Thanks to CJDavey for the following.
New, lengthy and in depth radio interview (audio) with The Mentalist creator/executive producer/show runner, Bruno Heller on the show. Most of it discusses the show as a whole in depth (the genesis of the show, the individual characters, certain episodes etc.) and there is also a portion towards the end regarding the upcoming 5th season. Very good listen!

Great interview!
ReplyDelete"sharp and predatory understanding of humanity" I love this description of mentalists. It totally fit Jane.
The ambiguity of Jane interests me the most in the show, especially his moral ambiguity.
I tend to think that what drives jane is revenge, but Heller reminded me that Guilt is what drives him.
In Jane mind, it's his own hubris that caused his family death. In a symbolic way, Patrick Jane is fighting against himself.
Bruno Heller: "red john is basically the personification of death"
Great comparison between RJ and moby dick. RJ has some kind of mythical elusive aspect.
Like in Melville book, good and evil are blurred.
RJ is Jane obsession, let's hope our mentalist won't finish like Achab.
Lisbon (to jane)"don't try and divert me with insults!"
she knows Jane too well ;-)
Simon and Robin have become very good friends and, Bruno explains
that this complicity shows in the relation between the
characters. The show creator smartly use that instead of creating hostility between Jane and Lisbon.
"Both characters are emotionally shut down" ... Well, tell us something we don't know!
:-D
Bruno doesn't strike me as a shipper but he doesn't close the door,
I'm totally on the same page about that :-)
About the new season:
"shocking truth will be revealed!"
Heller says that we're moving in the final act of the show; we'll learn a great deal about RJ.
Very happy about that. Give me more Red John! \o/
Agreed 100% on all points, such a brilliant interview and I cannot wait for this season!
