I *wanted* to like it. But I remember the original - when the beast really was a beast. Having such a pretty beast seems like pandering. I didn't think there was a lot of chemistry between the two leads and I found the acting very wooden and forced.
I still don't understand. It followed the formula, it just doesn't work. I'm going to have to think about it. I'm interested in seeing studio changes next week. It's not like the original wasn't as campy and cheesy as all get out, if nothing else they need to stop taking themselves sooo seriously.
..scale 1 to 10 had 6.5 ..but you must add the tittle teen beauty and soap opera drama -drag beast because his acting was like that..total..blah,blah,blah.some snif, snif, drama
It kept me interested and will give it a few more eps to grow on me. Of all the shows I watch on CW, SPN, TVD, Hart of Dixie, Arrow, Beauty is in last place for me. It did get better toward the end of the ep, but it sure will not get the ratings that Arrow got last night.
WOW I'm truly confused about this show, first I never understood who was the beauty here, I don't know where this GORGEOUS guy was hidden but he CAN'T be called beast, at least not if it doesn't have some sexual connotation, second why all the police officers were so sexy?? all were dressed as super models, it was like the fashion police, I don't know, and third well there's not third, I don't know if I liked the show or it was just the fact that the lead actor practically provoked me an orgasm, but I'll watch it next week, and probably will watch it as long as it last, which according with the comments could be no more than a season.
Did you watch the show... when his face transformed when he got angry - during the flash back, the car park and subway scenes? And did you miss the part where they explained his DNA is supposedly mixed with other species?
That said I didn't really like the show... and Kristen Kruek was really bad (as usual) - especially doing the voice-overs. The whole thing was pretty predictable and I reckon anyone who can't make a fairly educated guess why the mother was killed after watching the pilot wasn't really watching it!
Made in Jersey only lasted two episodes... I think this'll last longer but not by much.
Well, it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. But it wasn't particularly good. My biggest issues were with the script (the murder case was really weak, scenes built on dialog that told us what we already knew because we were..you know...watching the show...) and the beast design. Vincent's back story....was painful to watch and I had to watch all of it.
The choreography of the fight in the subway was so far beyond ridiculous it was...ridiculous. The two back up assassins were so very polite. They waited their turn to step in and try to kill Catherine. The female assassin continued to pretend to be a bystandar through TWO fights....I don't know why. There was no one there to pretend for. Once her boss goes down she strolls over, calmly removes her headphones and then *waits* for Catherine to try and go for her gun before she attacks. Huh? And none of the "assassins" have guns!?!?!? Really!!! If that's the level of competency of this military unit no wonder the project failed.
The beast design just doesn't work for me. It's a main source of my logic problems. As it stands the logic of his staying hidden isn't holding up for me. This is freaking New York City this guy couldn't buy some fake ID? He's got a simple scar on his face. He could be in a nice apartment going to a job (other than being a doctor) and going about his life. There are millions of people in this country living their lives with fake ID. As long as he doesn't lose his temper he could go unnoticed. The super secret lair (er... creepy warehouse) isn't really necessary. However, if he were stuck in beast mode (and I'm going to skip over how bad the beast make up is) all of the secrecy and hiding would make sense.
I did believe Kristin Kreuk as a detective (I was worried I wouldn't), but the guy playing Vincent I had a bit of a problem for me. For example, is Vincent supposed to be in love with Catherine? They told us he's watched over her for 9 years but....the actor just didn't carry it enough for me to clearly know what was going on with him.
They gave us so much in the pilot that I'm thinking this show will be a simple cop show. There are tons of them out there and most of them are more interesting. There's no mystery to suss out with Vincent. I didn't get enough to care why her mother was killed so...if that's supposed to be the arc story...i'm not interested.
bad acting/ characters, it lost me interest halfway through Arrow was way better in my opinion, even emily owens was better, i kinda hope this fails because i am interested in The Selection and Cult of the 3 new CW shows i will only be watching Arrow
It was good. I wouldn't say perfect or brilliant. But it also wasn't that awful. It wasn’t actually original. We've seen it all before. How the mysterious thing or man saves the poor frighten girl, how they find each other later. The idea of playing with human DNA wasn't new either. I guess, after 100 years of films and several centuries of books it's hard to find something new and original. But the show seems solid. I'll watch the first season and then we'll see. I hope, they'll focus more on action and conspiracy than their romance and love relationship. It would make it more interesting to the fans, cause it's clear to anyone who watches TV that they will end up in bed by half of the season.
Followed the formula? You should know that following a known formula doesn't guarantee success. It was good. But as I said, it's hard to find something new and original. We've seen (or read) it all before. Besides: This should be a remake, right? Especially coming to their romance. It's so obvious they'll end up in bed. Will they be together? Won't they? Is it safe? He'll be holding back to protect her, … To make the show successful they should concentrate more on action and conspiracy. Otherwise it's just another soap opera (not my thing). Watched Arrow? That was awesome.
Real professionals (assassins) prefer knifes. Guns you can trace back, knifes you can't. Besides it has more style (of course Dexter is my favorite killer). But the choreography was weak, I agree on that. Fake ID? Ever heard of "big brother is watching"? You have any idea how many cameras you got on every street? He has to hide. If the government got the slightest idea that he is still alive they would use all this cameras to find him. I also have my problem with the story. It's not original enough (it's a remake). We've seen (or read) it all before. I just hope the show won't be another soap opera that focuses only on their relationship. As you said: they've got enough material. Like the government conspiracy. She's a cop, right? Give her some big cases. Or another version of the serum they give Vince and the others (government failed with this serum. Really believe, they gave up trying to create the "perfect soldier"?)
Yes, followed the formula. CW/WB shows like this have a formula. If you don't like that, I can't help you. But it usually works and has resulted in watchable and fun shows since Dawson's and Buffy. They stuck with the business model and it should work, but for some reason it isn't. I'm still trying to figure out where it went wrong, which I am sure is the same thing the network was thinking after they saw the pilot.
Maybe because there was not any chemistry between beauty and beast and the acting was wooden. I will watch again..and hope it gets better. Would love for my Thursday, TVD & Beauty to be as good as my Wed, Arrow & SPN.
I'm waiting until next week to finally decide, but I do agree that that might be the big problem. KK didn't have any chemistry with the beast or with the medical examiner, who should have been adorable, but just came across as a cold, jerky, womanizer. I want to see how it changes for episode 2, I'm expecting some major reworks. Until Burn Notice comes back I don't have anything else to watch Thursdays at 9, so I have the space to give it another chance. Agree, it would be great to have a solid Wed/Thursday lineup.
I have dish network's hopper so can record several things at the same time so don't have the problem with conflicts...thanks goodness. The nice thing about USA shows is they are on many times and can pick them up later if need be. I am looking forward to Suits, Covert Affair, White Collar and Burn Notice coming back. Oct 16th for CA.
I am so jealous of the hopper! I can only record/watch two shows at a time, so I have to utilize on demand pretty heavily some nights. USA is nice about re-airs and On Demand though. But I am mad at Covert Affairs right now, I still haven't watched the summer finale, Annie is annoying the crap out of me. I'm thinking of waiting to see if she learns her lesson in jail before I tune back in and get all angry again. It's a new thing I'm doing: not railing at shows that disappoint me, instead just not watching them. I miss Auggie, but it has freed up my TV schedule.
I didn't say that I don’t like networks following a formula. If it works, let them do it. I just said that it doesn't guarantee success. In some cases it just doesn't work out. Secret Circle is a good sample (I don't know if you watched it). It had secrets, conspiracies, fight for power, action, love triangles, suddenly found siblings you didn't know you have, a good cast, an interesting storyline, … Everything a good show needs. And it didn't work out.
And I like B&B. It was good. It just wasn't that great. Something is missing. Maybe the chemistry between the characters isn't right. Or the story is too weak. Or maybe it's just that we've seen it all before. Truth been told: most of the shows and movies in the last 10 years or so are copies (successful stories told in a new way, combined with other successful stories), remakes, sequels or based on books and comics. Not that I blame them. There is some good stuff. It's just hard to find something new and original.
I hope, that it will approve in the next few episodes. As I said, I'll stay with the first season. Then we'll see. The show has potential. I believe that. Guess that many shows have their problems at the beginning.
Was not as bad as I expected after reading all those reviews... It is not the most original story, but as many CW shows, it might need a few more episodes to get better.
In the ratings it did about as well as Secret Circle and we all know how that ended, even though I think this show might pick up the pace a bit more than SC did last year.
I am not a fan of Annie either or her sister, was glad she is not around as much, but LOVE Auggie. Have you seen him in Harper Island?? And have you seen Jensen in Ten Inch Hero? I have watched that several times and never get tired of it.
You're right there are a LOT of cameras on the streets but, in a city the size of New York, there is not enough man power to have someone watching all of those feeds looking for someone they don't, initially, believe is alive. In the real world, for the most part, that footage is used to grab evidence after a crime has been committed. There are too many known criminals running around New York City right now to get me to believe that he needed to live this kind of secluded life. He even said he's been going out and rescuing people and no one's gotten a picture of him. He's just leaving DNA around. (which, if they'd filed it in the national database would have set off red flags as to his existence a LOT sooner than Catherine's questions.) It just wasn't feasible for me.
If I said "they've got enough story" it was a typo. I intended to say they do not...they got it all out of the way in the pilot. Or at least they didn't leave any questions I'm interested it hearing the answers to. Now, I *really* like your idea of them having created new "perfect soldiers" that may have gone wrong. I think your idea would have instantly created a LOT more interest for me. If that girl in the hotel had been killed by someone like Vincent...that's a conspiracy. Gov't trying to hide what they did to soldiers isn't a conspiracy...it's SOP, but gov't trying to cover up something they let loose cause they messed up again....that I'd tune in to watch.
Of course there is not enough manpower to watch all the cameras 24/7. Therefore they got computer programs that can recognize faces. Wouldn't take long to find him.
He is just careful. Why take a risk? And he goes out just sometimes. He is hiding. Not comparing to get a job and leaving your apartment every day. About the DNA and fingerprints: did he ever heard of gloves and hats?
I wasn't kidding. With all the government secrets and experiments they would have enough to tell for more than one season. The government hunting him, sending killers after him (maybe even genetically manipulated soldiers). The experiments that were before, that came after. Then there is his search for a cure (if they could find the man who created the serum he could help), her mothers murder, of course their relationship, her keeping it (him) a secret from her friends and partner, …
The creation of a "perfect soldier" is not a movie fantasy of the last years. DNA manipulation would be just the latest idea. And I believe that the experiment Vincent was part of wasn't the first. And definitely not the last. That is how experiments work. You try something, you fail, you try again and again, till you succeed.
Why should it be only a conspiracy if the woman was killed by someone like Vince? It IS a conspiracy. The experiment was a secret and illegal (they didn't tell them what they were doing to them – they even lied. Besides: genetically manipulation in that form is, as far as I know, illegal), they kept it a secret, they killed, lied and destroyed evidence to keep it a secret. Even today, 10 years later, they threaten and blackmail people, they destroy evidence (like the body of that poor woman) and even kill. All to keep the experiments a secret. THAT is a conspiracy to me. Vincent (or someone like him) wasn't the killer. But he was there, he was involved. So they came, made evidence disappear and were going to kill a NY cop. How you call that?
And I think, that her mother knew something about it. Remember when she said (in his lab) that she remembers all that stuff her mother had lying around. Was she scientist? Seems so. She was killed. I believe, that they manipulated Catherines car to get her mother out there. Alone in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night. I mean: they didn't try to rape or rob them. They just started shooting. It was a job. Guess, we'll get to know what her mother was doing and who she worked for. IF I'm right. But even if I am right, her mother couldn't be a big fish. If she were, Catherine wouldn't have need to bartend to get her tuition. Her mother would have enough money.
You don't have to like my ideas. Those are just my ideas of how to make the show more interesting (how I would do it). You have yours.
If they concentrate only on their relationship it's just a soap opera to me. Maybe they meant it like a soap opera. I don't know. I'm not a big fan of those. Maybe you are. We all have our favorites.
I work in the industry with software that does image processing, manipulation, etc. Running through all the data generated by the CCTV cameras in New York City...simple isn't realistically feasible...in the real world. Sorry. It's one of those little bits where I have trouble going with TV Science.
"You don't have to like my ideas. Those are just my ideas of how to make the show more interesting (how I would do it). You have yours."
Please, re-read what I said... I LOVED YOUR idea about the other perfect soldiers being out there. I said I would have been far more interested if they had done something like YOU mentioned. I wasn't disagreeing with you at all.
With a hopper 6 shows can be recorded between 7-10PM Central time. The hopper does NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX during those hours and I can then record 2 more. Other times of the day I can do 3 at a time.
I saw Suits was renewed and did a happy dance, love that show.
I saw the pilot episode and when he explained the joining the army/experiment part is a reminder to the bourne saga lol where in the third film we find out jason bourne joined a experiment and guess what he was in the army too lol
Good thing i re-watched The Bourne Movies over and over lol...Whats your take on The Bourne Legacy?
Also when the M.E. said he found 6 dna's in other places i thought i be like oh shit he's buddies are alive lol then in the end it turned out it was him lol
I have watched all the Bourne movies several times and really enjoyed them, that is the kind of movie I like. Lots of action, which is why I liked Fast Five so much. Just stupid stunts and action. I am glad you brought up the connection, I will watch Beauty with a new eye. lol
Would that connection be the 6 DNA's in other places thinking it was his buddies alive when in the end it was him lol?
Im sensing that the organization will make their presences know and im bit interested bout the mother's death and idk why but something tells me she was the doctor for the organization or i could be wrong lol
But the idea of his army buddies being alive now that would be a hell of fight one good beast vs 6 rogue beasts lol
POI--I have watched some, but as with most CBS shows they hold onto their content so tightly that if I don't watch live I get behind (H50 is the same thing), and it isn't destination television for me, it's more like a "needs a Prozac" Burn Notice. I suspect I'll get caught back up someday, but right now I'm out of date.
Elementary--hate Lucy Liu, always hated Lucy Liu. Watched the pilot still hate Lucy Liu. JLM has his moments but it is a nothing-special procedural with Lucy Liu.
Scandal--Don't like Shonda Rhimes or Kerry Washington. And the continued idea of the premise was too absurd for me.
Last Resort--Premise. Don't like any of the characters. I was a Noel kid, Ben doesn't do anything for me. And I think the show is very outdated in it's views of world politics and the American military. But mainly because it is absurd and I am not rooting for the dude threatening nuclear war against the US, since he hasn't gotten sent to Guantanamo yet, I'm not on board yet.
The pilot was good! I liked it, I liked the premise (regardless of all the comments) and when I read the reviews I expected it to be awful but it was not, I had higher expectations because: a) I didnt like KK in Smallville, i liked her here. b) I liked Jay Ryan since Sea Patrol and I was really interested in seeing him in a darker role. I saw the pilot and I cant agree on every bad review, yes, it wasnt perfect but it wasnt hideous, it shows potential and I hope, as many shows have done, it will improve as the episodes progress.
You better get caught on Burn Notice bc this season got even interesting and when they return next month it will bring hell at it's worst mood by Michael lol
Considering CW shows like to 'follow the formula' and CW is one of the lowest rated networks... maybe it doesn't 'usually work'. Hate to say this, because I love CW because they love SPN, but...
Followed the formula? It has nothing in common with the show it is based on, aside the choice of the names. The original Cathrine was a rich girl, who lived a meaningless live until her face got slashed and Vincent rescued her. She got her beauty back after expensive operations, but also decided that she didn't want to life her meaningless anymore. So she changed job and went to a guy who taught her to fight "dirty", using everything available to her to her advantage. Vincent was, for starters, really beastly looking. He was a beautiful soul in a monstrous shell and he was born this way. The love story with Cathrine was really about looking behind the faccade of things...and it was a two way street. The same way he was seen as a monster, she was always seen as this rich beautiful girl, so people never expected her to be more. But Vincent did. Nevermind the whole world-building they had going on with the society in the sewers. The original had a fairy-tale like quality to it. This was just awful. Shallow, unbelievable character who did boring stuff with a lot of unnecessary pathos.
A) The WB/CW formula. B) You have a much much higher opinion of a cheese-tastic but ultimately fun original than I have. Vincent wasn't "beastly" he looked like a furry cat. But you are welcome to idealize it if you want.
He looked beastly enough to pass as some sort of beast and to explain why people might react badly to him. I don't see what is off-putting about an artfully scar in an otherwise beautiful face. And yes, it was cheese, but there were some great ideas underneath the cheese (the third season was crab, though).
I'm not sure why you are pushing a point on this thread it is really old and the show has developed a good bit since the pilot.
I'm pretty indifferent to changing things up, I don't think it takes anything away from the original. This beast is more of a hulk than a permanent kitty cat, I think it is partly because we've learned in the last three decades that it is more fun if all the characters leave the sewer and can interact and--in this case--investigate. No one would put up with the dual exposition in the sewer no action crap anymore, we expect faster paced TV. Katherine can protect herself most of the time, that's a change and one that also reflects the times. She isn't weak, but it does add issues of personal morality vs social morality. But regardless the show isn't that serious of a show and frankly neither was the original, which did have its roots in fairytales, so it would just as easily be a re-imagining of those fairytales as it is the older show.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I *wanted* to like it. But I remember the original - when the beast really was a beast. Having such a pretty beast seems like pandering. I didn't think there was a lot of chemistry between the two leads and I found the acting very wooden and forced.

LOL. A+
ReplyDeleteIt was good definetly not as bad as some critics would led you to believe. I enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteBwahahaha Touche, you are right.

Awful is the option closest to what was on screen, but you should consider adding boring with extreme prejudice to the alternatives.

ReplyDeleteI didn't say that I don’t like networks following a formula.
ReplyDeleteAnd I like B&B.
ReplyDeleteIn the ratings it did about as well as Secret Circle and we all know how that ended, even though I think this show might pick up the pace a bit more than SC did last year.
lol!!, I was being sarcastic, of course I know Vincent is the beast, but he's so hot, that even as a beast he looks beautiful to me.
ReplyDeleteI am not a fan of Annie either or her sister, was glad she is not around as much, but LOVE Auggie. Have you seen him in Harper Island?? And have you seen Jensen in Ten Inch Hero? I have watched that several times and never get tired of it.
ReplyDeleteYou don't watch POI or Elementary on Thursday or Scandal or Last Resort lol
ReplyDeleteTNT n USA are good networks because they air the fresh episodes and then repeat later at night...same goes with TBS n FX
ReplyDeleteYep, most of the cable channels repeat, I love that.
ReplyDeleteYou're right there are a LOT of cameras on the streets but, in a city the size of New York, there is not enough man power to have someone watching all of those feeds looking for someone they don't, initially, believe is alive. In the real world, for the most part, that footage is used to grab evidence after a crime has been committed.
ReplyDeleteThere are too many known criminals running around New York City right now to get me to believe that he needed to live this kind of secluded life.
LOL Oh that's awesome! I completely missed that.
ReplyDeleteOf course there is not enough manpower to watch all the cameras 24/7. Therefore they got computer programs that can recognize faces. Wouldn't take long to find him.
ReplyDeleteHe is just careful.
ReplyDelete"You don't have to like my ideas.
Well. I actually found Kristen Kreuk likable and somewhat relatable. Other than that, meh.
ReplyDeleteIt was OK but for me Kristen Kruek didn't work as a NY detective.
ReplyDeleteIf they follow your ideas I would be there for the ride, sounds like the kind of stories I love.
ReplyDeleteSuits was renewed for Season 3!!!!
ReplyDeleteI have direct tv where i can record only two shows lol bc i have one tv lol
how many you record?
With a hopper 6 shows can be recorded between 7-10PM Central time. The hopper does NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX during those hours and I can then record 2 more. Other times of the day I can do 3 at a time.
ReplyDeleteI saw Suits was renewed and did a happy dance, love that show.
what if you got one tv lol
ReplyDeleteI saw the pilot episode and when he explained the joining the army/experiment part is a reminder to the bourne saga lol where in the third film we find out jason bourne joined a experiment and guess what he was in the army too lol
Nope. Sure don't.
ReplyDeleteI only have one TV.
ReplyDeleteI also love and have the Bourne DVDs and yes that is what I thought of also.
Good thing i re-watched The Bourne Movies over and over lol...Whats your take on The Bourne Legacy?
ReplyDeleteAlso when the M.E. said he found 6 dna's in other places i thought i be like oh shit he's buddies are alive lol then in the end it turned out it was him lol
I have watched all the Bourne movies several times and really enjoyed them, that is the kind of movie I like. Lots of action, which is why I liked Fast Five so much. Just stupid stunts and action. I am glad you brought up the connection, I will watch Beauty with a new eye. lol
ReplyDeleteWhy not?
ReplyDeleteWould that connection be the 6 DNA's in other places thinking it was his buddies alive when in the end it was him lol?
ReplyDeleteIm sensing that the organization will make their presences know and im bit interested bout the mother's death and idk why but something tells me she was the doctor for the organization or i could be wrong lol
ReplyDeleteElementary--hate Lucy Liu, always hated Lucy Liu.
ReplyDeleteYou better get caught on Burn Notice bc this season got even interesting and when they return next month it will bring hell at it's worst mood by Michael lol
ReplyDeleteConsidering CW shows like to 'follow the formula' and CW is one of the lowest rated networks... maybe it doesn't 'usually work'. Hate to say this, because I love CW because they love SPN, but...
ReplyDeleteI love CW because I love the formula.
ReplyDeleteFollowed the formula? It has nothing in common with the show it is based on, aside the choice of the names. The original Cathrine was a rich girl, who lived a meaningless live until her face got slashed and Vincent rescued her. She got her beauty back after expensive operations, but also decided that she didn't want to life her meaningless anymore. So she changed job and went to a guy who taught her to fight "dirty", using everything available to her to her advantage.
ReplyDeleteVincent was, for starters, really beastly looking.
ReplyDeleteB) You have a much much higher opinion of a cheese-tastic but ultimately fun original than I have.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure why you are pushing a point on this thread it is really old and the show has developed a good bit since the pilot.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty indifferent to changing things up, I don't think it takes anything away from the original.
