POLL : What did you think of Supernatural - Season 8 So Far?

Oct 31, 2012

Thanks to jill for the poll idea.

"It seems that a lot of fans are not enjoying Season 8 as much as past seasons if going by the comments is an indicator. Maybe you could run a poll asking people what they think of S8 so far?"

38 comments:

  1. I am loving it a lot so far! I've loved all the episodes and I can't wait for tonight's.

  2. Well,we've only seen four episodes, but I'm very happy with it so far.
If I had liked Bitten a little more I'd have gone with "Awesome",but instead I went with "Great".
It'll change to "Awesome" in no time,I'm sure!

  3. i am so tired of the way they do flashbacks and the unecessary brother drama.

  4. I think it's great so far. There are a few issues though the writers will fix.

    Pros:

-Great idea for a season myth-arc (closing the gates of Hell)

-Great re-occuring characters, so far (I'm not counting Garth as that is in a future episode)

-Great storyline for Dean in Purgatory (probably my favorite part of the season so far)

-Great action-packed myth-arc episodes (We Need To Talk About Kevin, What's Up Tiger Mommy?)

    Cons:

    -Lacking Sam storyline

-The brothers arguing over Sam wanting normal life and Sam not searching for Dean in every episode so far

-Weak non-myth-arc related episodes (Heartache and Bitten) - They need to reference Season 1 and 2 stand-alones, those were the best stand-alones imo. Stand-alones have become increasingly weak/boring/weird over ever since.

  5. It's torn between it sucks and it has promise. Dean story has promise, Benny story has promise, Kevin and the tablet has promise, and Castiel may have some promise. Good monsters not so much. Sam thrown under the bus by a writer who doesn't think that Sam's background is too complex to deal with proves how great of a writer Carver is. Dean has a complicated history, so does Castiel, and half the other characters on the show, so why is Sam getting treated differently? Why throw Sam under the bus? Why not have some episodes centered around Sam? Or deal with Sam? What happened to Sam's story?

Total lack of brothers, too much conflict, and all the developing relationships revolve around Dean. And no hope in the future of the brothers getting on the same page let alone show something more about why Sam didn't look for Dean? Nope, we get Dean and Benny's relationship is as strong as Sam and Dean. Well, if it's as strong as how much it currently is then I fully expect for it to fall apart by May. But it's the replacement relationship, then Carver has ruined the show, which I have a feeling it will happen since he has no interest in Sam, Sam's character development of the past seasons, and the brothers.

  6. ..the first..three reaction or voting...COMPLETELY..AGREE...the episode really poor and awful the LAST ONE....for all SUPERNATURAL SEASON..please dont make that mistake...AGAIN..had the lowest percent by FAR AND FACT

  7. Other than last weeks episode it's been great so far.

  8. I gave it a 'great'. My only complaint is "Bitten". Unless it really plays into the story later in the season, it was a waste of an episode for my own personal taste. So I toss that ep and rate the season so far on the first 3 eps which I believe are very solid and are setting the season up very nicely.

  9. I'm actually really enjoying the season. I think that they're handling the flashbacks well, and are doing a good job of weaving them into the fabric of Dean's reality. That being said, without trying to start something, I understand why fans could be upset by a lot of the season. For all the time they've donated to telling Dean's story in Purgatory (which, let's face it, there's probably TONS of material there), they've not given equal time to Sam's year off. I'm not as up in arms about it as a lot of fans seem to be, but I'd still like to know more. I feel like he's still a huge mystery this season.

THAT being said, it's still early. We're only four episodes in, five after tonight. I think it's crazy to write off an entire season after four episodes. The only episode I HAVEN'T enjoyed so far was last week's, though I can appreciate an attempt to step outside the box. But when it comes down to it, I love these boys, and I'll keep watching them week after week, whether they're sniping at each other (PLEASE let's end that soon, though) or acting like the slightly more carefree Winchesters we met all those years ago.

  10. I agree with your pros and cons. The lack of Sam storyline is the biggest problem because it leads to the brothers arguing about what Sam wants and we are told what Sam wants but see Dean's feelings about it. I do agree the stand alones have been weak and with such a powerful mytharc too many too early.

  11. It's in between OK and Great for me... I'm enjoying it, but I feel detached from this season. I blame it on schoolwork weighing me down and also being 8 seasons into a really angsty show. lol

  12. This pretty well sums things up for me. If Sam's story were being given the time that Dean's is, and Sam's feelings were being shown and validated the way Dean's are, I would be pleased with this season. The idea of closing the gates to Hell is interesting. Dean's time in Purgatory has a wealth of story there. But consigning Sam to domestic bliss and no concern about Dean is ruining the show for me. I don't mind the boys having conflict, although Lord knows, I thought the I want a normal life conflict was resolved YEARS ago, but I do mind that only one brother gets his side shown.

This season has the potential to be great, but until they get a handle on Sam's story and POV, it is a miss for me.

I didn't vote because none of the answers fit. Disappointing or worrying would have fit.

  13. I think for a show 8 seasons old it's been okay. At least I feel it shows some promise, in terms of where the story can develop, and that is more than I can say for the last two seasons.

But whether or not they manage to deliver, you'll have to ask me again at the end of the season.

  14. Well, going by the poll, it's going AWESOME!!! :D

  15. Let's see, we'll start with the positives and then move to the negatives.

    Positives:
    -Mystery on Castiel
    -Benny is interesting
    -Kevin's mom

    Negatives:
    -Annoying flashbacks
-Turning Sam's character into a whiny baby
-Stupid brother drama that we've seen already
    -Dean being a dick again
    -Bad episodes
    -Boring

I don't know how it'll compare to Season 6/7, but the only good things about Season 7 were the first 2 episodes and Death's Door, and Season 6 was just sub par on every level. If this season doesn't turn out good, I'm choosing to believe Season 5 was where the story ended.

  16. Didn't care for last weeks episode with the video recorded episode and the focus on the three college kids instead of Sam and Dean!

    ReplyDelete
  17. With only four episodes in, it seems a little early to be answering this question, but since it was asked ....

From what we've seen so far, I voted poor. The word of God hunt has promise, but they haven't done much with it yet, other than have Sam and Dean look for Kevin.

The OOC Sam is really too much to just ignore and to have Sam and Dean fighting over something Sam would NEVER do without any reasonable explanation as to Sam's behavior is bad. Also, I went into this season with one thing more important than any other - and that's to see some balance restored to the coverage of Sam and Dean's storylines. For the past two years, 90% of the focus has been on Dean's POV and how everything is affecting Dean, with the other 10% focused on Sam. I need to see a good faith effort at balance displayed and there are no signs that that is coming - at least in the first half.

Benny could have been an interesting character had he not been turned into Amy Part II, with the brothers instantly lying to each other and fighting with each other over him. This kills my interest in this storyline. So right now I'm thinking comedy might be a good change for tonight's programming, and maybe I'll check back with the show when they've cleaned up the Benny mess (some wire or a vampire knife should do) and given a reasonable explanation as to why Sam did not look for Dean or Kevin.

Oh, and I sort of liked Bitten because it was fresh and different. It has been the highlight of the season so far.

  18. Season's been ok up until the last episode. Horrible.

The brothers are going to fight and disagree. It is what brothers do.

Dean gets a mysterious storyline which is revealed one, cloudy, murky flashback at a time.

Sam gets the storyline he was supposed to have from Season One Episode One until the Yellow-Eyed Demon came along and his brother re-appeared from Purgatory. (Which, in my opinion, Sam caught a HUGE break when Dean came back.)

Cas gets a storyline shrouded in mystery.

The Word of god started strong but is lost in Middle America, much to the chagrin of Metatron.

    Crowley being Crowley.

    More douchey angels

And Becky STILL wondering how she got THIS close.

  19. I think the flashbacks are amazing - both Sam and Dean's - and I've enjoyed every one of them. They are easily the best part of the show so far.

I don't think Sam is being thrown under the bus at all. There's only been three episodes about the Winchesters so far, and I think we're going to get his full story later on. My assumption was that his flashbacks wouldn't be all flowers and romance like some are complaining about, but about dealing with loss, and the latest TV Guide interview seems to confirm that. I also think that we'll see that he was psychologically unable to deal with hunting anymore. I'm pretty confident about my predictions too, since Dean came out of Purgatory /exactly/ how I thought he would from the start of the summer, right down to the comparison with "The Hurt Locker".

My bare minimum requirement for being satisfied with the show is that Castiel is alive and appears regularly. That alone is enough for me to rate the season well. But in addition to that, there are a number of other things about this season that I'd been hoping would happen with the show.

I'm really very pleased about the show taking on the theme of the personhood of monsters in a serious way this season. It's always bothered me how sporadically and inconsistently it's been dealt with in the past. I hated how the show validated Dean's monsters-are-monsters-and-we-kill-them stance last season, and I couldn't be happier that they're revisiting it with more complexity. I liked "Bitten" for the way it dealt with that theme, and I hope we see more of Kate in the future.

I'm glad that they're re-populating the cast. Benny is intriguing so far. I love Kevin. Linda Tran seems like she could be a good character in the hands of better writers (no love for Dabb and Loflin ever). I adore the angels, but after Cas' entire garrison was killed at the end of last season, I thought that would be the last we'd be seeing of them for a while. So I'm happy that that's not the case, and I'm looking forward to meeting Naiomi.

My problem with the relationship between the Winchesters last season was that it was boring. So I consider the fact that there's some tension between them - with a source other than "What's wrong with Sam?" - to be an improvement. The fact that they are actively on a quest this season instead of just reacting to things going on around them is also an improvement.

There are some things that I'd like for the show that I know I'll never get - for it to be less casually sexist/racist/etc, for Dabb and Loflin to disappear forever (I'm convinced that Carver ghost-wrote the Purgatory scenes in their episode) - but in terms of what I could realistically hope for from the show, so far the season has surpassed my expectations.

  20. I'm quite disappointed with the season so far. Season 8 is taking brotherly angst to an entirely new level. This new dynamic amongst the characters is keeping SPN from hitting its stride creatively as well. From both a character and a storytelling standpoint this show is struggling to find its footing.

The one bright spot in the season so far is this season's main storyline - closing the gates of Hell forever. This quest is a damn good idea that should provide a lot of fun ideas, situations, and episodes but so far it has taken a backseat to the endless Sturm und Drang of the Winchester's personal bullsh*t. Enough already.

  21. I've been reading the comments. I agree to an extent. We need to know Sam's reasons and we haven't been given anything. We may not like his reasons but they need to come out. We need the Sam story arc. Dean's is coming right along and that's a rarity. I like it so far, although I do hope he begins to show his compassion again. This really is like season one before he discovered children, that monsters are not all bad, etc. The first sign of any return was his letting the girl go in Bitten. I want to see real monsters again. They were good but not great stories. So far the best has been revolving around Kevin and Mrs. Tran and the stone arc. Benny looks to be good. Garth is always good, but lets have the boys talk this out. Sam sees a vicious, dangerous Dean. Sam is back to pre season one attitudes about life. There has to be a reason why. They need a serious talk. Dean has got to open and tell Sam I can't do it without you. I've been alone without family for a year. He's tried but not successfully. Carver is good. This has to be going somewhere. It's just dragging a little. There's hasn't been an episode that I think sucks, so he's ahead so far. lol

  22. I've really, sincerely been enjoying this season -- even "Bitten", which I enjoyed more because I felt it was a compelling story, than because it was an episode of Supernatural. I thought it was a well-done one-off. But most of my praise goes toward this season's narrative. I'm grateful to Carver for bringing together some loose ends, for focusing appropriate weight on the character relationships, for varying the scenes and stories interestingly, and for returning beloved minor characters to the show (ie Charlie!). I am also more than thrilled to have Castiel (my favorite character) in more than just a handfull of episodes, as he was last season.
I also think the season will improve as it goes on, and the troublesome questions (like about Sam and his new character path) are answered, and the dramatic arc of the show nears climax. I really look forward to more of a great year (and hope that Castiel will survive it)!

  23. I think it's going really good so far. Better than season 6&7 anyway! So I'm going with GREAT! Let's get to AWESOME!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree.... for some reason the brotherly angst isn't working so far very well....
I think, and this is a problem that has developed from the show being too trigger happy with it's supporting characters, and constantly leaving the boys to have to deal with their disappointment in each other rather than have something else with a different angle they can worry about.

    ReplyDelete
  25. *** Sam is back to pre season one attitudes about life. There has to be a reason why.***

The reason I heard is that Carver didn't want to bother with Sam's convoluted history (seems no show-runner has been able to write him consistently) and decided to ignore it all by "resetting" Sam back to Season 1. Way to go Carver. Ignore all the character's development and make him OOC. It's not believable - not for a minute do I believe Sam wouldn't look for Dean or help Kevin.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I've really been enjoying this season. We've had some good episodes and I can't wait to see what's going to happen next

    ReplyDelete
  27. I love it, especially Dean's storyline [can't believe I'm finally able to write that in 3 years.] Purgatory, Benny, the new sense of purpose, the PTSD is all very moving.
But it really needs more explanation for Sam's POV. He's coming off as not happy Dean's back and that's painful as hell. We just need to see more of what is in his heart. I'm very hopeful future episodes will address this, because I sense Carver knows exactly where he wants to go, and needs both brothers on the same page to get there.
I do wish the dissatisfaction would not express itself as character bashing, on both sides.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I voted OK. I have watched all the episodes but I feel like they are trying to set up way too many story lines but giving limited info on them. Purgatory flashes have been good but we don't know much, Benny is a mystery, as is Cas. Kevin and his mom which were like the main objective of the premiere are in the wind, Sam's past year with the girl and the dog are a vague flashback. And wtf was that last episode? Made no sense. Did Jared and Jensen need time off?

    ReplyDelete
  29. A bit early for a poll, but not surprising.

So far I like season 8 a lot. You can tell that something is very wrong with both brothers, they both hide something ugly from the past year spent without the other, and I can't wait how this will play out.

    Go Carver!!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. You've pretty much hit all of my buttons. I need them to pick up the brother's relationship stuff. I keep wanting to tell Dean to shut up all ready.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Only the first two episodes were good, but the last two were atrocious. At this point, they should just ditch the stand alone episodes, they are really awful, but they waste our time and the writers have run out of ideas. They should focus on a few storylines that run through a whole season and move between them in each episode.

    ReplyDelete
  32. i've liked it a LOT better than season 6 or 7.but not as good as season 4 or 5 though!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Awesome except for the found movie disaster, love Blood Brothers, my favorite ep so far.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I believe that season 8 is great so far with the exception of "Bitten", which was awful. Give Jeremy Carver the chance to bring the show back to greatness. Sara Gamble did an okay job but I am glad that she has moved on. Give it a few more episodes before you make a definite decision. There will always be people who hate or love it, we all have our own opinions. I do like Dean's storyline. Benny's is very interesting . Sam's , I really don't have much interest in. Kevin and Crowley, I'm not sure about. Waiting to see what happens with Castiel's. For me it is to early to say but, great so far.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I say poor but we are only in the 5 eps so. what I am getting sick of is the brothers fighting and lieing again and that pretty much made me sick of season 7 dean lieing to sam again are we going to have to deal with this again I just wish that dean would just let sam go insted of puting him on a dog lesh again let him go you have benny now you can play with him ok.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I have been loving every second of it! I am thrilled that the boys are back for another action packed season!

    ReplyDelete
  37. everything has changed deans turnd into a bitch and sam, well sams story so far remindes me of bold and the beautiful, thay have left out everything supernatural,as in the music ,where the bloody hell is the music i want ac/dc,blue oyster, ozzy and all the old songs that made me feel badass just by watching it,also at comic con thay said thay where going to be getting into more supernatural episodes with more depth on story and the monsters,so far its dean being a bad ass for escaping pergatory witch i quite like to tell the truth but going of at sam for not hunting then letting benny live ??wtf and sam WTF???there is no story here just flash backs about a dog and a girl and how thay both lost someone (im starting to welt up. sob) as someone said a few posts up that it ended with season 6 is true to the core, imo thay delt with satan to quick you cant top satan (not a devil worshiper just saying)as he is one bad mother but now thay got the king of hell wtf dont get me wrong i love crowaly he is one funny dude but thay have destroyed him in season 8 as he is no longer as funny as he used to be,also the gags or jokes that dean, sam, crowaly or any others use to be quite funny but now thay feel forced and just stupid, someone needs to tell the bitch in charge that it is not BEING HUMMAN ok so leave out that shit ok get back to SUPERNATURAL hunting the things that go bump in the night, getting laid by twins, driving the apolla listing to ac/dc and no chick flick moments,i want the old supernatural back ghosts, deamons, vamps,BOBBY,djinn, hellhounds, reapers, shapshiffters and yes even the jefferson starships ,thay have turnd a number 1 show to crap, i will keep watching but only for loyalty for dean, sam, garth and crowaly every one eles eat a fat one.

imo the only way to really finish the show of is to do season 9 with someone that knows horror, mate couse she has ruind it i was so hope full for this season but no ,go back to being human give the rights back to bob singer you are hopeless, its like she didnt even watch the show, sam should go back to drinking demon blood, dont think dean will care to much as he is letting benny live, sam needs more cover dean needs a cup of harden the fuck up ,brother you have escaped hell and pergatory you are the ultimate badass put your skills to use.

this wont make any sence reading this with all the spelling and grammer mistakes, but the show needs more supernatural,go back to season 1,2 and 3 learn what the pros did and work of that.

    peace.

p.s let jenson make more episodes
