Supernatural - Ultimate Episode Round 3C - Polls

14 Sept 2012

The last polls were blowouts with Mystery Spot and Swan Song definitely overtaking Devil's Trap and Abandon All Hope respectively. I think today's polls will be closer. Changing Channels and Jus in Bello are almost universally loved in the SPN fandom. I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Monster at the End of This Book will battle it out for longest title still left in the contest. (Well there's Wi&WSNB too I guess.) Should be a good set of polls. Don't forget to nominate your favorite quotes from It's a Terrible Life, one of my personal season 4 favorites.

  1. Again a most difficult choice for me. Changing Channels is one of my favorite comedies and I never saw the Gabriel twist coming. It's poking fun of Supernatural's previous competitors was brilliant. Jus in Bello is one of the best mytharcs. Well paced and great all the way through until the ending scene. It gave us for the briefest of moments Hendrickson, the hunter, who I would have loved to see for longer. I thought Nancy was great and she gets credited for one of the best lines of the whole series. Nancy: "When this is over, I'm going to have so much sex…but not with you." In fact both episodes are full of snarky one-liners that I love. This is a coin flipper vote for me as again I like both episodes a whole lot better than anything in the other poll. Gut feeling - hmmm, Jus in Bello.

I'm not particularly found of either of the episodes in the second one so points system it is. IKWYDLS - gets points for Anna. TMatEotB loses points for Chuck. IKWYDLS - loses points for being the first episode of the utter downfall of season 4. TMatEotB loses far more points for making the idea of Wincest fanfiction canon on the show. Yeah, that's as far as we need to go. My vote - I Know What You Did Last Summer.

  2. Can't vote in the first poll.

  3. Jus In Bello (already said how I felt about the Trickster/Gabriel revelation in CC)

And I Know What You Did Last Summer. I loved the Sam flashbacks, and Anna was great in that episode (that changed pretty quickly after that). And besides, pretty much anything beats the "Winchester Gospel" nonsense.

So last time we had a comedy filled episode vs. a very serious episode I went with the serious (No rest for the Wicked over A Bad Day at Black Rock), and this time I went with the more comedic episode. So I picked Changing Channels for the first poll, and on the second one I picked The Monster at the End of this Book.

These polls are getting so much harder!!! I want to vote for them all! =]

    ReplyDelete
  5. You know, I wouldn't vote for the introduction to Chuck (and thus Becky). I wish there was a none of the above button to click for that second poll. I went with IKWYDLS as well, lesser of the two evils, I suppose. Love that you used the AAH photo, BTW. I sniffled as soon as the page loaded.

    ReplyDelete
  6. First poll is too hard to vote, so I wont but the second, I'll go with TMatEotB...

  7. Changing Channels, and The Monster at the End of This Book.

Jus in Bello is great, but I hate the end and the way Ruby lays into Dean, just because he wouldn't let her slaughter the "virgin". I agreed with Dean, and hated that Sam balked at his decision a little bit. Changing Channels though, is great.

Monster is probably my favorite meta-episode, because it's not "in your face" like French Mistake, and it doesn't suck like Wedding. I tolerated Becky here, and I love Chuck (or rather, love Rob Benedict as Chuck). Just a fun, funny episode that has some good Winchester brother moments, like the laundry scene. Not only do we seem them doing laundry, but the dialogue...hahah! One of my Top 20, for sure.

  8. I do like Jus In Bello, but I love Changing Channels, it was very funny, I always love seeing the Trickster, and learning he was Gabriel? Awesome!
The second one is alot closer, I love IKWYDLS, and I don't hate Anna for what she did. Unlike Castiel, who would sacrifice anyone to save Dean and Sam, Anna prefered to save earth's entire population. She believed in the good of the many, over that of the few. But The Monster at the End of This Book was also great. I love Chuck, and I really enjoyed that friendship scene between Dean and Cas. And the scene at the laundromat with Sam reading from the book? Oh, tough choice! I'm going to have to go with IKWYDLS.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I am going against the flow tonight, was not a big fan of Changing Channels other than Gabriel, and I can't stand that idiot on CSI, so going with Jus in Bello

The second two are both favorites, but since I am a huge Anna fan I have to go with I Know What You Did Last Summer. I love Monster and Chuck, it was full of great quotes and I love them making fun of the Wincest fanfic. This is one thing this series does so well, makes fun of its self and weird fans. lol

  10. This is too hard!! Putting two of my favourite episodes against each other! I cannot decide between changing channels and jus in bello, I love them both! I voted with jus in belo because it is losing right now.

For the other poll I voted monster at the end of this book. I like this episode and was never such a huge fan of I know what you did last summer

    ReplyDelete
  11. 1. Changing Channels - like I've said before, this is either my favorite comedy or close to it.

Jus In Bello was really good too but I just had to vote CC.

    2. Monster At The End Of This Book- the only meta episode I could truly enjoy. Though not perfect, I like it more than I Know What You Did This Summer.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I voted for Jus In Bello and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Changing Channels and The Monster At The End Of This Book are fun to watch but that's about it. I guess I prefer more serious episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I loved Changing Channels , but just plain like Jus In Bello more. My only regret with that ep was that they killed off the FBI dude. I really wanted to see him as a hunter. I get why they killed them off and, in terms of the overall story, I can't argue, but I really wanted to see him as a hunter.

And I love Monster at the End of the Book. Just plain freaking loved it. I know a lot of fans hate Chuck with a fiery passion, but I loved him. And I am still trying to jiggle my psychic powers to get them to make some of the fake novel cover art available. Those were really nice.

So, Jus In Bello and Monster at the End of the Book

    ReplyDelete
  14. I would definitely have voted for none of the above too but what would we do if "none of the above" won a poll? Would whatever it went up against next automatically win? I love that AAH photo too. I was searching through screencaps with a squirming baby in my arms when I had the same reaction Dean did in Provenance with the "duh" moment in the mausoleum. You already posted the perfect picture.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I found it particularly painful also.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Amen to that. It was one of those bizarre twists that did NOT work at all. Pretty odd since suicidal teddy bear, homicidal Lincoln, and French Mistake really did work for me and they were by far more bizarre.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I just know that round 4 is going to find me having to choose between my top 20 episodes. It will be like picking one child over another.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I never liked Ruby for her ninja tree girl entrance but Jus in Bello is the worst Ruby episode for me before the whole end of season 4 drek. I hated that both brothers felt so defeated when they ended up making the right decision. I also had a problem with Sam even considering killing Nancy. It shocked me more than Lilith did and not in a good way. It did however give us preview of what was to come. Just as an aside, Becky is not in TMatEoTB. I however blame Chuck for introducing Becky and this episode introduced him.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I also don't blame Anna for the decision she made. It was the most logical and angels seem to be less likely to go by emotion. I don't like much about TMatEoTB but I did think the laundromat scene had soem good one-liners. I love how you can see Sam get visibly annoyed when Dean reads everything Sam is about to do. That would annoy me too. Plus "brooding shoulders" was a classic line.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I can't stand David Caruso either but my reaction was different to it. I laughed the whole time as I was agreeing with certain lines they said. For me it was funnier than the Dr. Sexy segment because I have never seen Grey's Anatomy so I didn't catch until much later some of the parody in it.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Changing Channels and Jus in Bello are in my top episodes list too. My opinion of which one is better depends on my mood that day.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Many would agree with you about Changing Channels. It won our favorite comedy episode tournament in January this year.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Only difference is, the Winchester Gospel was meant to be taken seriously. When Castiel reveals it in the episode I wasn't sure what my reaction what supposed to be. I wonder who in the writing staff came up with this ridiculous idea.
It's funny because I actually really like Chuck, but hate half the episodes he was in. Don't even get me started on The Real Ghostbusters...

    ReplyDelete
  24. haha! Oops. I don't think I've ever done that before. Shows you how much Becky gets associated with Chuck, even for me. :-\
But then, that means Monster is even better! Because there's none of her!
Yeah, I was surprised, like Dean, that Sam didn't immediately decry Ruby's suggestion. Ugh. Foreshadowing indeed. I finally resumed my episode rewatch, and am in the middle of Sex and Violence now, and I'm dreading the coming storm, lol. Even though the drama is good and the guys are wonderful, it's so hard to watch! Sam and Dean aren't the same after this...and it's not until mid to late season 5 that they even trust or are "honest" with each other anymore... *sigh* Angst ahead!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I have 28 more minutes of season 4 to transcribe in the rewatch and then it gets tabled for an entire year. My sanity has a better chance at sustaining that way. Not sure why season 4 has been particularly bad this go around since I have seen it multiple times even though it is my least favorite. I think maybe those other times I watched but also concentrated on other things and this time I have gone in excruciating detail. Either way, season 5 which I tend to dislike in the rewatch also, is going to feel like a breath of fresh air at times.

    ReplyDelete
  26. My reaction was heavy sustained eye rolling which I am sure was not the intended reaction. I guess I always took it as a joke since it was in an episode that was a complete joke to me anyway. I think I had the same reaction to TRG as you did.

    ReplyDelete
  27. lol - and I've always liked season 4. Must be my mood lately that I'm dreading it so much this time. Season 5 will be better I think, maybe, (except for SWAP MEAT. UGH!), as there's Changing Channels to look forward too! But I have to get through s4 first, and good luck to you finishing it off, too!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I know. I voted in that.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I loved the knight rider one and the CSI one because it's making fun of the CSI show. XD

    ReplyDelete
  30. I could only stomach the first half of the first season of Grey's because it was so terrible and melodramatic and none of the characters were likable, and it was just like the Dr. Sexy parody. God, I love that part so much. It makes me laugh so, so hard because it's so spot on. Ugh. I really despise Grey's Anatomy. lol.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I love It's a Terrible Life and all the good quotes in it. I even liked a Ghostfacers quote in this one! The whole episode was such a relief to see the brothers working together even if they didn't know they were brothers.

    It's a Terrible Life Quotes:

    15. Sam: "Hey, how the hell did you know that ghosts are scared of wrenches?" 14. Zach: "You'll do everything you're destined to do. All of it, but I know, I know. You're not strong enough. You're scared. You've got daddy issues. You can't do it right?" Dean: "Angel or not, I will stab you in your face."13. Ian: "Paul, time for a refuel buddy." Paul: "Sorry, no time." Ian: "Since when? Dude we get paid by the hour."12. Zach: "You should see my decoupage." Dean: "Gross. No thank you." 11. Sam: "I quit."10. Zach: "All I'm saying is it's how you look at it. Most folks live and die without moving anything more than the dirt it takes to bury them. You get to change things. Save people. Maybe the world. All the while you drive a classic car and fornicate with women. This isn't a curse. It's a gift. So for God's sake Dean, quit whining about it. Look around. There are plenty of fates worse than yours. So you with me. You want to go steam yourself another latte or are you ready to stand up and be who you really are?"9. Sam: "Yeah, I can use a beer." Dean: "Aw sorry man. I'm on the cleanse. I got rid of all the carbs in the house." 8. Dean: "Man I've got to tell you I've never had so much fun in all my life." Sam: "Me neither." Dean: "It's a hell of a workout too isn't it?" 7. Sam: "Yeah because I only moved here cause I just broke up with my fiancé Madison but I called her number and I got a damn animal hospital." 6. Ed: "First salt - it's like acid to ghosts." Harry: "Burny acid." Ed: "Not LSD." Harry: "No it's a bad trip for ghosts."5. Sam: "No, I...I just can't shake this feeling like I….like I don't belong here. You know what I mean. Like I should do something more than sit in a cubicle." Dean: "I think most people who work in a cubicle feel that same way."4. Zach: "You're a hunter. Not because your dad made you. Not because God called you back from hell, but because it is what you are and you love it. You'll find your way to it in the dark every single time and you're miserable without it. Dean, let's be real here. You're good at this. You'll be successful. You will stop it."3. Dean: "Oh great. That's all I need is another one of you guys."2. Dean: "Oh you've got to be kidding me. How would we get by? With stolen credit cards, huh? Eating diner food drenched in saturated fats. Sharing a cr** motel room every night." Sam: "That's all just details." Dean: "Details are everything. You don't want to go fighting ghosts without any health insurance." 1. Dean: "Alright look man uh, I don't know you okay but I’m going to do a public service and uh let you know that…that you overshare."

  32. I didn't even like ER so I knew a medical soap opera wasn't going to be for me. I once considered watching a season of it just so I could enjoy Changing Channels even more but that takes more devotion than I have. I won't even watch Blonde or the later seasons of Gilmore Girls. Instead I went online and found the in-jokes. "Seriously" didn't even occur to me as an in-joke the first time I saw it. I did however get the ghost comment right away.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Knight Rider brought me back to childhood. It was one of the shows my family watched together. I thought that parody was inspired, brilliant.

    ReplyDelete
  34. oh gosh, ER was good, though! Not even close to the melodrama of Grey's. And it was the only hospital drama I've even enjoyed (Anthony Edwards and Noah Wyle, FTW! :D).

lol, yeah, it's certainly not worth your time to go watch any of Grey's...you did it right, or better yet just go find some youtube clips. :) I won't watch Blonde either, and I never ever got into Gilmore Girls, so I was certainly not going to watch just for Jared.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I like both episodes in the first poll but I will go with Jus in Bello and the fact that i just watched it last night may have influenced my decision, as I really enjoyed it.

It was a well-paced episode with an intriguing resolution to the really action-packed demon invasion.
I love Henriksen and I was really sad to see him killed off.
He would have made a great Hunter and could have met up with the Winchesters now and then.
I liked poor Nancy too. It would have been nice for her to have gotten her "first time" with Dean as a certain sympathy had already sparked between them.

I was rather confused by Sam not defending Nancy, but not in a particularly critical way. I just wonder what the writers were trying to tell us with it.
Were they trying to tell us that Sam was already on his way to demon-hood or that after Cold Oak he wasn't the Sammy of before or something else again, for usually Sam is the one with doubts about harming anything.
Of course it must be remembered that the writers probably had another story-line in consideration for the ending of season three before the writers' strike, and there are many details in these episodes that are not picked up in season four.
I have to say I am not a great fan of the way the blond Ruby was portrayed. A little bit too over the top, I thought.
The dark haired Ruby was more subtle and boy did she get the job done.
I hated what she did to Sam and in consequence to Dean but one can't deny that she brought her mission to a successful conclusion.

CC was a sweet comedy and while i liked Gabriel's exposition, but as another poster said, the trickster's transformation to the Angel Gabriel was just a teeny bit forced in my opinion.
    X
I'm going to go with IKWYDLS, an interesting episode ,and anyway just about any episode would win against the meta episodes for me, although TMATEOTB is the one I like the most in the meta category as it contains some nice brotherly moments.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I voted Jus in Bello without blinking. The episode is pure genius and I'm genuinely surprised it's so much behind Changing Channels. The latter is a good, funny episode, but it's in a different league than Jus in Bello. I love Henricksen, his interactions with the boys and the way he finally had to believe them. The episode is fast and full of action, the demons are scary, the "battle" is awesome, there is the "I shot the sheriff" line, there is Nancy and finally, the little angel faced Lilith at the end of the episode, my favourite Lilith of them all. No contest here for me. I'm really disappointed an episode from my top 5 is losing like this to an episode not even in my top 15.

In the other poll, I voted for the loser to. I Know What You Did Last Summer is a great episode, I love the Anna storyline and it's the first episode with Alastair. TMatEotB is fun with Chuck and the meta, but I don't like the Lilith part of the episode and the boys arguing. Thus my vote for IKWYDLS.

I'm afraid too many of my favourites are leaving this competition too early...

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm shocked that both polls are blowouts. I expected them to be very close, especially the first one. Since I predicted both I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Monster at the End of This Book to be out by this point, I've given up knowing what will happen there.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeah, I loved the laundramat scene, how you can see Sam is getting more and more annoyed and Dean doesn't even notice until he reads it in Chuck's book.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I liked the "you just thought I was a dick", and Sam saying he's good. lol

    ReplyDelete
  40. AHHHHHHHHHHHH!! These are easy some of my favorite episodes of the entire show--and I know that because I actually know the episode titles without looking them up. I'm screwed. :(

    ReplyDelete
  41. Apologies from my side, for making the review thread into a mess.

    ReplyDelete
  42. After rewatching It's a Terrible Life, I forgot how likeable Zachariah was at first.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Changing Channels and I Know What You Did Last Summer.

    Quotes:

Dean: "Oh you've got to be kidding me. How would we get by? With
stolen credit cards, huh? Eating diner food drenched in saturated fats.
Sharing a crap motel room every night." Sam: "That's all just
details." Dean: "Details are everything. You don't want to go
fighting ghosts without any health insurance."

    Sam: "No, I...I just can't shake this feeling like I….like I don't
belong here. You know what I mean. Like I should do something more
than sit in a cubicle." Dean: "I think most people who work in a
    cubicle feel that same way."

  44. Have to add something about Sam, just finished watching some of Wolfpups SPN videos and she must like Sam's smile as much as I do. I just want to see more of Jared's beautiful smile, it has been a lost cause for several seasons now.
    http://www.wolfpupsden.us/

    ReplyDelete
  45. Changing Channels for me today. I decided not to vote in the other poll.

    ReplyDelete
  46. well Sam hasnt had much to smile about has he? But maybe we'll see some smiles this season, I love those dimples.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Sam in Jus in Bello-I always assumed it was the writers creating doubt about Sam not just with Dean with the audience too. We were supposed to be questioning Sam how far he'd go and what he would or wouldn't do at this stage and after the episode we saw a Sam who was desperate and would do questionable things to save his brother. We were well prepared for season 4.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ruby was trying and succeeding at creating doubt about Sam in Dean's eyes and the audiences. This was truly the first time I could actually see a future Sam so desperate he'd do things he knew were wrong and would normally be against. In the episode Sam was so desperate to wipe Lilith of the face of the earth so he could save Dean, he would sacrifice a virgin to do so. And yet people question his love for Dean?

Interestingly enough I can sort of compare this with Dean's willingness to sacrifice the few in Point Of No Return by saying yes to Michael, in order to achieve the greater good? People do questionable things when they're desperate.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I don't think Ruby was trying to create doubt about Sam in Dean's eyes. I think she was testing how far he would go in order to plan the next move in her manipulation scheme. This situation was a home run for her because she could see how far she had come. Normally Sam would have been right with Dean in protest, so Ruby had to know that her plan was working. It was also a foreshadowing of the season 4 choices Sam would make.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I read that scene differently. Dean knew he was irritating Sam. That's the kind of instinctual knowledge siblings have. He kept going just to annoy Sam in typical big brother fashion.

    ReplyDelete
  51. very fair points. I still don't like it, but Ruby was doing what she does best, manipulating poor Sam. I guess I was coming at it from the perspective of Sam choosing Ruby's way over Dean's way, and not considering the long-term effects of the choice and going for instant gratification of the possibility of getting to Lillith. Desperation, indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm not a medical drama person at the best of times so any hint of love triangles and soapiness among the gore of trauma kills all interest for me. I did however love the Gilmore Girls right up to the point Jesse was introduced. I watched awhile after that but quickly dropped it.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Agreed about Henrickson. He's in the top 3 of my characters killed off too early on Supernatural. I would have loved to see him helping every so often too. Heck, I liked the character so much I would have been all over a spin-off.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I'd post this over there instead of here. I don't want any part of that controversy.

    ReplyDelete
  55. lol, I agree with the love triangles and soapiness (even though I am strangely and hopelessly addicted to General Hospital), but I think that's why I loved ER! There was "romance", but it wasn't in your face and there were never (or at least until I stopped watching in season 8 or so) any love triangles. It kept surprisingly medical and gory! I just watched an episode of ER the other night since after catching up on Falling Skies I was nostalgic for some young Noah Wyle. He's such a cutie!! (digression)

    ReplyDelete
  56. I understand the idea of the writers wanting us to question Sam. I know I certainly did by this point. However, I don't see why Ruby would want to create doubt in Dean about Sam at this time. If the writers' point was to make Dean doubt Sam, I would say it had far more to do with what YED said to Dean before he died than anything Ruby. In fact since the whole season pointed to "Sam came back wrong" until the writers' strike put an end to that, my thinking is that originally Sam was supposed to have come back wrong and that would have led him on the path he took. This would add guilt to Dean about bringing Sam back in the first place as well as allow Sam to use these new powers to break Dean out of hell without angelic assistance. With this theory, season 4 would have been about what was wrong and how to fix Sam and could have still had the demon blood addiction piece.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Ha! I pretty much feel that way about most of the episodes that are left.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I loved his speech to Dean. He has a knack with motivational speaking when he's not being a pompous, petty, obnoxious, arrogant jerk.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Great quotes. These make me laugh every time. Man do I love It's a Terrible Life.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Neither brother has done near enough smiling/laughing in the last 4 seasons. I'm hoping part of this newfound maturity will be the skills of finding joy in small things and humor in hard times. If not for the brothers, at least for the audience.

    ReplyDelete
  61. If I had to pick a recurring hunter...(I don't count Bobby because he was more parental figure than hunter...in terms of the series bible) Rufus is number one and Hendrickson would have been number 2. I enjoy DJ Qualls work but his hunter is best in tiny doses. (at least until they flesh him out)

So, who are the other 2?

    ReplyDelete
  62. My picks for being killed to early is first Chris' Alastair, Jo and Rufus.

    ReplyDelete
  63. That is so true. Would have been cool if we were able to see more of the side of Zach

    ReplyDelete
  64. It would definitely have helped. I think Zach is the most hated angel of all.
