Arrow is a great lead-in for SPN.
ReplyDeleteWell when they aired the première of SPN on its own it got 0.8 which is probably it's true rating, so Arrow is definitely giving it a boost.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I would be wary about splitting them up; for maybe having one successful night a week, two counting the Thursday night, is better than being in the last spot every night of the week.
