Note: The following is an analysis of the 56-metered markets from Nielsen, which serves as a precursor to the fast affiliate and Live Plus Same Day rating results. The fast affiliates (which include total viewers and adults 18-49) will be posted at our forum on the website at approximately 12 p.m. ET.
CBS led this first Tuesday of the 2012-13 season with a first-place finish in the overnights in each of the six half-hours care of the season-premieres of NCIS (12.6 rating/20 share) and NCIS: Los Angeles (10.2/16) from 8-10 p.m., and the series-premiere of Vegas (9.3/16) at 10 p.m. Both NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles were close to year-ago opening levels on 9/20/11, while Vegas was equal to the series-debut of former time period occupant Unforgettable. That 9.3/16 for Unforgettable translated into 14.09 million viewers and a 2.9 rating/8 share among adults 18-49, based on the fast affiliate results.
CBS, as expected, is the network to beat on Tuesday this season, but The Voice has put NBC in the competitive adult 18-49 demo mix.
Next was ABC care of the expanded two-hour live Dancing With the Stars Results Show (8.9/14 from 8-10 p.m.), which peaked at 9:30 p.m. with a second-place 10.0/15, followed by the sixth season-premiere of Private Practice at a second-place 5.2/ 9 at 10 p.m. Comparably, the first hour of Dancing With the Stars ran neck-and-neck opposite NBC’s The Voice in the 8 p.m. hour (7.9/12 vs. 8.1/13), but The Voice will, no doubt, hold a significant advantage among adults 18-49. Private Practice, meanwhile, opened 25 percent below the season-premiere of year-ago occupant Body of Proof (6.9/12 on 9/20/11).
Over at NBC, aforementioned The Voice, which was just renewed for two more cycles, built from the first half of the season-premiere of former time period occupant The Biggest Loser (4.0/ 6 on 9/20/11) by a whopping 102 percent. Next on the Peacock net were recently introduced sitcoms Go On (#3: 5.0/ 8) and The New Normal (#3: 4.2/ 6) from 9-10 p.m. And the two, on average, beat New Girl (#4: 3.8/ 6) and the series-premiere of The Mindy Project (#4: 3.6/ 6) on Fox by an average of 24 percent. Comparably, and opposite NCIS: Los Angeles and Dancing With the Stars, still promising Go On dipped by 19 percent from one week earlier (vs. a 6.2/10 on 9/19/12) and The New Normal by nine percent (4.6/ 7). And Go On slipped by 42 percent from the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in The Voice. But retention for The New Normal out of Go On was improved at 84 percent and both should benefit once returning ABC comedies Happy Endings and The B____ in Apartment 23 step into the hour next month.
You can count on a full season episode pick-up for both Go On and The New Normal.
At 10 p.m., Parenthood on NBC finished third with a 3.6/ 6 in the overnights, which was five percent below one year earlier (3.8/ 6 on 9/20/11).
On Fox, which finished fourth in each of the four half hours, season two of sitcom New Girl opened with a 4.0/ 6 at 8 p.m., which was down by a hefty 46 percent compared to its year-ago season-premiere (7.4/11 on 9/20/11 at 9 p.m.). Next was the series-premiere of Ben and Kate at a depressed (and very distant) 2.9/ 4 at 8:30 p.m. Comparably, retention for Ben and Kate out of New Girl was only 72 percent and the two, on average, trailed the year-ago season-premiere of Glee (6.6/10 on 9/20/11) by a hefty 48 percent. Ben and Kate will not benefit, no doubt, once Raising Hope steps into the Tuesday 8 p.m. anchor position next week.
At 9 p.m., a second episode of New Girl scored an aforementioned 3.8/ 6 in the overnights in its regularly scheduled time period, followed by 87 percent retention for the debut of The Mindy Project at 9:30 p.m. (3.3/ 5). Comparably, The Mindy Project trailed the season-premiere of year-ago occupant Raising Hope (4.7/ 7 on 9/20/11) by 30 percent.
In the very distant No. 5 spot was The CW care of encore telecasts of Hart of Dixie (0.6/ 1) and singing competition The Next (0.4/ 1). Hart of Dixie will open its second season next Tuesday.

I'm a little worried about Go On's ratings, but thank God we can count on a full season pick-up. Hopefully, the ratings improve.
ReplyDeleteNCIS isn't a surprise, tbh.
And looks like Private Practice did okay? I still think it'll be the final season, though.
Happy For New Normal!!
ReplyDeleteAre we getting the top 25 markets early ratings as well today?
ReplyDeleteSeeing that Go On is doing better that the other comedy shows I am truly happy !
ReplyDeleteBTW- Go On is on NBC, not ABC.. (:
Yeah for Vegas good tv show.
ReplyDeleteOpps, Fixed :)
ReplyDeleteWell done CBS, but nothing I didn't expect. NCIS and NCIS: LA had BRILLIANT cliffhangers last season, and so many people tuning in to see how they get out of their predicaments.
ReplyDeleteIt still is on NBC though, so Go On has a fairly good chance of being renewed since its ratings are still higher than most, if not all, its other comedies. I hope the decline stops and this is where it levels out.
ReplyDeleteNice start for Vegas at least in total viewer numbers.
ReplyDeleteI think that makes it the most watched new series so far this year....
Now let's see how much it drops in the following weeks......
NCIS and NCIS: LA... Omg, My feelz.<3
