Generally I would vote a finale over a season 4 episode but Survival of the Fittest was kind of plodding to me and I really only got the finale buzz in the last 10 minutes. By contrast It's a Terrible Life was a breath of fresh air in the desolate plot that was the end of season 4. I loved the humor and finally, FINALLY we saw the brothers working together as a team. No secrets, no chasm. Too bad it wasn't the real world. In a stream of one despairing episode after another, this episode was my oasis and the episode that gets me through when I want to ditch the rest of the season.
ReplyDeleteMeet the New Boss gets my other vote. I'm not sold on the political and religious agenda they were pushing on us and that is by far the worst part for me. Still there was a lot to love. The plot moved very quickly and it jump started my excitement for season 7. A very good episode that could have been stellar if it weren't for the leftist agenda. Clap Your Hands if You Believe also had some good moments and it was very funny in parts. If it hadn't brought leprechauns, fairies, and brownies into the mix and then told us they were more powerful than angels and demons I would have liked it a whole lot better. That's a plot line I never need to see again.
I agree about your first choice. For the second, I am having trouble making up my mind. I always hate any kind of political "preaching" in an episode, but as much as I loved 7x01 and 7x02, they just set me up for the crash in 7x03. Also, I like 7x02 much better than 7x01. However, Clap Your Hands was one of my favorite episodes from Season 6. I don't think they were telling us that leprechauns were more powerful than angels and demons. I think the leprechaun was just lying. Remember, the gods thought they could fight Lucifer also... they were wrong.
ReplyDelete1. Survival of the Fittest - It had a slow start, but I loved the episode in full, and from the part where Dean asks Cas to bring him to the Impala, all the way to the Purgatory ending was really good. The ending was a shocker for sure.
ReplyDeleteIt's A Terrible Life is okay, not even close to any finale or any story-arc episode. My favorite parts were the beginning, the part after the ghost hunt, and the ending when Zach returns things to normal.
2. Meet the New Boss - Liked this better than CYHIFYB, that's for sure. Loved all the scenes at Bobby's house- Dean working on the car, etc. Loved Sam trying to reach out to Cas, and Castiel listening. Loved the scene where they're getting ready to get the souls out of Cas and when Dean and Bobby thought he was dead, then he woke up.
Clap Your Hands If You Believe had its funny moments like soulless Sam's "fourth kind" comment and saying Dean better run. lol But, in general, I didn't like it very much. It was too silly. Fairies? Really? This isn't Charmed. I loved that show but fairies don't fit on this show- that's how I feel anyways.
Hey, Dahne, can YOU guess which ones I voted for? Needless to say my winning streak is still intact, for now.
ReplyDeleteSurvival of the Fittest, lots going on, Crowley finding out Cas is nuts, the Alpha vamp, putting Bobby to rest...maybe.
ReplyDeleteMy second pick is Meet The New Boss, I have a hard time voting against Death and he was so funny in this one.
Clap Your Hands has one of my favorite quotes, Dean running thru cornfield tell Sam "Empathy, Sam, empathy. It just cracks be up every time. Loved Sam in this one so clueless about empathy. Lots of laughs.
I also think 7.02 was better than 7.01. I'll be voting for it next round. You do have a point about the leprechaun. I always say that if by the end of Supernatural's run we have never seen fairies again I will probably like CYHiYB much, much better.
ReplyDeleteI think I have a great guess. :-P If I knew how to do the prediction bracket thing like Adam used to do with the Best Show contest, I would have offered it here. Instead, you'll have to settle for my congrats on your winning streak.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed It's a Terrible Life so I voted for that in the first poll. Usually I love season finale's but Survival Of The Fittest was the worst I have ever seen as far as finale's go. In the second poll I voted for Meet The New Boss. This poll was a bit harder to choose. MTNB was good and seemed to set up a good arc but then it turned to nothing starting with 7.3. With CYHIYB it had it's funny moments but it was a stand alone episode and it always sat wrong with me having fairies introduced in Supernatural. It just didn't seem to fit in the supernatural universe. Going by just the episodes themselves and not thinking about what happened after I have to go with MTNB.
ReplyDeleteIt's a Terrible Life and Meet the New Boss.
ReplyDeleteWhich are the two season seven episodes that passed to round three?
Death's Door and Time After Time.
ReplyDeleteI can't see why Carver would ever go to the fairies when there are so many other more fitting creatures to deal with.
ReplyDeleteDidn't one of them tell Sam that they could retrieve his soul from the cage?
ReplyDeleteYes the head guy told him that, but I think at that time Sam was already thinking he did not want it back.
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of ambivalent about all these episodes.
ReplyDeleteIt's a Terrible Life because even though it irritates me to no end that we didn't get more aftershocks from Dean's teary hospital bed scene, it's a lot more fun to watch and a better episode, in general, than Survival of the Fittest. And I thought Surivival was pretty good, for season 7, but kind of weak for a finale (no Dean driving baby, no Sam/Dean scene outside the warehouse, etc).
I will vote for anything over Clap Your Hands. I hate that episode and think it's completely TERRIBLE. I don't find it funny, and the more I think about it the more I'm just insulted by it's very existence. I would watch BUGS on repeat forever before watching this one. It's so ridiculous and stupid and I can't believe it ever got made. Ugh. Sorry. I vote for Meet The New Boss. It was a pretty good premiere, and one of the better season 7 episodes we got. Plus, we got Dean fixing up the car. LOVE IT.
Oh man...I can't wait for Dean to see baby again in s8! I'm almost as excited about that as his reunion with Sam. lol.
I forgot Death was in the episode when I was typing earlier! Oh no. :o That is not like me. I love Death. Death's great in every episode he's in.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't believe they went to fairies to begin with so I'm not putting anything past the writing staff. After all fairies were a Ben Edlund creation and he is still very much a force in the writers' room.
ReplyDeleteYes which is what implied they were more powerful than demons and angels. The last thing I want is to watch the fairies become the big bad in the final season. I don't think my eyes can roll that hard. :-P
ReplyDeleteDeath vs Cas and Cas with Crowley are my two favorite scenes in the episode. Death can outmatch anyone, even mutated angels who think they are gods. Plus, pickle chips!
ReplyDeleteSurvival of the Fittest is probably my least favorite finale too although so far it does repeat better than Swan Song for me. It just didn't get to the action fast enough. I did love Crowley though, but then again I always do. I don't blame MtNB for the disaster that was The Girl Next Door so all in all I was pleased with it. It certainly made a great 1-2 punch in the opener. Still I liked Hello, Cruel World so much better once the premiere highs wore off.
ReplyDeleteHave to say I am shocked that you voted for IaTL. I felt sure that you would go the other way. I too am excited to see Baby back in season 8. And I mean in ALL of season 8. I'm hoping that Sam got her fixed up (although I hate the thought of someone besides Dean or Bobby touching her) and is driving her. She's been tarped for far too long.
ReplyDeleteNot so much snark in this one although I do like it better than the majority of the fandom.
ReplyDeleteCriss Angel is a Douche Bag Quotes:
12. Dean: "Is there something going on you're not telling me?" Sam: "No." Dean: "Sammy."11. Dean: "You see the thing about real magic is it's a whole lot like crack. People do some surprising things once they get a taste of it."10. Sam: "It's not all cr**." Dean: "What part of that was not a steaming pile of BS." Sam: "Oh I am game believe me. It's not the psychic thing I've got a problem with." Ruby: "Yeah I know what you've got a problem with but tough. It's the only way." Sam: "No." Ruby: "You know this would all be so much easier if you would just admit to yourself that you like it. That feeling that it gives you."9. Sam: "Okay, I'm in." Ruby: "What changed your mind?" Sam: "I don't want to be doing this when I'm an old man."8. Sam: "That's Chet Dexter." Dean: "I don't even want to know how you know that." Sam: "He's famous - kind of." Dean: "For what? Douche baggery."7. Vernon: "Oh come on Jay. His misdirect is shaking his a** like an 8th Avenue hooker."6. Dean: "Man, I hope I die before I get old. That old thing seems brutal doesn't it." Sam: "You think we will?" Dean: "What?" Sam: "Die before we grow old." Dean: "Haven't we both already?" Sam: "You know what I mean. Do you think we'll still be chasing demons when we're 60?" Dean: "No. I think we'll be dead for good."5. Dean: "It just bugs me. Actually it offends me. They're playing at demons and…and…and magic when the real thing will kill you bloody."4. Sam: "I just wish there was a way we could go through the source that's all. Cut the head off the snake." Dean: "Well the problem with the snake is that it has a thousand heads. Evil b**just keep piling out of the Volkswagon."3. Dean: "Yeah, it's time we had a little chat with Jay. Any luck tailing him?" Sam: "He slipped me." Dean: "He's a 60 year old." Sam: "He's a magician."2. Dean: "Not so fast. I ain't Gutenberg and this ain't Cocoon. Immortality, that's a neat trick." 1. Dean: "What kind of Kool-Aid are you drinking man? Sammy it ends bloody or sad. That's just the life."
You mean you don't dig someone in a tutu with a star-tipped wand whacking Sam on the back of the head?
ReplyDeleteCan't disagree with those.
ReplyDeleteUnless it's the haircut fairy who will give them a legit unlimited credit card if Sam cuts those locks, then yeah I'll pass.
ReplyDeleteSurvival of the Fittest was not one of my favorite season finales... while It's a terrible Life had me laughing, especially when Dean says the Ghostfaces were geniuses! I really liked that episode, thought it was funny and fresh. My vote goes for it.
ReplyDeleteMeet the New Boss gets my other vote, I didn't really like Clap Your Hands If You Believe or the mythology introduced about the fairies and leprechauns.... While I enjoyed Meet The New Boss, Castiel going all crazy, then being shown something was terrably wrong, the Levianthans taking over and making Castiel kill everyone in the office, then them clinging to him and taking over at th end? How could CYHIYB ever compete?
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!
ReplyDeleteActually, my hair is longer than his now. My neighbor's daughter (she's 12) lets her hair grow to 10" plus then cuts it and donates it to an organization that makes wigs for cancer patients. Since I've been infirmed I've let mine grow too. I'm planning on donating but not 'til it gets really long!
ReplyDeleteMy barber was a Gold Gloves champ in Chicago in the 50's. Last time I took the kids in he said he was going to knock me out. He's 5'6", I'm 6'4". He's a really nice guy though. Offered to come to my house for a cut after one of my surgeries.
Survival of the Fittest....had the dubious task of coming after Dragon Tattoo. Well it had a couple of dubious tasks. The second one was trying to get me excited about wrapping up the Leviathan story. If I nitpick and look at the separate bits and it all works on paper but by the end of the season I didn't care. It's a Terrible Life...was so much fun to watch and contained so many gems and a bit of healing for the boys.
ReplyDeleteAbout the only thing I can say about Meet the New Boss is that my jaw was hanging open and I spent the hour thinking WTF? Possibly because...didn't like The Man Who Would Be King (though the whole approach to that story element was a misstep) and they outright annoyed me, with regard to that story, with Dean's reaction to Castiel in the wake of TMWWBK. (Dean felt out of character to me.)
Clap Your Hands If You Believe had me at the microwave. One of the best things about that ep was the discovery that Souless Sam was hilarious.
So...
My picks are it's a Terrible Life and Clap Your Hands if You Believe.
I grow my hair out for about 3 years and then donate it to Locks of Love. Benefits someone else and I never have to worry about what hair style I'm going to wear. It goes headband, ponytail, bun, cut off, repeat. I'm never fashionable but it makes mornings a whole lot easier and man do I hate mornings.
ReplyDeleteThat is why I prefer Ben doing dramas. His comedies can be so...unfitting. I love his dramas though.
ReplyDeletehaha! Yeah, I'm feeling kind of disappointed in season 7 lately. I really need to rewatch it, but I'm still in season 4 for my summer rewatch (and it's been weeks since I've watched anything) so...It was my gut reaction. What I liked most about Survival of the Fittest was the last 10 or so minutes. And while It's a Terrible Life completely ignored what happened at the end of On The Head of A Pin (sadly), it's still fun to watch outside that caveat. I didn't mention in my other comment that this is when we meet Zachariah, and he's my favorite angel for sure! Love to hate him.
ReplyDeleteYes (ALL of season 8!). She was gone faaaaar too long in 7. I really feel like that was part of the problem! The Impala is kind of a third main character and her absence had the show off kilter. I think Sam will be driving her, and keeping her shiny and all that. I don't think he'd tarp her...he didn't after Dean went to hell so I think he'd keep her going this time, too. I can't wait! Ah!
Meet The New Boss on poll 2 for me...
ReplyDeleteYou are so right, Soulless Sam was to funny for words, loved it.
ReplyDeleteThis ep is in my ranking right down there with Ghostfacers eps, can't even find any quotes I care about. ;)
ReplyDeleteToday I'm voting for season 7.
ReplyDeleteAnd actually I cannot believe a season finale is losing to a mediocre and rather boring episode like It's a Terrible Life, which in my book is among the worst episodes of season 4.
I really liked Survival of the Fittest. The Crowley scenes are genius, there is Bobby, there is Kevin and there is a shocking cliffhanger. It might not be the best of season finales (but I still like it more than Swan Song), but as an episode it's still a hundred times better than It's a Terrible Life.
The other one is no brainer. Meet the New Boss is a fantastic episode and one of the best season premieres of SPN. We have the souljuice-crazy self-declared God Castiel trying to rule the world, we have Death, we have Crowley, we have the reveal about the Leviathans and Lucifer telling Sam he's still in the cage. Very strong, fast episode with lots of action, I love it. As far as season premieres go, only In My Time of Dying and Lazarus Rising could be able to compete with this one. Clap Your Hands if You Believe is probably the craziest episode the SPN team has ever come up with and it has its moments, but it's nowhere near Meet the New Boss.
Hopefully he will leave the ipod out this time. lol Will be good to see Baby back in black.
ReplyDeleteSwan Song is way better than Surival Of The Fittest to me. I would much rather watch Swan Song over SOTF any day. I watched SOTF only once and almost didn't even get through it all that time that's how much I disliked it. The only part that was remotely interesting was the ending when Dean and Cas were transported to purgatory. I almost fell asleep during the rest.
ReplyDeleteOn original watch I liked Swan Song better by far. However, SS is a lot of exposition and hardly any action so it loses a lot in the rewatch for me. Survival of the Fittest was too slow and plodding for me in the first watch and it still is in the rewatch but there is a lot more happening in it than SS. Plus it has awesome Crowley in it. My rewatch criteria is that I still laugh and still get excited about the action. Therefore they both fail that test but SotF ever so slightly less. In all honesty though when I'm picking an episode to watch just for fun, neither of these episodes are even on the long list of possibilities. I will watch them when I have to do a complete season rewatch but probably not much more than that.
ReplyDeleteThey were two of my favorites. Looks like Meet the New Boss will join them and possibly Hello, Cruel World depending on how many Tumblr people vote. They are traditionally less thrilled with H,CW.
ReplyDeleteI'm stuck in season 4 too. This has been my weekend to punish myself by watching Supernatural. Just finished Jump the Shark and it may be my new worst SPN episode ever winner. I forgot how completely atrocious it was and how I despised almost all the characters in it, not just Adam. Kate was okay and the waitress at the beginning didn't annoy me. I think she had 3 lines. I keep reminding myself that I only have 3 episodes left and I'm free of season 4 for at least a year.
ReplyDeleteI think Sam will be driving Baby too and I'm excited by that. She needs to be seen to be appreciated. I know I appreciate her, even more since missing her throughout season 7.
I thought it was decent but my opinion probably has more to do with the fact that it is in season 4 than anything. There wasn't near the brother strife in this episode so it gets bonus points for sheer relief. I also liked Jay.
ReplyDeleteIt's a Terrible Life was healing for me whether it was for the Winchesters or not. I sorely needed this episode of brothers working together. Glad to see RoboSam getting some love. He made me laugh a lot and CYHiYB was no exception.
ReplyDeleteI'm more shocked that Survival of the Fittest placed so high in the ranking polls. I think if the polls didn't happen right after the episode it would not have. I agree about Crowley and Kevin but the Bobby scene needed to happen in the episode before. It was stuffed in, ruined the pacing, and could have easily been more fulfilling in another episode where they had the time to devote to it. The whole episode was a paradox to me in that it was crammed full of too much stuff and at the same time seemed plodding and off-pace. They needed to introduce Kevin Tran much earlier in the season and the whole Word of God story line so it could have been built up more. I think that would have helped the finale also. This isn't my least favorite finale, which would be Lucifer Rising, but it is close. The last 10 minutes though rocked and I think they set it up well for season 8.
ReplyDeleteI sincerely hope Hello, Cruel World makes it. It remains my favourite episode of season 7. What is it going against?
ReplyDeleteHeaven and Hell
ReplyDeleteMade my top 40 ep list and there are
ReplyDeleteS1-3
S2-5
S3-4
S4-9
S5-6
S6-8(this was a surprise to me)
S7-6
But in the top 10 four came from S4, three from S5.
This is subject to change. lol
This is the second time you mentioned Crowley so I take it you are a big Crowley fan. I love Crowley too but even he couldn't save SOTF for me. If I was just going to pick a random episode to rewatch neither of those episodes would be on my list either. If I had to pick out of those two I would pick Swan Song though. The exposition never really bothered me in Swan Song and I thought Swan Song was really well done except for the ending. I would have rather not seen Sam watching Dean, Lisa, and Ben having supper. That's the only thing I really didn't like in that episode.
ReplyDeleteHeaven and Hell is a very good episode too. But yeah, lets discuss it when the time comes ;)
ReplyDeleteThat's in about 30 minutes. :-0
ReplyDeleteGood for you. You finished your list. I'm going to have to get started on finalizing mine with season 7 added once we get done with these dratted quotes.
ReplyDeleteYes, I adore Mark Sheppard. He is my current TV crush and I'm far too old for that. I also agree that having Sam outside the window at the end of the episode was a terrible decision. It negated the gravity of the whole season and lessened the emotional punch of the episode for me. They should have cut it.
ReplyDeleteThat was Jensen's idea I believe so you can blame him for that
ReplyDeleteWhy would Jensen have any say so over Kripke's final episode? That seems really odd.
ReplyDeletehaha! It's funny, the first few times I went through all the seasons (as I only watch the show in order, by season, and I've probably done that near 10 times now? Though I have watched my Top 5 out of order when I need a quick fix...but I digress) season four was my favorite. That's changed now, but I find myself strangely not interested now that I've reached halfway (and I still think season 4 is better than anything that came after!). I need to push through, though, as you said, but season 5 is pretty emotionally hellish, and then there's season 6 which is my Kryptonite...anyway - we'll see if I make it through to the end of season 7 before season 8 starts!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for the car. And for the hug. And for more Sam and Dean!
