Ratings Breakdown:
It was an easy metered market (overnight) victory for NBC, which populated the evening with two-hours of The Voice and the series-premiere of drama Revolution, which was amply sampled. The second series launch of the evening, drama The Mob Wife on second-place Fox, fared considerably worse out of the season-premiere of Bones. Keep in mind that the year-ago evening was the official start of the new TV season, which had featured all original programming on ABC and CBS (resulting in the dramatic year-to-year losses for both nets).
The Voice took top-rated overnight honors of the evening with an 8.8 rating/14 share from 8-10 p.m., peaking in the 9 p.m. hour with a 9.2/14. Comparably, that outdelivered two-hours of the season-premiere of year-ago time period occupant The Sing-Off (3.5/ 5) by a whopping 151 percent. And it offered solid lead-in support to Revolution, which won the 10 p.m. hour with a 7.9/13. Comparably, Revolution was 103 percent above the series-premiere of short-lived The Playboy Club one year earlier (3.9 on 9/19/11). And the loss in rating at 10:30 p.m. (8.2/13 to 7.5/13) was only nine percent. This is a stellar start for Revolution.
On Fox, The Mob Doctor finished a distant second at 9 p.m. with a 3.7/ 6 in the overnights. And that, comparably, was seven percent below an installment of Hell’s Kitchen on the year-ago evening (4.1/ 6), with retention out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of Bones (5.6/ 8) of only 66 percent. Overall, Bones finished a respectable second in the 8 p.m. hour with a 5.5/ 8, which was 25 percent above Hell’s Kitchen one year earlier (4.4/ 6 on 9/19/11).
Elsewhere, annual ABC special CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock did not impress with a 3.8/ 6 in the overnights from 8-11 p.m., peaking in the 8 p.m. half-hour with a 4.2/ 7. CBS populated the evening with encore telecasts of How I Met Your Mother (two episodes: avg. 3.2/ 5 from 8-9 p.m.), 2 Broke Girls (two episodes: avg. 3.6/ 5 from 9-10 p.m.) and Hawaii Five-O (#3: 3.1/ 5). And The CW aired two episodes of low-rated Canadian drama The L.A. Complex, which averaged a 0.5/ 1 from 8-10 p.m. Next week, ABC and CBS are back with the season-premieres of Dancing With the Stars, Castle, How I Met Your Mother, 2 Broke Girls, Mike & Molly and Hawaii Five-O, and the series-premiere of sitcom Partners on CBS.

I'm happy about Revolution's ratings, but I liked the Mob Doctor, surprisingly. They never have been able to fill the void from 24. I think I'll stop watching before I'm completely sucked into the show. Too bad.

ReplyDeleteI personally didn't like Revolution's Pilot but I think it's great for the genre that at least people are interested. I fear it's going to drop a lot in the next coming weeks though. (didn't V, Flashforward, The Event, etc all have high scoring Pilots too?)

ReplyDeleteI don't know what's going to happend to Revolution next week. Remember that Castle's premier airs next monday and it's the most watched show on mondays. I believe that it's going to drop a bit(all shows do after the first week), and Castle has a very strong and loyal audience for five season(every season the average raitings go up).
ReplyDeleteI'll said that for now on, the order will be 1º Castle, 2º Revolution and 3º Hawaii Five-O.
Apparently the last half hour of Revolution declined to a 3.8 in the demo...

ReplyDeleteAbout half the people I know that watched it will not watch it again, the other half is telling their friends it's brilliant so tune in! XD
I wonder how much the positive word of mouth will fare against the negative word of mouth or the negative impressions of those that actually watched. Terra Nova had over 9.7 million viewers for its pilot and then dropped more than 10% for the next two weeks before leveling off around 7 million or just under.
Even assuming that Revolution drops significantly, I think being on NBC Revolution can survive mediocre numbers better than Terra Nova did being on FOX, but how far will it fall before it hits the plateau? Or will it surprise some like Person of Interest did last season and actually go up after a couple months?
Next week could be very telling......

ReplyDeleteYes, I am hoping for a POI trajectory instead of a TN, TE, FF, V trajectory ratings-wise. POI was the success story of last season (along with OUAT) for me and I hope that we get more like that in the future...

Terra Nova actually didn't do so bad generally (if it had been any other show) but it had the downside of being incredibly expensive and the numbers weren't good enough to make up for that.
ReplyDeleteWe'll indeed have to see next week because now there was barely any competition anyway. If it doesn't decline too much it does have a chance of surviving, especially on NBC.
They were ok. Nothing spectacular but should be good enough if they stay there to get a renewal.
ReplyDeleteYeah, there are som fanboys/fangirls that post things on this site without writing true things about their most loved series. They like too add things to the truth to make their favorites look good. All i remember from last season was Five-0 beating Castle in the ratings.
ReplyDeleteYep, terra nova was the lowest show in our cancellation prediction table last year to actually get cancelled ie it was the biggest surprise of last year in terms of getting cancelled.
ReplyDeleteTHe drop of near 20% was not too bad you're right. The problem was that it started relatively low for a series of that magnitude. Budget aside, FOX expected much larger numbers than the pilot gave them and it was doomed from that point on.
ReplyDeleteIt's not that they were particularly good, it's just that they are lucky to be on Fox, because everything else is falling apart at that network at the moment, so they will survive thanks to that ;)

ReplyDeleteI stand by my first impression that was FOX only aired the series in its entirety so it could recoup some of the money blown on Terra Nova by getting some ad revenue. I think FOX wanted it to succeed and gave it every chance to gain momentum in a positive direction, but it was doomed from the moment it aired to mediocre ratings.

ReplyDeleteI think the only lesson to be learned the last couple years is that network TV is more volatile than ever before and that networks can cancel series far too soon and let others linger far too long. I really wish they would look at their network on a macro level and strive to have a variety of programming for different audiences instead of just playing to the herd of sheeple.
In the 18-49 demo, yes, but not in total viewers. As far as total viewers are concerned, Castle beat Five-0 during the fall and spring season 90% of the time.

ReplyDeleteIt's a "country" thing... Here all that matters are the total viewers, not that "demo thing".
It's weird, cause for that odd system, shows like Community(My favourite show, not Castle, btw) struggles with getting renewed. I believe they don't count the online views, the DVR recordings, and all of that.
I didn't want to star a Castle-Five-0 war people, just wondering about how Revolution will mix with thoose very ratings-likely shows.
I think it needs to be said every year somewhere! XD
ReplyDeleteIt is one of the many reasons I prefer cable and premium cable. Their shows are their products and therefore they actually want to make higher quality programming. Might have something to do with why cable networks have dominated award shows for the past few years with no sign of slowing down.

ReplyDeleteI was reading elsewhere and saw Revolution with its 4.1 demo rating is the highest rated drama debut in 3 years since "V" (5.2) and the highest on NBC since Bionic Woman (5.7).... It is sad to think of how highly rated those shows were and how fast they dropped!

ReplyDeleteExactly. Next Monday will be the real test for Revolution because Hawaii Five-0 and Castle will be back. Last night was a good sampling night for NBC because there was no competition. Next week, however, oh man, we'll see who'll survive the crazy war.
ReplyDeleteIn order for it to surprise people like POI did last year (I know POI surprised many people but it didn't surprise me. I saw the potential very quickly) NBC is going to have to actually keep it on the air for a full freaking season. For the last few seasons, they've been very trigger happy. If the ratings decline too much over the next few weeks, who knows what NBC will do. It might be gone by December.
ReplyDeleteOh no. That was the point. I've noticed that NBC has made a point this fall to premiere their shows a few weeks early, for one huge reason: no competition. They want to start their shows a little early to get the easy and free ratings before the other networks start up their shows and create the ratings war. So far, it has worked for NBC. However, next Monday will be the start of the true test because Five-0 and Castle will be back.
ReplyDeleteThat is incorrect in one part: Five-0 has been the top rated show in that time slot for at least last season. Castle was usually #2.

ReplyDeletePOI was my pre-season pick to be the break out hit before I watched an episode. Something about the previews, the actors, and CBS's willingness to put the show in the best spot on its schedule just seemed like the perfect storm to me.
I definitely do not feel that for Revolution. After watching the pilot twice I see potential to last a a couple years or even be cancelled this year.
The pilot was just so uneven and both the writing and the acting were terrible at times. It's sad since potential is quite good for the series, but the execution was so much less than extraordinary . Some people can overlook bad acting, writing and action scenes because the narrative intrigues them or the potential is there..... I'm can't and I know I am not alone. I hope it gets better fast.
I hope they keep it on the air for the full original order and a back 9 episodes order even if it ends up struggling somewhat. It's really hard to judge a serialized show by an initial order of 13 episodes.... Well, it's hard to judge fairly I should say!
I think it will last the 13 episodes as long as it stays in 2's in the demo.

I am actually a fan of both Castle and Five-0, although I prefer Five-0, so I didnt want a war either ;)
ReplyDeleteYeah the demo ratings matters more with the networks than the total viewers. I don't really know why. As for the online views and DVR recordings, that's the hard part. Right now, the networks are struggling to adapt to the existence of
ReplyDeleteDVRs and the fact that lots of people use them now to watch stuff later. There are DVR+Same day, which is all DVR playback up to 3am that same night, then there is DVR+7, which is all the playback in the next 7 days. Neither of those ratings is given as much weight as the live ones though. As for online views, I don't know if the networks have a rating system for that or not. It also doesn't help that the Nielsen ratings system has become grossly outdated and inaccurate over the recent years. Problem is, it's still the only ratings system out there, so therefore the networks have to use it.
I honestly think at least part of it has to do with the fact that critics/industry people and viewers have different definitions of entertainment. Same as with the Oscars.
ReplyDeleteWe are still customers (at least people with Nielsen boxes are) even as our watching is being sold to advertisers. Because they don't get viewers as a product to sell unless we buy into the show as a commodity first.
I think it is safe for the front 13 too, I would hope it gets a back 9 too honestly. I forget was it sold as a 13-episode full run order? I think a few of the new series this Fall had short runs by design....
ReplyDeleteIt does not have a lot of VFX that require lead time and if the ratings stay above 2.0 like you said it would deserve a back 9 in my opinion.
really? I would think it would be a waste sending Touch to Monday. its pretty much dead as it is. But I guess they could air episodes up till January when The Following starts. Mob Doctor will no doubt be cancelled way before then.

ReplyDeleteMost awards show are not about entertainment though, they're about artistic achievement.
ReplyDeleteViewers vote for what entertains them every time they tune into a series.
Then it is a fundamental difference. I believe the goal of the "artistry" should be to entertain. But when a movie that made the least amount of money in a year gets beaten by one of the top grossing movies of all time, the viewers and voters are certainly at odds over judging and enjoying artistry, entertainment, quality, value...whatever you want to call it.

Great ratings for Revolution but I will be really surprised if it keeps it up, the pilot was subpar instead of being great like it needed to be I imagine ratings might go into free fall soon. Sorry to be a Debbie downer but it has happened a lot with these kind of shows.

ReplyDeleteI have been very entertained by terrible films or TV series. Bad acting or bad special effects in particular can make me laugh. However, I would never say that it was good acting because I was entertained when half the time I am laughing at just how bad it was. Likewise I have seen some well-done movies or series that I do not find entertaining in the least.
I'm a JJ hater and Kripke lover. It's funny because most of the bad reviews and fears about the show that I've seen out there all stem from Lost-mystery-TV-exhaustion. He certainly burned a lot of bridges. Which is why it surprises me that they promoted his producing credit so heavily. If Kripke hadn't been on this, I never would have given it a shot and I wouldn't be cutting it any breaks about not explaining enough.

ReplyDeleteBones is in trouble. The show managed only a 2.3 rating and three networks (ABC, CBS, CW) haven't even had their fall premieres yet. I'm afraid to see what Bones is going to pull in once all the networks are up and running for the new fall season.
I have to disagree that they are unrelated. I think one flows into the other. "Quality" film making that is "unenjoyable" or not "entertaining" has failed in it's primary mission, which negates its claim to "quality" IMO.

-Providing amusement or enjoyment.
Synonyms: amusing, diverting, funny ,recreational, comical... et al.
When an awards panel looks at nominating one of the last things they should be thinking is "was that that entertaining?"
Many roles are by design NOT entertaining, but that does not make the actors performances any less brilliant. Likewise, the best director may in fact be trying to create a somber or disgusting feel that is anything but entertaining. Sometimes roles or scripts are just too poignant or painful to be entertaining, in fact they may be disgusting or infuriating, but they can still be brilliant. I have finished watching movies and felt sick after. I felt that way because they were so well done, but I certainly would not call them entertaining. .
Being entertained is great, but I can be entertained by high or low quality series or films... and I can greatly appreciate shows or films I was not entertained by. I think we will just have to agree to disagree on this one.....
Also, one thing i think ABC did great with Castle is releasing Castle's books by a ghost writer. The books didn't come out here, so i got them in epub format, but i heard they did great and that's a really big money deal.
ReplyDeleteNetworks must do things like these to promote shows, it's a win-win(They gain money by promoting the show). The one problem with Castle is that it's unkown in Latinamerica, au contraire with Five-0. So they're loosing a great region.

That doesn't mean light-hearted, that doesn't mean comedy, that doesn't mean frivolous. Things can be sad, poignant, dramatic, heavy, serious, or/and touching, but if watching them brings you no pleasure be that with a thoughtful conversation, a good cry, or a good laugh, then they aren't good movies for me. What is the point of all that "art" without an audience? (for me)
I think your opinion is closer to the award show voter's opinion. :)

ReplyDeleteEvery year I tend to find little or no fault with the drama nominees. I don't always agree with the winners, but to me once you get to that level of quality any of the nominees deserve to win in most instances.
Sitcoms nominations I barely pay attention too. I watch few and tend not to care who is nominated.

ReplyDeleteNot if their other scripted shows are less expensive and their ratings are in the same ballpark. Bones is on season 8, making it a fairly expensive show and most networks can find a drama that will net them a 2.3 demo for a lot less cash than they spend on Bones.

ReplyDeleteActually, I read an article fairly recently (can't remember where exactly) that Bones isn't all that expensive despite its age, since Fox itself owns the show.
ReplyDeleteIn all honesty, I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to end it this season (eight seasons does seem to be the magic number for Fox shows, 24, House, etc). But I wouldn't be surprised either if it went on for one more season.
Put any show up against reality shows, it won't do as good.
