Supernatural - Ultimate Episode Round 6 - Polls
Sep 23, 2012
Polls SupernaturalWelcome new voters! We are glad to have you. Yesterday saw the biggest voter turnout of the tournament. 80+ more people voted than we've averaged for the rest of the polls and with those new votes came a very unpredictable turn of events. For the majority of the voting time the dramas were winning, but everything changed in the last 4 hours. We now have 3 comedies in the final four, giving comedy better odds at winning the overall prize than drama. Who knew? That means all bets are off for picking the winner.
Results were fairly close in all polls with Lazarus Rising winning by the biggest margin at 56.57%. Both Bad Day at Black Rock and The French Mistake won by a little over 51%. It's definitely at the point where every vote counts. Only two episodes can go to the finals. Will it be 2 comedies or will Lazarus Rising represent the drama side of Supernatural? The battle begins now. Happy voting!
Don't forget that we are also collecting quote nominations for The End. Having just rewatched this episode, I found it packed with great quotes. In fact, I had a hard time narrowing them down since I ended up with 2 pages. It constantly amazes me how I know that The End is in my top 5 episodes but every time I rewatch it, it still blows me away with its awesomeness. So sad it isn't in the contest today.
PS - For an episode all about the brother relationship, there are very few screencaps of both brothers together in Swan Song. I wanted to get the scene where Sammy takes over from Lucifer and reassures Dean but they are never in the same frame. Sorry folks. This is the best I could get that wasn't a flashback to a different episode.

We're almost done folks. Hard to believe but we're down to 4 episodes. While only one would likely have been in my personal final 4, all but French Mistake is in my top 20 episodes. Since I still enjoy French Mistake, it's all good for me. In the poll with Bad Day at Black Rock vs Changing Channels, I have no strong feelings either way. They flip flop on my best comedy list all the time. Currently Bad Day at Black Rock is setting slightly above on the list so it gets my vote. I love the quotes in that one and quite frankly I expect Changing Channels to win anyway. In the second poll it is Lazarus Rising all the way. That episode has everything in it. The pacing is phenomenal and the acting awesome. Plus we get arguably the best brother hug of them all, great Bobby moments, fabulous quotes, the amulet and Impala return, and arguably the best character entrance of them all. I love this episode. French Mistake still makes me laugh, especially the scenes in Jared's McMansion but it's lost some of its luster in rewatch.
ReplyDeleteWow. You're killing me with these choices. These 4 eps. are in my top ten list. After thinking for a while and letting my son help me make the choices, I went with BDABR and Lazarus. I'll be happy with whatever episode wins because my favorite is Mystery Spot and that didn't make it. Can't wait to see which one wins it all!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome that your son watches the show too. My family just shakes their head and laughs at my SPN obsession. Mystery Spot would have been high on my list too.
ReplyDeleteSince I don't like Changing Channels the first one was easy, Bad Day is my pick, the the second poll is cruel, since I love both eps...going with Lazarus Rising.
ReplyDeleteLazarus Rising:
ReplyDeleteFrom Dean crawling out of his grave to Cas making his first grand entrance, everything in this episode is perfect. IMO, Lazarus rising is the best season opener. Kim Manners directed this kickass episode written by the Kripke himself
Changing Channels:
Amazing flawless episode written by our new showrunner: Jeremy Carver.
If you don't vote for that one, you better ask Dr Sexy for a full checkup ... "Seriously?" ;-)
add:
ReplyDeleteReading Dahne intro, I so agree about the End: It should have been in this finale instead of "the french mistake".
It would also have been a perfect balance between drama and comedy in the four remaining ep.
I'm curious, which episode beat the End?
I'm a TVPhile so Changing Channels had to get my vote. Had to compare my %minutes loved between Lazurus Rising and French Mistake and French Mistake won.
ReplyDeleteChanging Channels
French Mistake
can't vote in the first one. i love both of those absolutely equally and don't care who wins.
ReplyDeletesecond was easy, the french mistake. as i said in yesterdays poll, i like lazarus rising, it's a great episode, but i can just never feel that love four it because of how the rest of season 4 turned out. and the french mistake just never gets old, i just love it.
funny how most of the episodes remaining are comedies isn't it
All Hell Breaks Loose 2. If we divide the bracket into 8 parts there are 3 parts that I think were very tough while the rest were fairly to really easy. The End was in one of the tough brackets.
ReplyDeleteWow, this is one for the books, I did not see this coming at all.
ReplyDeleteI am completely FLABBERGASTED that In My Time of Dying LOST to The French Mistake. Wow. TFM is not even close to the same caliber of episode as IMToD. Wow. :(
ReplyDeleteToday I voted Bad Day at Black Rock, and Lazarus Rising. Bad Day at Black Rock just because. I love both Changing Channels and Bad Day about the same amount, so alternating my vote seems only fair. Lazarus Rising DEFINITELY gets my vote over The French Mistake.
Me either. We have an influx of new voting blood that prefers comedies, which makes everything more exciting. It will make the final a surprise for sure,
ReplyDeleteDoes it make you feel better that it only lost by 11 votes? It was close. In fact it was winning for most of the day. Perhaps after the contest is done we will do a follow up post where people can pick what their results would have been if it were up to them.
ReplyDeleteI will avoid all things Dr Sexy or Dr. McDreamy or Dr. McSteamy or Ronald McDonalds thank you very much. :-P I honestly think BDaBR and CC are about equal but I'm glad that voting was easy for you today. Unless we get another topsy turvy day you should see Changing Channels in the finales tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteKind of. How much did What Is and What Should Never Be lose by? It's hard to see a favorite go by the way, especially to an episode I personally feel is FAR INFERIOR.
ReplyDeleteI do wish more people would write comments and explain their vote! It's so hard to understand what people choose and why when it's just a number. But yes, I do like that idea, post-poll.
WiaWSNB lost by 35 votes to Lazarus Rising. While that is my personal favorite, I am okay for it to lose to Lazarus Rising because I think that episode is one of SPN's best also. I also wish more people would comment but I'm grateful for those who do and so sorry that my hectic work schedule has kept me from responding as much as I would normally do. I thought this contest would be over well before school started again but the Favorite Episode contest lasted longer than I expected. I will try to adjust the tournament schedule next year to better fit.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I guess it would be easier to accept a loss when it's to another episode you think is also really great. I'm bummed the contest will be over so soon! Still have 11 days til the show premiere's...!
ReplyDeleteIt has to be hard to try and manage a poll around another poll, especially when it's not posted as regularly as yours are/were. I look forward to continuing the quotes nom's though! And no worries about comments, it's hard when you get busy to be as active. I'm finding that out, too.
Surprisingly easy for me. Changing Channels And Lazarus Rising. CC for Gabriel, sunglasses at night procedurals and Grey's Anatomy parody complete with compelling ghost story. :) Nice nod to JDM. Lazarus Rising because I was on the edge of my seat all summer and it was the best season premiere I have ever seen. From Dean digging his way out of the grave, to his reunion with Bobby and Sam, to Ruby 2.0's reveal to the introduction to Castiel and "Because he has work for you." Top notch storytelling all the way. I'm hoping season 8 debuts with even a premiere even close. Fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteI really hope Lazarus Rising wins. Castiel's introduction is easily one of the best moments in the entire series.
ReplyDeleteI did not see this coming, but I'm glad the episodes got paired up the way they did. It makes it fairly easy for me to vote.
ReplyDeleteThe results list is now updated through round 5. I think people will be surprised at where some episodes ranked. I know I am.
ReplyDeletehttp://dahne1.blogspot.com/2012/05/ultimate-supernatural-contest-results.html
It's a complete shocker to me too, especially since the votes were fairly typical for most of the voting time. I'm good with the line-up and actually with most of the episodes.
ReplyDeleteBad Day at Black Rock is the only episode that easily makes my top 10. Changing Channels and French Mistake are in the running, but most of the comedies don't make it in unless I haven't seen any for a while. I was kind of gobsmacked when AVSC and Mystery Spot dropped out.
ReplyDelete1. Changing Channels
ReplyDelete2. Lazarus Rising - I'm hoping this one wins it all.
My goodness! When I switched off yesterday, the results were a bit different.
ReplyDeleteAHBL P2 losing to CC is a sad surprise and I'm sorry that IMTOD didn't manage to beat TFM but that's how Democracy works. :)
However I'm glad that BDABR managed to oust SS and I'm okay with LR too, even although AVSC has a special place in my heart.:)
X
No problems this time though,Bad Day At Black Rock is comedic perfection and deserves its placing and Lazarus Rising is just as well-deserving. It's a shame that so many other great episodes have been eliminated. However!
For me not. A premiere like IMTOD losing to a meta episode. *Shakes head*
ReplyDeletethe first poll bad day..the second a tough one ,enjoy watching BOTH but i choose FRENCH
ReplyDeleteI don't get upset about these things, and I do love TFM, but IMTOD was my choice as well. I really think that episode is one of the top episodes of all time. It was just so perfect. Both Jensen and Jared were amazing as well as JDM, and Kim Manners' directing choices were spot on. For me personally, I think it's my number one favorite. Number two is probably Lazarus Rising and Number 3 is The End.
ReplyDeleteI still cannot believe yesterday's results. Who the hell are those comedy crazy new voters who came out of nowhere and turned everything around like that? I'm very sorry for AHBL 2 and IMToD. Both were definitely winning materials.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, today I voted Bad Day at Black Rock and Lazarus Rising.
BDaBR is by far my favourite comedy and remains funny no matter how many times I watch it. I love every single little piece of the episode, from the background music, through one-liners to the overall storyline. ChCh is a good one too, but sometimes it feels like they were trying too much to be funny. In BDaBR I find the comedy more natural and genuine.
Lazarus Rising is the last drama left in the contest and a great one too. At this point, I hope it wins the entire competition.
You have an excellent point. I seriously have no words for what's happened. Supernatural is great at doing comedy, but comedies are just a refreshment from what the core of this show really is. "Saving people, hunting things, the family business".
ReplyDeleteI would like the follow up. It could make another possibility for a great discussion.
ReplyDeleteThe ONLY thing I liked about CC was Sam as Baby and Trickster/Gab, Dr Sexy was just OK and the rest just not my kind of humor. After Ghostfacers it is my least watched ep.
ReplyDeleteWhy can't both polls run at the same time, I got really bored with the other one, way to far between polls. I love this one and it has kept me from pulling out all my hair and wearing out my DVDs. lol
ReplyDeleteI picked changing channels and Lazarus. Too easy almost...
ReplyDeletealso, on a side note, i just got the Season 7 dvd and the extras are awsome!!!
The first poll was difficult for me to choose only one, since both are great episodes. But in the end, no pun intended, I chose Bad day at black rock. It was an overall good episode. Not that I don't enjoy Changing channels.
ReplyDeleteI chose Lazarus rising. Its a great episode and the french mistake can't even compare. Its funny, but it as I see it, it was weak when it came to the story arc. Don't even know how it made it this far in the competition to be honest.
I'm very shocked as well. I wished I hadn't been so busy yesterday and was unable to vote. Not that one makes a huge difference. I dont even know how anyone could compare the french mistake to in my time of dying *sigh*
ReplyDeleteI agree. Why cant more than one poll be run at the same time? The other one bored me to tears since there were too many gaps, then I missed out on voting some days because I forgot about it after it disappeared for days on end.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to be the voice of dissent here and say that while I don't know where those people came from who upset the results yesterday, I'm glad things have been shaken up a little. These four don't match my picks of the top four episodes of Supernatural, but I didn't expect the final results would. I'm glad that Changing Channels beat AHBL2, and that the French Mistake beat IMTOD. I thought Changing Channels was a brilliantly funny, unique episode, whereas AHBL2 had its moments, but there were a lot of really weak spots. The beginning with Sam's death, Dean's soliloquy, and Dean's deal with the demon were great. It fell apart after that though. The Jake/YED part was dull. The graveyard part was poorly orchestrated with the group too easily letting Jake get the upper hand and let out the demons, with overplaying the something's wrong with Sam part, and cheesy special effects with the return of John.
ReplyDeleteWhile French Mistake isn't an episode I tend to rewatch, it was unique and gets points for pushing the limits of what's been done before. IMTOD was a nice, safe episode but that type of out-of-body epsiode has been done by so many shows before so many times (Charmed and Grey's Anatomy come to mind as two examples). The saving grace of that episode was the shocking turn of events with John making a deal and dying. I have similar criticism of WIAWSNB. While it is a nice, feel-good episode, the "how things could have been" set up is not original. The two episodes I would have loved to see make it to the final four that didn't were AVSC and Mystery Spot.
As for this poll, my first vote goes easily to Changing Channels. As I said before, I thought it was brilliant. Black Rock was funny, but I never thought it was special. I'm not a fan of that type of slapstick humor, so the appeal was lost on me. On the second one, I'll have to give it to Lazarus Rising because it was more memorable and emotional.
..AWESOME.....AND...AMEN...... FOR THIS REPLY...YESSS
ReplyDeleteIn first poll it was hard choose and end up voting for Bad Day at Black Rock. In second poll easy Lazarus Rising.
ReplyDeleteQuotes:
Dean: "Oh well, if it isn't the ghost of Christmas Screw You." Zachariah: "Enough. Dean, enough. You saw it, right? You saw what happens. You're
the only person who can prove the Devil wrong. Just say yes." Dean: "And how do I know that this whole thing isn't one of your tricks, huh? Some angel hocus-pocus?" Zachariah: "The time for tricks is over. Give yourself to Michael. Say yes, and we
can strike. Before Lucifer gets to Sam. Before billions die." Dean: "Nah." Zachariah: ""Nah"? You're telling me you haven't learned your lesson?" Dean: "Oh, I learned a lesson all right. Just not the one you wanted to teach."
Dean: "You're not fooling me, you know that. With this sympathy for
the devil crap. I know what you are." Lucifer: "What am I?" Dean:
"You're the same thing only bigger. The same brand of cockroach I've
been squashing my whole life. An ugly, evil, belly to the ground,
supernatural piece of crap. The only difference between them and you is
the size of your ego."
Ha! I think it is funny that you have the episodes rated by minutes.
ReplyDeleteThe "bad acting" scene made me laugh hysterically the first time but now it bugs me. I don't think people who raised in the art of the con pretty much would be that terrible. It was funny though. I never expected these to be the final four but it's kind of refreshing to know that this fandom can still surprise me.
ReplyDeleteI thinking about doing some mini-posts in the interim between the end of the contest and the beginning of season 8. Will depend on if I have time.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, running polls takes a lot more time than people think. To run the major SpoilerTV contest of the entire year takes a whole lot more. Sometimes real life gets in the way. There were more breaks this year than usual but I applaud Adam for working so hard to keep the contest going. After all, if he hadn't created and ran that first Best Show contest it is doubtful I would ever have come to SpoilerTV and my life would be so much poorer for it.
ReplyDeleteSpoilerTV and Andy have graciously allowed me to run these polls when a lot of other sites would not. I appreciate all they do. As such it is my choice to halt these polls during the main SpoilerTV contest. First off it keeps people from complaining as much that Supernatural has these types of polls in the first place. Second, there is sometimes the perception that having special events going for a show during the contest gives that show an unfair advantage. Mostly however, it's because the Best Show contest is the single biggest event at SpoilerTV. It generates buzz and brings in tons of new participants. It sometimes brings attention from TV stars and production people. In short it is a big deal and I believe that as such nothing else should take attention away from it, even something as relatively small as our tournaments.
ReplyDeleteThese SPN polls get around 250 people participating but the Best Show and Favorite Character contests get thousands of people a day. Therefore, it is harder to run and takes a lot more time prep time. Sometimes real life gets in the way. Everyone on the site is a volunteer so like it or not, the job that pays takes precedence. There were more gaps in the contest than normal but that's the way things work out. I look forward to the contests every year, especially Best Show, because they tend to unite the fandom and more importantly, they give us a chance to explain why we love SPN so much. We've had great results in getting new people to try it and winning over more people who would normally pass it by. I know of at least 2 people who gave Supernatural a shot this summer because of the contest. For me that's a great trade-off for a few days' break.
I also got here because of a poll and totally left the other forum I had been on. Don't get me wrong I was not faulting Adam, I know life can get in the way, was just asking why both can not be run at the same time. Then the long breaks on his would not be so bad. Between the two of you there could be one every day. In fact that might make it easier on both of you, every other day...maybe.
ReplyDeleteThink of it instead as getting more people involved in the Supernatural conversation on SpoilerTV. Voters become comment readers and comment readers become comment makers. We could use some new blood in our conversations and there's no better time to start than right before the new season begins.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. It's just a poll that means nothing in the grand scheme of thing. Far more important to get more people involved in the poll so hopefully they will stop by during the new season and share their insights.
ReplyDeleteI have decided to post the 149 episode order as part of the follow up. That should provide ample conversation starters. It's an interesting list that is ranked largely upon what episodes went up against each other.
ReplyDeleteHey, I did vote for Lazarus Rising today even if I didn't yesterday. I agree that it was a top notch season premiere and I'm excited to see what Carver does with his chance this season also.
ReplyDeleteThey had the misfortune of going up against other hugely popular episodes in the hardest bracket sections. For me they are top episodes too and I expected them both to be in the final four myself.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural is about a lot of different things to different people. That's what makes this show so rare and so entertaining and this fandom so divided. There's something to love for everyone but not everyone loves the same thing.
ReplyDeleteIn a contest like this it is in the nature to eliminate great episodes. A lot of it has to do with where they fall in the brackets. For instance, if Faith had been placed differently I have no doubt it would have gone farther. It just happened to draw a bad slot. My biggest shock yesterday is that AHBL2 didn't win, but it's all good because I really like Changing Channels too. Besides, I already know which episode wins my personal tournament.
ReplyDeleteI am excited to have "those comedy crazy voters" here. I may not always agree with the majority's choices, actually I rarely do. Still it is exciting to have new blood involved. For most of the contest I have been able to accurately predict over 90% of the votes. We started picking up new voters in round 4 and my predictions went south. I find that refreshing because when you always know what people are going to post or vote it can get a little stale. I'm hoping that these new voters turn into comment makers and that we get even better conversations as we begin season 8. I really hope everyone welcomes new people to our discussions. It can be intimidating to post that first comment, especially in a fandom that is as passionate as Supernatural. It's even more scary if people have been to other sites and been inadvertently exposed to a flame war in the process. I applaud new people who have the courage to stop lurking and start commenting and I really hope new voters will remain and become a part of our community.
ReplyDeleteI need to finish the quotes for Fallen Idols for tonight's final poll and then I get to break open my DVD's. They've been sitting here tempting me all week.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Not in your opinion of the episodes, but I too think it was a good thing to have new people vote. It made things more exciting and hopefully will result in us having a richer spectrum of opinions shared as season 8 begins. It keeps conversations from getting stale. I strongly urge all new voters here to stick with this site and become active participants in the conversation.
ReplyDeleteI would love to know how the brackets are picked, it is just throw everything in a hat and pick? There are always going to be good ones against each other, for me that is the fun. When it comes right down to it, which one do I love more. Usually I just go for the one I have watched the most and usually that means the one I cried most in. LOL
ReplyDeleteThat bottom quote was so awesome I find myself nodding and thinking, "You tell him Dean" every single time I watch it. I had no sympathy at all for Weepy Lucifer, no matter how much Kripke wanted me to see his perspective.
ReplyDeleteI am the one who made that decision. For me it feels disrespectful to the site to do anything, no matter how small (and I do realize this is a very tiny part of SpoilerTV as a whole) to distract from the attention of the main event. I would feel like a side band that was still playing when the main event took the stage. Side bands should exit stage left and let the main attraction get all the focus.
ReplyDeleteI can't speak for how Adam puts shows/characters in brackets for the main tournaments but for the Supernatural ones I use the nomination process and the NCAA bracket numbering system. I start by determining how many items will be in the contest. It's usually 64 but sometimes it can be 16, 32, or in this case 128. The numbers are specific because it means that every leg of the tournament is even and there are no buys. I then print off the seeded bracket for that number. It tells which ranking goes against which and is designed to keep the highest ranked episodes from meeting in the early rounds. That's why at the beginning the first episode listed was almost always the one that won. In our case Death's Door which entered the contest at #1 went against Adventures in Babysitting which entered the contest at #128.
ReplyDeleteTo determine how the episodes would be ranked, I created a spreadsheet with all the episodes and the percentage of votes they received during our nominating polls. I then sorted them from highest percentage to lowest. The top 101 episodes were numbered by wherever they stood in that list. The bottom 27 were a little different. When I ran a similar poll last summer some people complained that it wasn't fair to cut some episodes out if they went up against a better group of episodes in the nominating stage. Therefore I took all episodes that didn't make the top 101 and created a minitournament I called the wildcard polls. These episodes went head to head (again placed against each other by where they stood in the original percentage sort) and the winners advanced into the real tournament. We also had 3 episodes that made the last 3 spots by virtue of being the losers with the highest percentage of the votes. Not that any of the wildcard placings mattered since they were all defeated in the first rounds. In the end, putting them all in a hat would have been faster and probably have ended with similar frustration at episode placement. I may have to try that next time instead of this more scientific way.
Wow, color me impressed and in your spare time you saved the world. ;) My hat is off to you for the awesome job you do. And I understand why stand down for Adam's poll, may not like it, but I do understand.
ReplyDeleteChanging Channels
ReplyDeleteLazarus Rising
Yeah, not like this competition means anything besides talk and fun.
ReplyDeleteStill...it's tough cause I have a competitive side to me.
I'm sorry if I sounded a bit bitter in my post. New voters are always welcome! I didn't mean for the "comedy crazy voters" to sound like an assault. I just wish some of them would throw a comment to let us know why they are "comedy crazy", because assuming from the posts, the dramas should have won easily. Plus, I'm very protective over my favourite episodes, so I may be taking such situations a bit too personal :P talk about being a devoted fan ;) But of course every new SPN fan (or poster) is a part of the family.
ReplyDeleteIt's the step before the coin flipping website. :-D
ReplyDeleteBwah! You should write a book about making tough decisions. :-P
ReplyDeleteI understand. There are episodes I feel protective of too, almost like they are part of my family. I still go wonky eyed when people say they don't like Faith or that Devil's Trap wasn't a rush.
ReplyDeleteI also wish more people would comment so if there are any lurkers out there, please come join us. We would love to hear your voice too.
Ha! Some how I don't Poll Lady has the same ring as Superman or Captain America. However if it comes with a nifty cape, I'm all in. :-P
ReplyDeleteYou know how to pick them. Now which one do you pick between them?
ReplyDeleteA cape and I bet we can find some tights also. lol
ReplyDeleteEgads! I forgot about the tights. Nope sorry. That's a deal breaker. I guess I'll go back to my day job.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to vote, but the episodes I would have voted won. So yeah!
ReplyDeleteif you have time, that'd be awesome. As it is I'm gonna have to speed-watch seasons 5-7 in my "grand rewatch", to get them done before season 8 starts!
ReplyDeleteyeah, IMToD is my fav, so I was heart-broken. I think I put more stock in these polls than need be. :) Still, for it to lose to The French Mistake is pretty insane!
ReplyDeleteYes. Totally agree. They are not even the same caliber! I hate when my favorite's lose...lol. I'm a sore loser. ;)
ReplyDeleteNot only with the brackets but with many other variables too!
ReplyDeleteI'm quite sure that if you re-started the whole tournament tomorrow we would get a different coupling in the finale..
That's why it's always nice to repeat these things, as the result is truly unpredictable, and so keeps the whole contest fresh. :)
I don't mind which one wins now; I'm just happy that those episodes I heartily dislike didn't get to the finale.
Yep. My family of 4, plus my mom and dad watch the show. My daughter, son and I are the obsessed ones.
ReplyDeleteOK, that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for your hard work on the polls. I can't imagine how much work it is to be honest.
ReplyDeleteI am so jealous. I tried to get my family into my SPN addiction but no dice. It has to be great to have other people to talk to about Supernatural and know they know what you are talking about.
ReplyDeleteMy 50 year old son drives a big rig and I got him hooked by letting him take my DVDs on the road with him. It was fun talking to him about what ep he was watching and his thoughts. He has always been a Chevy fan, so he loves Baby. lol
ReplyDelete
