Supernatural - Ultimate Episode Round 3G - Polls
Sep 18, 2012
Polls SupernaturalIn overwhelming victories that leave no doubt that round 4 will be brutal, Lazarus Rising and What is and What Should Never Be trampled Appointment in Samarra and Faith. I can't be the only one to wish these two episodes were on opposite brackets. I would have loved it if both were in the final four but alas only one can progress beyond round 4. So many great episodes are leaving the contest these days. (Huge sigh.) Today's episodes don't inspire near as much passion from me but there's not a bad one in the bunch. I expect one to be a total blow-out. As for the other, well it won't shock me if it's a blow-out or somewhat close. Don't think it will be a nail biter though. I guess it will depend on the 30 extra voters we've picked up and whether they like meta or not. By the way, welcome new voters. Glad to have you with us.
We're up to When the Levee Breaks for our quote hunt and I have to say this was by far the worst episode to get through transcribing so far. Way, way, way too depressing for me. Who knew the Apocalypse would be more joyful than the year before it and it was sunk it the pit of despair too? Anyway, glad to get this episode over with. Nominate your 2 most depressing quotes and we'll all emoangst together. But then, happy voting!

Today I'm going with gut feeling instead of laboriously trying to reason the vote out. In all honesty I don't care which ones win today so I choose The French Mistake and It's a Terrible Life. TFM gets the vote in a coin flipper because it did something I never thought could happen - it made me like a true metasode. It's one I can rewatch over and over again and still laugh. Not bad for the episode I was dreading the most in the entire series run. All Hell Breaks Loose, part 1 pales to part 2 for me although I'm good if it goes on. I loved getting Andy back and Aldis Hodge is always a plus. I also liked how we got more back story on YED.
ReplyDeleteSurprisingly I like It's a Terrible Life best out of all the episodes today. It benefits from perfect timing. In a sledgehammer of emoangsty despair, IaTL is a beacon of light and brotherly goodness. It has saved my sanity more times than I can count when I'm stuck in a season 4 rewatch and for that alone it gets my vote. Add to it that it is funny, an interesting flip of the brothers, the introduction of Zachariah, and has more great brother moments than all the remaining episodes of season 4 combined and I'm good with it heading to round 4. Not that it will. This is going to be a blow-out. I thoroughly enjoyed Meet the New Boss when it aired but it doesn't repeat well with me. Maybe it's because it's a presidential election year and I'm inundated with obnoxious political ads on every side, but the more I watch MtNB the more its constant, "in your face" political and religious marketing annoys me.
The first one is though. But I gotta go with AHBL, that episode was sublime.
ReplyDeleteSecond poll is easier, Meet the New Boss.
1. All Hell Breaks Loose Part 1- I don't like meta all that much. AHBL, whether Part 1 or 2 is/are better than The French Mistake in quality. I don't like it when everything in an episode is one big joke. Sure, a slap stick is funny, but to re-watch episodes, I prefer ones with substance.
ReplyDelete2. Meet The New Boss- Over It's A Terrible Life.
I don't like season 6. Yes, there are good episodes, but none of them can beat other episodes from other seasons. (ok, except for Bugs or Route 666...lolol) The French Mistake is cool, but overrated. All Hell Breaks Loose is a way better. It's Season 2. It's AHBL.
ReplyDeleteThe second poll was easier. I thought people would vote for Meet the New Boss, but no. I'm surprised! Meet the New Boss is almost season 6, so. I don't like it. I don't like what they did to Castiel. He could never be transformed in villain. He should have gone to heaven and that's it.
:)
I like all episodes today, but I prefer action over comedy, su I voted All Hell Breaks Loose 1 and Meet The New Boss...
ReplyDeleteSo sad to see Faith go, such a good episode. And anything with Death is great too, so I'm sad for Appointment in Samarra too...
The French Mistake was funny, but I have to go with All Hell Breaks Loose part 1. I was surprised Ava turned out to be evil and was sad to see Andy die, I liking seeing Azazel again, and it was heartwrenching when Sam died.
ReplyDeleteAs for the second poll? I was glad they fixed Castiel, to this day I don't believe Castiel would act like that. I'm sure it was the souls and Leviathans from Purgatory. I'm glad Castiel 'died' as he always does, trying to protect the Winchesters ( fighting to keep the Leviathans) I don't really like season 7 (I do like certain episodes, but the season over all/ in general was eh) I think I'm going to have to go with It's a Terrible Life, or I would, if I hadn't loved how Misha acted in Meet the New Boss. Leviathan Cas was awesome.
Hi, I also love It's a Terrible Life much better than MTNB and even the other epis in the other poll. I hadn't realized before that this episode flips the brothers. Sam is more inclined to hunt at the beginning and Dean is eating healthy and clings longer to 'normal life'. Dean Smith has got also a better education than Sam, although Sam has a better insight about their real 'call' and their real relationship, opposite as it is in real life. They also flip positions with the Ghosfacers, who adopt the role of expert 'hunters' while they are just new in the business. It's just a great alternative universe which brings to the table the depth of the Winchesters' call to hunt.
ReplyDeleteI love how they flipped the brothers in this whereas in What is and What Should Never Be they made them into more of a caricature of themselves. Love both episodes.
ReplyDeleteI would have chosen AHBL1 - I love the sense of mystery, and all special kids - but I misread it as AHBL2, so I voted for TFM. AHBL2 I just find too upsetting to be enjoyable in any way. It's emotional torture-porn. I'm not down with that.
ReplyDeleteAnd then MTNB - I actually think that IATL is all around a stronger episode (it definitely has better pacing IMO), but Levi!Cas was the best 40 seconds of the entire season, and is one of my favourite moments of the entire show. So I voted for Levi!Cas
Faith leaving is the hardest for me to take so far and I didn't even vote for it. So unfair to have such fabulous episodes all in the same section of the bracket and have others that don't compare at all to Faith still in.
ReplyDeletethe french mistake and meet the new boss....the first one was a tough decision though!i loved all hell breaks loose and while i would usually vote for a dramatic episode over a comedy i voted for the french mistake cause it was AWESOME!and we got to see balthazar again!one of my favorite angels:)
ReplyDeleteFound these two polls not as hard as the others. I went for The French Mistake simply because it's much more re-watchable than All Hell Breaks Loose Pt. 1. I'll watch pt. 2 over and over, but Pt. 1 not so much. I'll also go with It's a Terrible Life. Loved all the camera tricks - the saturation right up until Dean figured out who Zacahriah was and remembered who he really was, then it flattened out into the de-saturated Supernatural I'm used to. I thought that was a great touch. Also loved the montage of "Dean Smith" with his latte and Prius and talk radio. All things the real Dean wouldn't be caught dead with. :) Loved the trick with the names; Dean "Smith & Sam "Wesson". Great switch up for Winchester. Lots of good stuff in that one. Meet the New Boss was okay, but not one of my favorite premieres and I wasn't thrilled with season 7 as a whole. I'll also refrain from quotes from When the Levee Breaks. Too angsty for me.
ReplyDeletecouldn't vote for the first poll. i love both of them too much and can't bring myself to decide between them.
ReplyDeletesecond one was easy. i don't mind its a terrible life but i don't love it. meet the new boss on the other hand was one of my favourite, if not my favourite, episode of season 7 and it was just awesome the whole way through. easily wins my vote.
No problems today.

AHBL Part 1
A perfect first parter to the season finale, we get to see old faces; we get the mystery of the children revealed and it finishes off with the death of Sam; such a sad traumatic scene but beautiful in its execution.
Sam died so emotionally, his shaggy head flopping down on Dean's shoulder, and how could one not share his big brother's pain. Sniff!
X
It's A Terrible Life; a sweet and amusing episode from start to finish.
The brothers having no memory of their relationship, but gravitating towards each other just the same.
A wonderful episode and for me, a thousand times better than the French Mistake in every aspect.
Quotes:-
ReplyDeletex
" Dean: "I would die for him in a second but I won't let him do this to himself. I can't. I guess I found my line. I won't let my brother turn into a monster."
x
I love protective Dean, that's his essence, protecting and defending his little brother. :)
X
X
"Bobby: "Correct me if I'm wrong but you willingly signed up to be the angels' b**. I'm sorry. You prefer sucker? After everything you said about them. Now you trust them." Dean: "Oh give me a little credit Bobby. I've never trusted them less. I mean they come on like shady politicians from planet Vulcan."
X
This quote says it all as far as angels are concerned, and it is still actual up to season seven, anyway.
Dean's the angels' sucker and Sam's Ruby's. Everything is fair and square.
Each brother gets manipulated by a supernatural being.
Finally an easy day French Mistake and It's a Terrible Life (I am Not a fan of Meet the New Boss)
ReplyDeleteI agree with you...the attempts to describe TFM gave no indication of how good that ep was going to turn out to be.
ReplyDeleteSo do you have a count on your series rewatch meter? I know you've been re-watching to collect quotes ( I surrendered there)
Shockingly we'ver logged the same votes two days in a row. :-)
Voted for All Hell Breaks Loose Pt 1 and Meet the New Boss.
ReplyDeleteThat's right, Dean Smith's choices in food, car and radio programming are big changes in his personality. The point is that in spite of all those changes he will always be a hunter at heart.
ReplyDeleteAHBL 1 and IATL
ReplyDeleteAHBL part 1 is one of my favourite episodes of the whole series love it from start to finish, especially the last scene. The only time this show has ever made me cry.
The French Mistake-overrated, yes there are some funny parts but the whole thing plays like a giant inside joke. It was also completely pointless in the grand scheme of the season but then a lot of episodes have been for the past few years.
IATL-was really unexpected, its very well written, funny, action packed, relevant in the great scheme of the season. My favourite scene has got to be Sam smashing the phone up.
MTNB-only works for me paired with HCW, on its own its quite tedious.
For me Cas should have stayed the LeviaVessel at least then there would have been an actual tye between Winchester's and mytharc. He would have known all their tricks and how to attach them emotionaly and we could have seen the boys struggle with the descion to kill him at the end of the season but ultimately doing so. They could have tied that to Sam's hellucinations and Dean's emo and he could have killed Bobby. I personally think that would have made a better season.
I couldn't agree more with your post.
ReplyDeleteFor me too Cas should have been the Levia leader, right through season seven.
It would all have made for greater excitement and drama, given Cas' on-off relationship with the boys, and it would have been right up there and personal.
Crowley could have come back in with the brothers and helped them against the new powerful "god" and of course any escaped angels could have come over to their side too, adding extra fire-power against the usurper Cas.
It would have given Castiel a reason to be in the show, and it could have ended either with his death or his redemption, depending on what direction the writers decided to take the story-line.
I still can't understand why they didn't go with such a reasonable plot!
..THESE TWO POLLS VERY HARD CHOICE BECAUSE THEY WERE ..AWESOME
ReplyDeleteAll Hell Breaks Loose, Part 1 and It's a Terrible Life.
ReplyDeleteQuotes:
Bobby: "Correct me if I'm wrong but you willingly signed up to be the
angels' b**. I'm sorry. You prefer sucker? After everything you said
about them. Now you trust them." Dean: "Oh give me a little credit
Bobby. I've never trusted them less. I mean they come on like shady
politicians from planet Vulcan."
Dean: "Well I'll tell you one thing. At this point I hope he's with
Ruby." Bobby: "Why?" Dean: "Because killing her is the next big item
on my to-do list." Bobby: "I thought you were on call for angel
duty." Dean: "I am on call. In my car on my way to murder the b**."
French Mistake is the only funny ep in my top 10, loved the "You have a camel in your backyard", how the show makes fun of themselves with not many people watch the show. Sam needing to find out his wife's name, Misha tweeting, the very BAD acting..and I did not care that they had been on a movie set before, just an ep that made me grin and laugh a LOT.
ReplyDeleteMeet The New Boss is my pick, it had Death in a great scene with Dean and his pickle chips. Death telling Cas "I know God and you are no God", Lucifer talking to Sam, Sam not giving up on Cas and Cas telling Dean he is sorry and would fix Sam if he was strong enough. Cas letting the souls go, but the Levis holding on and the great Cas/Levi line "This is going to be so much fun".
I enjoyed It's A Terrible Life, even the Ghostfacers were not total turnoffs in this ep, but they came close. Just don't like those guys at all. The story was supposed to be how Sam and Dean were born to be hunters, but Sam was very happy when he was in school, so the story just did not ring true to me.
The French Mistake, although I'd be cool with either of the episodes winning. AHBL 1 is not as good as part 2, but then part 2 is one of the very best episodes ever, so many episodes look weaker in comparison with it. I chose The French Mistake, cause it's one of the best season 6 episodes and one of the best comedies of SPN (second only to BDaBR for me). Plus, it's really impressive how they managed to deal with this level of meta. Not many shows could manage such a challenge.
ReplyDeleteMeet the New Boss - it's a wonderful season premiere, made me very excited for season 7. And I don't even like It's a Terrible Life. So no brainer here.
Not that I don't like AHBL 1 as much as part 2, I just like The French Mistake more. Now part 2 would beat out French Mistake. On the second one, it was a difficult choice but I chose Meet the New Boss.

It would have been great. I was surprised when Castiel's vessel started deteriorating in the first minutes of Hello, Cruel World. I was so sure he was going to remain the Leviathan.
ReplyDeleteThough, I think if Cas had been the Leviathan the plot would have been about the brother's dilemma on whether they could save Cas, or whether the Leviathans had been telling the truth and he was really gone, in which case they would have to find a way to kill him.
ugh No way is French Mistake better than AHBL 1. FM doesn't hold up as funny as the first time, and 1 is a classic and paired with ABHL2, is about the best of SPN.
ReplyDeleteAHBL pt 1. While The French Mistake is a fun ride, it is NOT, IMO, a good episode. It's funny, but can't compare at all to AHBL pt.1 which was the first half of a pretty epic season finale of what I think is the best season of the show.
ReplyDeleteMeet The New Boss, though really I don't care. I have no real emotional response to either. Both are fine. MtNB wins for Impala-fixing and angsty-Dean.
I'm curious-do you think you would have liked It's a Terrible Life as much ha it come at a different time or in a different season?
ReplyDeleteI see im in the minority once again.
ReplyDeleteI chose AHBL 1 and It's a Terrible Life.
While the French Mistake is funny, for me it's not one of those episodes I find terribly important to the story arc for that season. It still makes me laugh, but really, it's more fun than anything. And AHBL 1 is a great episode. I could do without the whiny voice of Ava, but besides that it's a good one. I still cry when Sam dies.
While Meet the New Boss was okay, I didn't find it a strong episode for some reason. I'm not quiet sure why.
I still enjoy watching It's a Terrible Life. It's funny, entertaining, yet serious. Adding in the info about the ghostfacers makes me laugh the most.
In the first poll I voted for AHBL Part 1. I can't believe that The French Mistake is winning that poll. TFM had it's funny moments but AHBL Part 1 is in an entire different league than TFM in my opinion. To each their own. In the second poll both are pretty even to me so I don`t really care which one goes on. I decided to vote for It's a Terrible Life. I just love how they introduced Zachariah! He's one of those characters you just love to hate.
ReplyDeleteThat is odd since we usually approach Supernatural from different angles. I was surprised by how much I did enjoy The French Mistake mostly because I loathe The Monster at the End of This Book and The Real Ghostbusters. I expected it to be more in line with those two. Except for the truly terrible ending, I thought The French Mistake was great. As for Meet the New Boss, overall I liked it, left-wing political preaching aside. I didn't think Dean being furious with Cas was out of character so that part didn't bug me. I did expect Cas to be the big bad and that threw me when he turned out not being so.
ReplyDeleteNot sure what you are asking about the rewatch but I am currently on The End. I have all of season 7 quotes done IF, and that's a big IF, the data on my laptop can be saved. If not, I still have almost half the series to do. It is taking a long time - a much bigger project than I first imagined and I will be glad when it's done. If you are asking how many times I've rewatched Supernatural, I'm not sure. A lot. I watched season 1 over 25 times in the first hellatus alone and I literally wore out my DVD of Devil's Trap last summer.
I think I would have still really liked it but I wouldn't have found it as memorable. It would have been more of a routine SPN episode with a great twist. I certainly don't think it would have gotten to the 3rd round if it hadn't been placed where it was.
ReplyDeleteI love how when you really look at the episode there are tons of places when the brothers have the exact same body language. You could see them naturally in sync with each other, something missing from a lot of season 4.
ReplyDeleteI understand your pain. Lazarus Rising versus What is and What Should Be may just kill me. I already know which I'm voting for but I'm not sure I click the vote button against the other episode. Both should be in the final four.
ReplyDeleteI was shocked when they revealed Dick Roman as the big bad. I was sure it would be Cas and I was disappointed when it wasn't. I would have loved to see Cas as the Big Bad for that personal connection you mentioned and so they would have a concrete reason to bring him back into the story line. They missed a golden opportunity. I am though glad the Winchesters didn't have to kill Cas themselves. That would be emoangsty to an unbearable level.
ReplyDeleteKilling Ruby was the best thing they did in season 4. I was literally cheering when Dean said the second quote. I then followed the cheer with "It's about time."
ReplyDeleteI'm not surprised at all that The French Mistake won. I have it going all the way to the final four. To do so however, it's going to knock one of my favorite episodes out of the contest so I will be joining your unhappiness then.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I was a little disappointed in the Impala fixing for MtNB. It was no ELaC that's for sure. I was hoping we would see more of it in longer stretches than just brief seconds and minor things. Of course I was even more disappointed at the whimper of her coming back. She deserved a roar of an entrance a la Bloodlust.
ReplyDeleteI thought Zachariah's speech to Dean in IaTL was amazing and just what Dean needed to hear. It then surprised me how much I grew to hate him as the seasons progressed.
ReplyDeletemakes sense, and thanks for answering all my silly Q's. :)
ReplyDeleteWell of course, the Impala fixing in ELAC is perfect. But MTNB has Dean...in a jumpsuit...in a garage...in a Survivor tee...with tools...I don't know, it's still pretty sweet! :D
ReplyDeleteOh, yes, her reintroduction after the repair was PATHETIC! Kind of like her reintro in the finale! Sure, she looked SWEET sailing down the road to the tune of Born to be Wild, but goodness I wanted to see Jensen, clearly, driving her. argh. I got the Blu-ray of s7 today, and have listened to two of the three episode commentaries...Survival of the Fittest being the one I haven't listened too yet; I hope Sera or Bob have some explanations for why we don't get to see Dean behind the wheel!
Our wildly opposite reactions to TMATEOTB & TRG is why I always mentally note when we agree. :-)
ReplyDeleteCas presumably dying is the only thing that saved MTNB, imho. It wasn't that a Dean was angry that felt out of character. It wasn't even that he wouldn't *hear* what Cas was saying. It was the...'if you don't do what I say we're not friends anymore' foot stamping that felt wrong for Dean's character. Dean has always been loyal, quick to point out that when he disagrees, and, yes, willing to bully others into listening to him when he knows he's right...but way he handled he 'we're not friends anymore' aspect of their fight...just rang wrong for me.
I was asking the latter. 25 times for just season one!?!?!?! I am in awe. Or you need a life. Or both. LOL. I can easily get into those loops but, have so far, stopped myself. I stopped watching original Star Trek when I realized that I knew what ep was starting in under 10 seconds. Forced myself to stop watching Aliens when I caught myself saying *all* of the dialog. ( I'd watched it every night after work for a little over a week.) I figure when other people have to stop me it maybe be time for a little rest in a padded room.
