Supernatural - Ultimate Episode Round 2E - Polls

31 Aug 2012

Last round Swan Song made a strong showing for a possible overall win. It received 81.4% of the vote over The Man Who Knew Too Much. Yesterday also saw Abandon All Hope winning over The Song Remains the Same. These polls completes bracket A for round 2 and I was 7/8 on predicted winners. My only miss was Devil's Trap winning over On the Head of a Pin by one vote. Anyone else doing predictions?

Today's polls are super tough for me because ALL of episodes are in my top SPN episodes list. It's the opposite of tomorrow's polls, of which I only really like one. I curse the way the brackets fell sometimes. (Big sigh.) Today we are also searching for quotes from In the Beginning. Since Azazel is in it you know there's snark. Please nominate your 2 favorite quotes for this episode below and as always, happy voting!

  1. Today's round is very, very tough. Changing Channels is a brilliant comedy with a great surprise twist. It furthered the mytharc and did a phenomenal job of skewering Supernatural's time slot competition. It also had great continuity. It's a solid A episode. Simon Said introduced Andy, one of my favorite guest stars, and also furthered the mytharc. It was well paced and a great mystery. I have to think longer before I vote.

Croatoan was also a great mystery and an important episode for all the way through season 5. It contains some awesome brother scenes, major intensity, and 2 of my favorite lines of all - 1. "That's not school. That's Schoolhouse Rock." 2. "You have a neighbor named Mr. Rogers." "Not anymore." Man I wish Sarge had survived. Jus in Bello is also one of the best mytharc episodes and has snappy dialogue. I love Henderickson and this is the episode he's at his best. It also has smart brothers coming up with a great plan. I'm going to have to think on this one too.

For the record, I would vote for each of these episodes over any episode that will be in the poll tomorrow. By a long shot.

  2. Changing Channels and Jus in Bello.

  3. Changing Channels, the easy choice for me. I liked Simon Said well enough, but it's a fairly forgettable episode. I always have to pause and think about what it's about when I see the title. I did enjoy Andy, but nothing in Simon Said compares to the hilarious genius of Changing Channels. The Dr. Sexy and Knight Rider scenes being among my favorite moments in all of SPN. :)

Croatoan and Jus in Bello are pretty much equal in my mind as far as awesomeness. In fact, after consulting my episode ranking, they are side by side. I decided to vote Croatoan, just because of how far reaching every thing in that episode is. It's such a heavy mytharc ep, and pretty much nothing within it is explained for YEARS. That's dedication and serialized story-telling that I love! Jus in Bello is great for Henrickson and some awesome snark from the brothers, but right now, if I had to choose one to watch, I'd put in Croatoan.

  4. In the Beginning Quotes:

    15. Dean: "On November 2, 1983, don't get out of bed. No matter what you hear or what you see, promise me you won't get out of bed." Mary: "Okay."14. Cas: "You realize if you do alter the future, your father, you, Sam - you'll never become hunters and all those people you saved, they'll die." Dean: "I realize." Cas: "And you don't care?" Dean: "Oh I care. I care a lot, but these are my parents. I'm not going to let them die again. I can't. No not if I can stop it." 13. Mary: "I want to get out. This job, this life. I hate it. I want a family. I want to be safe. You know the worst thing I can think of. The very worst thing is for my children to be raised into this like I was. No, I won’t let it happen."12. YED: "Because they're strong, they're pure, and they eat their Wheaties. My own little master race. They're ideal breeders. Oh get your mind out of the gutter. No one's breeding with me."11. Dean: "The Lord is funny that way. Beth Whitshire, this is my associate. Our senior, senior priest Father Cheney." 10. YED: "Future boy huh? I only know one thing that's got the juice to swing something like that. You must have friends in high places. So I kill your mommy. That's why you came all this way. To see little old me." Dean: "Oh, I came here to kill you." 9. Dean: "For what? So they can lead your discount demon army. Is that your big plan?" Samuel: "Please. My endgame's a hell of a lot bigger than that kid." 8. YED: "Oooh, sticks and stones may break my bones…and they won't bring your family back either."7. Cas: "Your brother is heading down a dangerous road Dean. We're not sure where it leads. So stop it or we will."6. Dean: "I know what this thing is and I'm going to kill it. That's all the talking I need to do."5. Dean: "Thanks. Nice threads. You know Sony and Cher broke up right." John: "Sonny and Cher broke up?" 4. Dean: "Can you uh tell me where I can get reception on this thing?" John: "The USS Enterprise." 3. Dean: "This is a car of a lifetime. Trust me, this thing's still going to be bada** when it's 40."2. Dean: "You can cover whatever the hell you want. I'm still going to kill you." Azazel: "Right. Now that I'd like to see." Dean: "Maybe not today, but you look into my eyes you SOB because I'm the one who kills you."1. Dean: "Sammy wherever you are, mom is a babe. I'm going to hell. Again."

  5. There is great continuity in the Croatoan virus and Dr. Sexy. I love when Flo comes to visit and stays. Croatoan and Jus in Bello are very close in rank for me too. I'll probably end up voting for whichever is losing tomorrow morning.

  6. that's a fair method of voting when the episodes are pretty much tied for both being awesome.

When this show does continuity and callbacks right, it really does them right! There are some really great little bits and bobs sprinkled through the seasons, and I love that Dr. Sexy is one of them. :)

  7. I voted against Chaning Channels, because even though the comedy bits are great, I felt insulted with the Trickster-who-was in-fact-an-Angel-all-along twist. I loved the Trickster. He was a fun, hilarious and most of all unique monster in the SPN universe. And I HATE that they chose to put him in the Angel mold. And it was clearly not what was planned from the start. Really, really not buying it.

And Croatoan, don't really know why. Jus In Bello is equally epic but I had to choose. For that last scene maybe, and the excruciating hiatus that followed.

  9. All amazing choices today, was hard voting against these episodes.
Voted changing channels. Even though I love Simon said and Andy even more, it can't even come close to the awesomeness that was changing channels. Just a brilliant, hilarious episode with the trickster (Gabriel).
Next voted jus in belo. I love croatoan as well but jus in belo is IMO one of the all time best episodes. Just intensely brilliant the whole way through

  10. I watch this show only for brotherly love, so my obvious choice would be:

Simon Said - Loved the way Dean fears if Sam is turning into a monster. Changing channels - I didn't enjoy much because except the ending because, during the time I was watching that episode, I don't know any other American TV show other than Supernatural and that one included references to 2-3 shows, which I didn't really understand.
Crotoan - Too bad that this episode is losing. This one had great brotherly moments. On the other hand, I liked the action in Jus in Bello, but that episode IMO, is missing something, which I couldn't express.

  11. I voted the same. i love Simon Said and don't care much about Changing Channels nor about the trickster, And then Croatoan is one of my top favorite episodes. Jus in Bello has some good stuff but I strongly dislike the final moments.

  12. 1. Changing Channels - Probably my all time favorite comedy episode on the show. I just can't get over the CSI and Kinght Rider spoof. lol Loved Gabriel in this too.

Simon Said was a good solid episode, but doesn't compare.

    2. Jus In Bello - Henriksen being on the brothers side was great to see and there was a ton of action. Too bad Henriksen died just when I was starting to like him.

Croatoan was great too, so it was a tough one. I'd say they're also tie. To the point, I'm doubting my vote! lol

  13. There were part of both the first eps that I like, but trickster/Angel wins the day for me even though there were major parts of Changing Channels I did NOT like will go with it.
Crotoan for all the good brother scenes.

  14. On the first one I voted Changing Channels. A lot of hilarious moments, and the CSI Miami bit just kills me. Simon Said was a really good episode, and I liked the special children storyline of season 2, but CC was funnier.

I loved both of the eps in the second poll, but Croatoan is more memorable to me for some reason, so that's what i voted for.

  16. Hey I am 74 and enjoying each day my eyes open. I just ask God to let me make it to the end of SPN. LOL

  17. Although Changing Channels had some good moments such as Sam becoming Kitt and the Japanese game show, Simon Said beats it for me and so gets my vote; the episode was suspenseful and interesting and then we got to meet Andy who still remains one of my favourite guest stars.
    X
Croatoan and Jus In Bello is a hard one as I consider them to be on the same high level but I vote for Croatoan as I loved the way that Dean wouldn't leave his brother and wanted to remain and die with him. That's the Dean I admire and respect.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Even I felt the same. I hated the way, the show portrayed Angels as a family on earth with issues. Lucifer, Michael, God issues were fine but storyline was fine, but including every angel in that made the entire story arc diffused and less compelling.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Changing Channels was very easy to choose. Comedy gold in connection with a big reveal, twist and drama.

The other poll is a torture. So cruel to make me vote against Croatoan (because obviously I voted for Jus in Bello, which is in SPN's top-top elite), such a brilliant episode and one of my season 2 favourites. But well, there aren't many episodes able to compete against Jus in Bello for me.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I remember the hiatus after Croatoan and how frustrated I was. John's secret was one of the few times when I thought Kripke dragged out the mystery far too long.

    ReplyDelete
  21. It's really hard when you have to vote against favorites so early in the contest. At least no one can think I rigged the brackets. I'm as frustrated as you guys with some of these polls. I would vote for each of these episodes over the majority of episodes still in the contest.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I never thought of Changing Channels from an international perspective. I can see how it could lose some of its appeal if you weren't familiar with the shows they were spoofing. Don't worry about the grammar. You do spectacularly well for someone for whom English is not a native language.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I really wish we had seen Henrickson the hunter. His character had so much potential. It was a waste for them to kill him off so soon.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The scene where Dean chooses to stay with Sam in Croatoan is one of the reasons why season 2 edges out season 3 as my favorite season.

    ReplyDelete
  25. If it weren't winning by so much, Changing Channels would have gotten my vote too. I love when Supernatural blends genres like this. Like Mystery Spot, the comedy is topnotch followed by excellent myth-forwarding drama. Not many shows can do both comedy and drama that successfully, much less in the same episode.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thank you.

Coming to the international perspective and cultural references, I face this situation a lot of times like:
    1. I am never really attached to the Impala because, hardly 10% people own cars in our country. Our family is not in that upward 10%. So I don't know what it is like to get attached to a car you own. Hence I don't enjoy Dean's only romance! May be I would have enjoyed if it were a horse with two cowboys.
    2. There are lots of references to many English movies and rock music, where my knowledge is almost zero. Believe it or not, I have so far watched less than 20 English movies. And almost same is the case with rock music, I didn't know of the song "Stairway to Heaven" until it was mentioned in an episode of Season 7. So, I don't understand when a character talks with references to movies. Dean does this a lot of times and If feel he has done that even more in season 7.(I still don't understand, why singing "Air Supply" song beside your brother in a car is awkward.) I prefer the way Demons talk, especially Crowley, with pure English idioms without reference to movies or songs.
    3. Episode titles. I take time to google every episode title of Supernatural, so as to know if that is the name of a movie or a song. There are even few instances, where I actually downloaded movies/songs after which episodes were named and they are some of my favorites now. What is and What should Never Be is an example.

  27. Yes, it was such a noble moment and Dean executed it perfectly by saying that he had taken this decision because he was tired of the hunting life while it was clear to everyone, including Sam, that it was simply 'cause he didn't want to live without his brother; something that he takes to the dire consequence in AHBL.

  28. Quotes for ITB
    X
Dean: "You can cover whatever the hell you want. I'm still going
to kill you." Azazel: "Right. Now that I'd like to see." Dean:
"Maybe not today, but you look into my eyes you SOB because I'm the one
    who kills you."
    X
Dean: "This is a car of a lifetime. Trust me, this thing's still going to be bada** when it's 40."

Strangely enough, although I really enjoy this episode, I'm not greatly inspired by any of the quotes. Perhaps it's because my favourite ones are those which Dean and Sam exchange between themselves, be they funny, snarky or serious.
