I'm not really bashing them, though. I just don't like them as a couple. Leonard and Penny fight all the time and Leonard is a horrible boyfriend. To all his girlfriends, not just Penny. And she's completely unsure if she wants to even be with him!
They're two very different people, and Penny is used to dating a different kind of guy. She's a fun loving type of person and Leonard doesn't know how to have her type of fun. Plus, she's a HORRIBLE communicator. If she wants their relationship to be more exciting, Leonard would bend over backward to try and make it so.
As for Leonard being a horrible boyfriend, lets do a recap of everyone he has dated so far.
Leslie Winkle: Had a one night stand with him and then quite harshly shot him down before giving the relationship an actual try later on. She eventually dumps him because he didn't agree with her over Sheldon.
Penny (First time): They go out on one date and she backpedals because she doesn't believe they're a good fit for each other because their interests are so different.
Stephanie: This one was a little vague because the details of their breakup was unknown. The only real thing known is that Leonard became uncomfortable about how fast their relationship was going. She had practically moved into his apartment.
Penny (Second Time): They finally hook up and the relationship goes pretty well despite their differences. The relationship ends only when Penny discovers that she might not love him as much as he loves her. Of course, she was manipulated a bit but it only brought the truth out. Penny dumps him.
Priya (Both Times): As I recall, during her first appearance Leonard attempts to make their sexual relationship more committed, and she quite harshly blows him off. They agree to date later on, where Priya starts to enforce some rules, like the fact that he can no longer talk to Penny anymore, and she's a little controlling.
In the end she moves back to India. They try to keep up their relationship, but then she admits that she cheated on him with her ex. End of relationship.
I'm sorry, but besides Leonard misreading things all the time, and the fact that he needs to grow a spine and stand up for himself with the women he dates, most of the problems in his relationships came from the women he hated.
He was always loyal and dedicated to whoever he was dating at the time. He says stupid things (proposing during sex) but he has never done anything to emotionally hurt the women he's dated. Going down that list above, the same thing can't be said for them.
I agree with klutzy_girl, Penny and Leonard just don't match, no matter how hard they try, it just doesn't work out and it's irritating at times to watch the 'will they won't they' show. Leonard's not much of a boyfriend material either, he jumps into things way too fast, he's so needy and clingy. As seperate characters i love them both, but not together.
Poor Howard still getting picked on in space haha... and the best moment of the entire episode was Sheldon asking Penny not to hurt his friend... that was an "awww" moment if I ever saw one. I'm also really enjoying Stuart. I'm glad they're utilizing him more!
I'm not liking the Penny/Leonard stuff, I feel like they are just dragging things along and I just want to see some resolution so they can move on either together or apart. I don't think they can work out as long as Penny doesn't do some soul-searching. Leonard is pretty sure of what he wants, but Penny is always unsure on where she stands/were she wants to be/what she feels.
Which makes Penny the more interesting of the both, because Leonard is pretty simple as a character. So far as being boring. It just seems like the writers dropped the ball with him and can't give him any complexity. I just can't really see the reasons why Penny should love him. Where is that Leonard that gave her a snowflake from the north pole? Where is that romantic guy that fought to have a shot with her? Now he just seems complacent, when Penny needs more.
The more dark parts of me think that he just wants her like she is now, a waitress that will never amount more than that so he can provide for her- Penny deserves a man that wants for her to be everything she can be. Has he ever believed in her dreams? I just leave Leonard out of the hook because I don't believe he has that much self awareness.
At the end, I just wish the writers gave Penny a shot at her dream and REALIZE her already, then we could she if Leonard could be the supportive boyfriend. Until that point, Penny is still a WIP as a person, and as a character. I want this show to finally answer who is Penny.
Sheldon continues to be more and more human; Jim almost made me cry :(
Penny's a real bitch fro stringing Leonard along even though he treats her so good. Guess she needs to go back to dating dumb guys from the gym who cheat on her and never give treat her with respect. Move on to the new girl that's coming in Leonard, you deserve to be treated better than how Blondie treats you, she'll regret it....AGAIN, just like she did when you dated Priya.
Ahahah this episode was awesome! It was much much better than the premire IMO. I thought it was just an hillarious moment after the other. Loved the scene at the cinema with Amy and Sheldon, loved the Bernaddete conversation with Howard saying nice is the new cool, loved the Stuart replacement bits, loved the Howard face at the end and, most of all, the Sheldon-Penny moment in her bed ahah. Those two still are the best thing about this show. I laughed so much.
You have all good points. I just realized that when I see Penny/Leonard, I keep seeing them from seasons 2 and 3, when they were a rock solid, adorable couple.
I keep hoping they'll bring THOSE characters back, and get rid of the mess they've made of them in season 5.
Penny is afraid to admit that she loves Leonard. Plain and simple. She has a very immature attitude as to what love truly is. She almost has a fairy tale in her head and Leonard simply does not fit the dream of tall and handsome and sweeping her off her feet. He is the opposite of her Prince Charming except (he is definitely a cutie) She is just one of those immature I wanna be an actress girls.Leonard may have to be the one to break up with her and I believe that he MUST do that. He needs to tell her that he loves hers and wants her happiness even if it means not him. The girl needs a wake up call. Sheldon said it right "Please don't hurt my friend". The characters are evolving. Howard and Bernadette are a real couple. Sheldon and Amy although bizarre in many ways are also very mature I believe that they are in love and they go about it their own way. We all want Penny to wake up but I think that Leonard is the one that will have to finally be the one to make the move.
The AGAIN is exactly why they can't do that again. It would be redundant. Penny is trying to figure out how she feels. She just needs a catalyst to help her figure it out faster. My guess is that's what Sheldon's new assistant is for. Have the assistant flirt with Leonard enough to make Penny jealous and speed up her thinking. But they can't have them break up again or anything because that would be redundant. That's where they have to draw the line.
This whole Penny/Leonard thing is pissing me off. I mean,I like them together, but seems like they're exactly where they were last time. Penny is just leading him on. If she's bored with him, then just dump him already.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I wish Penny would just break up with Leonard already. That's the only part of the episode I didn't like.
ReplyDeleteAww at Sheldon being worried about his friend. That was sweet. Poor Howard.
And I am so looking forward to more of this Raj/Stuart storyline. Please let this continue. I loved the little we saw of them tonight.
Sheldon: "Penny... please dont hurt my friend" awww tear
ReplyDeleteThis Penny being unsure w/ Leonard is being a lil annoyed.
Again with the Penny and Leonard bashing. I just don't understand where this is coming from.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really bashing them, though. I just don't like them as a couple. Leonard and Penny fight all the time and Leonard is a horrible boyfriend. To all his girlfriends, not just Penny. And she's completely unsure if she wants to even be with him!

ReplyDeleteLeonard also nearly cheated on Priya himself.
ReplyDeleteHe proposed to Penny (when they were having sex) and then kept badgering her about it.
This exactly!
ReplyDeleteBut he didn't That's the major difference here. He didn't cheat on Priya because he cared about her.
ReplyDeleteAnd of course he badgered her about it. The last time he said something she wasn't ready for she dumped him.
Poor Howard still getting picked on in space haha... and the best moment of the entire episode was Sheldon asking Penny not to hurt his friend... that was an "awww" moment if I ever saw one. I'm also really enjoying Stuart. I'm glad they're utilizing him more!
ReplyDeleteI'm just so happy Penny and Leonard are still a couple. As much as she wants to deny it, Penny's in love with him, she's just scared.
ReplyDeleteBut Sheldon was such a sweetheart this episode. "Penny, please don't hurt my friend." God, I love Sheldon.

I have mix feelings about Penny and Leonard, but I don't think that Leonard is a bad boyfriend. Penny doing what she is doing is worst.
