Metered Market Thursday Ratings
Solid Results for the Vice Presidential Debate; Respectable Sampling for Beauty and the Beast

Household
Rating/Share
CBS 6.4/10
ABC 5.3/ 8
Fox 4.7/ 7
NBC 4.3/ 6
CW 2.3/ 4

----------

-Note: The year-to-year percent comparisons are excluded due to the Vice Presidential Debate last night.

----------

-Winners:
The Big Bang Theory (CBS), Two and a Half Men (CBS)

-Respectable Sampling:
Beauty and the Beast (CW)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
30 Rock (NBC), Up All Night (NBC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS led this atypical Thursday in the overnights, which is approximate due to the live Vice Presidential Debate between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan from 9-10:30 p.m. ET.

The Eye net stood well above the competition from 8-9 p.m. care of The Big Bang Theory (#1 for the evening: 9.8 rating/16 share) and relocated Two and a Half Men (#1: 7.6/12), which was equal to an encore telecast of Big Bang in this time period on the year-ago evening (but down from its former Monday 9 p.m. time period).

Second in the 8 p.m. hour was The X Factor on Fox (6.0/10), which dropped by 19 percent year-to-year, followed by week three of drama Last Resort on ABC, which slipped to a 4.7/ 8 (and needs to stop bleeding now if there is any future). Despite the erosion, Last Resort was still 17 percent above failed year-go occupant Charlie’s Angels (4.0/ 7 on 10/13/11). Three-week overnight track for Last Resort: 6.5/11 – 5.5/ 9 – 4.7/ 8).

Next was NBC’s lackluster combination of sitcoms 30 Rock (#4: 2.7/ 4) and Up All Night (#4: 2.4/ 4), followed by the fourth season-premiere of The Vampire Diaries on The CW at a 2.4/ 4. Comparatively, The Vampire Diaries was right on par with its year-ago season-opener (on 9/15/11).

In series-premiere news (and opposite the Vice Presidential Debate on the four competing networks) was the remake of Beauty and the Beast on The CW at a 2.4/ 4 (#5). While that was, comparably, equal to the debut of former time period occupant The Secret Circle, erosion of 19 percent in the second half-hour (2.6/ 4 to 2.1/ 3) could be a concern. Keep in mind that Arrow opened with a 3.0/ 5 in the overnights on Wednesday.

The approximate results for coverage of the Vice Presidential Debate was close between the Big 3 networks. ABC averaged a 5.8/ 9 in the overnights from 9-10:30 p.m., followed by NBC at a 5.4/ 8 and CBS at a 5.2/ 8. Fox, meanwhile, scored a 3.5/ 5 and the four networks totaled a hefty 19.9/30 (which does not, of course, include coverage on the cable networks).

The half-hour analysis at 10:30 p.m. scored a 4.9/ 7 on NBC, followed by a 4.8/ 7 for ABC and a 4.3/ 7 for CBS.

  2. I loved Beauty and The Beast!!!I hope it gets another year!!!

  3. Not related to the topic but have the topic titles on the main page been enlarged? The fonts look really big now.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yep, we've enlarged them to make them more readable on more screen sizes

  5. Wondered what had happened, it's going to take a bit of getting used to.

  6. I really cannot understand how more people watch TAAHM than 30 Rock. Just can't.

  7. Ah, good to know, I was trying to "fix it" on my computer :) No wonder I was having trouble with it...

  8. I got to be honest, I thought there was something wrong with the website and now that you say that it is on purpose, I must say it's a little bit annoying.

On my computer I press Command + the "+ =" key and the fonts get bigger. Can't people with problems do that ?

Other than that, the season premiere of 30 Rock was amazingly funny, too bad so many people watched it or last night's episode — and it's kind of ironic that they have a storyline about Jack purposely tanking NBC just when NBC wins the first 2 weeks of the season on A18-49 :D (not really because of their comedies though).

  9. Ahah nice question, I was also trying to "fix" it

  10. I don't understand why this great shows are like this. People don't like to watch good/intelligent shows.

    ReplyDelete
  11. you might want to let it get through this year first

    ReplyDelete
  12. not everyone found it good or intelligent

    ReplyDelete
  13. tvmonkey is right, not everyone has the same taste, and what we might think of good or intelligent others do not....sad but true! :)

  14. Im a little disappointed with the TVD ratings, I thought they would be better:( The episode was great though:)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Good to see TVD stable with last season!

    ReplyDelete
  16. So I guess my predicons of total flop for beauty and the beast was wrong.eather way I won't watch that crapfest even with Kristin Kreuk on It.The Vampire diaires Is holding on with last season.Proves how mcuh audences have lost Intrest In Gossip Girl and 90210.

  17. WOW The CW did well, but wasn't it pre-empted in Pittsburgh :(

    ReplyDelete
  18. I don't know what ratings TVD got last year, but that's good ratings for on the CW.

    ReplyDelete
  19. That's kind of a standar thing with TV: People mainly watch it to release some stress. By this mean, a show like The Big Bang Theory is more appealing than Community(A way better show... By far).
Of course, there are the TV Fans, like us, who watch it 'cause we love the media... But overall, we are a minority.
At least that's what i think so...

  20. Give it time, it could still flop.

    ReplyDelete
  21. CW beats NBC again, lol!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Very happy for the CW. :)
People are always dissing it so that makes me cheer it on. Good luck to all their shows.
I didn't see BATB but I'm glad it wasn't the flop that eveyone predicted and I'm happy for TVD, which I personally do not like, but which managed to equal the 18-49 rating of ABC and beat NBC!
    Yea for the underdogs!

  23. That's worry worthy number of viewers for Beauty and the Beast. I liked the pilot, but the cop stuff was boring, so I am trying not to get too attached. I don't think it'll last too long, but who knows when comparing it to other CW shows?

  24. The Vampire Diaires and Beauty and the beast got In 3 million of total viewers. That along Is very good. This week the CW got arrow with 4 million,The Vampire Diaires and BaB In 3 million and supernatiral In 2 million. But the real kicker Is CW got 4 shows In 1 In Demo.Usually It has been only 1(VD) so they had a good week. The Vampire diaires Is still highest In demo and to shock beauty and the beast got same In demo as Arrow. My prediction for failure for Beauty and the beast was totally wrong.

  25. Actully It did very well. It's total ratings were better.ast season It got 2 million range In total viewers. In total viewers this Is best since first episodes of season 1.Elena becoming vampire and being lead In to heavly promated beauty and the beast.Lats season It was only show to go In 1 range In the demo so It Is continuing to do very well.

  26. With beauty and the beast It's fairly obvious Kristin Kreuk got some of smallville audence to watch It.Thursday was Smallville's home for last year on the WB and seasons 6-8 on The CW.So I think having her helped the show.

  27. Thatd' be great to put them in "bold" :)

  28. So sad about Last Resort. In fact, I'm a little pissed about all three of ABC's new dramas. Last Resort and Nashville are two of the best new shows of the season, and although Nashville premiered well, people are not watching these shows. And 666 Park Avenue, although not a great show, has amazing potential and no one is watching this one either. I honestly believe that ABC has a major scheduling problem. Last Resort at 8pm on a Thursday?! Really. That show never had a chance. And two potential drama hits for ABC are put on at 10pm?! I know they both had strong lead ins, but still. Crap like Dancing with the Stars is taking up way too much of the schedule and that is ABC's problem.

  29. Woo go The Vampire Diaries! This is the second best premiere since the show started so I'm glad it's managed to retain it's audience over 3 seasons. It was a great premiere :D and a 1.6? I don't think I recall a CW show getting a demo that high .. ever .. (someone correct me if i'm mistaken)

  30. TSC started well last year and look how it ended up. Only time will tell if BAtB will last.

    ReplyDelete
  31. CW was pre-empted and may be subject to downward adjustment. But still good numbers.

  32. Some LIVE +3 Results for last week (week 2 of the season)

    Fringe 0.98 to 1.51
    Supernatural 0.83 to 1.22
    Grimm 1.64 to 2.62
    Revolution 3.17 to 4.81
    Glee 2.58 to 3.88
    Once Upon A Time 3.41 to 4.48
    Elementary 2.55 to 3.46

  33. Yeah, this was a good week for CW. I think they got their line up set up well for those 4 shows.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Especially since a lot of people were just checking out the show last night.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh wow, I was expecting TVD to actually be down...it seemed like the ratings were waning last season... And I definitely didn't expect anyone to watch B&tB... :|
Good job CW. Two days in a row above 1.0 rating. XD

    ReplyDelete
  36. I like it. The font choice and the coloring look more professional too. :D

    ReplyDelete
  37. Also...if I'm correct, about 15 years ago, NBC RULED Thursday nights... W&G, Seinfeld, etc... and now they are dwarfed by a teenage vampire drama and a beauty and the beast remake on CW. O_O I have no words.

    ReplyDelete
  38. CW used to get above 2.0's in it's early years, the TVD premiere on September 10, 2009 earned a 2.1 18-49 rating, while 90210's premiere drew a 2.6 18-49 rating on September 2, 2008. Hard to believe now, especially with 90210 scoring a 0.4 this week!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Still think BaTB is awful, still think it will be dropping as fast as a rocket.

    ReplyDelete
  40. It's good to know these changes were made on purpose. I also tried to fixed it, when I noticed the font size is bigger. I thought I clicked something accidentally. Anyway I liked the old look just fine, I guess I just have get use to the new one.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I guess the original 90210 must've helped them get that sort of demo! Some shows just aren't suppose to last as long as they do, there's only so many story lines you can do/ hook ups in 90210 and GG.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Unfortunately, the final score of TVD is 3,18M viewers, and Beauty and the beast is 2,48M viewers :'( but it's still good for The CW anyways ;-)
