MOVIES : Gina Carano to topline female version of The Expendables
25 Sept 2012
MoviesJust a short while ago we announced the production of a female version of The Expendables. Now, we have word that up-and-coming action star Gina Carano (Haywire) is set to topline the untitled picture. Dutch Southern is writing this Adi Shankar production (Machine Gun Preacher, The Grey, Killing Them Softly). The former American Gladiators star certainly has the goods to be the face of the ladies’ version of the franchise, but it would be a missed opportunity not to include some of cinema’s classic action heroines.
Variety reports that Shankar is also in talks with several unnamed actresses prominent in the action genre, but is thrilled to have Carano on board, saying : "I don't know how I'm supposed to make a movie that is supposed to be the female version of The Expendables without Gina Carano in it. It would be like making Twix without caramel or Jamba Juice without jamba".
Carano is an excellent choice to build the franchise around, but the faces of the male version of The Expendables were the famous action stars we’d grown to know and love. Here’s hoping Shankar is able to round up some good old fashioned 80s, 90s and 00s action talent to go along with the new blood.
Carano can next be seen in The Fast and the Furious 6 and is also attached to star in John Stockwell's Taken-esque action-thriller In the Blood.

Who else do you think they should cast in that expendable film ? I'm thinking they should choose between Angelina Jolie, Sigourney Weaver, Linda Hamilton, Uma Thurman, Jamie Lee Curtis, Carrie-Anne Moss, Halle Berry, Kate Beckinsale, Milla Jovovich, Michelle Yeoh, Lucy Liu, Devon Aoki, Zhang Ziyi. And Nan Yu could reprise her role.
And let's not forget TV stars such as Michelle Rodriguez (Lost), Jennifer Garner (Alias), Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck), Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy), Elisha Dushku (Dollhouse) and Summer Glau (Firefly). If they do get SMG, Dushku and Glau, they should ask Charisma Carpenter (who had a small part in both Expendables movies) to make a cameo, just to say that they got reps of the whole Whedonverse in the same film.

not liking this female version...
ReplyDeleteThey should add Kate Beckinsale, Summer Glau, and buffy...but i dont think this movie will make good reviews
ReplyDeleteI hated Haywire. And she can't act...like even action movie act.
ReplyDeleteThe joy of the expendables is having all those guys in the same movie, it's like every action star that has ever been for the last three decades. There isn't the depth of female talent or iconic female action hero characters for this.
Just one name: Cynthia Rothrock
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! Gina is amazing.
ReplyDeleteSomeone is so getting fired over this movie. It will not recoup the money the spend on it. I hate to say this as woman but I'm not interested. But they would almost have to do a Charlie Angels thing to get people in the seats. And we so don't need another thing like that.
