  1. We need a "freaking awesome" option.

    I am *so* impressed.

  2. Another awesome episode. And next week...DEADSHOT!!!!!!!

  3. Deadshot! The thing I love about adaptations is that you know what to expect and yet you don't know what to expect.

My favorite movies are ones where I have read the book and, likewise, my favorite tv shows are ones where I know the source material.

I like the ones that are faithful (Lord of the Rings) and I like the ones that are mad-ass unique (True Blood).

  4. After two episodes, this show has grabbed me more then any of the other new shows this year so far, lets hope they keep it that way.

  5. Awesome episode again!

A couple improvements tonight for me...The voice-overs worked better for me tonight and the hint of soap opera tripe I was worried about was not there tonight. Both improvements make me quite happy! XD
It feels like the show is a cross between Revenge and Dexter with the action scenes of Nikita. All -in-all that's not a bad thing really....
The flashbacks worked for me and hopefully continue since they are one of the more interesting parts of the show to me. The back story of how Oliver Queen became Arrow.
It's always nice when a second episode improves on an already excellent pilot. Whatever worries I had from the pilot were erased after this episode... at least for now.

  6. I KNEW IT!!!
I knew that the sinking of the yacht was sabotage and that Moira either had a hand in it or planned the whole damned thing by herself!!!
So who's the guy that shot Oliver on the rocky hill after he buried his father?

  7. Mommie dearest in Chanel. She rocks out the evil beauty archetype, though, I must say. She's so arrogant. I love the characterization, hate the character :)

In the origin mythology of Green Arrow, he discovers a tribe of natives when he is shipwrecked. When he saves ... um ... there be possible/likely spoilers in there, I suppose ... but it's part of the public domain so .... anyway, he saves them from drug runners and they give give him the name Lanu Lau'Ava, which means Green Arrow in their language. So maybe the shooter was a smuggler or other non related bad guy.

  8. I am guessing either deathstroke or deadshot

  9. Yes, I thought the voice overs were really well done this week. Or I am used to them :)

Comics are very soap opera-y (if you mean hyperbolic and melodramatic) so I wasn't put off by it, but, like you, I am pleased to see a more conservative dramatic approach.

*Love* the flashbacks, I like acted out exposition instead of spoken ... unless Gandalf can be hired to read all exposition into the dialogue :) I like how the narrative does not really expose so much as it represents the internal dialogue / thoughts of Oliver or acts as a sort of omni directional announcement.

I am so impressed with the cinemaphotography/photography (and all the attendant disciplines - lighting, costuming, location, set design, etc.) that I tend to have to watch twice because I am so interested in the visual/graphic story being told. It is VERY comic-book/graphic novel-ish in visual presentation.

What else did moira say other than sabatoging the yaht?

Great episode loved china white the fighting was great and the drama was great especially with detective lance and laurel. I was sad to see oliver in the end have to be the crappy guy in front of everyone but he's doing it for his father to protect the people he love and we understand. The characters with oliver are having their great moments as well especially diggle, thea and moira. That evil bitch moira sabatoged the yaht! she was gonna kill oli and his father! Thats a terrible mother and person i wonder who the mystery guy but i feel like its barrowman lol. We need more Merlyn tho i think he didnt have a whole lot in this. Deadshot next week! deathstroke in 3 weeks and huntress in 5! excited

deathstroke and deadshot dont use bow and arrows and deathstroke i dont think would've worn that we saw he had his signature mask in the pilot

  12. I'm not familiar with the Green Arrow universe and mythos or his back story, but maybe the man Oliver saw that shot him was not a real person? Maybe it was a delusion caused by hunger or pain or dehydration etc......

I've been thinking since last week how interesting it would be to see a modern man transition into his more primal form in touch with his darker animal side... Maybe that was Oliver loosing touch with his humanity and becoming more animal, a more weaponized survival machine?

Of course it certainly did look like a real physical person that shot him though so maybe that theory is way off..... Dunno.
    *Shrug*

  13. Interesting....
I was wondering if there was some element of his back story that fit with a lone man attacking him. Smugglers would.

  14. Another great episode, after this I am positive that I will be with this show for the long haul. I agree with the comments everyone said last week now though... those voice overs have got to go.. it just doesn't seem to fit. I cant wait till next week and his mom is so shady... that boat accident was planned i wonder if Walter had a part in it too.

actually darque thats a good theory but i think if we knew he wasnt alone on the island it'd b more reasonable. while i seriously doubt its either deadshot or deathstroke i think this person maybe his mentor because u can only learn so much on an island....by yourself. idk its a good theory.

  16. I can't believe how much I like this show, it doesn't seem a CW show, this guy Stephen Amell is not just gorgeous but a very good actor also, my respects.

  17. Awesome. Really keeps up momentum.

  18. wow I have NEVER seen a poll with so many votes yet not a single "Awful" vote.

  19. Great show lots of action but plenty of introspection and the voice over really fills in the tale.

  20. I had the distinct impression that the writers of this episode didn't know that the pilot was going to be aired the week before this episode or they expected a lot of people to have missed the pilot and checked in for the first time on ep two. Some of the moments where they repeated the plot elements we got in the pilot were a little klunky for me. (especially Laurel's speech in the courthouse)

One lesson I've learned from television, movies and books....you never THREATEN to tell the police. You simply go tell them. Don't let anyone know you're planning to.
I am loving the body guard Digg. The elements of Oliver reconnecting with his family were great. I love that his sister was the only one willing to 'tell him bout himself' :-) This was the part of the episode that had me hooked the most. His sister's desire to *really* get him back and his mother's desire to make him into her fantasy of him; into his father maybe? It was difficult for me to nail down what was really going on. It's intriguing. I love it. The only thing that really bothered me was that I wished his definition of what who Oliver wanted people wanted to see him as wasn't pinging so close to Bruce Wayne that it kicked me out of the story for a moment.
The thing I found most astoundingly bad was the editing. They broke for commercial in the middle of an action sequence? Really? I've seen shows put breaks (literally) 30 or 40 seconds after the previous one so they could run a sequence straight through. I really wish the editor had thought to do something like that, because this was so bad that I popped out of the story to start critiquing the editing and that should NEVER happen. Then there was the editing around the mannequin when Oliver found the book.
Also, it's definitely time to get rid of the voice over. I do NOT need to hear Oliver TELL ME what I just watched happen.
Despite those technical issue I thought it was an awesome episode.

  21. Except that the guy who shot him was wearing the jacket from the pilot. I assumed this was his future trainer. (I was never a Green Arrow reader...just caught him when he crossed into other books so I'm a little clueless on any of his origin stories. I know DC likes to redo them periodically.)

  22. Came across the poster version of the promo banners earlier this month....

  23. That's one of the things I'm loving...we've known since the pilot that he couldn't have been alone. Who taught him conversational Russian or Mandarin(?).

    ReplyDelete
  24. But I have to disagree with you on the voice over...well the one in the middle in particular. It added nothing to the episode. It just restated what we'd we knew from watching the episode. I didn't need to be told on top of that because I actually pay attention when I watch good shows. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Wow. hee hee...I'm so sorry but that poster just strikes me as silly. lol

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yeah.. I just shared it without commenting.
    But yeah! XD

    ReplyDelete
  27. I updated a number most of the cast photos to HQ or at least larger versions and added some new posters or new versions of old posters.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh I could do without the voice overs! XD
However I did think the actor was better this time around than in the pilot.

I really don't mind the voice over at the beginning of the episode to introduce the episode theme or insert a little exposition, but yeah... sometimes it's just unwarranted and distracting.

  29. Surprisingly good for a show based on a Comic book character.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I see people comparing this to Revenge, but I only see parallels with Batman Begins. We even got Applied Sciences in this episode. Also, the lights being killed around Sommers... it's the same thing that happened at the docks when Falcone was caught. I actually like that it draws from BB. Also, motivation is similar - clean up the corrupt city. The projected image is similar - drunken m(b)illionaire playboy.
One thing that I think could be better is Arrow voice. Hartley's, from Smallville, worked better for me. Otherwise, it is a very promising start, and I'm glad ratings are great.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oh I'm not complaining, but maybe others were.
I think Revenge sticks in my mind because of the son having a the list of his father's peers with a journal of evidence against them. He even had a keepsake box with engravings on it in the pilot and that is quite similar to Revenge with Emily having the double eternity box and all the evidence she has been using to get payback on people who wronged her father.

Honestly though I think there are a number of revenge heroes/ vigilante stories around and Batman Begins fits as well as any for the reasons you mentioned.

I can see why they went a different direction from Justin Hartley as Arrow though and Stephen Amell is winning me over even if I liked Hartley's voice more too.... Maybe they are trying to stand out from the more authoritative, horse and deep voices like Hartley's or Batman's?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes, the boxes and the journal, I see now. Though, I found it surprising that it was empty when Queen pulled it off his father, which means he himself filled it later while on that island. I have to admit, I am currently even more intrigued with what he found there than what is to come for him. I see in reviews that there are various clues already as to what was on the island, but as I haven't read the comics, I will miss all of it, sadly. However, we should get some of the answers (who shot him?) soon enough

  33. It's official. I want to lobby for the replacement of the bulk of the decision making staff in the CW marketing department. :-) The pre-season promos were, in general bad at the job of getting the viewers excited to check out their shows. And a lot of their publicity photos look like amateur photoshop users had a field day. Sigh. :-)

Best new TV show of the year. Lets hope ratings soar and the show find more audience than some other lame shows like the neighbours.

  37. TBH I was toying with it, but softened to poor instead. xD

    ReplyDelete
  38. I wasn't thrilled. :( I wasn't "in love" with the pilot, maybe it was the bad island hair, maybe it was too much action without a lot of explanation. We're burning through bad guys without any development of why they are bad, save that they are in the book. Maybe I feel like I'm watching a live action comic of Revenge, but Stephen Arnell makes Emily VanCamp look positively emotive. Maybe it was the voice over. So my happiness with the pilot was tepid.

But, I had higher hopes for the second episode. Figured no more voiceover, don't need to waste time with background exposition, we're gonna find the bad guy, set him up, have a few fights, Katie Cassidy will get some scenes in which to be awesome, all good. But then, it turned out that Arnell's voiceovers were better than his actual dialogue. He needs to be roguish and charming and he isn't. He's got the right stare, but he doesn't have the charisma. His whole family is awful. That sister whining about how she wished he'd come back to her in a completely selfish way...I wanted to shake her and be like "he was stranded on a dessert island and you can't take a thought for hoping that he'd be okay without reference to your needs?" I don't even know what Ollie's personality is supposed to be vs what he's playing at. Both are callous, unfeeling, selfish jerks, only the fake one is supposed to be fun? I feel like I'm filling in gaps with the Batman Begins script. It's just not good at all. But as much as I don't like any of the characters or their performances, what I couldn't forgive was them making Katie Cassidy shriek and run into his arms in her apartment after the bad guys came. That was unforgivable to me. She is awesome and can be such a great badass, and all we've got is her whining at her dad, talking tough and then crying when what she's been saying actually happens. Please, that is the worst WORST misuse of awesome ever. And they couldn't even brush her hair. Yuck.

I like the way he only has the eyeshadow disguise when the hood is up, he never puts it on and when he removes the hood it just goes away, must save a ton of money on makeup remover.

I'll give it another week to find it's legs, to get out of trying to set stuff up and get on with personality and relationship development. He's got to be more than abs and scars.

  39. You're right:
It reminds me on Batman Begins too.

    Pretending to
be who he was and in secrecy cleaning up the city.

  40. Good show.
    Getting better and better.

    What a
bitch getting his husband and only son killed. No wander she stopped visiting
the gravestones after a couple of weeks.

    So he
wasn't alone on that island. I can't say I'm surprised. I mean: where did he
get the bow and arrows from, if he was alone on that peace of hell.

  41. Amazing new show!! Even if each episode would last 1 1/2 hours I would still love it and be completely interested! Hate it to wait another week for a new ep!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Wow! The episode was much better than the pilot! I hope it keeps improving like this

    ReplyDelete
  43. in the most simplest way to put it, Revenge + Nikita = Arrow. Pure Awesomeness. Also I thought China White looked a lot like Lady Deathstrike

    ReplyDelete
  44. Was so pleased that the show managed to maintain the quality of the pilot. Great action scenes and character interaction and development. Loving Diggle and that he can see a little behind Oliver's facade. Only a few minor issues - the dialogue was a bit cliched in places but it's early days and I'm also finding Laurel a bit annoying - but there's time to round her character out. Overall, I'm loving Arrow and the developing mystery about the island and the sinking of the yacht is enough to keep me hooked.

    ReplyDelete
  45. it was possibly even better than the premiere. So amazing. The show reminds me a lot of batman and of revenge, I love it! I was shocked by a bunch of things in this episode. I definetely did not see the yatch being sabotaged, but i most definetely did not see the other green arrow on the island reveal coming. I love both the flashbacks and the present day action. Also, I find myself connecting with all the characters (I LOVE Katie Cassidy) and I am enjoying the bodyguard a lot too. And Oliver is just badass. Perfect show, well done cw!
