Supernatural - Ultimate Episode Round 2G - Polls

2 Sept 2012

Round Two has become the battle of the nail biters. Once again we had a poll going down to the wire. The Monster at the End of This Book trounced The Girl With the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo to my great surprise. I was wrong both times in my predictions today since I Know What You Did Last Summer beat The Born-Again Identity by 5 votes. At least I will have something to vote for in the IKWYDLS vs TMatEotB poll in round 3.

Today's polls should be interesting since we have a season finale vs a season premiere and in the other group, two episodes that could not be more different from each other. Coincidentally we are also on Monster Movie for the quotes. Spread the word and happy voting!

  1. Easy voting day for me. I adore All Hell Breaks Loose - Part 2. It has phenomenal pacing, great character work, and the intensity every season finale should have. Basically there is something for everyone. The episode was heartfelt from Dean crying over Sam's dead body to Bobby confronting Dean about selling his soul to Sam's speech at the end. It had great action scenes where Sam takes down Jake, the devil's trap opens and Dean kills YED. That alone would get my vote. It was risky for Kripke to kill off the main villain so quickly and it showed me that they weren't afraid to take risks on SPN. I find All Hell Breaks Loose - Part 2 to be 40 minutes of solid storytelling. I was less impressed with Sympathy for the Devil. For one, Dean and Sam are zapped out of danger right at the start. I also never found Lucifer scary so the whining manipulation of Nick irritated me instead of excited me. Add to it the brothers being in a bad place in their relationship and it's no contest for me.

Monster Movie gets my vote and possible campaigning too. It barely squeaked into this round and I don't expect it to win against the powerhouse of Dark Side of the Moon, but I think it's a superior episode. Dark Side of the Moon is way too depressing for me and I hate when SPN pulls God into things anyway. The only scene I even like in DSotM is the fireworks one and it lasted less than 1.5 minutes. On the other hand, Monster Movie is another example of Supernatural taking a risk and for me they pulled it off really well. I love how they used iconic aspects of early horror movies to really sell the concept. I thought it was incredibly funny and I will never think of coupons again without thinking of the Dracula and the pizza man scene again. I still laugh so hard I cry when I rewatch that scene. I also thought Jamie was a great PiP, loved Dracula shifter, and was excited that the brothers seemed in sync in this one. Plus it had killer quotes.

  2. All Hell Breaks Loose part 2 and Dark Side of the Moon.

  3. All Hell Breaks Loose and Dark Side of the Moon. In the first poll, AHBL was just a much better episode. The other was OK but weak in some areas (namely every part that didn't have Lucifer in it). In the second poll, both were great episodes, but Monster Movie was for the most part a cute stand-alone, whereas DSOTM had a lot more depth.

  4. 1. All Hell Breaks Loose Part 2 - So emotional and so much happens. Dean makes a deal for Sam's life, Ellen and Bobby help him and Sam track down Jake, they get the Colt back and kill Azazel, and John escapes Hell. All very good.

I loved Sympathy For The Devil, but it couldn't compare, to my surprise, to AHBL Part 2.

    2. Dark Side Of The Moon - I loved seeing Ash and Pam again, and seeing Zach be told off by Joshua. It was also a sad episode and I like sad stuff.

Monster Movie, I hated it when I first watched it. Now after re-watching, it's okay, it has its moments. And I liked Jamie.

  5. All Hell Breaks Loose pt2 because, well, season 2 was near perfect from beginning to end, and this was its end. Such a wonderfully strong finale. So many emotions, and action, and huge setup for season 3. I adore it. Sympathy for the Devil is not bad, but no way does it beat AHBLpt2.

Second poll is Dark Side of the Moon. Something about this episode, even though its heavy emo-angst and Dean tosses the amulet at the end, just resonates with me! It's so powerful and I think it does a lot of good things with regards to the angels storyline in season 5. Plus, I love to hate Zachariah, and Joshua was wonderful. Also? I loved Castiel in the TV, and Dean calling him Carol Anne. The number of Poltergeist references in this show, overall, is awesome, but that one is my favorite! (for the record? I saw Poltergeist when I was a wee-lassy, maybe 10 or so, and it scared the crap out of me!). It's, IMO, one of the "good" Dabb and Loflin-penned episodes.

  6. All Hell Breaks Loose, Part 2
    Dark Side of the Moon

  7. Sam's "This is stupid" is one of my favorite Sam quotes of all SPN. The way he delivers that line. Really makes me laugh!
Monster Movie does have some really great moments!

  8. I voted for AHBL2. There's nothing really to add as it has all been said before. A perfect episode chock full of entertainment, pathos, action, sacrifice and victory.

Sympathy For The Devil was the start of another season of bad feeling between the brothers and not all that interesting in itself.

Although I like Dark Side of The Moon as it was intriguing to see the heavenly dimension and the various encounters with its inhabitants, angels and souls both, and to know that whatever tortures the writers put the brothers through, hopefully a "Winchesterland" is waiting for them both together in Heaven when their earthly struggles are over, I'm going to give my vote to Monster Movie as it's one of those rare episodes that give us and the brothers a moment of happiness in such a sad season.

  9. Quotes:-
    X
Dean: Come on, man, it's like the good old days! An
honest-to-goodness monster hunt! It's about time the Winchesters got
back to tackling a straightforward, black-and-white case.
    X

    Dean: I have been rehymenated.

Sam: Please. Dean, maybe angels can pull you out of Hell but no one can do that.

Dean: Brother, I have been rehymenated. And the Dude does not abide.

Monster Movie was a lovely care-free happy story, (except for the poor shapeshifter of course ) just what was needed after the depressing Metamorphosis; and the boys have never looked so yummy good. :)

  10. So easy today, All Hell and Dark Side of the Moon. I will just ditto Dahne on All Hell, but Dark Side is one of the eps that I have watched so many times and love each one of them. It has the awesome start which still shocks me, Colin Ford to enjoy, and I found out so much about Sam and Dean with their best childhood memories and just how differently they each saw family. I like Monster Movie, but since my favorite part was Dracula asking if there was garlic on the pizza and having a coupon and Dean being "rehymenated" it just does not beat Dark Side for me.

  11. Oh,easy choices!I'd forgotten what that's like..

All Hell Breaks Loose,Pt.2 - YED's death.I rest my case.
Dark Side of the Moon - Very sad but still great episode.I really liked how they presented Heaven.

Dean: "We've still got to see the new Raiders movie."
    Sam: "Saw it."

    Dean: "Without me."
    Sam: "You were in hell."
    Dean: "That's no
    excuse."

Dracula: "Ah you have brought a repast. Excellent. Continue to be of
such service and your life will be spared."
    Pizza Guy: "Uh huh,
    that will be $15.50."

  12. It was easy voting for me today. I voted for All Hell Breaks Loose Part 2 and Monster Movie. I'm surprised and sad to see that Monster Movie is losing now. :(

  13. Easy peasy today.

All Hell Breaks Loose 2, probably my favourite season finale of them all. This episode is pure perfection for its Dean/Sam and Dean/Bobby interactions, as well as for its entire storyline with Samuel Colt's railway devil's trap, opening the door to hell, killing off Yellow Eyes and sending John to rest in peace. Simply Supernatural at its best.

In the second poll, Monster Movie without a doubt. Dark Side of the Moon is too depressing for words and I hate the entire idea behind this episode. IMO they went one step too far showing heaven and making it look like some kind of depressing place makes it even worse. Add Cas, their last hope, losing hope and there you have an episode that should have never happened. Monster Movie might not be Supernatural's top league, but at least it doesn't make me wanna smash my PC out of despair.

  14. Good to agree with your choices after our little discussion on Cas's redemption ;)

  15. I loved the heaven SPN portrayed, everyone gets their little slice of heaven, sounds like HEAVEN to me. lol

    ReplyDelete
  16. My poor Monster Movie, you aren't getting the love you deserve. (Deep sigh.) I still love you.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I will never agree with you about Cas' redemption but I love the conversation. It would be boring if we all agreed on everything.

    ReplyDelete
  18. AHBL2 is one of the pinnacle episodes where so much happens you feel almost overwhelmed by the awesome when it's done. It blew me away the first time I saw it. It still blows me away after 100 times watching it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Poltergeist was one of my first horror movies too. It definitely made an impression. I also agree with season 2. My favorite season of them all.

    ReplyDelete
  20. What I love about the quotes hunt is that it reminds me of all the great little things in Supernatural. I tend to remember the grand moments but SPN really shines in the little ones. Some of the lines I love are nothing special in themselves but combined with the delivery, they become stellar. Sam's line here is one of them.

    ReplyDelete
  21. One of my absolute favorite moments in Monster Movie is when Sam is smiling at Dean buying the big pretzel. It's a huge carefree, "that's my brother" smile and I adore it. The brothers so rarely get to enjoy each other's company and just have some fun. This episode has both brothers happy and that make me happy.

  22. Monster Movie is one of the only non-depressing episodes of season 4. It's all downhill from I Know What You Did Last Summer on. Besides Lazarus Rising and Wishful Thinking, it is the only episode from season 4 that I have seen over 100 times. Generally I skip season 4 unless I have to watch it, like now with the quotes nominations.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Colin Ford was awesome in this episode, but then he is awesome in every episode he is in. He's the premiere child guest star on Supernatural and that's saying something since there have been a lot of good ones.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ha! I was also relieved to have an easy choice today. I think this part of the bracket has some weaker choices so I'm relishing it since things are only going to get harder as we go along.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I figured Monster Movie would lose, just not by this much. It makes me sad because for me it's a perfect standalone episode.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I agree about heaven. I think it was a huge mistake for the series to go there. I hate when Supernatural writers try to push their ideas of religion on us and this was one of those times. I doubt this would have been one of my favorite SPN episodes just because of the subject matter, but by also making it the MOST depressing episode in a season chock full of depression, it makes my worst of Supernatural list. You weren't the only only wanting to smash in a screen after watching it the first time. I try to avoid rewatching this one at all costs.

  27. You're spoiling me now! :)
Sam and his smile are absolutely beautiful here and it's all the more poignant because it's so rarely seen in the rest of season 4.
Only Dean's antics can make Sam smile with such carefree-ness. I'll end it here or I will get too sappy.
Thanks for this lovely reminder of happy Sammy. :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Maybe their depiction of heaven was a melding of ideas from several people. For me, someone who doesn't believe in religion at all, it was interesting. I looked at it as being part of a storyline. I thought the fireworks scene was really good and Joshua was excellent. The rest was ok but I had hoped they would expand the idea about not being to find John a little bit more.

I have to ask this question, please realize it's my inquisitive nature and nothing more. Do you think the writers' idea of Dean's time in hell was a mistake and that they were trying to push their religious ideas then?

    ReplyDelete
  29. You're spoiling me now! :)
Sam and his smile are absolutely beautiful here and it's even more poignant as it's so rarely seen in the rest of the season.
Only Dean's antics can put such a carefree smile on Sam's face.
I'll stop here before I get outlandishly sappy over those two brothers.:)

Thanks for this lovely reminder of happy Sammy.

  30. I've wondered if that little throwaway line is meant to echo possible audience opinion about the episode. lol. A slight little wave of meta from behind the curtain. who knows. :) but man, just thinking about it makes me laugh. His expression and his delivery? I want people to watch this show specifically because of HOW Jared and Jensen are Sam and Dean. Yeah, I like the plots (mostly) and the action and stuff, but those two guys and the way they play off each other with their expressions and line delivery is really what keeps me coming back for more and more and more. Of course I love the Winchester family story too but their performances are so much fun! Understated, emotional, dedicated.
    ...heh, digression. again.

  31. As I've said...All Hell Breaks Loose Pt. 2 will forever be hard pressed to ever get knocked off the top of my fav list.

My other choice was Monster Movie. I'm a little startled that it's not doing very well in this poll. Possibly because it's difficult to gate these things when looking at boards like this. People who have issues tend to be more vocal than people who like episodes so I had the impression that a more people hated Dark Side of the Moon. I didn't hate it but I have watched Monster Movie 3 times more than DSotM

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ha! I always took this line to be Jared's opinion of the demon blood addiction.

    ReplyDelete
  33. True. For what it's worth, I think I might have got carried away by the moment saying the redemption was complete. It's just... I forgave him, I'm not forcing anyone to do so too. This, and you know how much of a Dean girl I am. I will never think of him as a bad guy, even if I disagree with him sometimes. And I will always love him more than I do Cas.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm pretty sure Jared liked playing dark Sam. I know he liked playing Soulless Sam.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I like that idea too. However, it would suck if there was no Ash to help move me around, cause I'd like to visit real people. Famous, distant family, etc. If I could move around like Ash, I'd have a blast. :D

  37. I have to grab on to whatever happy moments I can in seasons 4 and 5. This one can get me all the way to Wishful Thinking without getting overly depressed again.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I want my slice to be at the Rainbow Bridge and all my animals, give me a DVD player and my SPN disk and it would keep me happy for a long time. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Very good question. I haven't really thought about it so I guess that means not as much but then again we never really saw anything of Dean's time in hell so I guess I wouldn't know for sure unless we had an episode placed there. Except for glimpses in flash backs and Crowley's hell line, I feel hell has been more abstract. Overall we have seen more of heaven and the anti-religious attitude of the PTB than we have of hell. Another factor may be that I have watched a lot of fantasy shows and demons in hell seems to be a regular part of them so I guess I am more used to that. Very few shows ever go to heaven. I do have problems with Dean's time in hell but not so much in the way you are asking.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Finally an easy one :)

All Hell Breaks Loose, whereas SFTD is a mediocre premiere.

And Dark Side Of The Moon. However depressing it might be, it has huge sentimental value for me as its the episode which made me fall in love with the show again after a horrendous season five.
I can't get anything remotely funny or interesting about Monster Movie.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Exactly, we haven't actually been to hell with either of the boys like we were taken with them to heaven. Sometimes one simply needs some mystery, some untold stories or undiscovered places. Heaven is one of them in my book.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I know the budget wouldn't have allowed it but I would have LOVED for someone to run INTO the Devil's Gate when it was open. For some odd reason I didn't feel the same about the Cage. Heaven does look pretty much the same from movie to movie to show. I did like the dark, war-like portrayal in the movie Legion. Brief but different.

It will always be a point of discussion as religion and, of course, politics are hot buttons for most people.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks. I will most likely never use Pinterest. I barely have time to keep up with Twitter but it's nice to have an option.
