----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS remains the network to beat on Tuesday with its combination of NCIS (#1 for the evening: 11.6 rating/18 share), NCIS: Los Angeles (#2: 9.5/14) and week three of older-skewing drama Vegas (#1: 7.5/13), which was equal to year-ago occupant Unforgettable in the metered markets. The positive news for Vegas was matching its week-ago overnights (three-week track: 9.4/16 – 7.7/13 – 7.6/13), which means it is settling in. But with a performance only similar to Unforgettable (which will be returning this summer), this may not be the breakout hit the network was hoping for.

ABC was boosted, of course, by Dancing With the Stars, which won the 9 p.m. hour with a 10.4/16 in the overnights. Comparably, was 13 percent below one year earlier (versus a 12.0/18 at 9 p.m.). Earlier in the evening was an encore telecast of Dancing With the Stars, which officially moves into the Tuesday 8 p.m. time period next week, at a third-place 6.6/10 at 8 p.m. At 10 p.m., soon-to-be potentially concluding Private Practice finished second with a 4.7/ 8, which was 31 percent below year-ago occupant Body of Proof (6.8/11 on 10/11/11). And the retention for Private Practice out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of Dancing With the Stars (10.5/16) was only 45 percent.

Over at NBC, The Voice at 8 p.m. finished second with a solid 8.1/13, which was 119 percent above the first-half of The Biggest Loser on the year-ago evening (3.7/ 6 on 10/11/11). And it should, of course, have no trouble winning the hour among adults 18-49. Next on NBC were full season renewed comedies Go On (#3: 4.6/ 7) and The New Normal (#3: 3.8/ 6), which compared to the second half of aforementioned The Biggest Loser (3.7/ 7 on 10/11/11) increased by an average of 14 percent. Retention of 53 percent for Go On out of the second-half of lead-in The Voice (8.6/13), however, could be better.

The true test of success (or lack of) for Go On and The New Normal will come effective on Oct. 23 when ABC sitcoms Happy Endings and Don’t Trust the B____ in Apartment 23 step into the Tuesday 9 p.m. hour.

At 10 p.m., always lackluster Parenthood finished third in the overnights with a 3.9/ 7, which was equal to one year earlier. But the race among adults 18-49 will be a closer call.

Elsewhere, moving Glee out of the Tuesday 8 p.m. hour has not been beneficial for Fox, which finished fourth in the overnights in each of the four half-hours. Relocated Raising Hope (the best established series you are not watching, unfortunately) opened with 2.8/ 4 at 8 p.m., followed by a 2.1/ 3 for week three of Ben and Kate at 8:30 p.m. Comparably, Ben and Kate slipped another nine percent from one week earlier. Three week overnight track for Ben and Kate: 2.9/ 4 – 2.3/ 4 – 2.1/ 3. Demo friendly New Girl perked up to a 3.6/ 5 at 9 p.m., but that is still way below prior season levels. And week three of The Mindy Project dropped to a 2.4/ 4 at 9:30 p.m. Three week overnight track for The Mindy Project: 3.3/ 5 – 2.6/ 4 – 2.4/ 4).

Hoping patience will be a virtue, Fox has ordered six additional episodes of Ben and Kate and nine of The Mindy Project.

Struggling The CW capped off the evening with relocated Hart of Dixie (#5: 1.2/ 2), which dipped by eight percent from year-ago occupant 90210 (1.3/ 2 on 10/11/11) and 9 p.m. special Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, which was pretty horrible at a 0.5/ 1 (#5).

  1. Crap about The Mindy Project. I definitely think Private Practice is going to be cancelled.

Yay for Go On! Seems like it's doing well.

  2. Okay, I'll put up with snide commentary to a point, but don't DO. NOT. knock Dr. Horrible. Come on!

  3. Can't say i am surprised about Dr Horrible - it's been around for so long that most people that wanted to see it will have already seen it. There were lots of non-repeat choises out there vying for audiences, so it is no surprise it failed to get a huge audience.

  4. The promo department had to use all the Addison scenes to make a promo for this episode, but PP viewers know that the rest of the cast only does promo when the episode is about them. Having Amy Brenneman on The Chew on the day the episode aired was a clear sign for PP regular viewers to stay away, and she can't bring in new ones.

The New Normal beat The Mindy Project in overall and the key demo? If so, that's a first, and an ominous sign for Fox, which just ordered a full season of TMP.

And when Don't Trust the B returns, things could get even dicier for Fox.

  6. Are Go On and The New Normal up from last week?

    ReplyDelete
  7. How is it possible that Heart of Dixie lost half its audience in one week?
I'm getting worried for SPN now. :(

    ReplyDelete
  8. I think SPN will be okay tomorrow, especially with the premiere of Arrow-it's been given high praise & lots of advertising so it should have a good effect on spn :)

    ReplyDelete
  9. I do hope so. but HOD losing 50% of its rating seems really strange; I wouldn't want that to happen to SPN.
I realise that Arrow should be a good pull in, but nothing is written in stone, so I'll still just keep my fingers crossed. :)

  10. The comments on tvbtn site are basically hoping that Arrow gets a 1.0 in the demo somehow!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I know absolutely nothing about ratings so I wouldn't know what to predict, but I would hope that it gets much more than that!

  12. HOD didn't lose 50% did they? .3 less in the demo's but still over 1 mill viewers. (I'm not from America so I don't fully *get* the rating system). I'm not worried about HOD considering how bad the ratings were yesterday for the CW. Hopefully it was just a dip this week and the viewers for HOD will pick up in the following weeks. Oh and there's DVR we should take into account too? Maybe it'll go up :)

  13. I mean Ben and Kate ratings are still bad but it only dropped a little bit from last week.

Raising Hope actually increased its overall viewship and kept the same demo.

The Mindy Project is pretty much stable from last week.

Fox though it is amazing to see how their ratings overall this year has really dropped considering how much New Girl was pulling in last year.

  14. I'm not from the US either so I don't quite grasp it all myself. :)
However I'll be curious to see how the ratings go tomorrow.

As for HoD, yes it might be adjusted up, and as you say it could be a one off thing.

  15. Go On is up 0.7, New Normal is up 0.3

  17. Another week Vegas held onto its audience.....
I'm still not ready to call this one a flop like some people.
It's hard for me to do so since it has the biggest audience of any new show......

It seems like it will be between Vegas and Elementary for the #1 new show of the year... although Nashville could certainly be up there in a few weeks.

Has the death watch begun for Ben and Kate?
I would think it might beat Animal Practice to cancellation if it was not already picked up for a full season..... Still do not understand how FOX gave full season orders to Ben and Kate and The Mindy Project. Do they not have any mid-season replacement shows on the table?

  18. Thanks. :)
I went and had a look.
I get it now. It seems that over 1.0 is considered good but still I would hope Arrow does at least slightly over that.
It's very strange to me that the CW has such low numbers and yet their shows are quite popular even around the world, although I realise that the popularity ouside of the States has no bearing on the US ratings.
Ever more curious for tomorrow's results. :)

  19. so nervous too (from UK but sorta understand ratings) i'm really hoping Arrow get's above a 1.0, and even if I don't like it, I still want it to do well because it could help out The CW a bit, but I also want TVD to premiere around 1.4-1.5 again this year? But the 0.4's for GG, 90210 and HOD are really worrying me!

    ReplyDelete
  20. surely Revolution is the front runner for new show of the year at the moment?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hi. I'm from the UK too, although I live in Europe now. :)

I must say I find the CW a kind of a mystery.
I get that it's a small network, but it is broadcast all over the US and it's free too; its programmes are really no worse that other networks' offerings and some of them are far better than a lot of the sit-coms and stuff the "bigger" networks put out, which score such high ratings; so it really makes me wonder why the CW does do so badly.

I have never watched GG or 90210 but I found HOD really quite cute and its fall seems exaggerated, even although I have learned that shows usually do fall a little bit from the première.
Keeping my fingers crossed for tonight and I hope that Arrow is a big hit for the CW and a good lead in for SPN. :)

  22. it's not fair... HOD is one of the best shows on CW! it doesn't DESERVE this rating! 0.4 is too poor...yesterday Gossip girl and 90210 scored 0.4 with less than 1 milion of viewers...it's not right!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree, HOD is a cute show and it deserves more. Maybe last night was just a one off.
I'm sure it will pick up next week. :)

  24. I see the "#1 new drama" as the most watched new series (total viewers) and as a reflection of the viewing audience - not about how it does for the network. It just is logical to me that the #1 new Drama or Comedy is actually the most watched show.... not the most watched by a specific demo..

I bar tend and wait tables and discuss TV shows with many of my regulars and customers. Not a single person has said they love it. Most have said they like it but have a lot of issues with it, can't quite get into it, or it "seems like it's written for teenagers"....and most are week to week as to whether or not they will stop watching. Of course the "people I know" argument is not conclusive or even empirical, but it has been a good meter as to how shows will do in the past. With so many people feeling that way I wonder how it will hold up as the season goes on......

Terra Nova had similar numbers (maybe a little lower 18-49 by the end) and similar customer appeal and was cancelled. In fairness that was in large part due to cost and Revolution does not have that concern as far as I know.... NBC needs a hit and I don't think it is in danger of cancellation ... However, I would not be shocked if Revolution drops even more in the next couple weeks.

If it holds at 8 million total viewers and over 3.o demo that would certainly be a hit for NBC. However if 2 or three other series have over 11 million viewers (3 million more viewers) and over 2.0 demo wise I would say one of them is the #1 new show. Person of Interest was the #1 new drama last year - not Once Upon a Time despite OUaT having more fanfare and usually having a slightly higher demo.

If you look at from the network perspective then maybe Revolution is the #1 new show.....
    *Shrug*

  25. As a scorned TSC fan: BWAHAHAHA! Watching the CW crashing and burning is a prime delight!

  26. I think he was referring to the horrible ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  27. We won't know until the full tables are posted in about 1/2 hr

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yep, that's correct. The premiere had 1.54 and Episode 2 had 1.20.So they lost around 20% of actual viewers.

The demo is just the %.

  29. As a Hart of Dixie: Wooo new episodes every week.
