Now that I have that out of the way, let's get to what this article is really about. If you're anything like me, you're anxiously awaiting Season 9 of the ABC hit Grey's Anatomy. And how can we not be? The way season 8 ended was absolutely frustrating! The doctors were left in the woods, with absolutely no hope of rescue in sight! Of course, we all know that they WILL get rescued. We've already been clued in to the fact that when we pick up this new season, we'll be ahead 2 or 3 months ahead and will see our favorite docs settled into their new careers. We've heard that this will be the "season of romance" including the possibility of Cristina and Owen finding their way back to each other. Am I a fan of this idea? Not particularly. I feel like Owen's character was really damaged this past year, at least in regards to his relationship with Cristina. Re-watching the season on DVD didn't do much to help my opinion of him either, in fact it only reinforced the fact that I believe they should no longer be together. Re-watching the DVD set though did make me realize that I'm going to miss Kim Raver. When she's actually given material to work with, she's quite good; it's a shame that the cast was so large and she never really got much to do.
That brings me to my next point. We know Raver is gone, as well as Chyler Leigh (R.I.P. Lexie Grey...man, her death was even sadder the second time around!) and now of course Eric Dane. I'll admit that as much as I'll miss Lexie and Mark (and now, even Teddy) I'm actually alright with them being gone. The show has just been way too full of people, so to get rid of a few actually isn't the worst move. However, one of the new things about Season 9 is that we're going to be getting an influx of recurring characters, and we're also going to be seeing two different hospitals, which will no doubt require two different casts. I'm not sure how I feel about this; I mean, we've spent the last 8 years at Seattle Grace and now we're getting a whole new hospital thrown into the mix? And do we really need more new people introduced to us? Perhaps it will play out differently on screen, but on paper it sounds quite overwhelming. New locations, new faces...perhaps Shonda should be calling this the "season of change" as opposed to the "season of romance"! (Though I'm pretty sure that was the basis of Season 4 so she probably doesn't want to repeat herself)
So now, I ask, aside from the few things we've been given: what can we expect? We know Meredith and the gang are attendings now (and how awesome was it to see that picture of Meredith in the attending scrubs?) and we know not everyone will be in Seattle, but what else? The finale left us with so many loose ends: what's Arizona's fate? I personally think she will lose her leg and have to deal with the struggles that come along with that, but that's just me. What's going to happen to Derek? He obviously can't operate any time soon, but he can still teach...right? Which doctors stayed in Seattle and which ones left? How is April coping with not being a board certified surgeon? How will Callie deal with being a (semi) single mother, raising Sofia without a father? I don't know about you, but I'm pretty excited to see how this season plays out! I think it's incredible that a show about to start it's ninth season can still generate so much excitement from it's audience, it's a true testament to Shonda Rhimes as well as her amazing cast and crew. Regardless of what happens, I expect a lot of changes to go down. I can just feel it, it's not going to be the same routine we've had for the last few years. But however it turns out, I know I'll be watching every Thursday anxiously awaiting to see what happens next.
What are you guys expecting from season 9? Do you think we'll be seeing a lot of change? Or a lot of the "same old same old"? What are your thoughts on this whole "season of romance" scenario that we've heard from Shonda? Do you want to see Owen/Cristina reunite? Leave comments here, and even feel free to chat with me on Twitter @carlroberson. I look forward to hearing from all of you!

Welcome to the site Carl and thanks for your first of hopefully many good articles :)
ReplyDeleteI was a little disappointed with Season 8, I really hope Grey's can get back to it's best this year.
ReplyDeleteI know for sure I'll be checking it out each week!
Thanks! I'm so glad to be here, thanks for the opportunity :)
ReplyDeleteSo this is what was meant by articles...
ReplyDeleteWhile Season 8 didn't measure up to the first few seasons (though, can anything?) I do think it was better than Season 7 which fell a little flat with me. I felt like it picked up the pace and it's hopefully setting the tone for an awesome season 9. Thanks for your comment and thanks for the welcome! :)
ReplyDeleteYep.
ReplyDeleteI won't be happy until I see Dr. Stark's rotting corpse drug out by a pack of Dingo.
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure :)
ReplyDeleteWell that's quite an interesting visual! :p I do have to say though that I'm glad Stark wasn't brought back for Season 8, he was absolutely unbearable. Thanks for commenting! :)
ReplyDeleteOh, and thanks for the compliment on my writing/article as well. I really appreciate it! :)
ReplyDeleteOk first at all congrats for starting to write for this amazing show!
ReplyDeleteWhen i heard the news about three main characters leaving the show i was kinda happy and sad ( RIP Lexie) because with a lower cast you can make great and deep storyLines for them.
Now that i think about it, if shonda knew from the beginning both Mark and Lexie were leaving she could 've Written them out by having them leaving the hospital together and ALIVE !
But if she felt this was the best desition , then i respect it.
I think this season has some potencial , and i'd really like to see a rating increase! And if they play their cards well, then it can totally happen :)
Among the many things i want from season 9, is getting to know where Izzie is, if she's ok and if she is cancer free. ( i realize now having her on my screen will never happen again, well at least not in this show anyway)
Welcome nice start with the article... Grey's is awesome point blank period lol
ReplyDeleteWelcome aboard! Grey's takes a lot out of me and just reading this made me realize i'm not sure i'm ready for it....that being said,i agree with you about Cristina and Owen. I think she should have divorced him, what a louse he is.Sorry, but i have no sympathy for him and at this point for Cristina too,we know they are getting back together and it pains me knowing that....So i guess that pretty much answered that question,lol...
ReplyDeleteI thought last season Arizona was going to die in the crash,if she doesn't yeah, that leg is a gonna! That infection already set in and i will be quite surprised if she doesn't get septic. Derek's hand,i know what kind of magic Callie can manage? No matter what its going to take time between surgery and rehab,Derek will probably teach while he healing.
I am not happy about all the new people being introduced this season,i was hoping the cast would remain the way it is,we'll just have to see the way it goes.Last season i was ready to call it quits, this year i'll play it by ear....
Hey Daniel, thanks for the comment and the congrats! That's what I was hoping for with the cast reductions, more time spent on the other characters and really getting some great stories for them. I fear though that with all of the recurring people we keep hearing about and the two locations, that it might not happen as we're hoping. But I still have my fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteAs for the Mark/Lexie scenario, I don't think Shonda necessarily knew that Eric was leaving. If she had known then she probably would have done things differently. Or well, at least I hope she would have. This season definitely has potential so we'll see how it all goes!
I would love to see Izzie again, even if it's just a 1 or 2 episode guest appearance (I really have faith that it could happen at some point) but even if we don't see her, I'd also love at least some kind of update on her.
Thanks again for commenting!
Thanks for the welcome! I agree, Grey's is awesome and I'm so ready for the new season!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the welcome! :) I agree, she should have divorced him this past season (or even he should have divorced her) they disagree on a very big fundamental issue and something like that really can't be worked through IMO.
ReplyDeleteI think it's going to be very interesting to see how both Derek and Arizona come back this year. Perhaps they will bond with each other over the fact that neither one of them can operate? I do think they'll both at least be teaching though.
I'm going to give the new people a chance, even though I'm not super thrilled about it. I try to keep an open mind, because it could always work out much differently once we view it as opposed to just read it.
Thanks for commenting! :)
Yeah, not wanting a baby while your husband does can put a damper on future plans! That in itself should have raised many red flags!
ReplyDeleteI want to ask,are you keeping Carl just for posting about Grey's,and keeping CTR05 for when posting in general? And also, will you be reviewing every episode?
I'll be using Carl when I post articles and CTR05 when I post comments, simply because I'm not sure how to change it to match up (and I'm not that worried about it either haha) The plan is definitely to offer something on every episode as well as offer thoughts and insight into future news and spoilers that we hear. I plan to cover other shows as well!
ReplyDeleteCool,till next time!
ReplyDeleteOh, and good first post! :)
Thanks so much! I look forward to discussing the show with you as the season goes on! :)
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! Do you have any plans on making reviews for every episode ?
ReplyDeleteI do have plans to do something for every episode, as well as offering insights on news/spoilers that we hear about in the future. :)
ReplyDeleteAgreed :)
ReplyDeleteHey...great article, you put in words, mostly, what I think about the show!! I have to agree with you that Cristina and Owen should realy have divorced in the previous season...the baby thing is a huge issue...and someone's got give....which I do not see happening in this case!!
ReplyDeleteI don't wanna see Arizona losing a leg as well, but I think it is what is going to happen...Derek's hand will heal...and he's gonna came back to surgery!!
I will miss Kim Raver too, she's a good actress!! And I will miss Mark and Lexie (R.I.P) too!!
I also think season 9 will be a great season....hoping here...because season 8 was awesome...except the season finale...like you said "(...) was absolutely frustrating!"
The two hospitals thing, hoping, it won't long too much!
And, like you, I'll be watching every Thursdays!!
Looking foward for your reviews!!
Sorry if there any mistakes here...english it's not my first language!
Your English is very good Cássia
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting! :) And your English is very good. I look forward to discussing the show with you as the season progresses!
ReplyDeleteAwesome review, so here's G'day from Australia and look forward to reading more of your articles, bring on thursday/friday depending on timezone :-)
ReplyDeleteI don't really understand why everyone wants Cristina and Owen to get a divorce. I mean, yes: the abortion and the cheating were really bad (I have a feeling that people tend to blame/hate/dislike Owen more easily and often than Cristina which is something that I don't understand at all. He lost his child and in a way he got cheated on to. Why a lot of fans hate Owen and can still love Alex, Mark, etc. is beyond me. After all Owen sill is the most decent male character on that show (next to Jackson of course)) C/O are a couple that's just meant to be. They love each other. They are soul-mates. They wouldn't really survive or be happy without each other. Has everyone forgotten the past seasons? O/C are not just season 8.
ReplyDeleteI must admit that I'm really fed up with the disasters that are going around in the show.
ReplyDeleteThe main characters were already in the car crash, plane crash, they were shot at, one drowned, another was hit by a bus, another almost died of cancer, another was pierced by an icicle. Seriously? I know there has to be a drama but I find personal tragedies far more moving that "almost dying" repeatedly.
And as someone said above, I am not sure if I am ready for season 9. I get used to the characters, love most of them and it is really sad that every happy event has to be followed by a crappy one.
