The 2012 STV Favourite TV Series Competition - Day 29 - Quarter Final 1 - Game Of Thrones vs. Fringe

12 Aug 2012

Hey folks,

The final eight have been decided. The battle for the "Third STV Series Competition" is heating up. With yesterdays results we have Game of Thrones, Fringe, The Mentalist, NCIS, Supernatural, Once Upon A Time, Castle and LOST left. Only one can emerge a winner. Can any of the shows in question deny Supernatural the hat trick of wins? We're close to finding out.

We begin with potentially the hottest battle of the Quarter Final stage, with HBO's epic Game of Thrones taking on FOX's sci-fi twist of a show in Fringe. With Fringe drawing to a close this Winter it perhaps stands its best chance of victory this time around before the sands of time commit it to the TV history booklets. Of all the 32 finished shows that made the competition only LOST remains, so for Fringe you feel this could be its final hurrah. As for Game of Thrones, the show which goes from strength to strength, this is the second of what is sure to be many opportunities to succeed, but the fans of the sprawling drama would love to pick up victory after only its second season.

Firstly they both must meet, and it's going to be one hell of a battle...

If you want to see the draw for the rest of the competition, and see which show will take on which other show then head HERE for a look.

  1. I went for Game of Thrones, much stronger last season, and overall a more complex and impressive show to pull off!

    ReplyDelete
  2. Fringe - definitely. It had an okay fourth season but for the most part it has been great. I love the Walter and Peter relationship. For me, it is their humanity that holds the "out there" science and sometimes wacky plots together.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Game of Thrones.

Fringe jumped the shark a long time ago.

    ReplyDelete
  4. There is no other, not even Lost comes first,it will always be Fringe! It captured my heart and soul in season one and never let go!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Even the mess that was the last third of season four?

    ReplyDelete
  6. I love Fringe but I had to go with Game of Thrones!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Fringe, whilst I do love GOT I have more of an emotional attachment with Fringe which is what matters to me when it comes to shows.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Game of Thrones. I dropped the books, but since the show hasn't gotten there yet, I'm still all about it. The visuals are amazing and the scope incredible.

    ..FRINGE,FRINGE,FRINGE....YEEEEEEEAAAAA.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Fringe - one my favourite shows.

    ReplyDelete
  11. There can be only one.... Fringe

    ReplyDelete
  12. The second part of season three was a mess for me. Soul magnets :sigh:

    ReplyDelete
  13. Fringe. Never a question.

    ReplyDelete
  14. LOl,now i never said every episode was perfect,or every season was great, but i'll take the mess, warts and all. I fell in love with these characters,i have never felt so strongly about a show, not like this......

    Tho i love Tyrion ;)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Difficult choice to make, I love both shows very much (both in my Top 5). But the deciding factor was the fact that the upcoming season will be the last for Fringe.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Same here, I knew half way through season 1 that Fringe was going to be my Lost replacement. and it has far surpassed Lost in my humble opinion. looking for a new show now to replace Fringe when its over, So far Person of Interest and Homeland are up there

    ReplyDelete
  17. I am not watching GOT but I honestly can't imagine how that show could be doing to deserve to be called more complex than FRINGE.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Me too Dahne,i love watching Walter and Peter together, they have come so far in their relationship..Yes humanity, that's it in a nutshell!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Considering GOT S2 was all over the place and I am REALLY not a fan of tv-original filler plotline additions, voting for Fringe, which remained consistently awesome and crazy from start till now.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm hoping Revolution will do it for me,especially when i saw the person typing away in secret,POI is good but its still a procedural,a very good one at that, but i'm looking/hoping for a more serialized show. Homeland oh yeah, that is an incredible show that's for sure!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'll give Revolution a shot. Anything with Elizabeth Mitchell in it. I miss Juliet :(

    ReplyDelete
  22. Last year I would have voted Game of Thrones without a thought, but after the Season 2 Dany, Jon and Robb arc murders and all-around messy scripting.... this has become a much harder choice.

I still think Thrones has better production values and acting, but FRINGE is one of those series that is greater than the sum of its parts.

FRINGE gets my vote this year.

    ReplyDelete
  23. muahaha! F-orever R-eveling I N G-enius E-ntertainment!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. In all honesty Game of Thrones is indeed more complex than FRINGE. Well, the source material books are at least.

The series is streamlined a bit, but there are plots that go back generations on multiple continents all intertwined with prophecy, literally a cast of hundreds and thousands of years of complex history.

Fringe is complex in a different way of course, but I think sometimes people make it more complex than it is because it is so damn fun to theorize and trying to figure out what will happen next. XD

I think some of the theories born from the minds of the people on this forum were more complex than the actual series ever was!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I really hated the series created new plots also.

Unoriginal (and very divergent from the books) romance and created characters that have a distinctly modern feel to them made for a much less brilliant season than last year.

    ReplyDelete
  26. See it was worth the wait :) Ditto what you said about Fringe!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I knew you would be waiting for Fringe to posted today,lol..Yes it is worth the wait, always! :D

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh i know, and to remember Juliet is to remember her life ending, which is not how i like to remember her.Hopefully she will make it to the end this time!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Fringe was complex, but the last third of season 4 made everything that went before it completely redundant.

I'm still hoping that S5 can go some way to satisfying what I wanted as a fan, but personally I feel that S4 was a waste as it didn't answer what it set out to answer. I feel it was largely down to fear of not getting a S5, but it sacrificed a lot to give us 5/6 episode without Peter, then 10 episodes where they built up lots of mysteries and questions about the new world we were in, then they disregarded it all when it was just about to weave together.

The longer the summer has gone on, the more disillusioned I am with S4 as a whole.

Here's to keeping my fingers crossed that S5 goes some wear to repairing the hole in my Fringe Universe :P

    ReplyDelete
  30. FRINGE!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I was disappointed somewhat in both series last year, with FRINGE for the reasons you mentioned.

I don't think I feel quite as strongly about it as you do, but I was one of those very disappointed by the finale last year. I liked the first part of the season more than some, the build up was pretty good, the flash forward was AWESOME, but the finale was seriously bad for me.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Fringe has been the best show I have ever started watching by being to lazy to get up and go find the remote

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hey Gary! See that, there is something to be said for being lazy! :) Its me from GG!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I generally agree..I felt like there were all of these really neat ideas in those first few episodes that came from combined ideas from the first two seasons, but whether it was LOT's epic scope, or that the finale was left on too lite a note, or if it's just that the finale didn't add up to all of those interesting ideas presented at the beginning of the season, I just don't know, but maybe season 4 will make more sense, because those things relate to the future of the time line more than they did in the present of season 4.

    ReplyDelete
  35. There is nothing better than Fringe. It has been a long time since a tv show made me this excited to watch to tune in. I owe Fringe my soberity becasue of the Friday night time slot I stayed in to watch it instead of hitting the bars.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I fully understand what you saying! It is an exciting show, one never knows what direction they are going to take, you think you know and bam they go off in another! The only other show i felt that way about was Lost, but even Lost didn't do for me what Fringe does! You got the added benefit,it cut down the drinking, and that is a good thing!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Fringe! (although I love them both)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Really, people, who out there gives dislikes? This is all in good fun. Who's idea was it anyway to add those.

    ReplyDelete
  39. O my sweet summer child, I love Fringe, but, like all things, it must bow to the Khaleesi.

    "Halfman!! Halfman!! Halfman!!"

    ReplyDelete
  40. I love both shows so much, today's such a difficult decision. Have to go with Game of Thrones though...

    ReplyDelete
  41. My vote goes to Fringe. I have been a fan of the show since the start. Believe it or not I don't watch Game of Thrones so I didn't vote for that show.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Only one other show will get my vote at this point over Fringe (Lost)...Fringe gets the vote.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Blackwater, FTW...My vote goes to GOT

    ReplyDelete
  44. Very difficult between these 2, but had to go with Fringe

    ReplyDelete
  45. At no point in the entire run of Fringe has the show been complex. That doesn't mean it's completely devoid of complexity, they do throw in weird scientific theories quite often, which get resolved quickly with an explanation from Walter, who loves to use complicated language. In that sense, it is complex. However, when it comes to relationships, characterization, politics, conflict, etc... Fringe always comes short, compared to the rich world of Game of Thrones.

I am also disillusioned with S4, but that's not just it, because S3 was also a disappointment for me in many ways. I've never felt that Fringe was hugely epic or complex or the highest quality, but to me it was a little weird show with a lot of heart and some potential and I loved it. Then they decided that shock value and plot was more important than the characters they had developed for three years and they reset the show. S5 looks somewhat interesting and it might be entertaining, but I doubt it will win me back, because it's still a continuation of the reset.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Definitely true that some seasons may not be as fun or seemingly important, but become more meaningful when looked at after new information in later seasons comes to light.

Layered stories are often like that so I have hopes for FRINGE yet..... With the last few episodes needing to be a seasonal arc ending and a series ending I can forgive some lackluster elements and sloppiness. That is, assuming they do not go down that path again.

I'm hoping for a very tight season that ties things together, sheds new light on past elements and makes use of the new mythology from last season. If it does that I should be happy, but if it wraps it all up in happily ever after slop like Season 4 ended I will have an entirely different view of Fringe the series as a whole.

Happily ever after may not be the right phrase, but it all felt very contrived, sappy and hastily thrown together to me in the end and that was not something I associated with FRINGE prior to the last few episodes of the season.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Love Fringe so much, and of course my vote goes to Fringe, but I can't say it's better than Lost. The saga of Lost was much more bigger, smarter and more complicated. Fringe can't handle a 22 episode season to be excited all the way, when Lost did it perfectly. So if it will come in the end to Fringe vs. Lost, my vote goes, with no doubt, to Lost.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I love Homeland, especially after they came here to israel and filmed not that far from my house!

    ReplyDelete
  49. This one is breaking my heart, but since it is Fringes last season I went with it. Hopefully Game of Thrones can advance further in later years.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Had to pick Fringe. For me Game of Thrones had some issues managing the ton of story this season.

    ReplyDelete
  51. wow, it's a lot closer than it was when i went to bed. Fringe was like 70/30 up.

This could be a close one.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Without a shadow of a doubt, Fringe

    ReplyDelete
  53. Never watched Fringe, so I have to go with GoT. Brilliant show.

    ReplyDelete
  54. *O dear I love both shows but to me it will be FRINGE 4-ever! This show has a place in my heart next to The X-Files!!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Love Homeland, did you get to watch them filmed?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Yep,it certainly was bigger, smarter i'm not so sure about, before Fringe my thing was Lost,it still is,but with Fringe its different, lets say they are side by side but it will be Fringe in the end ,for me anyway!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Have you tried Grimm? To me it is Fringe's equal if not a bettershow

    ReplyDelete
  58. Not even a question. Fringe all the way!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I wasn't sure you were going to make it in time...glad you did! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  60. Lost is gonna wins this, but for now I vote for Fringe.

    ReplyDelete
  61. A brazilian Game of Thrones blog with 10,000+ followers has tweeted out the word and, it seems, been the defining factor as it has overhauled Fringe's lead. There is still time for the FOX show, but it is going to need some support and fast...

    ReplyDelete
  62. That should be considered cheating, although I know it's not since someone could do the same for Fringe as if there were a blog like that.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Not cheating at all. It's EXACTLY what we want to happen. We want as many people to be aware of the Polls and Competition as possible to make the results as accurate as possible. I know that several Fringe Sites and Twitter have also tweeted it out.

That's why we encourage everyone to help spread the word via twitter/facebook/google etc

    ReplyDelete
  64. I have been getting the word out, what have you been doing???????

    ReplyDelete
  65. Before , fringe was at 70% and now its losing. so unfear ... :(

    ReplyDelete
  66. Before fringe was at 70% and now its losing ... so unfear ... GO FRINGE !!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Why is it unfair? That was early when not many people had voted.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Why is it unfair? That was early when not many people had voted.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Don't care about either of them.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Hey, Fringe finale will air next year (as Kevin Reilly said).
    FRINGE: 2008 - 2013.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Being busy lately... however am glad my time-machine is working ;) !

    ReplyDelete
  72. come on #fringe fans!!!where are you!!!!??

    ReplyDelete
  73. Where did you hear that? It doesn't make any sense. Wouldn't Fox want to start a new midseason show first thing in January?

    ReplyDelete
  74. I would much prefer to see both these shows in the finale, so it was hard to choose, but I have to, and Game of Thrones got my vote. Both shows have a great cast, but GoT is so much bigger and very impressive.
If both shows were on sunday nights at 09.00 I would watch GoT first and let Fringe wait, so it is just a tiny bit better.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I agree.
Of the quarter finalists these are far and away the 2 best shows in my opinion and I will be happy with either moving on in the competition, but it would have been better if they were both in the final.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Fringe always and forever!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Love both shows, but GOT has been much more consistently engaging episode-to-episode, all killer, no filler. Fringe has done a lot of great episodes, but I gotta admit that S4 has left me a bit frustrated. GOT is young in comparison and may eventually blow it completely, but based on the 20 eps so far, it gets my vote.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Fringe will probably end its run in January,so hes right 2008-2013.Fox doesn't necessarily have to start a mi season replacement in January.Touch didn't start until March or April, nothing is written stone on when shows have to start..

Also, Septembers Notebook will be released on Jan 29,2013. They would not release the book until the show ends. With the holidays, and baseball there will be gaps,so even though there is 13 episodes with everything else they have to fit in the show will more than likely end in the 2 or 3rd week in January.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Come on Fringies!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  80. I'm confused about when this contest ends. The comments say 1 day ago which usually means the poll is closed but Disqus has been throwing so many fits lately I'm not sure the time stamp is correct. Is there time for #Fringe rally?

    ReplyDelete
  81. I think It will get until 3rd or last week in February, because last season the thirteen episode was aired on Feb 17th, and this season starts 5 days later in compare to last year.

    ReplyDelete
  82. do it anyway and FAST!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  83. The last few they had up ended around 2 pm.i could have told people they still had time to vote. They are having The Fringe Event this weekend so a lot of people are in Vancouver celebrating...I'm pretty sure it should have closed by now.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I didn't get this one up until around 11 last night GMT... so there's around... 2 hours left

    ReplyDelete
  85. Thanks! Didn't want to send people if there was nothing they could do.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Maybe, your guess is as good as mine. I think there was a mix up in Nov with baseball, didn't it rain so they had to reschedule which landed in Fringe's time slot? Something happened i think that was one of the reasons it got screwed up last season..So far the release date for the book has been postponed twice and the last release date i have is the 29th,i'l check and she if it changed again?

    ReplyDelete
  87. translate to US time please

    ReplyDelete
  88. As much as I love GoT, I can't believe it beat Breaking Bad. gotta go with Fringe on this one, though.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Love Fringe, but GOT is my favorite show right now. I miss Drogo.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Game of Thrones for me. Fringe just never did it for me.

    ReplyDelete
  91. oh nooooo, Fringe is falling behind :-(

    ReplyDelete
  92. Presuming it's 22:50 GMT, it will close in 1 hour and 47 minutes. That would be 5:50 pm CST or 6:50 EST.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Never watched Game of Thrones (and not convinced I'd like it if I did), but I adore Fringe, so that's where my vote's going.

    ReplyDelete
  94. No problem. If it is London time though, there is only 50 minutes to vote due to daylight savings time.

    ReplyDelete
  95. oh yeah, I forgot about that. I've done all I can. Thanks for your help. Keep it up :)

    ReplyDelete
  96. Come on Fringe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Game of Thrones is good but Fringe must get this!!

    ReplyDelete
  97. Agree. I also dislike the dislikes. I think it was a Disqus idea.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I was among the earliest to vote and forgot to comment. So... Fringe!

    ReplyDelete
  99. Good fight, Fringies.
All the best to the remaining shows.

    ReplyDelete
  100. With the new Disqus upgrade there is no option to not have downvoting. If you have like you automatically get dislike too. Andy talked to them about it but they haven't fixed the problem yet. If you go to the down arrow right above the first comment and click on it, there is a link to feedback. If enough people comment about wanting to have an option to disable the dislike button they will probably put it higher on the priority list.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Well that is a surprising result. Not the shocker that Doctor Who defeating The Vampire Diaries was but still an upset. Castle remains the favorite to win as it has from the start but it looks like it will be up against Game of Thrones instead. I don't see either The Mentalist or NCIS defeating it but honestly all bets are off now on the left side of the bracket. So sorry Fringe won't be in it.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Congrats to The game Of Thrones....so glad i like ya it would of killed me if Fringe lost to a show i didn't like!

And don't forget everyone, there is always next year!!!!!!!!! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  103. Same time,same place next year Cortexifan,hopefully with a better outcome! ;)

    We'll have to come prepared!

    ReplyDelete
  104. Ha,i was wondering why you didn't comment, that's not like you!

    ReplyDelete
  105. Well Gary we lost..this year, but there is always next year! Hope to see you here again, before next year that is,lol.. :)

    ReplyDelete
  106. Game of Thrones

    ReplyDelete
  107. I voted for Game of Thrones, but at the time is was losing 30/70, so I'm SHOCKED to come back and see that it's won. Wooot.

    ReplyDelete
  108. A lot of people were at the Fringe Event this weekend in Vancouver,i tweeted them, tweeted in general, hit Get Glue, didn't seem anyone was around. *Shrug*I think people were out and about doing there thing!

    ReplyDelete
  109. I am so bummed I didn't get to vote. :( I really wanted to back Fringe.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Yes. I just saw a scene where someone aimed a sniper from a roof. Couldn't recognize who was that.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Shit !! before fringe was winning at 70% !! come on !! :'((

    ReplyDelete
  112. Nice people who are fan of Game of Thrones give people who choose Fringe a "not like" for the comment! Typical!! Kind of childish behaviour I say!

    ReplyDelete
  113. Alll valid points. Lost had a grander scale and could just narrowly fit what was needed into a 20 ep. season. Often times Fringe struggles w/ this. Having said that Fringe is a daggone good Lost/X-files typ-a replacement. But Lost wins out..

    ReplyDelete
  114. How am I supposed to chose between GoT and Fringe? That's mean.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Good idea. I did that. A downvote hurts my feelings :(

    ReplyDelete
  116. I find this happening more and more and not just in this post. But yes they are being spiteful plain and simple. It is beyond me why they are behaving like spoiled brats throwing a tantrum? One person who didn't even say they voted just used the word Fringe and he got a few dislikes, makes no sense. But its getting out of hand to the point of pettiness.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Linda, try to ignore them,i am getting them left and right even when i am not saying anything to cause one.I can only believe they are doing it to be spiteful and petty. There are many new users here, and i don't know what site they came from but a change is definitely taking place. I can only hope that when school starts some of our seasoned users come back and some go period.
If this keeps up i am thinking of not posting anymore,it does hurt, and it is leaving a bad taste in my mouth, but i am willing to hold out or awhile and see what happens....

    ReplyDelete
  118. Uh-oh. I see you got one here. I gave you a like to balance it out. From what Dahne says, Andy is working on it, so things may change. I love your posts! Don't stop posting.

    ReplyDelete
  119. See this is what i'm talking about, they never tell you why they disagree or not like something.I'm sure there will be plenty more before the day is over..Yes Andy spoke to them that was awhile back so i assume its a very low priority for Disqus.

Thanks for the *like*and wow! I can't believe you love my posts, you just made my day! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  120. Sorry that was a mistake. I didn't mean to down arrow I was looking for the comment button to send to Disqus (obviously in the wrong place). I didn't think realize it clicked until I came back and saw the red. My BAD!

I don't like the down arrows either. I also miss being able to see who voted. That might be a fix too, so people have to stand with their votes.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Ha! That's okay! I can't find the arrow or line either,i even checked the top of the page and bottom. Yeah i miss seeing who *liked* you and definitely,in the past if someone disagreed at least they stated why, here they like to hide behind it...I'm pretty well disgusted with the whole thing to tell you the truth,as i said i'll give it a little more time and see how it plays out!

    I also miss my standings,last i knew i was 7 out of the top 10 here.... ;(

    ReplyDelete
  122. You must be watching terrible TV then... ;)

    ReplyDelete
  123. The worst season of Fringe is still better than most of what's on TV currently.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Darn it! Missed this poll. I would've totally supported Fringe. It was so close too! :(

    ReplyDelete
  125. Agree! I already complained "officially" because we all do have different opinions and when I don't agree with a comment I scroll futher to the next or simply give a reply but would never give a neg because it's all about personal opinions and you need to respect that, even when you don't agree with the OP...

  126. Yep, that's the best way to report this feedback to Disqus. I've already asked if this can be an option we can disable. If we get enough people post official feedback, hopefully they will listen :)

  127. I guess it's the Summer Vacation and people are bored but nevertherless they need to remove this dis-like button because when someone doesn't like you this person can start stalking you and give you evertime when you post even if it is {for example} just saying Whoop. We are all have our opinion and when someone disagree then then you can start an discussion {like adults} about it but it's kind-a lame just to hit the dislike thumb. It's all about respecting each others opinion and people don't need to agree all the time... ♥

  128. I found the down arrow Dahne was talking about. At the top of the comments section there is a space for you to comment and then underneath it is a line that reads Discussion, Community, My Disqus, if you follow that line all the way to the right is a gear icon with a down arrow that gives you a send feedback options. I miss standings on the posts too. You can find yours under the features tab, Badgeville Stats (just change the timeframe from week to all).

I am really sorry about the down vote earlier. I am glad you can change your mind and fix them though.

  132. In all fairness, people who simply said that they voted Game of Thrones also have been downvoted. There is "childish behavior" from both sides.

  133. Oh no where were you! ;)

  134. Oh i agree, but yesterday while almost all the votes and comments were for Fringe, there were very few GOT at the time.Someone or ones at that point went down the row and gave most everyone a down vote. There was one person who didn't even say he voted for Fringe just wrote the word down and he got a down vote.Did it happen on both sides, yes when people started getting fed up with what has been going on.This isn't the first incident, its been happening a lot over the last few months,i think it also goes along with the influx of new people..

  135. S1 made me weep with boredom. 1st half of S2, same deal. Then "Fringe" smartened up and became the show it is today.

  137. I was glad to hear a bit about POI's second season. I think more and more it's been finding a way to move a bit away from the procedural and make a pretty good serialization. The flash backs have been heavier and it's been nice seeing characters pop in and out of episodes! -But next season sounds like we will be looking a bit harder at the mythology of the machine!

  138. For me Lost will probably be a favorite for a long time, but I have to say that FRINGE is such a close second, especially because the shows are really juxtapositions to each other, as Fringe Division is like watching the DI figure out the Island, so we get a lot of physical answers for the things presented in Fringe, as being on the fringe is like being enlighten to truth to save ourselves, where as lost is about being in the dark and still being able to save ourselves, but I feel like they're both so special because they dance around very similar ideas, but come at it from different angles...

  139. Well i'm all for it that's for sure! There has to be quite a bit of info we will learn about concerning that machine!

  140. Been busy, so I don't come here as often. Oh well. Best wishes to the fans of the remaining shows!
