So the new season of Dexter is days away, and I've decided to note a few points of improvement, in hope that maybe somehow one of the production guys will read this and take them into consideration. Oh wait, they already filmed it. Well, in season 8 then.
1. Kill LaGuerta - For (oh) God's sake, PLEASE kill her already! She does nothing in the show than being a complete b*tch and having non-interesting side-plots. I don't know if it's the actress I don't like or the character, but either way she's incredibly annoying. You know what? You don't have to kill her (though I would prefer it), just get her out the show somehow! Write her a 2-minute scene where she's being transferred to Alaska or something. I know this show isn't really sticking with the books, but in this case I wish they had, 'cause she dies way early in them.
2. Give new characters an actual purpose - There was always some who found out Dex's secret, or was close to it. Doakes did and got blown to bits, Miguel did and didn't make it that long as well. Then we got Quinn, who started to investigate and then....backed down for some reason I can't remember. This season, it looked like detective Mike from Chicago will take the reins, but he didn't. He was just...There. Why was he introduced to the show? Just as the cop who helps them with the religious stuff? Come on...
Numero Dos - Ryan the intern. Sure, she's cute and everything, but what was her point? Just teasing Masuka? She just came, sold the hand online, and went poof. Which brings us to numero Tres - the other intern guy \ video game designer. He was just...weird. He had this creepy obsession with Dexter and felt crushed when he didn't approve of his video game (boo-hoo) but that's it! It went nowhere until the season's end, when we found out he was the one who bought the hand and sent it to Dexter. Why? We'll find out next season, I guess. But did they really have to introduce him really early just to have him do nothing all season long except being Jamie's boyfriend?
3. Better writing - It seems that in these last two seasons, the show's writing kinda lost its original spark. For example, the writing in season 4 was so great. Especially between Dexter and Arthur. The meal scene in "Hungry Man" was fantastic, and tell me you didn't feel literally terrified at the ending of the penultimate episode (and the finale, of course). unfortunately, it seems the writing kinda went downhill since. The best example is the Gellar "twist". It might have fooled some people, but I know I'm not the only one who realized it early in the season. I'm pretty sure they could have pulled it off, if it was written better. What a shame.
4. More blasts from the past - Although this season wasn't that great (thought it was better than season 5, IMO) it had its moments. Mos Def was a great addition, and Colin Hanks was a solid villain. But the best thing about this season was the episode "Nebraska". It had an "unleashed' Dexter driving around and being impulsive, all with the company of his Beloved Brother Brian. That plus the plot that brought back Jonah made "Nebraska" an awesome episode. I wouldn't mind seeing some more old characters this coming season.
5. Interesting side plots - Sorry, but I don't care about the problems in LaGuerta and Batista's marital life or the Captain blackmailing LaGuerta. Give us something good! For example, I really liked the Brother Sam side plot. It was well written, Mos Def was great and it made an impact on Dexter's character. Now all they have to do is write good side-plots like this for the other characters as well.
That's basically the main things I wanna see. There are other things, like more kill room time (remember when it was more than 2-3 minutes long?) but they're pretty minor. Anyway, after season 6's promising cliffhanger, I really hope we'll get a great season.
Hope you enjoyed reading. I would love to hear your thoughts, so hit the comments. What would you improve? And what would you take out?

Thanks for posting
ReplyDelete1) Yes. She annoys me.
2) Agree, would love to get some solid stories for Quinn, Batista and the others.
3) Agree somewhat. I agree about the Geller "twist"
4) Yes. I want to see Doakes again!
5) Yes, this has annoyed me the most with several "side plots" just petering out into nothing.
Having said that I LOVE Dexter and even a poor Dexter episode is better than most other shows.
Agreed. Michael C. Hall is a pleasure to watch, and even on a bad day he's better than a lot of actors out there.
ReplyDeleteGood post. :)
ReplyDelete1. Yeah, LaGuerta hasn't been interesting for a long time. I'm glad she had a smaller role in season 6. I'm not sure I want her to die just yet though, as it seems like she's going to get an interesting (possibly redeeming) storyline next season.
2. I agree. When a character gets introduced on this show, you just know they're going to die before the season ends. I'm glad they kept Louis and that his storyline continues in season 7. Hopefully it will be worth it!
3. Agreed. I didn't like the last few episodes of season 6 at all, and season 5 was not that interesting either. I also hope they won't just make storylines disappear like they never happened, like they did with ALL of the storylines from season 5. Whatever happened to the second Fuentes brother? Or that female agent that betrayed Debra? Or the fact that Quinn KNOWS that Dexter has killed a guy?
4. That would be fun, but I don't see how, as Lumen is the only alive MIA character left... I think. With no other show have I been so sad about the characters they killed off. Doakes, Lundy, Rita... I loved them all. But I'm not sure I want Dexter to have another dead guy to talk to.
5. Agreed. Dexter and Debra and whatever guest killer they have each season are the reasons to watch. LaGuerta, Quinn and Batista (maybe even Masuka) are just... there. Give them something cool to do!
1. Yes. let Deb do it in final episode!
ReplyDelete2. Quinn backed down because of his feelings for Deb, he realized that if he wanted to get close to her, then he was going to have to respect her wishes, which is seemingly short lived, so who knows what can happen now. I don't have problems with any of the antagonists, because they all reflect some aspect and evolution to Dexter's pysche/reality, as he searches for his own purpose and truth. From what we know about these villains though, I am getting a cross between Prado Bros. (political clout-drugs) and Jordan Chase (Intellectual business man- has others do work for them) vibe, so those may be concepts and aspects to Dexter we could be revisiting
3. Season 5 is the odd one out IMO, but it's one of my favorites, because the writers were fresh in not banking off of the past too much, and because it is the season of hope, despite the tragedy that just occurred at the end of season 4. Season 6 I feel is better than most give it credit for, because it homes in the most important aspects to Dexter's and Deb's own truths and makes the audience realize the series is about "perception" to reality, and what we "don't" is more than anything else and how scary that actually is, as everything that has happened thus far stares those characters in the face. IMO it makes a very strong bridge between the first 4 seasons and season 7. IMO season 7 has the capacity to be great, because of what season 6 did.
4. Agreed. That's why season 6 was great, because there were SO many tie backs specifically to Brian, which IMO is even why Trinity meant so much to Dexter and the audience...It's the "family" aspect that keeps the show really interesting.
5.I think the LaGeurta plot will be a good one this season. I thinks season 2 will also come back knocking...I am also VERY interested in Louis Greene and I hope he wasn't just a red herring throw away character.
Well if LaGuerta starts suspecting the bay harbour butcher is still out there and she gets anywhere near Dexter she may get killed off like some viewers want.
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one who felt like the Gellar 'twist' was intended to be a subtle double-bluff? As I was watching the season the idea of him being dead all along did pop up really early on and seemed obvious, so I was watching for it, then I picked up on a bunch of hints that he was actually still alive before they re-twisted and found him in the freezer. I rather enjoyed that story arc of "they've made the so-called twist so obvious that it won't end up going that way" leading to it being a surprise that they did go that way, like they made me out-think myself. I know a lot of people didn't watch it that way, I'm wondering if that's what they were going for.
ReplyDeleteKill LaGuerta is on my list every season, thankyouverymuch. :)
ReplyDelete#4. Last season we got wind that Dexter can [dangerously] change his dark passenger, as the death of Brother Sam pushed Harry aside for Brian...
ReplyDeleteI agree (:

I'm gonna have to get you to fully give me the play by play on this season because it will be a while before I can see it on DVD. I don't have showtime anymore and won't be getting it this year. My internet connection is too slow to watch online, so I need your help with the recapping. Think you're up to it?
ReplyDeleteOMG...i couldn't believe it...i dis-agreed with all ur 5 points....especially the one bout Lauren Velez, she's a puerto rican woman like me and i have Loved all her work in movies and tv all my life...and i Love her in Dexter...as to ur other points....whatever u said i said the opposite, lol.... Wow...do opposites attract?, lol...we watch tv in a different way, lol....☺....
ReplyDeleteSure. I will try to keep you updated!
ReplyDeletelet's hope so
ReplyDeleteDo you think the writing improved since the show started?
ReplyDeleteIf i watch a show is cause i Love the show and i have never found any flaws with Dexter....every season has been different and i have Loved every season since it started.....i never say it was worse then the last...i love every season for different reasons regardless how it was written....why?..simply cause i just LOVE the show...
ReplyDeletenow to answer ur question.....YES...SI.....Of Course.....just feeling sad that its ending next year.... :-(
There's only one thing that can match up to season 4, when we had a rockstar Lundy chase a scary trinity,
ReplyDeleteWe need the entire police department to find out about dexter and for him to go on the run.
Anything less will not get our hearts pumping.
if we were to rank baddies on their creepiness, and effect on dexter
Trinity
Brian
DDK
Skinner
Jordan Chase
Ah, got ya! :) I love the show too, but I did think that season 6 got kind of bad at the end. I'm not used to plot holes on this show, but last season had some, and the DDK storyline turned out a bit disappointing IMO. Still, I'm just as excited for the new season as I've been every year!
