Supernatural - Ultimate Episode Round 3E - Polls

Sep 16, 2012

Another day of our tournament completed and we are half way through round 3. The previous polls saw both All Hell Breaks Loose, Part 2 and The End make it comfortably into the fourth round. We now say goodbye to Dark Side of the Moon and the Pilot. Choices are getting harder as we progress. As we move on to the second half of the round, it's a flash back, a time travel, a finale, and a character study episode going head to head. I'm pretty sure one will be a blow out but the other poll is tougher to pick. Depends on who shows up to vote so pass the word and happy voting! Today's quotes nominations are from Jump the Shark, an all-around terrible episode that doesn't even have many great quotes to save it. Oh well. There's only 3 more season 4 episodes left in our quote hunt after this one. By the way, I chose the pilot picture today because it was the first time the brothers did anything in tandem and a great sign of the amazing brother connection that would be the foundation of the series. However, I pulled it out of my picture archive so I'm not sure where the screen cap came from. If it's yours, let me know so I can credit you.

  1. Again these are easy choices for me even though this time I enjoy all of the episodes. For the first poll it is A Very SPN Christmas for me. This episode is in my top 10 and even though I think there are a handful of episodes better than it, this is still the episode I tell people to watch if they are only willing to give SPN a one episode trial. It perfectly encapsulates all of Supernatural in 42 minutes. It starts with the wonderful brother relationship built with both the flash backs and the current Christmas. It has the utter gore of some episodes, but it is balanced by the funniest villains ever to grace Supernatural. (Yes, I think they are funnier than the Trickster himself but not funnier than the chaos the Trickster causes.) I adore the fact that Mayor Abbott from Everwood played a pagan goddess in this episode. Perfect casting! Everything about this episode is quintessential Supernatural and it remains a shining example of just how good this show can be.

I love Time After Time too. Another example of great guest stars who aren't just stunt casting. I adored the idea that Eliot Ness was a hunter and the history minor in me liked playing in the 1940's for a spell. However, it was Sheriff Jody who really sold this episode for me on the guest star level. The scenes were she leans toward mothering Sam were heartwarming and I hope we can see this relationship grow in season 8. It would be nice to think that Sam kept in contact with her while living his normal life. I also thought Ezra was a lot of fun and she reminded me of a much smarter, more interesting, slightly less booze-houndy Gert from Red Sky at Morning. I bet she and Ness have some bawdy conversation from time to time. Time After Time was a great episode and it has come far in this competition but still it's not in the same category as A Very SPN Christmas.

I just rewatched Lucifer Rising and it's a Supernatural finale so of course it is good and has action. The pacing moved decently and for coming off of one of the single most depressing episodes in all of SPN history, it was somewhat light on overemoting. For season 4 it was actually a relief and definitely one of the better end of season 4 episodes. However there are still specific scenes that I absolutely hate in this episode and that is rare for me. There are definitely plots/episodes/characters I hate and types of scenes that make me roll my eyes, but I generally I don't hate a scene so much that it colors the rest of the episode for me. Sadly this is one such episode, as are Reading is Fundamental and Frontierland. I did absolutely relish finally killing Ruby and that raises this episode a whole bunch. I also loved the previously sequence and the Lilith twist. Cas blasting Zachariah away was another high point. All in all, I mostly like this episode but it's nowhere near an ultimate episode to me.

Weekend at Bobby's was a gem in season 6 and since I liked that season a whole lot more than most people, that is saying something. Generally I'm not too fond of the brothers being sidelined in Supernatural but this was a great one-off event that let us see more about the behind-the-scenes of hunting life and of course Bobby. I found it fascinating and heartbreaking at the same time. He never even got to eat the cobbler. Highlights of course include Rufus who was one of the best recurring characters we had. Bobby and he together made me laugh until I was gasping. The woodchipper was inspired and we got Sheriff Jody back as a bonus. Not to mention…CROWLEY! The scene where Bobby wants his soul back was priceless. One of my most favorite funny scenes in the whole show. Actually every scene with Bobby and Crowley in this episode was perfect. I do not expect this episode to win today, but oh it should.

  2. A Very Supernatural Christmas and Lucifer Rising.

Lucifer Rising ended S4 with the same perfection it started. If it were against Death's Door it would a completely different thing.

Time After Time was perfect but A Very Supernatural Christmas had a lot of great brotherly moments.

  3. Mmmm I voted for the losing ones Time After Time and Weekend At Bobby's. While I loved AVSC flashbacks and brother moments wasn't crazy about the MOTW.

    ReplyDelete
  4. This one was easy, A Very Supernatural Christmas and Lucifer Rising. Love the flashbacks with young Sam & Dean, both of these actors are my favorite young ones. Dean's amulet and what their young life was like. The Pagan Gods were a lot of fun, well not to Sam and Dean. lol

Lucifer Rising finally got Ruby DEAD and that would make this ep a winner, but we had Cas finally helping Dean and got to see Zachariah for the dick he really is and watch Cas send him somewhere..Weekend at Bobby's was fun and I thought Jensen did a great job directing it, felt sorry for Bobby and his cobbler. Crowely was fun as usual.

  5. Don't get me wrong, I loved Time After Time, but A Very SPN Christmas is a classic to me. Lucifer Rising wasn't a bad episode, but Weekend at Bobby's was wonderful. It showed more about Bobby than we have seen. I loved how he finally outfoxed Crowley. I love that he actually could get upset with Sam and Dean. I loved the wood chopper and his interaction with Jody Mills and Rufus Turner. It was a great slice of his life. and it was Jensen's directorial debut and an awesome one it was.

    Jump the Shark Quotes:

    1. Dean: You know I finally get why you and Dad butted heads so much. You two are practically the same person. I mean I worshipped the guy, Y'know. I dressed like him, I acted like him, I listened to the same music. But you are more like him than I will ever be. I see that now.
Sam: I'll take that as a compliment.
Dean: You can take it any way you want.

    2. Adam: Okay, so basically you're saying that every movie monster, every nightmare that I've ever had, that's all real.
Dean: Godzilla is just a movie.

  6. SPN Christmas and Lucifer Rising.

SPN Christmas is a brilliant episode, and in my Top 5. Not much will ever make me not vote for it. It's fun, funny, emotional, poignant, touching, angsty, EVERYTHING! I adore this episode and if I thought my family would appreciate (or understand) its humor, I'd make them all watch it every Christmas! Time After Time is fun, but it has absolutely ZERO impact on any of the mytharc. It's one of the most stand-alone episodes there is! Super fun and a good episode overall, but seriously it cannot hold a candle to SPN Christmas. If it wins, I might seriously have to reconsider remaining in fandom! ;)

Lucifer Rising...I only voted for it over Weekend at Bobby's because of the importance in the mytharc. I was surprised to learn that Zach was working to START the Apocalypse, and seeing Dean desperate to go after Sam, even as mad as he is at him...very touching. I just HATE Ruby's total manipulation of poor Sam in this one. But, still...while I enjoyed Weekend at Bobby's, it's mostly stand-alone and just doesn't have the power behind it that Lucifer Rising does.

I finally caught up to this episode on the Quotes! I missed a few, voting wise, but I'm all set to watch Jump the Shark here in a few. Poor Adam. :(

  7. What's the scene in Lucifer Rising that you hate? I was so glad Ruby was killed, but goodness, Genevieve did a great job of making me hate the character Ruby. Props to her for sure for that. I love to hate Zach...I was sad when he was offed in season 5.

I cannot agree more about Time After Time. It's a super fun, well done episode but goodness it's nowhere near the same caliber as SPN Christmas. Not at all. I'm only partly joking when I say if it wins I may seriously reconsider staying in fandom!

  8. Again today all great episodes so I don't Mind who wins. Voted weekend at bobbys and a very supernatural christmas

  9. I have a friend that is a fan and she hates A Very Supernatural Christmas and she can not tell me why, just does not like it. I DO have weird friends. lol

  10. really?? :( wow. Christmas is the one SPN episode that I simply cannot fathom someone not liking.

  11. Ugh! This episode is one of the worst.
    Jump the Shark Quotes:

    15. Sam: "Being a hunter isn't a job Adam. It's life. You're pre-med, you've got a girlfriend, friends? Not anymore you don't. If you're really going to do this, you can't have those kinds of connections. Ever. They're weaknesses. You'll just put those people in danger. Get them killed. That's the price we pay. You cut 'em out and you don't look back. There's only one thing you can count on. Family." 14. Dean: "What the hell was that?" Sam: "What?" Dean: "Hunting is life. You can't have connections. Dad gave you that exact same speech remember? It was just before you ditched us for Stanford. Now you hated dad for saying that stuff and now you're quoting him?" Sam: "Yeah well it turns out dad was right." Dean: "Since when." Sam: "Since always."13. Adam: "Our father was a monster. Why? Because of what he ate. He never hurt anyone Sam. Living anyway." Kate: "No he was no monster, but the thing that killed him was. A monster named John Winchester."12. Sam: "You're monsters." Adam: "You know you use that word a lot Sam but I don't think you know what it means."11. Dean: "Okay? That's it." Adam: "What am I supposed to say?" Dean: "That we're liars. That we're crazy. Nobody just says okay."10. Dean: "No, Adam's in a better place….You know I finally get why you and dad butted heads so much. You two are practically the same person. I mean I worshipped the guy. You know I…I…I dressed like him. I acted like him. I listened to the same music, but you are more like him than I will ever be and I see that now." Sam: "I take that as a compliment." Dean: "You can take it anyway you want."9. Sam: "Dean I'm telling you the kid checks out." Dean: "Great so he's an actual person on the planet Earth. Sucks he's got a demon in him."8. Dean: "I think it's too late for us. This is our life. This is who we are okay, and it's fine. I accept that, but with Adam. He's still got a chance man. He can go to school. He could be a doctor." Sam: "What makes Adam so special?" Dean: "What? Are you jealous of the kid?" Sam: "Are you?"7. Adam: "Sam, how did dad really die?" Sam: "Demon." Adam: "You hunted it down? Got revenge?" Sam: "Dean killed it." Adam: "So it's over for you." Sam: "It's never over."6. Dean: "Oh, why didn't I throw paper?"5. Dean: "Yep. Once he gets the Jesus juice, this evil b** is going to be in a world of hurt." Sam: "And what if he's not possessed?" Dean: "Then he is a shape shifter." Sam: "Hence the silver." Dean: "Look either way this thing is going to bleed. I mean using dad as bait. That's the last mistake of its short, pitiful life. What? What?"4. Dean: "Well now I'm thinking about dad sex. Stop talking." Sam: "Maybe he slipped one past the goalie." Dean: "Dude. 3. Adam: "Okay so basically you are saying that every movie monster, every nightmare that I've ever had that's all real." Dean: "Godzilla's just a movie." 2. Funeral Guy: "Tell me Agent Nugent. Have you thought about where you might like to spend eternity?" Dean: "All the damn time. "1. Waitress: "Hi. Welcome to Cousin Oliver's."

  12. What is and What Should Never Be had zero impact on the mytharc either but it's still the best episode in my opinion. I don't think an episode necessarily has to be tied to the mytharc to make it excellent. In fact some of my favorites like Faith are standalones but they stand out anyway. Time After Time didn't get my vote either but not because it lacks mytharc heft. I don't find A Very SPN Christmas to be that tied into the mytharc either - it's more an origin story than a game changer in the fight against demons and hell. For me A Very SPN Christmas is partly superior because it combined all the elements of SPN better and more smoothly. Mostly though it is superior because the entire episode is grounded in the brothers' relationship instead of the case and it showed us additional facets of that relationship in a moving but not overly sappy way, um usually. When I finished watching Time After Time, I felt entertained and happy with how well the gimmick worked. I liked most of the scenes and adored the others. When I finished watching A Very Supernatural Christmas, I felt like I knew the brothers on a deeper level and I had that same contented feeling I get spending Christmas with my own family. I was thoroughly entertained in every scene but also so engrossed in the episode that I felt I was part of the Winchester family instead of just in the audience.

  13. I dont like that episode either and I have no idea why...

    ReplyDelete
  14. I guess I'm in the small minority who doesn't like AVSC. I have no idea why I don't like this episode, but I'm not really a fan of it. Sure there are hilarious parts and touching parts, but for some reason I cant like it no matter how many times I watch it....including just a few days ago. So naturally my vote goes to Time after Time. I didn't just choose it because I didn't like AVSC, because I did enjoy the episode. I just wish there could have been more Sam... and more Jason Dohring *wink*

The second poll was slightly more difficult, since I do enjoy both episodes. But for me it will almost always be Weekend at Bobby's. Not to say Lucifer Rising isn't a great episode, because it is. I just have a soft spot for Bobby and the episode finally shined a light on the life he has when he's not jumping to the aid of the Winchesters. I also love any time Bobby and Crowley meet. Never disappoints.

  15. you make a good point about the stand alone episodes. I don't necessarily think that being stand-alone automatically makes an episode lesser (I mean, Faith is among my absolute favorites, as is What Is...), but in this case I feel like Time After Time, while fun, doesn't do anything to further any relationships (except Jody and Sam, but if that's not taken advantage of in season 8 then there's really no point in pointing that out at all), or story, hence my statement about it being stand-alone.

The Christmas episode certainly was like a big hug from the show. I know what you mean about feeling like a part of the family, not just an audience member, afterwards. Such a great episode man. I love it so much.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I voted for A Very SPN Xmas. I don't really love any of the second poll but I voted for Lucifer Rising just because Ruby dies haha

    ReplyDelete
  17. just finished watching it. I don't think it's terrible, but there's not too much quotable! I wondered though - do you think Dabb and Loflin are just bad writers, or do you think they just have rotten luck? They always seem to be the writers of the worst episodes but I wonder if it's because they are just bad writers, or if they just always come up in rotation when it's an inherently bad episode. Thoughts on that?

  18. A Very Supernatural Christmas, or Time after Time? I do like A Very Supernatural Christmas, but I also liked Time after Time, I liked Chronos, I liked seeing Sheriff Jody [And hope she returns for season 8] I liked seeing Dean hunt with Eliot Ness, and that Eliot Ness was a hunter. A Very Supernatural Christmas had great brotherly moments, like in most episodes I loved the ending scene, with Sam and Dean's little Christmas in a motel and plus the two gods were funny. To top it all off, we had some touching flashbacks [how Dean got his amulet]. I'm sure most will be voting for A Very Supernatural Christmas, so I don't feel bad for voting for Time after Time. I like both episodes, so I'll give by vote to the one [I believe] that needs more help.
As for the second poll, that ones harder. Weekend at Bobby's was great. Rufus was always a joy to see, and an insight of Bobby's life was much appreciated. I'm not sure, but I think that's the first episode in which we hear of Gath. [And I'm sure it was the same Gath, because when Bobby told him to call the feds, he called Bobby on his FBI line] It gave me a different perspective, how Bobby truly was taken for granted, when he does Everything for the boys. I laughed every time Bobby tried to rest, sit, or eat his cobbler, and couldn't! And Crowely made an appearance! I liked all the scenes with him, such as when he sees his son.
And yet.... Lucifer Rising was the season finale, and it was a good one. That's one of my favorite cliffhangers, the scene fading to white as Lucifer rising. Awesome. I loved the Castiel and Dean moments, and Dean rushing to stop Sam, and Castiel staying behind to fight off an archangel! I was glad Ruby was finally killed, and liked the Lilith being to final seal twist. My vote is going to have to go to the finale.

  19. Picked A Very Supernatural Christmas and Weekend at Bobby's

I almost picked Time after Time than changed my mind though more for emotional attachment than any critical reason.

Weekend at Bobbys was a massivly simple choice.

  20. A Very Supernatural Christmas and Weekend at Bobby's

  21. I agree, it is in my top 5 ep, it was on TNT recently and I made sure to tell her it was on, just in case. lol

    ReplyDelete
  22. My love for the show as a whole and the reason they can get me crying with a little tear in Sam or Dean's eyes is they feel like family to me. Never have I felt this way about a show and the characters. In my case never is a very long time, I remember when TV got started. LOL There have been other series I love, Veronica Mars, Roswell, Buffy, Firefly, but never like family.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I just want someone to tell me what is not to like, instead of I just don't like it, which is what I get from my friend also.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I was sorry to see the Pilot losing yesterday but it lost to a worthy episode. There always has to be a winner and a loser, unfortunately. :(

No indecision in today's first poll.
AVSC is right up at the Zenith along with Mystery Spot, Bad Day At Black Rock and a few others.
The "gods" were marvellous, as were the flash-backs; everything was just spot-on. Terrific episode.
    X
    The second poll is tougher.
Lucifer Rising has the so sad moment when Sam receives the false massage from Dean.
Poor Sam had obviously not been one hundred percent convinced of going along with Ruby and I'm sure that if Dean's true words had reached him, he might have reconsidered.
The good scene was the killing of Ruby by Dean with Sam's co-operation, but it's definitely not one of my favourite episodes.

Week-end at Bobby's was very interesting in its own way, and I love Rufus and Crowley.
Then I am determined to give Season Six as much love as possible, so I vote for WAB

    ReplyDelete
  25. I remember when I first watched this episode. I was really thrown by the discovery of John having another son. I was possibly as unwilling to believe as Dean was.
Then just when I had sort of begun to accept the fact, we get a slap in the face by finding out that the real Adam is already dead. What a dud episode!

I see that it doesn't even have any particularly great quotes either. Not an episode for the history books in my opinion.

  27. A Very Supernatural Christmas - the MotW storyline is fun, but nothing special, however this episode gets a lot of extra points for the flashbacks and giving us the amulet's backstory. Time After Time is fun as well, but not very memorable.

Lucifer Rising - I'm among those few ones who don't like Weekend at Bobby's at all. For me the episode is slow and boring. I love Bobby, but without a big storyline in the background (like in Death's Door) a Bobby-centric episode is just a bad idea. Lucifer Rising might be all talking and poor in action, but the interactions between the characters are what I love (i.e. the Dean and the angels parts of the episode). I love Dean's confrontation with Cas and the way it made Cas rebel. Also love the ending and the boys reaching for each other when they realize Lucifer is coming. It made me excited for Lucifer as well (he never lived up to those expectations). And Dean killed Ruby, which was awesome, as well as the reveal about Lilith being the last seal. I really love this episode.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ahh! I wanted to vote for Time After Time because I loved it, and Nick Lea was perfect as Ness.. but it's impossible to vote against the Xmas episode! It's a classic.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Bobby's "boo hoo princess" speech was the one I most hated. Mostly because I have experience dealing with addicts and so many people have the same attitude. You're never allowed to hold the addict responsible, you're always required to be patient with them because they don't know what they are doing, and you are always, always expected to bail them out no matter what and give them a second chance no matter what it costs you. To do otherwise is to be a jerk and unsympathetic and somehow worse than the addict. It's frustrating and tiresome and sometimes you have to be able to vent or think of yourself first. It's self-preservation so that whole "boo hoo princess" attitude made me want to slap Bobby not Dean.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Sometimes I think we are on the same wavelength when we watch these episodes. That's everything I loved about WaB too. And the same quotes.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I certainly hope they explore Sam's relationship with sheriff Jody. In fact I hope he turns to her when Dean goes missing and that they stay in touch unlike Dean and Bobby during Sam's missing year. There's a lot of potential in watching Sam in a somewhat mothering relationship and I think it would be very good character development.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I have never felt as much a part of a show either even when I was obsessed with others. I think that may have something to do with the fandom as well as the show.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think I'm going to be saying that a lot as things progress. There are very few episodes I dislike left in the contest. Actually very few that I think were less than great.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I would be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt if they had only written 1 or 2 episodes but they've written 15. At that point I have to think it's them.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I thought Time After Time did a great job of balancing the Dean and Sam time equally. In fact, for me it was one of the most balanced episodes where the brothers are split since Free to Be You and Me.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Maybe I need to rewatch it... it's been so long. Too bad I can't afford the new season until next week.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I don't know why I don't like it, I just don't. I would tell you if I knew why. But I guess I can't hate it, because I do rewatch it. Unlike Bugs, I very rarely ever watch that one.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I am one of the few people that liked Bugs, but everyone already knows I am weird. lol

    ReplyDelete
  39. I liked parts of it, but I have a fear of Bugs so...

  40. You would have fun at my house, I picked up an egg case once and laid it on my dresser, forgot about it, came home from work and had hundreds of the cutest baby praying mantis in my bedroom. lol

    ReplyDelete
  41. Let me know what you think on the rewatch. I picked up the DVD today (last one available in the area) but have to wait until I get paid to get the Blu-Ray.

  42. Interesting. Personally, I love that speech, but I have never thought about it from the point of view you present here. Hmmmm...this will put a new spin on it next time I watch!

    ReplyDelete
  43. agreed. I fear it's something we'll never see, but it'd be great. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

  44. I waffle back and forth. When they're good, they're really good...but when they're bad, there's Time for a Wedding. With a (terrible) high concept episode like that...would any writer(s) have done any better with it? (somewhat rhetorical Q)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Ewwwww I have a fear of those, although I have no clue why. Bugs in general, but praying mantises and spiders are the worst.
